promises around immigration are still in the works because, you can see how he is -- he has been like, morenact, restrictive immigration policies. he also has a lot of energy promises that are in the works. he wants the u.s. to achieve but he isependence, not doing anything to encourage oil and gas productions in the u.s., so those promises are in the works. he also has some promises around health care, get congress to allow health insurance across state lines, that is also in the works. it seems like there is some movement on it, but it definitely has not been achieved yet. host: for politifact's trump-o-meter, you can check it out at politifact.com. angie drobnic holan, the editor, thank you for your time this morning. guest: thank you.
8:40 am
host: back to your calls about 20 minutes before the house is expected to come back in. we want to hear from you on this first day of government shutdown. sam is in coconut beach creek, florida. caller: good morning, john. i wanted to talk about the first year of trump. first, if you ask greta, the next time she comes on, to read that letter that came from the press secretary, a nasty letter, that would be nice, a response to what happened last night. anyway, i watch a lot of the senate, and what trump -- host: sam, are you still with us? i think we lost you there. robert in waldorf, maryland, the republican government employee. robert, go ahead. con jobwhat an amazing the media is running on the american people on this one? if you look back behind you, that it is saturday, guys. the government is not doing much
8:41 am
on saturday anyway. to sit back and listen to how the government is going to run out of money midnight friday night -- the government has been out of money for years! we are $20 trillion in debt. the best thing i could happen as the government to shut down. all of the nonessential employees running around here, if they are so nonessential, they should be laid off permanently. it is ridiculous. one great thing about the government shut down here in d.c. -- the traffic is going to be so wonderful monday. how excited are you going to become a monday, john? traffic will be so easy for you to come into your the biggest scam of all, this is designed to a memop that we have sitting in the building behind you that needs to be released to the american people that proves beyond a shadow of a doubt that the obama administration illegally wiretapped donald trump and donald trump's whole team. they illegally did that, they tapped the phone lines of
8:42 am
-- ica and absolutely host: robert, you are going out, but i think you are referring to , what is being said is available in the house intelligence committee. some executives calling for a memo to that effect to be released to the american public. robert, the caller before you wanted us to read the statement from the press secretary yesterday, sarah sanders. her statement yesterday after that spending bill vote failed to move forward in the senate. she says "senate democrats own shutdownh."ot schumer
8:43 am
host: that was the statement out from the press secretary's office late last night. in florida, caller go ahead. caller: hey, john. i have been watching c-span since 1980. i am 81 years old, and i watch it practically every day. host: we appreciate you doing that, glenn. my hat's off to sarah. she is a very good one for trump. what i wanted to say mainly is how in the world can people say the republicans are in charge? they have the house, the senate, and the president, so they are in complete control -- this is below knee because it takes --
8:44 am
they have a silly rule, an undemocratic rule in the senate that requires 60 votes, and we have only got 51 or 52 republicans, so how in the world can you say we are in control when it is always would be 1, 2, 3, 4 liberal republicans, like lindsey graham in south carolina that is going to vote with the democrats. ,he democrats for the most part they are in lockstep with each other like a bunch of chinese communists, i guess. host: do you think they should do away with the legislative filibuster in the senate, that it should be a straight 51-vote and do away -- yes.r: yes, yes! the senate really is the least democratic part of the know, wet because, you
8:45 am
have got senators with a few million representing states like idaho and so forth, and then you have senators from california florida, andand huge number ofa people compared to other states. i am not against the senate. did it that way, but what sense does it make to have 60 votes? what is the right scenario for that? i would love to know. host: that is glenn in florida. here is greta from downstairs at our news desk. guest: let's follow up on sarah sanders, the white house press secretary's statement that she put out last night here she followed it up with a tweet this year into thee trump presidency, democrats cannot cut down on the looming economy, so they shut down the
8:46 am
