1:13 pm
shutdown -- i don't know what it's called. , for themrvice people -- host: you are breaking up a little bit. and go aheadvision with your comments and we will see the breakup ends and become less confusing. for the service people, i think they shouldn't have to shut down for the service people. we need them for the borders and everything like that. for the other people, for the foreigners and the kids, kids that are born in the united states in other foreigners, it should be out of the country. i don't believe in that, i don't like them. i do not like people taking over our country if they don't pay
1:14 pm
taxes when they are in our country. to the federal government shutdown. next is spencer, massachusetts. kurt on the independent line. caller: thank you for taking my call. and ihed this last night blame this on donald trump, the president. he wants this, he wants that, changes his mind. andants to build that wall he was going to have mexico pay for it and now he's trying to have the people of the united states pay for it. i'm all for the veterans, i'm all for the chip program and the daca program. but he just doesn't have a handle, shame on him. i just want to say thanks for taking my call i blame donald trump. host: we'll be up a line for federal employees. 202-748-8923. frank is next.
1:15 pm
what is it that you do for the federal government? caller: i actually worked for the department of justice, federal corrections officer. host: what if you been told by your supervisors, your agency? caller: we are still suppose report monday to go to work that we're not going to get paid. i've been a government lawyer for over 20 years and this is my fourth cr. i just hope that both parties get it together today and try to work something out to get this government going. there's a lot of important things, we need to get this government going, because it's not good. host: you will show up for work on monday and you won't get paid. assuming at some point in the next few days or the next week or so the government reopens, do you get back pay for those days that you miss? caller: we do get back pay for it, and then we get taxed on it. it's not good all the way around for morale.
1:16 pm
both parties need to sit together and try to work something out. this is the fourth one you've gone through, do you anticipate this and you set aside money in an emergency fund just in case things like this happen? fortunatelyo, and i'm able to do it. but 20 heart of the families and it's going to be hard on families across the country. host: we appreciate you calling in. glenallen, virginia. republican line. go ahead. i was just watching chuck e. cheese on tv, where he's talking about all these things are going on a in new shares no blame for anything. he is just holier than thou. me. amazing to i think that schumer and his democrats have totally lost reality and lies are and he thinks the american people are going to take it. enough of this daca stuff.
1:17 pm
i'm a cuban i came here with a valid visa and i had to wait my turn. i never took any government benefits. i worked hard and i'm paying for all this stuff when american children of my own kids are having to be cut back because we are providing services for people that don't belong here. it is the law, it is our law. if the democrats don't like it, and they had all these years under obama. this is the obama disaster that we've had to continuously clean up on. it's absolutely sickening. but this is not trumped disaster. the president is doing with the president ran on, and what we do is just what he was elected to do. enough of it. we have a country, we don't have the world. we are not responsible for the world. it's about time that we started realizing what he to take care of our own. thank you so much. i think the president is doing a fabulous job. let's make america great again. diana in's hear from woodbridge, new jersey.
1:18 pm
the government shutdown. what do you think? caller: i believe this is all donald trump's fault. i'm a democrat and i did not vote for trump. i hear some of the republicans talking all morning on this channel. i turned it on to watch the women's march, by the way. i would really like to see the women's march rather than talking about the shutdown. however, donald trump has lied. i believe that mitch mcconnell is just as much to blame. i think you should get everyone together, get something on the floor and vote for it and put it in front of the president and let the president assad. if he vetoes it, they can override his veto. but i think this is republicans fault. they are in charge of the entire government right now. from is a liar, he lied to the democrats and to the american people. and now the american people are suffering and they have no one to blame but the people who are in power, and that's republicans and donald trump.
1:19 pm
host: thank you. from diana and all of their viewers interested in washington, the house and senate are the priority, they are the reason the c-span was founded and live coverage of the house and senate when they are in session. houses on c-span and once again later this afternoon at 3:00 eastern, the senate on c-span two. we are covering the women's ,arch, if you go to c-span.org you can see livestream coverage showing that now from the national mall. vegasr from j next on las independent line. caller: i spent 20 years in the air force and i retired from this country -- serving our country and doing all that good for our country. i look at these guys and i scratch my head. i'm an independent, i voted for trump, and i think we need to drain the swamp, because these guys can work together and they can't get their act together.
1:20 pm
there is no integrity or character amongst these people. iny talk around each other the last caller talks about lies. oh my gosh. it amazes me how people are today when it's obvious you need 60 votes in the senate to pass a resolution. it is democrats fault and it is all on schumer. host: you do need 60 votes to move forward. we will take your calls for about 10 more minutes and provided no other life briefings happen, we're going to show you some the closing comments by senators late last night in the senate. mike is in baltimore, federal employee. what do you do? caller: thanks for taking my call. i'm a scientist working for the government. i probably will not go work on monday because of the shutdown. that will hurt us as a country
1:21 pm
in several ways. the shutdown has been engineered, carefully, by the right-wing. we heard senator schumer's comments this morning, sort of recalling the steps. interest groups are lined up high and trump to take advantage. trump is a tool for them the engineered it greatly. now we shut down the government and those who recall the days of reagan and his inauguration, his famous line government is not the solution, government is the problem, this is the kind of 18th century thinking which is hurting us now. particularly because the world is globalizing and if we want to lose our position in the global economy, then you would take out the dreamers, a cohort of well-educated people ready to join the labor force, helping us remain competitive. it's totally self-defeating.
