elizabeth rosenthal will discuss her recent piece in the new york magazine discussing key drivers of health care costs. be sure to watch c-span's "washington journal." join the discussion. >> congress has passed a one-week extension of federal funding through next friday, may 5. it includes benefits for miners and continues existing funding levels. we sat down with a reporter on capitol hill to find out what we can expect next week. host: we're joined by nancy ognanovich, who is an appropriations reporter for bloomberg. what is the status of the talks on the longer-term 2017 spending measure? ms. nancy ognanovich: those talks have been going on for weeks if not months and we are looking at an intense weekend session. maybe possibly spilling into next week to nail down the final details of the omnibus appropriations bill. house and senate republican

leaders want to bring it to chambers next week. they are talking about 11 unfinished bills in that package. the bills for fiscal year 2017 that started last october 1. plus, possibly a supplemental spending bill to cover defense and border security provisions that have been requested by the president. and you never know, there could be some other things tucked in there as well. we will not know until we see the package. as of the close of business today, there was talk that it could be filed as early as sunday night, maybe monday night. we have seen these things slip before. we will be looking to see it early next week. host: the posting on the "beyond the hill" blog, after this measure passes, the government shutdown avoided. as donald trump prepares to sign

the stopgap. what sort of stumbling blocks might be ahead for this longer-term measure? ms. nancy ognanovich: it depends on the disposition over the weekend of so-called poison pill riders, that we see every year in these appropriation bills. a lot of them target priorities that democrats favor, for example, we are hearing there could be riders to start dismantling the dodd-frank reform act. always, a perennial issues -- issue these days with the riders that go after planned parenthood, women's reproductive rights. we are looking to see the outcome of a discussion of extending and making permanent retirement benefits protections for miners. that is something that senate majority leader mitch mcconnell is very much in favor of as well as democrats. those are some issues. and also, defense spending and how an increase for defense spending could possibly be met

with similar increases on the domestic side of the ledger. those are things that democrats are demanding. host: how will any work on the longer-term cr impact republican efforts to bring up their health care replacement bill? ms. nancy ognanovich: late last night, there was a decision to hold off on that because if they had tried to force a vote on the affordable care act, repeal and replace, today or tomorrow, democrats said they would block that continuing resolution to fund the government. in the end, the republicans did not bring that out. later on, after the vote on the cr, kevin mccarthy said there were not any plans to bring up this affordable care act bill next week. host: nancy ognanovich covers spending issues.
