this morning after he ordered lags at all federal buildings to fly at half staff due to the shooting. a live look at the flag over the white house. president trump announced he is planning to visit las vegas on wednesday of this week. here is more of your reaction to the shooting from this morning's washington journal. york 'the new sendingadline, " thousands of people fleeing until swat units found and victimsim, more than 50 died and at least 200 were wounded." abovew that number is 400, the wounded people, making it one of the deadliest mass shooting's in united states history. online video of the attack outside mandalay bay showed the singer, jason al performing at

thedean harvest festival there is interrupted by the sound of gunfire, concertgoers ducked for cover. a picture of the "new york times" from someone tending to a wounded person there. you can see the chaotic look in that picture there in the "new york times." roland is calling now from detroit. hello, roland. caller: yes, yes, yes, i'm so -- wow. this ed to wake up to tragedy that's happened to our people in america. but i haven't heard anybody say yet that president trump's mean-spirited rhetoric that he writes ever morning and the day, i guess, could have led to a crazy person bmly even more
11:31 am
crazier. -- becoming even more crazier. it's him. where this tragedy will have to lead to as a possibility. i hope congress and everybody talk to this ld man, trump, and tell him he needs to be quiet. do the work of the presidency, t his staff -- host: row roland, are you still there? bad connection there. we're going to move on to jay. appreciate your participation, roland. jay is calling from high yatsville, maryland. hi, jay. caller: good morning. how you doing? i just wanted to give my condolences for the victims in the shooting in vegas. efinitely was a tragedy.
11:32 am
maybe something can be done with the gun control. i have to add a bit of correction. they're saying that this is the worst shooting in u.s. history. sadly as it is, it is not. the greatest shooting in u.s. history occurred june 1, 19 1, in the greenwood section in the suburbs of tulsa, oklahoma. over 300 black people were shot and killed. so this gives you an understanding. 50 died in this shooting in vegas. over 300 died. 300, and a lot of people don't know. but the fact checkers, i encourage everyone to look into black wall street, greenwood section of tulsa, oklahoma, june 1, 1921. host: jay, thank you. mark from wallingford, p.a. what's your reaction to all
11:33 am
this? caller: well, i think it's horrible that americans are doing this to other americans. and i want to express my condolences for everyone that is affected by this, not just the folks dealing with the injuries, but all of the families that&friends that have to deal with this as well. the point i want to make is, i think the debate about gun out. l is sort of an easy it is maybe part of this discussion, but if you look in europe, where it's difficult to get firearms, there still are terrorist attacks, and there was a terrorist attack at a concert in britain, where several people were killed. and there weren't my firearms used in it. so i think the ideology that motivates this really needs to be part of the discussion. because this person seemed like they planned this out, and if
11:34 am
they were that motivated to kill people, yes, they chose to use a gun, but they might have been able to use something else and be as successful, unfortunately. host: mike, island, new york. good morning, mike. caller: hi. how you doing? host: ok. what's your reaction to all this in las vegas? caller: yeah, if you don't mind, i'd like to say a comment. i don't think it's -- it's not political. those who blame trump are fools am i think this is mower of along the lines that this guy is just crazy. i think the problem is they need to open up a mental facility. some of them closed down in the last administration where i live around the area. there was one closed down. a lot of the people in the city, you can tell by looking at them. this guy wasn't political. he got no thought. just reaction. the mode i can't, what they keep on doing, killing all the stuff and the story and everything that trump said, the democrats. that's part of the problem, too. that's got to stop. i want to say trump, make america great again.
