[chatter] ♪ >> all month we are featuring our student cam winners in the sea skin -- c-span student documentary competition. students told us the most urgent issue for the new president and congress. our second prize high school winter is a 12th grader from oklahoma. her documentary on animal farming, antibiotic resistance, "b food labeling is titled ehind the bite." >> this is a chicken sandwich, which you can get from here. it supposedly comes from a place like this. and is ultimately cheaper than anything you could get there. i don't think i could tell you

what i'm eating or where it came from. what does a label like cage free, grass fed, or organic mean in the store? eating is a vital element to human survival. it fuels our bodies every day. how can we not pay attention to what we are putting into our mouths? what are we eating, or better yet, what lies are we being sent? -- are we being fed? we need to start off with where the chicken on our sandwich came from. a concentrated animal feeding operation. >> you can put two animals in a small pen. animals confined for a purpose. >> i learned that a small cafo for beefs holds 7000. a large is well over 200,000. now i can't help but wonder, with so many animals in such

confined unsanitary how are they staying healthy? answer these antibiotics. >> a scenario where we raise livestock without antibiotics would result in illness and death of those animals. >> what is a practice that goes on widely is to put antibiotics in the feet of animals to help enhance -- feed of the animals to help enhance their growth. it has little to do with them being sick from an infection. >> are they used to prevent illness, or are they a growth stimulant? i decided to travel near and far to gather a variety of opinions. more superbugs evolve and bacteria that is resistant to all non-antibiotics. >> the doctor refers to as

superbugs are antibiotic or drug-resistant bacteria. that the bacteria inside of us are no longer affected by antibiotics and other drugs, making medical advancements useless and ineffective. >> bacteria are one of the most serious public health issues. we face they cause tens of thousands of deaths. millions of illnesses. the numbers are sure to climb unless we take concrete coordinated action. >> is a big problem. there is the opinion that it's mostly the overuse of antibiotics given from doctors that are the true source of resistance he. studies from the world health organization showed 75% of the antibiotics in the united states are used for agricultural production, and a majority of -- resistance around humans the cdc estimates 2 million

people are becoming infected with antibiotic resistant bacteria every year. of those, 23000 die. with tragic numbers like that, you would think congress or the president would take action. >> the white house unveiled its action plan for combating antibiotic resistant bacteria, which sets forth ambitious goals. >> national action plan turned out to be very inactive. for companiesose in the agricultural industry. nothing has really changed. i have been a vegetarian for five years. i am safe. this only applies to the meat, right? >> it's not from eating the meat that you have the problem. it is that the bacteria in the environment in general becomes resistant to those antibiotics. b the environment the soil -- eing soil, plants, runoff water,

and other factors. to avoid support for antibiotics use, should we be eating cage free grass fed organic products, or are we missing something in the fine print? take the label cage free. my hands are cage free. but i can also be cage free in a house with 30,000 hens. it simply means they are not in a one foot by one foot cage. is on the grass with its mother until the last 90-60 days of his life. that is where 90% of the beef in the u.s. is put into a feed lot, and quickly found for the last lastickly fattned for the three months of his life. >> comparing these gardens, it

was obvious that they were upping the price. we are buying poor quality products and paying more for them, and anya langley -- and unknowingly continuing our support for these practices. what is the solution? one, congress needs to adjust the consignment and health regulations among cafos, banning agricultural -- those, far as labeling we are the ones buying into this. >> you need to compare food labels. educate yourself on what you need to be eating. the fda needs to crack down on its standards and enable more fair and realistic practices on its products. after taking this journey we
