ourselves and planned our own destiny, guarded all the way by the constitution of the united states. on this sunday, constitution day, let us recommit ourselves to our founding principles and rededicate ourselves to our glorious heritage. we have inherited a birthright of freedom. we must defend it dearly, protected jealously, and promote it probably as one nation under god. we must rise to the task of self-governance, prove worthy of the sacrifices made to carve out this magnificent nation, and we must give our loyalty to our republic and its citizens in all that we do. so let us pledge allegiance to our flag, devote our hearts to our country, and demonstrate our love for one another as americans, as patriots, and as the children of god. thank you. >> last week, we heard the bad news that the trump administration plans to end the

deferred action for childhood arrivals program better known as a daca. daca provides temporary legal status to immigrant students if they register with the government, pay a fee and have background checks. the young people who are protected under the program also known as dreamers came today and it is the when they were very young. they grew up seeing the national anthem and pledging allegiance to the american flag. several years ago, i and another senator sent a letter to president obama asking him to establish this program. the president responded to our request and daca has been a huge success. almost 800,000 dreamers have come forward and received daca protection and allow them to contribute more fully to the country as teachers, engineers, lawyers, students and even members of our military. today, thousands of dreamers and family and friends are afraid because this administration's decision to rescind the program.

almost 800,000 young people brought to the uss children will lose their ability to work and be subject to deportation, ending daca will set in motion rolling mass deportations over the course of the next two years. do not believe the spin. repealing daca was not about putting america first. these dreamers are job creators, -- not job steelers. the center for american progress says that ending daca would cost the united states billions of dollars in gross to mastic product in the next few decades. the congress says -- the president says it is up to congress to fix it. congress now has an urgent and closing window to right this wrong and prevent this catastrophe for some many people and their families and communities and their country. the deportation clock is ticking. it was 16 years ago, that i

first introduced the dream act. despite partisan legislation, we gave a path to citizenship for dreamers. in july, introduced the most recent version of it with my friend senator lindsey graham of south carolina. it has also been introduced in the house of representatives. on wednesday, president trump agreed to begin negotiations to pass the bipartisan dream act. we are calling on republican leaders in the senate and the house, senator mitch mcconnell, speaker paul ryan, to bring it to the floor. if they do, i am confident the dream act will pass both chambers of congress with a strong bipartisan vote. and then president trump can decide whether to make it the law of the land with his signature. when we introduced the dream act in the senate, senator lindsey graham said, the moment of reckoning is coming. well, that moment has arrived. the american people are calling

for us to do the right thing. 75% of americans, 70% of republicans want the dreamers to stay in this country they call home. it is time to stand up! it is time for congress to pass the dream act. those members of congress on the wrong side of history will bear a responsibility for forcing hundreds of thousands of talented young immigrants out of our workforce and putting us at the split them at the risk of mass deportation. i will do everything in my power to prevent these young people from being deported. my final messages to all the dreamers out there who are in despair and worried. do not lose faith! keep going to work, keep working for your families, your community and your country. you are not alone. i will not stop fighting for you. colleagues inmy congress and my fellow americans, we will make sure you are here to stay! p.m.s her bed sundays at 7