11:35 am
thank you. host: some more tweets from melania trump, my heart and prayers go out to the victims' families and loved ones. she sent that at 8:21 this morning. from the department of homeland security, david lappin, spokesman over there, says the acting secretary has been briefed on the shooting and they're closely monitoring and working with our federal, our state, and our local partners. we have jean calling from mississippi now. jean, what are your thoughts on what happened in las vegas last night? caller: i think it's a horrible tragedy, and i would also like to say that i think it's more mind control than it is gun control that's needed. host: what do you mean by that? caller: well, i'd like to point out that all the hatred that's spewed out every day on every forum by the mainstream media is just unbelievable. and also, i'd like to point out that all this protesting by the

nfl, all this nonsense, you take unstable people in the country, especially the younger people who feel that they've been wronged, this is going to encourage this kind of thing. we're going to have wars in this country. we're going to have more attacks. i wonder if these people who are so privileged, these players that are so privileged and lucky, i wonder if they have ever given that a thought, how they are encouraging our young people to commit these kind of crimes. this is very serious. wake up, america. host: thanks, gina. bernie on the line now from dearfield beach in south florida. hi, bernie. caller: hi, good morning. host: good morning, sir. caller: even my friends in the n.r.a. who own guns, are for background checks. background checks just keeps the guns away from people that shouldn't have them, the
11:37 am
mentally ill, criminals, where it makes it a safer place. you want to do something about it? get off your butts and elect people who will pass sensible gun control. we're not trying to take away your guns. we're just trying to keep them out of the hands of people who will go to the top 32nd floor, open up with a machine gun and kill over 50 people. obviously deranged. not necessary for him to have a gun. and as far as getting it into a hotel, i could have broken down that gun, put it in my golf bag, and walked into any hotel in america and would have would have stopped me. bottom of the bag, could have had 400, 500 bull nets it, nobody would have suspected a thing. so how did he get it into the hotel? where's security? everybody that's secure, there's a way around it. there are more guns they found on planes than they want to
11:38 am
believe. so get off your butt and do something about gun control. host: that was bernie from dearfield beach in florida f. you're not able to get in now, please keep trying, because they will be doing this until 10:00 eastern time when we go to our regular program schedule. but this "washington journal," as ever day, will continue on until 10:00 and continue to take your calls. more from the las vegas police department. we are saddened to report that one of the deceased from sunday night's shooting was an off-duty police officer. we saw that in their earlier press release. but as they continue to put out more information, we'll give it to you. here's a little bit more from our facebook page. ed writes that i was given my first rifle at the age of 8 years old for target shooting under adult supervision. the day i carry illegally licensed -- gun owners like myself are not the problem. evil, crazy people are the problem. wake up america. allison writes, very sorry, but
11:39 am
not surprised. this is the gun capital of the world. number 45 thinks a travel ban is needed. we have our home grown terrorists that can get all the weapons they want or need. and one writes that this is why every other developed nation is superior to the u.s.a. they don't allow their citizens to murder each other with weapons that are specifically designed to do so, because the weapons manufacturers need to make a profit. you can weigh in at our facebook page. it's facebook.com/cspan. more twitter, @cspanwj is our twitter handle. ack to your calls. this one from wichita. ood morning. wichita, kansas, are you there? i don't think we have him. let's try danny in ohio. danny, are you there? caller: yes, i am. host: yes, sir. what would you like to say? caller: well, i'd just like to say that our nation needs to
11:40 am
get back to the god that we were founded on. you know, john adams says fathers achieved independence with the general principles of christianity. i vowed them and i believe now that those general principles of christianity was existence and attributes of god. andrew jackson said that book, sir, is the rock on which our nation was founded. grant said the bible was our liberties. that committed that person that crime last night, right now his soul is burning in eternal hell. the bible is clear about that. if you don't have jesus christ in your heart when you die, those things happen. we need to get back -- you know, i'll just end by saying this. daniel webster said as long as we continue in the bible, the
11:41 am
country will continue to processer it. but if we in our pass period of time neglect the authority, no man can tell what sudden catastrophe may overwhelm us. and bury all of our glory. thank you. host: all right, kenneth from pennsylvania, you are now. hi, kenneth. caller: good morning. host: good morning. caller: sorry to have to, you know, call in on such a somber morning waking up to the news. i don't own a gun. never have owned a gun. i've been around families back in the day that has 30 guns down in the gun cabinet to take out for hunting purposes every now and then, but you just never heard of these mass shootings. i don't think gun control would have stopped this, but i will say that a couple of callers ago, it's disturbing that somebody would mention the nfl at all related to this tragedy.
