meeting with senators on capitol hill and moving that story forward just a little bit. caldwell of nbc tweeting this, lisa murkowski entering the capitol on the way to talk to her colleagues said she supports jeff flake's proposal for a one-week delay. and an investigation. and from the chief political correspondent "politico." no week for a week unless flake and murkowski is bluffing. what do you think of today's session, the advancement of the nomination? the number for democrats is 202-748-8920. republicans, it's 202-748-8921. and for independents and all others, that's 202-748-8922. we welcome our c-span radio listeners as well with a reminder here on c-span, in just a little bit after we wrap up with your comments and calls, we will show you the entire judiciary committee that got under way this morning at about 9:30 or so here on the
2:45 pm
east coast. let's go first to waterville, ohio, and our democrats' line, chris, good afternoon. caller: good afternoon. i just wanted to say three things. first of all, i really appreciate senator flake taking the time and giving us a pause as a nation to come together. i feel that, number one, he failed the job interview. was belligerent, kavanaugh, when he was interviewed. he was antagonistic. i know that his life has been shaken up, but he's not the only one. my second point is that i also -- i experienced rape experienced rape when i was demredge. i have no idea i got home, whose house i was in, and there
2:46 pm
are details missing from that. i have no doubt in my mind that it happened. it was an authoritative figure. i haven't spoken about it except to very close friends. host: how long, chris, did it take you to tell your friends about it or tell someone else about it? caller: years. it took -- years. it took me years. i still -- there are very few -- there are people that know. there are maybe three that know in my whole life. so still years later, it's something that haunts me. i am in my 50's. third, i just want to say i think it is extremely hypocritical of the republicans to say that this delay is out they ds or crazy when layed the appointee that
2:47 pm
barack obama put forward. i just think that is so hypocritical. i have been just sitting here watching this, sweating, crying, and feeling sick to my stomach for this entire week. host: well, we appreciate you calling in. let's go next to greenville, south carolina, scott on the republican line. caller: thank you for taking my call. i want to make three quick points. understand what senator flake did and i've called his office and told him. but i don't agree with it. number two, in senator whitehouse's words, if you lie about one thing, your whole testimony's a lie. well, ms. ford lied about flying. she was scared to fly but come to find out she flew all over the place. and number three, what people have to understand is, not all women tell the truth. i was investigated for eight
2:48 pm
years under false allegations. host: sexual assault allegations, scott? caller: sexual assault allegations. i came home and found five policemen that had kicked in my front door, standing at my front door from vacation. they told me i sexually ssaulted a girl the day before , and she said, i don't have any witnesses but he sexually assaulted me in his home. there were crime scene investigators at my home. i was 418 miles away with 70 witnesses. host: how long did it take you -- how long did it take you, scott, to clear your name of these allegations? caller: i actually sued the state and won. host: this is south carolina, you're talking about? caller: well, no, this didn't
2:49 pm
happen in south carolina. but i sued the state and won. and the girl walked away. i mean, there were four different girls, they were all friends, and come to find out one of them drove by my house and the only thing that saved me is i rented a car. and saw my car there and thought, well, now we can pen him down and i was -- pin him down and i was gone. that's the only thing that saved me, there was a rental car and they pulled up the search on my phone to find out where i was making calls from. and the calls happened to be from florida. host: all right. let's go on to wheeling, west virginia. this is jerry on our democrats' line. caller: yeah. agree with senator flake. the f.b.i. should question the witnesses before the hearing. d also, who paid for the
2:50 pm
grants? that was never answered at the hearing. -- kavanaugh questioned host: jerry, you're talking about the polygraph that christine blasey ford took? caller: yes. host: her lawyers mentioned they were paying for it. they were talking about doing the work pro bono. that's not a quote directly but i think that was the answer to that question. i didn't like kavanaugh questioning the senators. just like it was a joke like drinking and parting and the said she senator never dodd-frank and partied and he apologized to her. but he also was -- when they
