going a long behind schedule a little bit for the next couple of years. when the obama administration came into power, they decided to cancel the project because of harsh local opposition to it. aboutas stalled it since 2010. with the new trump administration and republicans in power in the house and senate, people are saying this as a renaissance of four yucca mountain. would do.at this bill it presents a new strategy to get this going again. doing what needs to be done so the application currently pending can go forward. it also does some stuff that gets it to be bipartisan.

it authorizes an interim storage program which was led by the obama administration. two-step approach that gets everyone on board and does a comprehensive nuclear waste strategy for the country which has been lacking for the last eight years. >> the bill comes out of the energy and commerce committee sponsored by john shimkus of illinois. passing the committee with a pretty overwhelming vote. you detailed some of the items on the bill. it comes to the house. is the house support likely to be as strong as in committee? >> yes. tons ofe 81,000 ettrick this nuclear waste spread across 35 states. it does not matter what party you are coming you do not want that in your state. which is part of the problem that nevada has with hosting this nuclear waste repository. the nuclear waste has a long

half-life meaning it will stay radioactive for thousands of years, probably longer than currently recorded history. that is a problem for a lot of people. they want to get it out of their states. it moved onto the energy and commerce committee on a 49-4 vote which is pretty unheard of because this issue has divided the house and the senate for so long. to see such a strong vote come out of committee, i think that will carry over. the nevada opposition will get vocal in the next week. >> let me show our viewers some of this opposition. this is from the congresswoman -- representative shimkus will bring his "screw nevada 2.0 bill" to the floor. why it in the past has nevada's

delegation been so strong in resisting these types of measures? if it passes the house, where does it stand in the u.s. senate? >> that is the big problem right now. and i mentioned that in the first question. the project was canceled in 2010 by the obama administration because there is such a long -- a strong local opposition to it. made one of his central tenets of his time in the senate -- opposition to the site. this carries over to the bipartisanship in the nevada delegation. you are going to see representative jacky rosen, currently running against senator dean heller in the nevada race -- she will come out just as strong as the other senator that you mentioned. this is an issue that unites

nevadans. it is not just party lines. this will pass the house but it will run into the opposition in the senate where senators dean heller and senator catherine cortez masto are willing to put up a bill investor. the senate is looking at doing some of its own nuclear waste management. senator feinstein and another senator are talking. their energy water bill talks on -- touches on a lot of these issues. it has been a priority for them to get that going. there is some hope that the senate could do something but this current bill is likely to have to go uphill to get past the senate. >> we are speaking to jeremy dylan who is energy and environment reporter for cq roll call. as can follow his reporting