1:22 pm
everything that is behind the shutdown coming from the republican side. i can only hope the cooler minds prevail and that we can get back to getting our country great again. host: a reminder, we set aside that line for federal employees. 202-748-8923. showed you the photo that was tweeted by sarah sanders, the press secretary from overseas and afghanistan from a soldier a fn, the armed forces network due to government shutdown, a services are not available. i wanted also show you some reaction to that or comment on that. o'keefe, the washington post tweets about that. if that is true and it persists how this may mean the troops overseas won't be able to watch sunday's nfl conference chairmanship games. bill is an arlington heights, illinois on the republican line. your take on the government shutdown and where things stand on capitol hill. caller: good afternoon, bill. hopefully you are doing well in
1:23 pm
washington. my comment is a two word comment, term limits. the american people as we know have an approval rating of 14% for congress and yet they continue to get reelected. big-money and interests are part of this. i know mattison gave us term limits are people talk about term limits or terms of election, but if you look at what happened in the last 20 to 30 years, just not working. the system does not work. these men are entrenched and orrin hatch is an example of that. he said he didn't believe that people should last forever in congress, yet he was there over 40 something years or you i don't think the founders would support term limits as a constitutional amendment, but i think that's the answer. it was harry truman who once said a statesman is a dead politician. i think that's kind of leading us towards the need for term limits. have a good day. host: to charlottesville, virginia on the democrats line. as is able. caller: thanks for taking my
1:24 pm
call. one only actually heard representative say what the american people are actually thinking, and that is this is everybody in congress is false. we are mad at a republicans and the democrats. this is not any one person or one group's fail, this is a congressional failed. this is #congressional shutdown. thank you. on c-span, to let you know where things stand, we're going to continue taking your calls for a few minutes. the government shutdown at midnight last night after the senate failed to move forward on the continuing resolution. the senate is back in session this afternoon over on c-span2, and the house will be coming back into session in an hour and a half. we will have been at 3:00 p.m. eastern. is 3:45 or 4:00, they will vote on what's called the same day rule allowing them to have same-day consideration
1:25 pm
of legislation. that's as far as we know things are in the u.s. house. no word yet on any agreement or plan. we showed you the comments a short while ago from senator chuck schumer, and we expect more briefings throughout the afternoon as well. pendleton, indiana on the independent line. hello to leave. -- lee. caller: there needs to be clarification that even though trump is a republican in the house and senate are both republican, the house requires a 50% to pass it, but the senate requires 60 votes i think there are only 51 or 52 republicans, so there has to be bipartisan support for this. you have a few senators that can shut it down and they are doing it for cynical purposes. it's very disappointing. host: it is a narrow band of. they needed that 60 votes last night about what's called a cloture vote, moving forward
1:26 pm
towards final passage last night , which is often the case in the u.s. senate. they needed the 60 votes and they fell short last night. let's hear from janine, i federal employee in utica, michigan. janine, go ahead. employee'm a federal and i have been a federal employee my entire life. i started 17 years old and i've been working well over 30 years. host: what kind of work do you do? caller: i'm an administrative action officer. ourtually deployed civilians into afghanistan, iraq, kuwait. that's part of the main duty of mine. i'm very active in our military. i have seen over my years, when you have a government that has to have a budget the 30th of september, it was a dropdead date. we started this terrible downhill ball rolling once we started saying we will do 30
1:27 pm
more days, 30 more days, 30 more days. the american people are tired of being held hostage by the minority of what the government is. it congress, the representatives, our entire federal government. you know what you are elected not -- thes is american people do not need to be held hostage for political reasons. and this is what the government has come. their rules, there are laws, their mandates. and let's try to put our personal agendas aside. i've been doing this for well over 35 years. i've seen a whole bunch and i've been through shutdown, i've been through just about everything that the federal government can throw at us. our problem is our elected officials. they forget that they been elected for the american people. the american people want them to get off of their high horse, get
1:28 pm
to work, quit acting like five-year-olds and get a damn budget passed so we can go forward. and let's try to keep our personal little agendas out of all of this. i'm not in favor of daca. the people who called, you have more than enough time to get into this country and do it legally. do not hold our american children military and the rest of the u.s. government's and u.s. population hostage for your pet projects that don't include the american people. host: janine, we appreciate your comments this afternoon. i hope you get back to work soon. terri is in louisiana on the republican line. caller: i think it's time for democrats and republicans to
1:29 pm
recognize who put them in office. the people, not donald trump. other republicans are catering to trump and they are fighting each other. two the independent line to hear from jerome, churchill, tennessee. caller: thanks, c-span. signal of afghanistan, my brother has been up there overseas for 18 years. he just called about five minutes ago and asked me if i've seen anything on tv about the ,ockets coming to the hotel they're not exactly shooting at the embassy. i said no, we have the shutdown and we have the women's marches. said thet told him i
1:30 pm
circus is back in town. it's another groundhog day. democratsion, the will try to keep donald trump down. this --uld like to end it's kind of like a movie. it's hd wells. instead of war the world's comments were of the words. we need to settle things out. host: jerome in tennessee. you are correct about the attack in afghanistan, we have not noted that. we will try to find some details. we are covering here on c-span, c-span2, the liberations -- the deliberations of the house and senate. the senate is in session live on c-span two. here's where things possibly stand in terms of the way forward. this is a piece by john bennett from rollcall. his piece headlined white house
1:31 pm
, thels back to gop leaders president met with chuck schumer. he writes white house is negotiating with senate majority leader mitch mcconnell on a way out of the government shutdown after talks with minority leader chuck schumer failed on friday. secretary sanders told roll call, because the white house and gop leaders need some democratic support to clear a 60 vote threshold, it's not clear how this approach would solve republicans sent a math problem. john bennett writes it's possible white house officials are working with mcconnell on approach discussed late friday and early saturday on the senate andr by a bipartisan group an the group's proposal, senate democrats will i with three-week continuing resolution to pass and mcconnell would allow a floor debate on legislation to address the expiring deferred action on childhood arrivals immigration program in the coming weeks. read more at rollcall.com. that cloture vote last