government instead. this is the behavior of obstructionist losers, not legislate oars. do your job, democrats -- find our military and reopen the government." number ofard from a viewers who said they have lived through these before. the and and has a chart that ins there have been 18 gaps funding for the federal government over the last few decades. most recent in october 2013 and more than 22 weeks. most recent lasted for 10 days. 17 days in 1978. 21 days in 1995. the last government shutdown five years ago lasted 16 days. "usa today" says not all shutdowns have been destructive. all nine shutdowns recently have
8:47 am
happened over the weekend, and operations have only been minimally effective. -- affected. "usa today" reminds us what in october 20 13, the a formal care act, or obamacare, with the the center of the nations third longest's shutdown. the democratic majority senate rejected the plan, which gutessentially designed to obamacare. the impact resulted in a government shutdown, in which 800,000 government employees were indefinitely for load, and another 1.3 million were required to report to work without any clue when they would actually get paid. whentandoff ended
8:48 am
republicans conceded defeat, and the senate majority leader harry nevada, andtime, of mitch mcconnell of kentucky negotiated an agreement to reopen the government. only silverans, the lining was that the deal included stricter rules for verifying the income of americans accessing obamacare's health insurance exchange or marketplace. who won? obama and the democrats. while polls show the americans widely disapproved of how the government leaders handled the shutdown, republicans got the brunt of the blame. ? john host: back to your calls. bobby, thanks for waiting. caller: thank you, john. tom calling because it seems be people calling in, and if they did not hate, they would not fear. no one is asking "what does god think?" the spiritual element is left out. you have mitch mcconnell blaming the democrats.
8:49 am
he needed a four democrats -- five of them voted. his own people did not vote for it. he obstructed justice by saying appoint a could not supreme court justice. that was breaking the law. the constitutional laws said obama had an opportunity to do that, and they broke the law. he should not be in office. host: peggy, everett, washington, a republican. go ahead. caller: hi. the first comment is for the nice lady that just called. i have been around long enough obama did many of his rules and regulations and how he got his way, and it was not always fair to republicans or conservatives. watched note is i have the whole thing from the beginning to the end. i watched all of the speeches, i
8:50 am
watched the house passed their bill and put into it the c.h.i.p. the cadillac tax and took care of other things, and they needed to have those nine democrats to please come over and vote this in. daca,my heart bleeds for too, we can work it out. it is not fair that millions of americans who are paying taxes are paying out their taxes to take care of the illegal immigrants who came into this country. saddest thing is they want to bring in their whole families, and we cannot have that anymore. i understands both sides. it falls directly on all of congress. they are dysfunctional right now . host: a special line for federal , arnold (202) 748-8003
8:51 am
is a retired federal worker and a republican in west virginia. go ahead. caller: yeah. i was working during the last government shutdown, and i helped negotiate for our local union about some of the results for it. how serious this government shutdown is. i am going to tell you this -- if they shut down the government and for low these guys, the electric will go off for a lot the electriccause is linked to the rivers, a lot of it, and not only that, it will shut down because the barges will not be able to go will not be toll able to go through, and the river controls a lot of this, and the army corps of engineers controls the original. if they do not have anybody and they for low these guys, they say well, we will keep the essential people on, well, many
8:52 am
of the river projects are in bad shape because the government keeps on cutting, cutting, cutting. anyway, it is going to affect more than just a few people. it is going to affect a lot of people on the shutdown. furloughs,at, the they say they keep the essential people and for low the other people. in the past, when they furloughs people, they pay them when they come back. these guys worked, they had to work, and the guys on furlough actually got paid but don't get to come back. that was bad. it also really cut their taxes when people got for load, because they claim more than , so it was pretty bad. host: thanks for the call, arnold. kathy is next. go ahead. us?you with caller: a lot of people do not recognize or remember the fact that when obama took office, we were in a recession, and he
8:53 am
