women. with that, i will take your questions. reporter: a quick question -- [indiscernible] iran would not renegotiate -- ms. sanders: we do not have any announcements at that time. when the president has a final decision on what he does in terms of the jcpoa, we will let you know. reporter: can you explain why the president a few weeks ago when he was talking about the payment to stormy daniels, why the president was not truthful with the american people. ms. sanders: as mayor giuliani stated, this was information that the president did not know at the time, that eventually learned. john? reporter: to take a broader view on this, you cannot talk about
2:38 pm
the details, but when the president so often says things that turn out not to be true, when the president and white house showed what appears to be a blatant disregard for the truth, how are the american people to trust or believe what is said here or what is said by the president? ms. sanders: we give the best information we have at the time. i do that every single day and we will continue to do that everyday in this position. reporter: but when the story first happened that ty cobb would be leaving, the president said satan is, that it was not true. when we talked about the prisoners in north korea, he said the previous administration had failed to get them out. two of them were taken prisoner while donald trump was president. and obviously, the totally conflicting statements on the stormy daniels payment. these are statements that are just not true. ms. sanders: when it comes to
2:39 pm
north korea, you can also look warmbier who was detained during the previous administration, so that would reflect the president's comments that he make it when you refer to the last incidents, as mayor giuliani stated, this was not initially known, but later. again, we get the best information possible at the time, and we will continue to do that every single day. inorter: but michael: back february -- michael cohen back in february, -- ms. sanders: i will not get into those details and i would refer you back to the statement, lengthy statements made by and thislast night morning as well as the president's. president's tweets.
2:40 pm
reporter: the president talked about monthly retainers in his tweets. how can you only be aware of something 10 days to two weeks ago but at the same time be in the process of paying monthly retainers that apparently covered this reimbursement to michael cohen? ms. sanders: the details of the ongoing litigation, i would refer you back to -- reporter: you said on march 7 there was no knowledge of any payments from the president, and he has done night all these -- denied all of these foundations. were you lying to us at the time? ms. sanders: the president continues to deny the underlying claim, and i give you the best information i had at the time -- and i would refer you back to the comments you midget a few minutes ago against the mayor giuliani -- reporter: but that statement was in reference to the payment. ms. sanders: i give the best information that i had and -- reporter: that you know at the
2:41 pm
time -- ms. sanders: and the president -- reporter: why can't you just answer a yes or no? ms. sanders: it is a civil answer that i have given you, i will give you the best information i have and will continue to do that every day. can you give us an update of the three americans being held in north korea? ms. sanders: we cannot confirm the validity of any of the reports out about their release. but we certainly would see this as a sign of goodwill if north korea were to release the three americans ahead of discussions between president trump and kim jong-un. reporter: in addition to being an attorney for the president, does mr. giuliani have a wider -- to talk about things i foreign policy? ms. sanders: not that i am what where. reporter: i wanted to ask you
2:42 pm
about the report citing u.s. intelligence that the chinese have installed new missile platforms on the islands and the south china sea, and they appear to be raising fighter jets there. pilots are being warned that the chinese military personnel are pointing lasers at u.s. military djibouti and africa, injuring american pilots. does any of this cross a redline, and how does the president respond? ms. sanders: we are aware. we have raised concerns with the chinese about this, and there will be near-term and long-term consequences, and we'll keep you up today. reporter: thanks a lot. were you caught off guard by mayor giuliani's comments? ms. sanders: i'm not legal team and will not be part of this discussion. the president come is he pleased with the job that mayor giuliani is doing right
2:43 pm
now in that he has opened the president up to some sort of criminal liability as a relates to federal election campaign violations? ms. sanders: i would discuss that with the president. reporter: so is president pleased with the job mayor giuliani has done? ms. sanders: i have not had that conversation with the president. reporter: when was the last time that the president talked to is hel cohen, and still his attorney? and is the president concern that any conversations he would have high-end with cohen would have been -- with the wiretap we heard about today? i am not sure when the last conversation took place. on the second part, i'm not aware of specific places where he is representing the president, and on the last one, i would refer you to the president's outside counsel. reporter: when did you
2:44 pm
specifically know that the cohenent had paid mr. the $130,000 payment? ms. sanders: during the interview last night. reporter: you said when you have given answers that that information is what you had at the time. now your position is you will not comment because it is ongoing litigation. have you been advised not to weigh into this to protect yourself from any potential legal exposure by giving false information or information that proves later not to be able to be withstood in court? ms. sanders: no, but i would advise against giving false information -- reporter: when you said before that you give the best permission they have -- when it turns out not to be correct or accurate, are you then trying to limit the liability that you may encounter by not dealing with