2:51 pm
questioned him, he started questioning senators for different things. host: jerry, let me scufment he president is coming to your state for a rally. joe manchin, no indication of whether he would support the nominee. how do you think joe manchin will vote? he's stated on television news he would vote for kavanaugh. host: thanks for that, jerry. we go to san diego, california, on our independent line. caller: thank you so much for taking my call. so i had two things. one was political and one personal. you know, politically, i left the democratic party after being in it for a lifetime because they won't stand up against the republicans when they have the power. when they're out of power they force to a unified
2:52 pm
beat them. they got tricked at the end. jeff flake had an agreement with the democrats in the background. and then came out and the democrats could have held a quorum. they could have done a number of things but they thought they had an agreement. turns out there is no agreement unless the majority really goes along with it. this is the kind of things where the democrats get rolled time after time by the republicans who continue to out with them in these political games and it's a shame. personally, i'm embarrassed to be a man in this country. men watching this hearing purporting to lie afterwards about what was said, making stuff up. not taking responsibility for how they act. keeping the boys will be boys attitude going, when this is the most important body that makes decisions and our daughters and sons will have to and they lie -- you had
2:53 pm
a caller just a second ago said the woman lied because she said she had a fear of fearing. she said she wouldn't fly. she had a fear of flying. they make this stuff up. it's an embarrass to live in a country -- it's an embarrassment to live in a country that their democracy allows this thing to going on. it's a shame. it's a travesty. host: josh from ohio. john on our republican line. your thoughts on where things stand on judge kavanaugh where the judiciary committee this afternoon approving to recommend his nomination, i should say, with the caveat from senator flake that he's calling on a one-week delay for an investigation by the f.b.i. john, go ahead. caller: first, let me say, thank you for taking my call and thank you, chris, my fellow ohioan, he called up opening up
2:54 pm
sharing her experience. no three minutes could tackle all the moving parts going in this situation. as a college student who is in the job search and internship search, i will tell you if i were talking to an employer and something were to come up from a routine background search and there were red flags and they were talking to me, i were as evasive as kavanaugh were in answering very basic questions and pri to turn questions back on my inter-- i were to turn questions back on my interviewers, and as president trump said, there will 100 qualified candidates behind me, they would move on. i fail to see how anyone can see that kavanaugh deserves to be in this powerful of a position and that, you know, people are shooting down what dr. ford is saying and honestly, it baffles me to this day that, you know, people -- it's disintegrating to the point where people are in such disagreement. i think it's gone too far. i think an f.b.i. investigation
2:55 pm
of one week is the absolute minimum. i wish, you know, senator flake had taken a stauncher stance and voted no. given the situation we are i think that's the best we can have at this point. host: john in ohio. appreciate that. getting news that joe manchin is supporting jeff flake in the call for a one-week investigation. we had a caller from west virginia a moment ago. we'll see if you can find his statement. it's just been released. we'll go to helen who is in -- here in the nation's capital on our independent line. helen, go ahead with your comment. caller: yes. i agree with the gentleman that just called in from ohio. also, what i like to know is, why is it that the president has to authorize an f.b.i. -- authorize the f.b.i. to do the investigation? what's the reason for that? host: some members have stated the reason for that is it's an executive branch function and the president is the leader of the executive branch, obviously. let's go to -- go ahead, helen.
2:56 pm
follow-up. caller: the president is the person that has been saying that the f.b.i. does this and they're fake, this, that and the other. are we sure we're going to get some answers? i have the sense enough to know that trump will probably take paperwork out the file. host: all right. let's hear from homestead, florida, and ogie, go ahead, on the line, democrats' line. yep. caller: yes. yeah. what i like to say, because i'm from haiti. what i like to say about this, like democrat and republican d [indiscernible] yes, [indiscernible] something like just drop it in the hole.