pulled us out of that. trump infact that office is not taking a salary, but guess what? he is making millions and millions of dollars, so what is that salary to him? it is peanuts. a house for $40 million and sell it to the russians for $100 million with a $60 million profit, don't you think that was payback for lifting the sanctions on russia? come on, people, let's wake up. this is ridiculous. even when obama was in office, he had to fight a republican congress. trump does not have to fight a democratic congress. he has got everybody there he needs, but he is just not a politician. he just does not know how to work with people, and that is what he does all this tweetin' s o he does not have to answer questions from anybody. jamie says "the democrats
8:54 am
are a lot of drama queens. they would not do a compromise if it ran them over. the democrats never compromise and never will." save -- the republicans they need time to work on the daca fix. the late was of the bill has been around for years. they are stalling. they are common. he was -- "trump said dealmakertable genius . one year income of both houses, government shutdown." our next call is on the independent line. go ahead. caller: they have got the wrong term on this. an obamactually shutdown. he is the one who led this eight years ago, six years ago, and another thing is, everybody makes such a big deal about a word. how about the hot mic when biden
8:55 am
deal,"his is an f- what obamacare was passed. biden said it. nobody said a word. host: how did president obama lay this shutdown landmine? caller: well, he put in daca, knowing that two people could not agree on the same thing. he could not even resolve the issue. that is why he put it as a -- what is that -- a continuing issue, or whatever? now the republicans are stuck with this thing, and that is all i have to say. host: in terms of the impact of the shutdown around the country, here is a tweet from the jfk presidential library. "in view of the john f.nt shutdown, the
8:56 am
kennedy presidential library and museum, including the research room and all my store, is closed until further notice."the shutdown is in day one. joann is in oregon, on the line for democrats. joanne, good morning. caller: hello. thank you for taking my call. i had a couple of things to say. it basically kind of falls on trump because instead of passing a tax cut, he should have passed a budget. and the tax cut was 83% that went to the top 1%. think that asst far as the wall goes, let mexico pay for it. and also, as far as daca goes, i do not know too much about it, but if they were promised citizenship by obama, i think they should probably have it. that is all i have got to say.
8:57 am
thanks. host: al is in hampton, virginia, a federal worker, a republican. al, go ahead. caller: i know you have a lot of callers. if you would indulge me, i would appreciate it. i am a member of the military, aircraft maintenance supervisor. i generally vote republican, however, the presidential process, i was not impressed with candidates. the shutdown responsibility falls on both democrats and republicans. i will share three points to first, let's look at the facts -- at senator mcconnell stated, the bill that was voted on last night was not about daca policy, it was about government spending for fy 18, and both sides agree on it. doc at least be on a separate bill with a sec reppo, not a tagalong. without understanding, democrats are at fault. you asked how we prepare for a shutdown, the reality is, a c.r. kicks the can
8:58 am
down the road, we cannot employ our people because the administration. we were holding a regularly scheduled drill for over 1000 members. we had to cancel of drills and turn people away, some who are drawing as -- driving in us for a sex i or flying in from out of state. in from six hours away or flying in from out of state. profound. wasted is point number three, the military cannot function without it s civilian workforce. the comment earlier, just wait until you have backpay kicks in -- that is unacceptable. imagine the spouse of a deployed military member who struggles to buy groceries for the kids because the civilian workers are on furlough and they cannot process the pay? that is unacceptable.
8:59 am
here is the fix -- since our federal government processes, any shutdown of a federal government operation should actuall absolutely include every paycheck. that is all i have. host: jerry is also a federal worker, republican, go ahead. the house is about to come in. let's see if we can get your statement in. caller: i was there during the last shutdown, and we did get paid for our time after the shutdown was over. everybody is not an essential worker. essential. are more for some reason, supervisors are made essential. i think this is also the democrats' fault. dacadid not need to attach to it. daca is not going to expire until march. they have plenty of time to work. host: jerry, we have to leave it there. come in. is about to
9:00 am
it is going to be a relatively short session they will be gaveling in four. stick around here on c-span. we take you now live to the floor of the house of representatives.
