78,000 votes. we need a candidate who can win those 78,000 voters in those delivered the presidency to donald trump, and find out what are the issues those voters care about. not the issues we want them to care about. the average americans who have been voting for us since jfk, what do they care about? that is the question the democratic party needs to answer first before it starts talking about names. can anybody follow your show even if they are not in iowa? nationwide every day. you can follow me on twitter. you for your time, and happy new year. one more talkshow host joining us.

from california, john phillips. kabc. a talkshow host on sit, a message into washington dc. i think 2017 has bennie a year of tremendous change. supporter i trump am happy with a lot of the change that is going down. we see bills, a tax bill that came forward, it was promised to us in the campaign. i would look to 2018 and say, infrastructure needs to be taken care of. immigration needs to be taken care of. more people on the courts who share our ideology. weird to see an outsider in the white house. we have not seen that in quite some time. washington certainly does not

know how to react to it. in 2017 we saw a lot of those people have a frustration. 2018 will be similar to that. that is a good thing. host: we have heard from other people throughout the morning, how do you think they are in supporting president trump and the goals he would like to accomplish? anst: i think it will be issue by issue coalition for him. this is something we saw in the campaign. voters see trump as a different brand from the republican party. a huge thingwas for republicans in congress. they had to have a big legislative victory if they hoped to retain control of the senate and the house. i think they got that. people will get their taxes back and be happier. some of those bad numbers we are seeing will rebound.

with trump, it is different. this is a tax bill mitt romney or john mccain or george w. bush could have brought to us. what separates him from republicans in congress is his position on trade, immigration, foreign wars. the important thing for trump is the wall, immigration, trade, and not getting us involved in wars. if he can stick to that, he will keep his people happy. republicans got a great gift with this tax bill. it will help them in the midterms. host: you think that will help in the election coming up? guest: yes. i do not think it is as bad as people think. there are competitive races in orange county. "orange county register." some of those are not competitive. some people think mimi walters

could lose. there is no way she will lose. there are republicans who never warmed up to trump, but they did like him for a whole host of reasons. they did not like that language he uses. they thought he would govern as a liberal, and not someone who shares their ideological beliefs. you saw all of those numbers in a presidential election with high turnout get elected. i do not think there are as many competitive seats as democrats would like to think. a governor'sl see race in california. who are the front runners? is leadingn newsom all the polls. we have a screwy system where it is the top to people regardless of party who move on. polls, the former mayor of los angeles antonio via agosa has comear into second.

others could not break into the top two. i would submit to you that it is not quite gelled. i would not be surprised if other names jump in this race. there is no high profile female candidate. there is some chatter in palm springs that this weekend congresswoman jackie spear -- spier is meeting with advisers. if she does run she is viable. meg whitman, the former ceo of hewlett-packard recently stepped down. she could jump in. i could easily see that deck getting shuffled. i want to ask you about state, one ofur

them is marijuana. what happened? guest: that remains to be seen. we have seen colorado and other states deal with legal hot with some degree of success and failure. here in california, voters have spoken clearly on. in the puddingbe to see if they can roll this out in a rational way. , i am in favor of legalized marijuana, but practically speaking, there will be bumps in the road, and i expect to see those. is the host of kabc.rive home," on tell us about the show. guest: it is that afternoon drive when the freeways look like the arteries of someone who eats a block of cheese for dinner.

we tried to talk about the top stories of the day, and keep people informed and inner change when they drive home from work. host: if people are interested in hearing your show and are not in los angeles, can they do that? guest: they can. we are on kabc.com host: happy new year to you.
