2016. in the est gun laws country because of the act of 2016. what does it mean for those who have guns or want to buy guns in maryland? let's find out. >> it's a problem that i think we have in maryland and a lot of other states is allstate laws are not consistent. the only way we're able to do it, we have a democrat in the state house, governor o'malley, he pushed very hard. but there were over 1,300 people that signed up to testify that one day. so we met with the n.r.a. and we met with the rifle association and we met with several of the gun groups but we also met with daniel webster. the most important piece of the bill in my mind is the handgun license requirement that we

have in maryland. >> the gun laws in maryland are -- have closed what people call loopholes in a lot of states. it's difficult to transfer guns in maryland without the state looking at it which is very important. a number of states have places where you can transfer guns between individuals without any checks and maryland does a pretty good job of restricting at and making sure that commonsense measures are put into place to keep them out of the hands of people who shouldn't have them. >> oh, now we found out what the 2013 firearm safety act is and what it does. but not all states have gun control like ours. we asked experts again if similar strict laws should be nationwide. these are their responses. >> unfortunately, until there is some movement at the

national level, some of the states would have less gun laws. i don't think we will have much movement. >> the need to keep guns out of the hands of people who shouldn't have them, whether it be due to mental illness or ties to criminal activity. military-style rifle is a name. it doesn't really address how the gun performs. and so i think the ban on military assault-style weapons that was es the point attempted, i think. >> we need to get rid of the military-style assault weapons, get rid of the high-capacity magazines. >> guns divide our nation and one of the biggest issues in the 2016 presidential campaign and still is now. the national rifle association,

or the n.r.a., endorsed mr. donald trump for president of the united states. the experts we interviewed has some very different opinions on gun control. >> i think n.r.a. has been an extremely successful lobbying group as far as changing the public discourse when it comes to gun rights and gun ownership. they have basically been very good at selling people on fear. >> guns are inanimate objects so they are neither good nor bad. just like other inanimate object in the hands of somebody that's good, they will be used correctly. and somebody who's bad, as we've seen very recently in the news, you can be devastating and create terror with all kinds of inanimate objects, not just weapons. you can use trucks. you can use planes. you can use pressure cookers.

so, you know, people are clever and if they're bad and clever, they don't need guns to do negative things. based on what we've seen, we'd like to pose the question to president trump and the congress. >> what will you do about gun control and gun violence in america? we need to stop terrorism and mass shootings. >> and yet abide by the second amendment. >> we are confident that your collective experts will -- >> more gun control, to be or not to be -- >> that is the question. thanks for watching. >> to watch all of the prize-winning documentries in this year's student cam competition, visit tudentcam.org.
