9:46 am
we have so many people who have the intelligence. just like when these to say black people could not play quarterback, but once you put them in there, you can train doctors. we have a lot of intelligent people who could become doctors in 7, 8 years with training. thank you for taking my call. host: now to florida where diane is commonly line republicans. good morning, diane. caller: good morning. they give for taking my call. a couple of things. charles made an important comments, which was part of the reason our health care gives going up his our doctors have to pay for trial liability putsance rates, and nobody on the table, especially, i am sorry, the democrats, to put on the table that we need tort attorneysthat these in tur cannot sue these doctors and get millions of dollars.
9:47 am
the previous caller was talking about how all the people become lawyers are doctors, the smartest become lawyers, and they are controlling the doctors. nobody is talking about for reform. that is to be put -- fo tort reform. that needs to be put on the table. members of congress -- those people have a different health plan fan the average citizen. what is that? that is upside down. we do not have an elitist society. we do not have a class system here. what is that about? that is pretty much all i have got right now. host: let's stay in florida and head over to stanford where we have george calling in on the end of the -- independent line. caller: good morning. thank you for taking my call, c-span, the home of professional journalism.
9:48 am
to follow up on what the previous caller stated so effectively, tort reform is critical, that was a bill actually passed under the radar in june because of preserving the access to health care act that was passed by party lines, , where not a single democrat voted for it, that tort reform, but as long as you have a majority of lawyers running congress and so few doctors in congress, you are going to have obstacles from these card-carrying members of the american bar association that are preserving the obstacles for tort reform. even ave medicine is greater cost than the liability insurance that doctors have to pay. has been medicine estimated in the hundreds of
9:49 am
billions of dollars of wasted -- where doctors order unnecessary tests because they have to protect themselves in court. the key to the solutions for health care are going to be getting a bill through the senate, as imperfect as it might be, in order to just -- the best history, tom in price, to check all the waste, fraud, and abuse and e -- obamacare only added 9 million people, not 33 million people. selena -- the cbo has to get their mastery. -- math street. -- so the math -- the cbo has to
9:50 am
get their math straight. exactly what the last caller said, very critical that tort reform is put into place in order to bring health care costs -- and everybody can be covered if those costs come down. host: kathy is calling in from george on the line for democrats. good morning. caller: good morning. thatt wanted to comment everyone keeps going on about the medical situation about people the uninsured and how it ,s the fault of the democrats there are not enough democrats in the congress to go ahead and do something about it. secondly, why do we even need a congress anymore when mr. trump seems to do whatever he wants to do? he has got almost his entire family on of their. why don't we simply do away with congress and get on with things because it certainly is not working the way it should be?
9:51 am
thank you very much for taking my call. host: to the question of the kind of health care that members of congress have them on the website snopes, looked at this issue. the question here -- do members of congress enjoy free health care? mixture of here is a yes and no. the bottom line is this -- members of commerce and other staff members are required by law to purchase health insurance through the exchanges offered by the affordable care act, however, the federal government subsidizes approximately 72% of the premium costs. further down, he says, "if the of oral care act is repealed, members of congress have a fallback plan to be able to return to the federal health care plan. 20 million other americans won't." let's go to sharon calling from ohio on the line for democrats. good morning. caller:. good morning. .
9:52 am
i have been a c-span listener, incher since it started back .979 thank you fo host: thank you for that. caller: i have watched this program turn into hatemongering. voter fraud -- i voted here for 31 years for at least 10 of those years, every time i walk poll am a theting people checking and try to sway me to republican, and i will fight them until the bitter end. around -- these old, ,ncient people look like relics trying to sway people. not many minorities. and they try, every time ago, they want me to vote republican. i say, "ma'am, i am not a republican, and i will not vote republican."
9:53 am
it took about seven times for me to commence one lady. vote, ime i go back to pray that she will be gone, and then she is gone, but there is another one. host: did you report this to anyone? caller: i reported it to the board. i let them know exactly what is happening. i do not know if they will do anything, but it is coming from the republican people working the polls. how will they account for the? are they going to hold them accountable? you filled timid going into their, use try to -- you feel timid going in there, looking at not belongu do there, my people were brought here, and we have every right to go to the polls. i want cap the denial she is 100% right when she said, earlier, the prior caller. we are falling for it while they are giving everything for their

benefit. donald trump has nobody in this country at heart. if obama did that, these people would have lost their proverbial minds. i thank you for letting me speak. i am so set up. host: we have marie on the line for independents. caller: good morning. i agree with the previous caller . but i'm calling about the tort reform that was brought up. mike's varies with with my son -- my experience with with my son. even though there was a mark against the doctor, he got terrible care, and i found out basically it is very hard to sue a doctor or hospital. they have all kinds of loopholes. because of the disease he had, he was on fluid restrictions, he it was a hot weekend,
9:55 am
restrictions, luid it was ok that the doctors just phoned it in to the icu, and two days later, he was dead. i think that is not really the problem with our medical system. i don't know, maybe other people have seen where they can sue them, whatever, but i found the opposite. the lawyers told me that even i have the case, because he did one thing wrong, there was no way that i could sue the hospital, even though they were neglectful the first day he was in it. host: marie, first of all, i am deeply sorry for your loss. tell us about your son. caller: my son was in an accident earlier in life where he had a brain injury, so he had emotional problems. he had to take steroids. the steroids, because we are predispositions in our family to
9:56 am
have diabetes, he developed diabetes from having to take the steroids. and the first day he was in the hospital, they treated him only for his disease, which causes low-sodium, and the more you drink, they can flesh out your sodium, and it was a hot weekend that weekend two years ago. so they knew he was not feeling right. they checked him and to treat the disease and ignored the problems he was having, the other symptoms that he was having. i pointed them out to the nurse, i called the doctor the first themand basically i told he was having symptoms he was never having before. they ignore that, said it was anxiety and that kind of stuff. basically, the only thing i could do was turn the whole situation over to the medical finding,re they had a but i still cannot get any compensation for his death. he was 28 years old. host: thank you for sharing your

9:59 am
i am sure that we could overcome this if democrats and republicans could get together and work out our true health care for america, and still they would run down party lines. and even though some democrats think it would be a good idea to change it, it would be -- they would be shunned if they voted against it. host: randy: from north carolina on the democratic line. randy, what is on your mind? caller: good morning. you are doing a good job. number one, voter fraud, there is no voter fraud. i would like you to get great palette on c-span if you can. palet on c-span if you can. the states that is not take the affordable care act money, i moved from new york to north carolina, and i went to the

10:01 am
in regards to tort reform i wonder why they never talk about port reform forgotten many factors -- four gun gunfacturers -- reform for manufacturers. they talk about reform all the fix like it's supposed to health care and the lives of american people. have been waiting patiently for the republicans to invite them to the table to fix obamacare. obamacare can be fixed. but republicans refused to write invite democrats to the table to fix obamacare. health care should be a right for everybody.

i didn't serve this country to have a president say let obamacare fail. i did not serve this country to see 32 million people lose their access to insurance. fails the upcoming vote will also hope mcconnell be forced to realize that the republicans will not be able to keep their promise to repeal obamacare because you cannot take away an entitlement, particularly someone's health care. once these votes fail, it is my hope that mcconnell and the democrats can get together on fixing it. people don't like the individual mandate.
