and cannot return safely. >> so many people fleeing their countries, desperate without a home, politicians and institutes today are arguing over one urgent question. should the united states let more refugees into the country? >> as our grand prize winners they win the 5ds,000 prize. this year we asked middle and high school students to produce documentaries telling us what is the most urgent issue for the new president and congress to address in 2017. student as competed for the chance to win one of 150 prizes totaling $100,000 in prize money. we received almost 3,000 entries from 46 states. plus the district of columbia. land, germany, singapore, and taiwan. and now we're happy to announce our first place winners. in the middle school category, the first prize winners are andth graders molly, camden ava from pennsylvania. for their documentary, u.s. gun violence.

a complicated puzzle. the first place winner for the high school east category is 11th grader matthew from gonzaga college high school in washington, d.c., for his documentary titled invisible. which deals with homelessness. matthew also won this year's fan favorite contest. he'll receive an additional $500. in the high school central category, our winner is 12th grader jarod clark from royal oak high school in royal oak, michigan. for his piece, enough is enough, dealing with pharmaceutical pricing. and our student cam first prize winner for the high school west category is ninth grader from laramie high school in wyoming. for herpes, fossil fuels to renewables. the challenges of transitioning. congratulations to our winners. thank you to all the students and their teachers for competing. and making this year's student cam competition a sg success. the top 21 winning entries will air on c-span in april. and you can watch