11:42 am
you know, this is a free country. and there is racism in this country. we must take on racism, starting with our president of the united states. do we have the guts to take on racism in this country? thank you. host: ok, kenneth. let's lock at more pictures from las vegas from the vernight -- host: let's go to mike from arizona. hi, mike.
11:43 am
caller: i'd like to say, first of all, that it's disgusting the way that we always blame our president. we have no respect for the office of the president anymore. i was not a fan of obama's, but i never, ever showed disrespect towards the president, his wife, his daughters. it's disgusting. and i've always enjoyed your show, but it seemed like the last eight or 10 years, when obama started to run, a lot of people would call in with very low i.q.'s with terrible comments, stupid comments. and i think you should better screen people. to see how simple they are before they call in. that being said, let's respect the president. let's try to get along. thank you. host: greg is calling from warren, michigan now. hello there.
11:44 am
caller: good morning. wish it could be under better circumstances. i agree with the gentleman from ohio. we've gotten away from god. and when people love the lord, they won't murder each other. that being said, i also hear people calling in saying the second amendment should be removed. and when they're doing it, do they also want to remove the rules against assemble, freedom of assembly under the first amendment? because these killings happen in grupse group places. so we get rid of the guns, we have somebody driving in with a truck. we need to get the hatred out of our hearts, period. you have those who hate the president. i personally like the president. you have those who i wish there are things he would change, but i also said the same thing about the previous holder of the office. god bless both of them. let's pray for guidance to the president's mind and heart and not sit here in person.
11:45 am
that's part of the problem. we have groups of people in this country who now hate each other so bad that we just want two different countries. this is a sad thing. somebody from virginia called earlier, had a great idea about the trap. i served voluntarily myself in the army. but as i think about it, it did tend to keep us from going left to right into these interventions. i would like to get my prayers called of people, but right now in vegas who lost family members, or who are suffering, and the first responders, people working the hospitals, there are good people out there, but we have to remember, we've fallen away from god and need to get back to god and jesus christ. thank you very much. host: that was greg from warren, michigan. more calls in a moment. "washington post" has this analysis piece already up,
11:46 am
america's deadliest shooting he wants are getting much more deadly. they write here, the mass shooting that killed at least 50 people in las vegas on sunday night was the worst in modern american history. police suspect that stephen paddock fired on the crowd at a country music concert indiscriminately from his hotel room window, killing dozens and injuring hundreds more. it seems as though we only just experienced another deadly mass shooting in american history. it's because we did. about 16 months ago, omar mateen killed 49 people in orlando after pledging allegiance to the islamic state. before that, the record was held by the mass shooting at virginia tech university in 2007, in which 32 people were killed. they look at a timeline of the incidents, of these incidents, and they say that the trend shows that the death toll from these shootings has increased dramatically, according to "the post." they go on to write that obviously any new deadliest incident, they put it in quotes here, will have more deaths than the ones that came before,
11:47 am
from 1949 to 1991, though the increase in the number of deaths was only 9. shooting at virginia tech was more than double that. the killings in orlando added 17 more deaths to the total. how many will end up as victims in las vegas isn't yet known, but it's already twice the toll of the deadliest shooting in history as of 11 years ago. just a little bit of what "the washington post" is writing this morning. gerald on the line now from boston. hey, gerald. caller: how are you? host: ok. caller: i want to send my condolences to the people in vegas. i know it's more than 50 dead, more than that injured. about st wanted to say he scratched his se, he scratched his neck, that's all powerful this theme
11:48 am
is. anyone down here in america and all these countries, everybody, ussr, could come together, and apparently this is a test by him. i hope we get past this test in the united states and all over the world. i just think that god still is in control, and i want everybody to have a good day. all this fighting over 45 and 44 is unnecessary. all this division is not good. i wish everybody could get along. i sound like rodney king. but anyway, i just hope we all can get alock. thank you for listening to me, sir. host: thank you for calling. jim is calling from las vegas. good morning can you. caller: good morning to you, sir, and thank you for your program. host: yeah, tell us -- tell us what you heard or saw anything in the local news, or in person. what was it like in las vegas last night when this happened?
