republican senators did in support of kavanaugh even though he's issued a statement supporting kavanaugh. as the vote was approaching there was whispering going on behind the deus. it was clear something was afoot. that is when word started to leak that in fact flake was having second thoughts and he wanted -- he was willing to vote no if the chairman, chuck grassley, did not agree to postpone the ultimate floor vote and support a request for supplemental fbi investigations into some of these allegations that the committee members heard in riveting detail thursday when christine glossy forward talked ordut -- christine blasey f talked about a sexual assault attempt by kavanaugh when they were in high school and capital's angry not --

kavanaugh's angry denials. >> there was talk of a possible weekend session to move forward with the nomination. they are not going to be meeting until monday. what happened? >> the ultimate vote will be postponed beyond next week. what they have asked for and agreed to is a supplemental fbi investigation supplemental to the background check and have already done. the investigation would talk to ford saysses that were present at this high school party 36 years ago. the soonest capital will come to the floor is the following week. there really was no reason for mcconnell to russia through. yes, he did on friday evening proceednsensus to to the calendar. democrats were fine with agreeing to that because we are

now looking at a tuesday vote. we are looking at a vote on the following tuesday depending on what the fbi comes up with. >> senator jeff flake asking for the investigation. they could take no more than a week. there were questions as to have president trump would call for the investigation, whether the senate or a senator could call for that. in the end president trump said yes. how did that come about? >> grassley was very adamant congress does not have power to direct the fbi in what to do. he>> argued these background checks are courtesy that the white house provides to the nominee. help vet the it is up to the white house. trump requested the supplemental investigation. it is only a week. it will not push the nominee beyond the election if the fbi

comes back and find there is nothing to report. also, when the fbi looked into india hill's halep -- anita theys allegations in 1991, could not any corroboration for the charges. in retrospect people wondered how hard it looked, like an fbi investigation could potentially help the nominee. the bottom line is it was clear to everyone that without an additional investigation that flick in the other swing republicans, lisa murkowski and susan collins, they would vote no. he had to agree to it. since it is only a week long extension of the background check it was not such a huge concession. >> he talked about senate procedure. what happens from here on out in terms of getting to that confirmation vote? >> as leader mcconnell