2:57 pm
[indiscernible] host: we continue to take your calls, your comments on the senate judiciary committee today. their long meeting today delayed for a little bit. may have seen on camera members speaking to each other and the underlying reason for that becoming clear later on as jeff flake voting to refer the nomination, to approve the nomination, to advance it to the floor with the caveat he wants a one-week investigation, a delay in the final vote for a week. here's the reaction from joe manchin, the democratic senator from west virginia, his statement. his tweet here sending out his statement. i applaud senator flake's decision to rise above the partisan circus on display during this entire process. it's what's right and fair for dr. ford, judge kavanaugh and the american people. senate is in session this afternoon. the house is done for the day. in fact, the house is done for october. we won't see the house again until after the mid term
2:58 pm
elections now just over a month away. texas and george, republican line, welcome. caller: yes. first thing i'd like to say is joe manchin, he will say anything because i used to be in west virginia. i grew up in west virginia. his dad and his grandfather all was crooks and he's a crook too. he'd say one thing and do another. one another thing, flake is a turncoat. and then ford says she didn't like to fly. she was going to drive. now what did she do? she flew out there. she's a liar too. that's all i got to say. host: in east point, michigan, our independent line. this is darrell. caller: hi. good afternoon. host: good afternoon. caller: i want to go back to the elephant in the room. the elephant in the room is the battle between pro-life and
2:59 pm
pro-choice factions in america, both are equally passionate. if you think that this committee meeting in the senate is going to last only seven days, america has to be very naive. this is the first time in 45 years with kavanaugh chosen, e vs. wade may get reviewed, overturned and abortion goes back to the state. i hope for one thing and one thing only. the next 45 years will bring down to 30 million abortions instead of just 60 million which we have had in the united states since 1973. host: president trump is in washington today meeting this afternoon with the chilean president at the white house. during that meeting, at least the part open to reporters, he was asked about the developing story in the judiciary committee and their vote to move the nomination forward. here's the president.
3:00 pm
>> mr. president, your comment on the delay from senator flake, he wants a one-week delay so the f.b.i. can investigate further? president trump: well, i'll let the senate handle that. they've been doing their good job and very professional. i'm just hearing a little bit about it because i've been at the president of chile and we are talking about some very important subjects, but i'm sure it will all be very good. i guess the vote was a positive vote but there seems to be a delay. i'll learn more about it as the day goes on and i just learned about it because we were ogether. >> what did you think about ford's testimony? >> i thought her testimony was compelling, she looks like a very fine woman to me. i thought brett's testimony likewise was something i haven't seen before. it was incredible. it was an incredible moment i think in the history of our
3:01 pm
country. certainly she was a very credible witness. she was very good in many respects and i think that -- i don't know if this is going to continue onward, if we're going to get a vote, but again i'm here, so i'm not out there watching because i can't be. out of great respect. maybe we'll go watch together. but i think it will work out very well for the country. i just want it to work out well for the country. if that happens i'm happy. >> [inaudible] >> not even a little bit. >> senators mur -- do you have a message for senators mruczkowski and collins? >> i have no message, they have to do what they think is right. they have to be comfortable with themselves and i'm sure that's what they are. >> are you willing to reopen the
3:02 pm
background investigation into kavanaugh? >> i'll rely on all the people including senator grassley who is doing a very good job. that's a decision they're going to make. i suspect they'll be making some decision soon whether it's to take a vote or to do whatever else they want to do. i will be totally reliant on what senator grass lee and the group decides to dfment host: the president this afternoon at the white house, he heads to west virginia saturday for a rally there. joe manchin, the democratic senator from west virginia, saying this afternoon he supports jeff flake's efforts to delay the vote in the senate far week for an investigation. let's hear from sherry in memphis, democrats' line. caller: the name is shirley. the i was -- in 1951-1952, winter, fall and winter, i had a date with a football captain, i was very flattered to be going out with him.
3:03 pm
and he, um, held many positions on different organizations within the school. he was referred to as the big man on campus in those days. i had no reason to have any fear of him. we were going on a double date. we got in the car he -- we got into the back seat and he immediately started to accost me. was holding me back. i was only 5'4", about 112 pounds, he was probably 160 pounds, 5'8", 5'9". and a jock. and the only reason that i was saved from rape, i was begging and screaming, the young man that was driving whom i didn't know because he was a junior high friend of this guy i was going to high school with, he turned around and drove back to
3:04 pm
my parents' home and let me out. his conscience kicked in, he obviously had thought that this an had -- this boy had led him to believe that i was an easy girl or a bad girl or whatever you want to call it and they both could have a good time. it's very similar to what appened to dr. ford. that was high school in memphis. host: obviously you remember it pretty vividly. how long did it take you to really get over it, or have you? >> you don't get over it yusm just live with it. it's there forever. i'm 84 years old. it has never left my mind, my heart. and i didn't talk to anybody except one girl and told her, i didn't tell my parents, i was terrified that i wouldn't be believed. it's always, you know, the bad
3:05 pm
