tv Washington Journal Viewer Calls CSPAN June 30, 2017 9:39am-10:03am EDT
9:39 am
paper to henry pittock. he turned it into a success. invested in a lot of real estate as the town grew and was able to eventually build a house as grand as this one. >> watch creep's cities tour of portland, oregon, on c-span2's book tv" and sunday on "american history tv." working with cable affiliates and working with cities across the country. >> "washington journal" continues. host: and we are back in open phones this morning. you can call in tell us what you think about the debates happening in washington and around the country. public policy or politics. let's get to it. jennifer, viking -- is it minnesota, independent caller? what's the name of your town? caller: vining. host: i don't know why i read viking. maybe the minnesota vikings. caller: that's ok. definitely associate with that. i was trying to get on with the
9:40 am
last person that you had, the last guest. but anyways, i just want to say that i watch c-span mostly. that's all i watch 24 hours a day. c-span 1. host: oops, jennifer, are you there? you broke up a little bit. you watch c-span a lot. caller: i do because i used to watch msnbc until they started bashing trump and it was really obvious they were just bashing him and all in for hillary during the campaign. then i went to cnn, and then all of a sudden within the past -- since trump has gotten in, all you hear is russia, russia, russia. every time i hear that i turn the channel. i am so sick of that. i guess i would have more credibility -- the media would have more credibility at least with me if i would have heard them going after, let's say hillary when she was secretary and giving 20% of uranium of
9:41 am
the united states uranium to the russians. i think the democrats have a lot more involvement with the russians than trump ever did. yet, the media never tried to expos that. -- expose that. and it's so obvious they are just in the pockets of the liberals. i mean, everywhere you, "new york times," "daily beast," all that stuff, i look at their websites. just its just bashing trump. i am just so sick of it. he's our president. they need to get over it and they need to just try to work for the people of the country. i'm just really disgusted by it host: ok. caller: i turn it off soon as i hear it thank you. host: jennifer in vining, minnesota. perry in fort lauderdale, florida. caller: that's a perfect example of the hypocrisy on the right. all these people on the right say cnn, fake news. everybody's fake news. the real fake news is fox. you can go on youtube and you can -- there is a category, fox
9:42 am
news lies 2016. the ews lies 2000 -- clinton story has been debunked. trump got so much time on cnn during his campaign. what's he doing for the people? he's making a profit for his family and himself and his rich families. he's not doing anything for the people. give me a break. host: ok. here are some headlines from newspapers around the country. "the clarion ledger" in louisiana, the headline "protesters, no cuts to medicaid, dozens march against the health care proposal before the senate." and then you have this from "the san francisco chronicle," "return of the travel ban sows anxiety anew. many cannot meet the guidelines set by the white house in response to the supreme court deciding to take up the case." and then "the dallas morning
9:43 am
news," "g.o.p. may retain obama tax hike. this is one of the tax increases tra were included in the affordable care act. " "the dallas morning news" say they may include a 3.8% increase on high earners in the proposal they are redrafting as we speak. and then there's also this from "orlando sent national" in florida. "trump tweets denounce." vulgar comments about female tv host. topics for all of you to talk about here this morning. michael in monroe, new york, a republican. hi, michael. good morning to you. caller: yes, hi. good morning. i'd like to comment about your last speaker. if there is even -- it doesn't mean they're wrong every story. i'd like to -- i was taught
9:44 am
when i was young that [inaudible] so eve you anymore -- that's "the new york times." we don't believe them anymore. host: and michael, which outlets do you read or watch? caller: well, i am taking out the middle line. nobody's right. nobody has it -- everybody tries to tilt it the other way. so i'm trying to stick to the middle point of all the stories. host: all right, michael. tad in rhode island, independent caller. hi, tad, what's on your mind this morning. caller: good morning, greta. i'd like to thank you and your staff for taking my call. we talking about how polarized we are. right after the election, i spoke to a friend in texas and he said to me, if hillary had
9:45 am
won the election, there would have been a civil war. and this morning early on, one of the callers said -- mentioned, i think they called on the republican line mentioned the civil war. and what i had thought over the st few years is that we have -- we have a polarized country and i thought we had a liberal country. then, my -- i modified my idea and i said, maybe we have three countries here. liberal conservative and -- liberal, conservative and a theocracy. then i got a hold of this book, i'm still reading it from the library called "american nations" by colin woodard. he explains there are 11 nations here and our division goes back to the religious wars in europe centuries ago. and those characteristics were brought over to this country
9:46 am
