this evening, the hill center hosted a discussion on the relationship between the 13th amendment of the constitution and the incarceration of african-american men. see that live on c-span. senate today, the confirmed the nomination of neil gorsuch to be the next associate justice on the supreme court. the vote was 54-45. three democrats joined all republicans president. neil gorsuch is the 113th justice to sit on the high court. here are some brief remarks from his new colleagues. we begin with chief justice john roberts. youf justice john roberts:

quickly get to do the court as the court as opposed to these members. it becomes hard to think of. people look at their families -- this is a family. you do get new arrivals. it is a tremendous sense of loss. just a wonderful colleague. him in ours deliberations and we will miss him around the court. that is part of the process of the evolution of the court. we will welcome the new members with open arms. be richer and the course of history because of the gradual turn over. you do get used to seeing the same people every day. you have lunch with the same people every day. it will be an interesting part of the changeover.

always used to say that when the court gets a new member, it changes everything, it changes everybody. simple changes, we move the seats around. the same in the conference room. more fundamentally, it can cause .ou to take a fresh look the new member will have a particular view on how issues should be addressed. it may be very different than what we have been following for some time. it is an exciting part of the length of the court. justice o'connor could remember vividly the details of her first oral argument. visibly telling us stories of what it was like in the room. what are the impressions you will take away from yours? downe moment that i sat

and was able to look out and see all of the people in the , that is the moment i will most intensely remember. lawyers i had known for years setting at the table in front of us, ready to argue. then, watching the intensity of everyone's face. i had forgotten how much people believe and know that they are affected by the court's decisions. you see the anticipation and i can't actually say that it is pleasurable. you note in people's faces, their concerns. beside -- thew side that some parties were in. is toet how important it people sometimes. when you are in your office reading the braves, you

understand the voices that they are giving you. when you see their faces, it just reinforces that importance in a way that nothing else can. what is the other a motion? absolute fear. likeon't know what it is to sit with eight other colleagues. to sit on the supreme court and listen to the questions of your colleagues is somewhat humbling. just like justice o'connor, i will always remember that day. >> you had to have the awareness that everyone in that room was waiting for your first question. >> yes. that i interesting is had gone in prepared with any number of questions.