11:49 am
caller: well, where i live, i live in a retired, retirement partmenten clave, if you will. it's got a security gate kind of situation, and there's a clubhouse where people get together and play cards and what have you. and i was leaving that little place, that venue that evening last evening with some neighbors when we heard the sirens that were a few miles away. of course, we turned on the television, and that's when we got the whole thing. that was around 11:00. it was horrible. it was pretty bad, pretty bad. didn't know what was going on for quite a while. the video that we saw were basically people smartphones, and they were shaky and wiggly, but you heard the one audio where you heard the automatic fire, and it was amazingly startled. i mean, this isn't like the movie. this is real, honest to god
11:50 am
rapid fire, lots of bullets. so you know it was serious. my comment basically was, listen, i'm over 60. and i managed to get this far. i don't know how. grace of god, if you will. but i want to just address one thing. stress is a thing that we manufacture in our lives, and it becomes something really terrible. and it will eat your life up. it will eat your body up. and one of the bad things we have, one of the main stresses we have are what you would call a condition, called ptsd. and it's a white-knuckle ride. and i mean to tell you, i've had it for many decades, and i believe this man had it too. and something snapped in him. he played this scenario out in his head maybe over 100 times before he executed it. but he was pissed. excuse my language. but he was bent. and inning we need to address these sorts of issues.
11:51 am
try to calm people down. try to mellow them out. try to get them to talk about whatever those problems are or whatever we can do to make it constructive. otherwise it's festering, boiling pot of who knows what when it erupts. host: jim, a little bit more about las vegas itself. do you think anything will change? we've had many callers call in about casino security and that kind of thing. what can you tell us about how things work there, how someone could make their way into a hotel like that with a gun? caller: well, they certainly could. i mean, you're looking at nevada. evada is -- you can, for a very nominal price, you can purchase a license to carry a concealed weapon everywhere, except for maybe the courtroom. or something like that. now, there's a lot of armed security in each one of these casinos. and generally speaking, no one
11:52 am
is coming here to shoot anybody up. this is the sort of thing you see on tv or bad movies, if you will. who goes to the 32nd floor or something of a major hotel, a major hotel, that would have sensors on the walls or on the outside windows that would detect breaking or anything like that? remove glass, however, and then conduct a shooting spree upon the crowd. this was planned. host: let me ask you something. i'm not sure if you're sticking with local news or national news there. and i'm not putting this out as news, but there's a tweet. we don't have to show it, but someone is tweeting, according to the latest reports in las vegas, police found 10 rifles or guns in his room. is that something that you've heard? caller: yeah, i heard that. i heard that he had several weapons. so this is definitely something you look and the go, well, he liked weapons. but again, the ptsd, this person has stresses. he was looking to relieve stresses. if you know anybody that target
11:53 am
practices, they enjoy it because the boom, the report, the concussion, the knockback, this physically removes a small amount of stress. it does. like hitting a baseball or basketball or whatever you like. there's something to do with it physically that helps you reduce stress. however, use market weapons or anything like that, that's meant for one reason, one thing only, and that's destruction. and the automatic weapons have destroyed people. why would you use it to shoot targets? however, i don't know what the lady, his lady friend, whoever is going to luke nature on this situation, but he was 64 years old from some smaller nevada town north of town here, and it just sounds like an angry man, an angry old man who is just filled up with ptsd and snapped. host: ok, jim from las vegas, thank you for calling and