girl. host: remind us again how old you were? >> i was either 15 or 16, my birthday was in september and it was the fall, summer season and it was a cool night. remember that. i remember what i had on. it's just vivid in my mind and hen he picked me up my parents waited to meet him. he had called me and said he was going to be late. and i think that was a ploy that no parents would be there. and -- but my parents stayed until they came. they called and apologized to the people they were going to play cards with and said they were going to be late. anyway they met him. as we backed out of the driveway i could see my parents going into the garage to go to their
3:06 pm
destination. and the boy driving in the front seat -- that was something that stood out in my mind. we always if it was a double date the -- when the first girl was picked up you'd sit in the front seat all three of you and -- but i started for the front door and frank said no, let's get in the back, we won't have to change. it was real strange. it just struck me as odd. and -- but anyway. we weren't -- we had just gotten into the street. he put his left arm, i was on the left side and he put his left arm under my chin and grabbed my arm with his -- my left arm with his left arm and then he started with his hands up my skirt, we didn't wear long
3:07 pm
pants in those days, it was a tight skirt i was kicking, i was -- i felt like i could hear myself scream bug that nobody else could because his arm was under my chin pressing against my throat and the young man in front started up and i was kicking against the back of the seat and we drove up toward the major street where he was going to turn and this kid in front had a change of heart and he pulled in a driveway and turned around and took me back and i got out out in the street and they drove off and i went in, my parents as i said, had left. and i took a bath and got in bed nd they came home at 10:30 because my curfew was 11:00 and they always wanted to be there when i got home and --
3:08 pm
host: you couldn't tell them what happened? caller: oh, god, no. i couldn't tell my daddy -- it -- and it would have broken my mother's heart. the next day i went to a girlfriend's house and i told her and she and i -- we cried all day, tried to figure out what to do and we just kept it between us and i never told anybody else until i married my husband before we married i told him and that was 45 years ago. host: congratulationsen your long marriage, shirley. 41well, now, he died, we had years. and i don't know if i'd be calling if he was alive, i wouldn't want to stress him with this. host: i know it's hard for you to call, it's hard to hear but thank you for calling in and
3:09 pm
sharing and -- caller: may i -- the reason i wanted to relate this is i heard two or three times throughout the process of this that surely they get over it eventually. surely it must go away, how long can you remember something like that? you remember it for a lifetime. i'm 84. what is that 67 years ago? host: shirley in memphis, tennessee. thank you very much. the senate is in session this hour and we want to take you live over there. it's every -- over there now. we'll get back to your calls momentarily. on the floor is judiciary committee member mazie hirono of florida. had already received a proper judicial bypass from a texas judge that allowed her to make her own decisions, so that was -- had nothing to do with having to require >> it had nothing to do with parental consent, she had
3:10 pm
overcome that. that wasn't good enough for judge kavanaugh. present in the case. this is just one example of his outcome-driven approach to important cases before him. at the hearing, i also asked him about the pattern that was revealed in his numerous dissents. in several of those cases, his own colleagues called him out for misrepresenting the facts and the law. just last year, in ?aidz v. anthem, the majority said judge kavanaugh, quote, applies the law as he wishes it to be, as he wishes it were, not as it currently is, end quote. and in a 2008 case, agri process or v.nlrb the majority wrote, quote, meaning judge kavanaugh's dissent, creates its own rule. instead of following supreme court rules, they said judge kavanaugh's dissent abandons the
3:11 pm
text of the applicable laws all together. it's pretty telling when your own colleagues on the court feel so strongly about your dissent that they will actually call him out on it. when this nomination first came to the senate, i was skeptical. i said that if the president's nominee to the supreme court is anything like the nominees he has been sending to the lower federal court, i expect we will see a nominee handpicked by the federalist society and the heritage foundation intent on carrying out their right-wing ideology supported by the president. it turned out to be much worse than i imagined. not only was the nominee someone who fit that description, it became clear that he was someone who lacked candor, credibility, and character. this has been displayed at every turn. after hearing from dr. ford and
3:12 pm
brett kavanaugh and yesterday the editors of "america" magazine, a well-respected jesuit weekly withdrew -- they originally endorsed judge kavanaugh. this group withdrew its endorsement of judge kavanaugh. they said, quote, while we previously endorsed the nomination of judge kavanaugh on the basis of his legal credentials and his reputations as a committed technicallualist, it is now clear that the nomination should be withdrawn. if senate republicans proceed with this nomination, they will host: that's mazie hirono of l hawaii, over on the senate floor. live coverage continues on c-span 2. the senate it appears won't be in session this weekend, we thought they would be moving the nomination forward. the nomination was approved out of committee 11-10. but that vote of jeff flake, the republican from arizona, came with the caveat calling for an extension of one week for an
3:13 pm
investigation, f.b.i. investigation into the allegations of christine blasey ford. so it looks like that vote will be postponed. we haven't heard officially from the majority leader. n that, we hear from a tweet from barren lopez. we saw some back and forth with members. he said i want to get some democrats to agree and come out and say we would accept this and we'd say the process is fair at least even if they're not going to vote for it. let's get back to your calls. 202-748-8900. republicans, 202-74 -8921. or all others, 202-748-8922. next keith in evansville, indiana, republican line. caller: how are you today? host: doing fine, sir, go ahead.