and those divisions still exist. and i think i would rather see us split off into our own little countries here rather than going through another civil war. and i have no ax to grind on either side and god bless everybody that's listening to "washington journal." thank you very much, greta. host: all right, tad. "kansas city star." chris wants every u.s. voter personal information for trump commission. secretary of state has asked every state in the nation to provide donald trump's new voter commission with the names, birth dates and social security information for registered voters going back to 2006. kobach, a candidate for kansas governor in 2018 serves as vice chair of the president's advisory commission on election integrity. in a wednesday later, kobach asked the connecticut secretary of state's office to provide
9:47 am
the commission with all publicly available voter roll data, including the full names of all registered voters along with their addresses, dates of birth, the last four digits of their social security number, voting history and other personal information. take a look at the letter that was sent. this from dennis -- denise meryl, the secretary of state responded. -- denis merrill, the secretary of state responded. jessica, a reporter, has on twitter the letter, the request to all states yesterday requesting information on voter fraud and copy of their voter rolls. you can find that information on twitter and if you're interested in that story. then there's also in "the wall street journal" this morning. shane has this exclusive. operative flynn tie saw clinton emails. he reports before the 2016
9:48 am
presidential election, a g.o.p. researcher mounted an independent campaign emails he believe was stolen likely by russian hackers. conversations with members of his circle and others he tried to recruit, the g.o.p. operative peter smith complied he was working with retired flynn, t general mike at the time a senior advisor to then-candidate donald trump. in an interview with "the wall street journal," mr. smith, the g.o.p. operative, said he knew mr. flynn but never said mr. flynn was involved and mr. flynn didn't respond for request for comment. mr. smith died at age 81 on may 14, about 10 days after the journal interviewed him. the operation he described is consistent with information examined by u.s. investigators probing russian interference. they've seen reports from
9:49 am
intelligence agencies that describe russian hackers obtaining how to obtain emails from mrs. clinton's server and transmit them to mr. flynn via and intermediary. according to u.s. officials with knowledge of the intelligence. tom in clinton, maryland, a democrat, hi, there, tom. good morning to you. what's on your mind? caller: can you hear me ok? host: yeah. caller: a reasonable diagnosis of donald trump's administration and what he's trying to do. i believe that this guy, michael flynn, and paul manafort and all those guys who are agents of the trump administration -- former agents -- are actually money collectors. donald trump i think is a money launderer, and this is how he's made his money. his casinos have all failed. he hasn't made money from casinos. what they do is these guys go over and collect the money from these dictators and what not, go out and buy property, invest
9:50 am
in banks and get a percentage of the money they're getting from these people. and then they go ahead and spread this money around and people can get the money at their leisure. i don't know how they do it. but basically what i feel as though they're doing is they're money collectors. this $500,000 that clinton got from turkey, that's trump's money. he's going to protect flynn until he can get that money from flynn and put it in his bank account. host: and tom -- caller: i don't know if he puts it in his bank account or not because i don't know his tax returns. host: do you have evidence of this? have you heard this on news outlets? where are you getting this? caller: this is a diagnosis that i've come up with that i feel as though speaks for why he is fighting so hard against the inquiries into russia and his collusion with the russian government. host: ok. all right. i'll leave it there. west in ash lynn, kentucky. west, a republican.
9:51 am
good morning. caller: hi, how you doing? host: you got to turn that tv down. listen through your phone, please. caller: ok. i'm here. host: all right. you're on the air. caller: yeah. i'm calling about just the hypocrisy on the left. they talk about donald trump and all these thingses they are accusing him of but there is no evidence at all. you want to compare that to the clinton administration and how he had a scandal with monica lewinsky. of course he was attacked over that. it was found out it was a fact. they have no evidence of anything on donald trump. i mean, it's crazy. why not just give the guy a chance? host: should they report -- should they report, west, the media on the details that are coming out about the investigations into russia's interference in the campaign, into the election? and the possibly -- caller: of course, yeah. host: so that is fair game? caller: i don't watch fox news
9:52 am
blindly. i watch cnn, c-span, everything. but to blindly follow somebody because that's who you are, if you are republican or democrat, it just doesn't make sense. i mean, if we find out that he was colluding with russia, i will be the first one to stand up and say, but what evidence is there? there is none? host: what about a possible cover-up? what if there's no proof of collusion but an effort to cover up or obstruct the investigation? is that wrong? caller: of course, yes, it is wrong. but what i'm saying is report the news factually. don't just make up headlines to get viewers agered and stuff and get -- impeach trump like maxine waters does, like all these leftists do. it just doesn't make sense. why not get behind the guy, give the guy a chance, and if something comes out and investigate him and impeach him if -- host: ok. west is out there in kentucky.