2:45 pm
any of those questions now and putting it all off as you say it is ongoing litigation? ms. sanders: again, i'm giving the best information i have. some of the information i am aware of and some i am not. when i can answer i will, but beyond that, i do not have anything to add. reporter: something the mayor said last night, he said he, being the president, fired comey because comey would not say he was not a target of the investigation. is that the white house position now explaining why james comey was fired? ms. sanders: there are a number of reasons he was fired. the bottom line is he does not have to justify his decision. the president has the authority to fire and higher, and every single day we see that he is made right decision to fire james comey. there are a number of reasons he was fired. he was politicizing the fbi, and the president has
2:46 pm
been proven to be exactly right. sorry, major -- reporter: you agree with that -- ms. sanders: go ahead. reporter: can you clear up this timeline of it as when exactly did the president learned that the payments were go to cohen to cover for stormy daniels? ms. sanders: i refer you back to mayor giuliani's comments. reporter: did the president know that giuliani would be talking about these points last night? ms. sanders: you have to ask him. reporter: rudy giuliani has commented publicly on the north korea -- are they involved in any way in the efforts to secure the release? ms. sanders: not that i'm aware of. reporter: why are they commenting? ms. sanders: you would have to
2:47 pm
ask them. reporter: the present authorized the art that may have gathered to medications between him and his personal attorney? ms. sanders: i am not sure about the comets or claims on that report. that is something you would have to talk to the department of justice. reporter: but the reporting that -- ms. sanders: i have not talked to him about that, and i cannot clarify the ability for. reporter: the payment question, how many payments to the president make to michael cohen after the election? ms. sanders: you would have to ask the present. reporter: rudy giuliani said it camening and imagine out on october 25 in the middle so does thedebate, white house now acknowledge that that payment was made with politics in mind? ms. sanders: i'm not aware of the back and forth and i would refer you to the president's outside counsel. reporter: yesterday the

2:49 pm
relations with the united states will be rejoining his government. this raises another question -- you said that the president would have a summit with mr. putin sometime in the near future. can you give us any clues when that will be, anything that will determine the possible trouble-putin summit? ms. sanders: nothing has been finalized. summit thatnext big the president will engage in will likely be between president trump and kim jong-un. beyond that, i do not have any update. reporter: there will be no meetings likely with president putin before the summit? ms. sanders: not that i am aware of. nothing is finalized. the president would be very much open to sitting down with the leader of russia. reporter: thank you. a progress question in regard to
2:50 pm
the memo that the conventional oversight -- this is extortion. what is the white house response to -- calling it extortion, and does the president support the freedom caucus' articles of impeachment? ms. sanders: the president would like to see the request of congress to dfoj met. i am not discussed with him about the articles of impeachment. reporter: [indiscernible] there are a number of allegations, one in which you lie during congressional testimony and has been continually had a number of contradiction since then, which i pointed out that the president said. he has learned every day since firing comey it was the right thing to do and has been justified in doing so.
2:51 pm
presidentback to the frank lee not have to have a justification. he can hire and fire whoever he wants, and he made the decision to fire james comey, and that is a decision he stands by and one he feels very justified in. reporter: argue correctly saying that he was fired in part because he would not help with the president he was not a part of the investigation? ms. sanders: i have not talked to the president about that. reporter: he filed a report that cannot include a loan to michael cohen -- [indiscernible] ms. sanders: you would have to talk to the president's outside counsel. reporter: talking with giuliani and the north korean prisoners -- ms. sanders: i am not aware they said about that that. reporter: were you aware that giuliani was going to talk about them on tv -- ms. sanders: i cannot talk about
2:52 pm
that. reporter: the president -- and is it down with kim jong-un -- ms. sanders: i will answer the first question. reporter: this he prefer to sit down with kim jong-un versus bob mueller? ms. sanders: the president feels like stopping a nuclear war and helping protect the safety and security of people across the thee would certainly be number one priority of the president of the united states, and certainly i would think would be the priority that most americans would share and support the president doing. i will take one last question. two questions. [indiscernible] at this point can you tell us if
2:53 pm
the president plans to answer the questions from bob mueller and if not, what is now in place here at the white house to go through that process of a subpoena, possible indictment, possible grand jury? ms. sanders: those are all questions you would need to offer to outside counsel. to rudy: going giuliani, did he do harm to the president today and last night in his conversations to fox? ms. sanders: i do not believe so. see call why didn't the white house press office about his statements about what was happening? ms. sanders: the white house press office would not coordinate with the president's outside legal -- reporter: he said he was blindsided -- ms. sanders: actually, i do not use that term. not all due respect, you do know much about me in terms of what i feel and what i do not -- reporter: then how does this operate -- and the chinese president in