3:14 pm
caller: i don't for one minute believe the lady's testimony, i never seen one tear. and another thing, i do believe with all my heart that this is nothing but a clinton resistance to resist anything and everything that the republican party is trying to get done and if you want to get something done, i've been sitting back waiting on this. when is bill clinton going to jail for getting on that airplane? put all this stuff up there so that you'll never get to hillary and bill and i really believe that in my heart. now i'm not saying that it couldn't happen, i don't believe it happened. but i'm tell you whenever you go back and start making accusations from stuff that is 35, 40 years ago, she was probably drinking alcohol that night too. maybe she's confused. host: you dent believe anything
3:15 pm
that christine blasey ford said in her opening statement or testimony? caller: i don't. i sure dent. i do not believe it one bit. i believe -- i never seen a tear come out of her. mr. kavanaugh was totally upwhich i would be the same way. but i do believe that this just a resistance from the clinton resist, resist, resist. they're going to cause this country to have a civil war for one lady and one man. that's what i believe. host: we'll go to our democrats line next, debra inwood, kentucky. caller: hi, yes. i would say i'm a democrat but i'm going to be truthful with you. i may change totally because of the way are now. it is sickening. look, i was in the same situation with that lady. i understand the 84-year-old. but let me tell you something. hers was a different setup, mine wasn't. let me tell you, it is wrong. we need to pull together. there's a christian song that
3:16 pm
says we all believe the same. now everybody thinks trump is so bad and he's doing this. let me explain a little bit, because i'm a democrat, when obama was in, my husband lost all of his profit share. now, when the obama -- the obamacare insurance came in, guess what? we were lied to. i had to have surgery, $5,000. now another thing. diane feinstein, she 45d that letter for what, of days, isn't a crime? that should be a crime. ok let's see. what about that -- oh cory booker groping a lady. oh my god isn't that a crime? people, wake up. we are going to socialism if you don't. now another thing, there is another democrat up there and it really burn misbutt because i work for the party -- worked for the party for 15 years. 15 years.
3:17 pm
and it's gone totally crazy. let me give you a good example. the guy was talking about clinton my mother pass aid way in 1987. in 1993, i got a card thanking me for my mother voting for clinton. and i called it up in the party and asked them and they said keep my mouth shut. now how crooked is that? come on people, this is america. this democrats and that jeff flake, all they want to do is take us down. it's time we stand up and if we don't like the way these people are, get them out. we don't need them. host: here's reaction across the country from news organizations, newspapers in various states. arizona editorial view. our view, kavanaugh has shown he doesn't belong on the supreme court. from the anchorage daily news, mruczkowski joins flake in calling for f.b.i. investigation of sexual assault allegation. maine, the "portland gaseth
3:18 pm
-- g.o.p. advances kavanaugh nomination as flake calls for f.b.i. investigation. now to arizona. arizona is senator jeff flake to force f.b.i. investigation into allegations on brett kavanaugh. some of the reporting at this hour. as jeff flake casts a vote in favor of refering the noom nation out of committee to the full senate floor. let's go to connecticut on the independent line. lin, hello there. caller: hi, how are you? host: good. caller: i'm a registered independent. however, i have to condemn what's going on. i haven't seen anything like what the democrats are doing to our country. it's been so divided since president obama was in the office. what they're doing today, what they're doing to this poor judge kavanaugh is just sickening.