opioid addiction, climbs 500 percent. this story in "usa today" by ann steele. in an analysis of millions of americans' medical claims showed the diagnosis of opioid use disorder surged roughly 500% between 2010 and 2016. the claims that the analysis is based on comes from 30 million people with commercial insurance provided by blue cross and blue shield. opioid use disorder was 40 times more likely in patients prescribed high doses for a short duration compared with low doses for short duration. so that in "the wall street journal" this morning. i keep saying "usa today." "wall street journal" with that story. "new york times," front page of their paper this morning, medicaid data as to hurdle for health bill. projected medicaid spending under a senate republican bill to repeal the affordable care act would be 30% lower after two decades, according to the congressional budget office, which detail how medicaid changes would cut more deeply
9:54 am
as they go fully into force. the budget office analysis created a fresh challenge for republican leaders as they try to muster support for their bill even as senators scattered to their home states for a 10-day july fourth recess. and then the front page of "the wall street journal," trump's travel ban goes into effect and "the new york times" -- "the wall street journal" reporting under the new rules issued by the white house, a sister or husband of an american citizen wouldn't fall under this travel ban. but an aunt or a grandparent would. and then late on thursday, the administration reversed course and included people engaged to be married on the list of those with close family ties who are exempt from the ban. the new rules also came under immediate legal challenge. challengers in one of the two principal legal cases from hawaii made emergency court filings late thursday asking a federal judge there to clarify what the trump administration can and can't do with its partial ban. they argued for a broader set of exemptions. it was unclear when the court
9:55 am
would rule. and then also stories this morning about the situation in iraq. this is "wall street journal" after seizing mosque, iraqis declare isis is close to defeat in the city of mosul in iraq. and "the washington times" has this story on their front page. the texas attorney general ken paxton warned thursday he will sue the trump administration to stop the deportation amnesty for dreamers unless the government voluntarily phases out the program. in a letter joined by nine other state attorneys and the governor of idaho, mr. paxton said the 2012 amnesty created by president obama and continued by president trump is illegal. speaking of immigration, the house yesterday passed two pieces of legislation dealing with immigration and sanctuary cities, cracking down on undocumented immigrants and the localities that shelter them. this legislation urged by the president. "roll call" reporting it faces
9:56 am
a murky fate in the senate. let's go to bob in indiana, independent caller. hi, bob. good morning. we are on open phones. go ahead. caller: good morning, greta. and i kind of feel a little sorry for the journalists because i'm certain because of their access to areas of turmoil and hostile areas they're under pressure to be recruited by intelligence agencies, that you have big corporations and government agencies and politicians pressuring them to kill unfavorable stories and to push favorable stories for them. they have to be under a lot of pressure. host: ok. laura, garland, texas, we are in open phones. good morning to you. caller: good morning. i was listening to your
9:57 am
program. i would like to say something pertaining to fake news. donald trump always talks about fake news, the news is fake, fake, fake, fake. well, he's the originator. he's the founder and he's the c.e.o. of fake news when he put out the report about president obama, former president obama and ted cruz's father, what he had to do with the killing of the president, and he's never retracted on any fake news that he has put out. he's never apologized for any fake news that he has put out. he has never apologized to the women that he has degraded. in o this man is a goat sheep's clothing. host: all right, laura. vince in columbus, ohio.
9:58 am
republican. hi, vince. caller: hi, how are you? host: dwoorning. caller: this is the first time i tuned into your show and i like how you format your show, taking calls from everybody. i really appreciate that. host: glad you're watching. caller: i am going to tune in more often. what i wanted to bring up -- and you know, president trump is no angel by any means. he fights dirty. and he does that because the media -- the media is not for him, ok. now, fox news, they are for the most part. but i mean, one thing i want to point out, 93% of what cnn has reported against the president are negative. now, when obama was in office, 77% of what they reported on obama was positive. so i mean, that's, you know, those are real numbers. host: vince, where did you get
9:59 am
those numbers in case people are interested? caller: the 93% was just leaked by -- there was a watch group that went through all of it, and 93% of what cnn published on the president are negative. and that's why they are getting shut out of -- you know, that's why they are not getting the questions they are used to. there are thrst' no problem -- i have no -- there's no problem -- i have no problem with criticizing him. his tweeting, hey, i disagree with the tweeting. but you have to understand, this guy has been attacked since day one. that's his only way to fight back. and i don't agree with it, but i think what people are missing is he's made a lot of money. he's 70 years old. he knows he's made a lot of that money maybe not the most honest way in the world and i honestly think you have a 70-year-old man that's trying to help the country. i really believe that. now, you may not like his tone or how he does it but his
10:00 am
intentions are good. there's a lot of corruption in washington. i think he's committed to cleaning it up. now, he was part of the swamp when he was out there as a businessman, and i think he's using that knowledge of how the corruption works. i really think he's trying to make the united states a better place. host: ok. vince there in columbus, ohio. that does it for our program this morning. thank you, all, for watching. enjoy your friday and your weekend. and i didn't know it at the time, but nixon had called in two gentlemen and entertained this idea and talked about burning the tapes. i didn't recommend burning tapes. they were executive privilege existed and if he got rid of them and said in effect, impeach and be damned, he would have moved right through it. president nixon said, if he had burned the tapes, as i urged him to do, he would have survived and i think that's right. >> sunday night at 8:00 eastern. president trump tweeting at 8:55, watch low rated "morning joe," fake news, he called me to stop a
