tv House Speaker Ryan Briefing CSPAN October 27, 2017 12:35am-12:46am EDT
12:35 am
it is something that they are watching. >> a lot of tax debate ahead. he is a tax policy reporter. he is on twitter. thanks for joining us. announcer: after the houseboat to approve the budget resolution, he explains how it will bring them closer to passing tax reform legislation. speaker ryan: good morning. i am very excited. that, we passed a budget is fiscally responsible, it strengthens national defense and is really good for taxpayers. this budget that we just passed brings us one step closer to historic tax reform.
12:36 am
that means more jobs, fairer taxes, bigger paycheck for americans. the american people have been living under a broken system where they see too little of their hard-earned dollars. they spend hours and dollars just doing their taxes. so much time and money is wasted with this incredibly complicated tax system only to have a big chunk of their income taken. people are really struggling in this country. so many people are living paycheck to paycheck. single moms who live paycheck to paycheck need a break. the guy who just got a job a couple min -- months ago deserves a break. that is what this tax plan is all about. we invest in real people. we really believe that family is no have to invest their money
12:37 am
better than federal government. we believe that families need a break. it will help bring us back to a place of confidence, freedom, happiness, a stronger and healthier economy. it brings us closer to making that dream a reality. >> mr. speaker -- what the conference did earlier this week with multiple investigations into the 2016 campaign, there have been allegations that this is a partisan effort to distract. what is your endgame here? you had strong words for the fbi about subpoenas related to the dossier issue?
12:38 am
speaker ryan: the point of the investigations is to find the truth and to make sure if laws were violated, that they are not made again. transparency is key in that. conduct full to and thorough oversight over the executive ranch. that is a really important responsibility for congress. this is why we are so frustrating to have learned through the media aspects of this investigation that we have been asking for documents from the fbi for months. since yesterday morning, the fbi got in touch with us yesterday afternoon. they have informed us that they will comply with our document requests and will provide documents congress has been asking for by next week. we expect the fbi to honor that commitment. >> on tax reform, you did pass
12:39 am
the final version of the budget. more of your members voted against this version then voted against the original version that passed the house. many of them from new york and new jersey. what are you doing to ensure that you can get it passed? speaker ryan: look at the big step we took today. it was an enormous step in getting comprehensive tax reform over the line and into law. are you ok? this budget we just passed, that is really important for getting tax reform done. the committee will be putting out the specific plan very shortly. they will work with all of our members to address their concerns. i believe the committee will be working with these numbers to -- members to find a solution. >> can you guarantee it will cut taxes?
12:40 am
speaker ryan: the entire purpose of this bill is to cut middle-class taxes. i will leave it up to kevin brady and the committee to tell you about the details because that is their job. they are writing the tax bill. to the refer you committee. i used to run the committee, so i will do for you to them. >> do you agree with the president? speaker ryan: i agree with conference of tax reform -- comprehensive tax reform. remember what we are trying to achieve here. we are trying to help people get a break on their taxes, making it easier for them to plan for the future. in many ways, we are accomplishing that. >> on immigration, can you clarify? leaked ryan: i was
12:41 am
incorrectly. no decision has been made on the timing and nature of. the and how it would be structured and when it will occur. there are ongoing conversations. they are ongoing conversations occurring among all of our members about the various possibilities on how to address the situation. you know we are working on a daca solution. i will say it again. we want to work on a daca solution so we do not have a daca problem 10 years down the road. however when we do that is an ongoing conversation we are having. incorrect leaks are not a way to convey that message. we are talking of different solutions. yourrly this morning, office described the tax legislation as nonpartisan.
12:42 am
most people see it as bipartisan because people from both sides -- two?ou contrast these speaker ryan: without going deep into the modeling, i think having a closed economy model does not make a whole lot of sense. there are some model flaws. leaders. phenomenal the dgn model is the current model. i think they did a lot to poke holes. put a bunch of assumptions in their model and made a bunch of things up to come up with a conclusion that seemed very partisan. that is my fault with the tbc
12:43 am
model. >> on the other side of the retiringcouple senators this week made comments about the president and his behavior. do you share any of these concerns? speaker ryan: here is what i think. just like is a good friend of mine. i wish him the best of luck in the future. manink he is a very good who helped us. he was a voice of fiscal restraint in the house. i do not think the american people care about that. you know what the american people want to see us do? solve their problems. they do not want us yelling at each other. they want to see us fighting for them. they want results. that is what we are focused on.
12:44 am
i believe the mower -- more unified we are to solve the american people's problems, that is what the people who sent us here expect. we work for the people who elect us. those are our employers. anding each other out saying things against each other, what does that do to help the working mom get ahead? what does that do to help a veteran get the care he deserves? what does that do to advance tax reform to give us faster economic growth and bigger paychecks? nothing. that is why we need to stay focused on solving people's problems and staying focused on their problems. >> last question. you also talked about tax reform
12:45 am
. -- thatident has twice .ere big for chairman brady the 401k issue, are you at all concerned about this rollout when you see the choices? i am not because we are working very closely with the white house on this. with the big six, we work very hard on the perimeter and design decisions on what goes into this. the tax writers are working on the details to make this work. we are working very closely with the white house. there will be knows the prizes from our partners in the white house. thanks a lot, everybody. appreciate it.