3:19 pm
he is -- he's been on the appellate, i think he's on the appellate court of appeals in washington. for 12 years. nothing has ever come up against this judge. nothing except for when the democrats feel threat and they pull out all the stops, they fight dirty, they try and find everything, anything they can. i'm not saying that i don't believe the doctor from california. i believe something did happen to her. in her lifetime. and i do believe that some people are assaulted. but she is mistaken. it is mistaken identity. this is a good man. he has been -- lived an exemplary life. since he's taken a life of serving our country. all the democrats want to do is tear it down. they want to tear down president trump and all the good things he's doing. and anyone that he appoints they
3:20 pm
will turn -- they will tear them down and put them through such mud throwing. it's disgusting that this poor judge kavanaugh's family has to go through this. that his two daughters have to go through this. the youngest daughter for her to say, can we pray for that lady? that is true christian through and through. we try to see the good in everyone. host: there's news this afternoon on the now likely investigation, additional investigation from the f.b.i. in the coming week. if all things play out the way some senators are hoping, including jeff flake, this is from the associated press, their breaking news, kavanaugh friend mark judge says he'll cooperate with any law enforcement agency that investigates, quote, confidentially. kathleen is next in new york on the democrats line. caller: hello?
3:21 pm
host: hi, you're on the air. caller: thank you for taking my call. i just wanted to say that i'm conservative and i will say right up front i would like to believe judge kavanaugh. i start with that bias. and i think that's the beginning of thinking clearly and critically. so that you can put aside your biases. on both sides of this it's become so heated it seems like critical think, clarity, has gone right out the window. now i would like to see judge kavanaugh put on the supreme court, i believe his testimony was true , he sounds like a very good man, has a good family, very strong background, a lot of people that support him. that have known him far long time. including a lot of women. then you have an allegation where somebody also comes forward and sundays credible. so if i want to believe
3:22 pm
kavanaugh, then i want to believe him 100%. and i'm wondering if that's even possible with the way the process is today. when this lady came forward, she did go to her representative even before kavanaugh was nominated for the supreme court. and it seems that the process was in place but it wasn't followed. she didn't go to a republican or independent. she went to democrats if i recall correctly. i heard her say that the other night. so my question is, the process is very brecken here. why wasn't this very important factor considered at that very important time even before mr. kavanaugh was nominated to the court. from my understanding, there are multiple ways to keep her privacy, respect -- keep her privacy respected, keep mr. kavanaugh's privacy respected
3:23 pm
and do investigations and find out if they still wanted to nominate this person to the supreme court. and then again, as other people have said, when it finally did , i to senator feinstein can't imagine what reason she didn't find a way to look into this, to share it with the committee and also to keep ms. ford's privacy. all these things were possible. highway kathleen let me ask you something. you identify as a democrat, you said you're conservative. do you feel out of sync with you're party not only on this ssue but other issues? caller: let me clarify, i'm a republican. i got the wrong number. i told them when i called in. host: that's ok, appreciate your call. we go to our republican line, kingsport, tennessee. this is j.d., go ahead.
3:24 pm
make sure you mute your television and go ahead with your comment. caller: yes. yes, sir, i have and first of all, we don't have a democrat party anymore. it's -- they've gone away from it. they're liberals. democrats used to work for our nation. the people -- we left them all to go up there to work for the people and they're not doing that now. both sides, not just the democrat bus they gone away from being democrats. they don't try to help our country. they try to go against everything that's going and up to president trump went in, we've been going down, down, down for the last eight years. when we need to go up. and they say they'll help the president when he's elected and everything. i haven't seen a thing they've done to help him. and i've got -- to i could sit and talk to you for a long i'm on different things on my opinion but the number one thing
3:25 pm

says an accord has been reachedful statement to be issued. again, where things stand is the judiciary committee has approved the nomination, advanced the nomination, jeff flake voting in favor but saying he supports the nomination, getting a week delayen the senate floor vote so the f.b.i. can investigate. we'll get a couple more calls here and go next to greenwood, indiana. adam on our democrats line. caller: thanks for take my call here. i was watching pretty intently today. seemed like at the end when jeff flake said i'm willing to go ahead with the f.b.i. investigation limited in scope, that the f.b.i. doesn't really investigate state crimes especially 36-year-old state crimes. if you're going to limit the scope of the investigation i don't expect they'll find anything. it seems almost a copout to me. they can come back and say, they found nothing, there's no corroborating witnesses, move ahead, seems like a copout for
