d.c. thes wonderful to see breakdown of those stereotypes. even among my own people, community, i was stereotyped and rejected. anthink all of puerto rico s, whether on the island or the states, we see a common cause and we see ourselves as one common people. steve: congressman, thank you for your time. rep. gutierrez: thank you so much. >> alex bolton is a senior staff writer with the hill and he joins us. alex, recount for us today what happened in the senate committee meeting just briefly. alex: well, it seemed to be headed toward a normal confirmation vote, which would have sent brett kavanaugh to the floor for confirmation on tuesday, but then everything changed when jeff flake disappeared from the committee room.
11:08 pm
he was gone. he did not speak as the other republican senators did in support of kavanaugh, even though he had issued a statement in support of kavanaugh. then as the vote was approaching, there was all this was during going on beyond the dais and it was clear that something was afoot. that is when the word started to leak that in fact, flake was a having second thoughts and he was willing to vote know if chairman chuck grassley did not agree to postpone the ultimate floor vote and support a request for supplemental fbi investigation into some of these allegations that the committee members heard in riveting detail thursday, when christine blasey ford talked about what she says was a sexual assault attempt by judge kavanaugh when they were in high school. kavanaugh as you know had very angry denials.
11:09 pm
>> we thought the senate would be in for a possible weekend session to move forward still with the nomination. what happened? they will not be meeting now until monday? alex: well, because the open vote on kavanaugh is going to be postponed beyond next week, what they have asked for or a green too, is a supplemental fbi investigation, supplemental to the background check they have already done. it would talk to the witnesses that ford says was were present at this high school party, 36 years ago. so the soonest kavanaugh will come to the floor is going to be the following week. so there really was no reason for mitch mcconnell to rush it through. yes, he did on friday evening, get a consent to proceed to the executive calendar so brett kavanaugh could come up more
11:10 pm
quickly, but the democrats were fine with agreeing to that, because, we are not looking at a vote on tuesday, we are looking at the vote the following tuesday, if even that soon, depending on what the fbi comes up with. >> there was some question as to whether president trump would call for that investigation or whether the senate or the senators themselves good, but in the end, the president said yes. how did all that come about? alex: grassley, the chairman, was very adamant that congress does not have the power to direct the fbi on what to do and he argued that these background checks are courtesies that the white house provides to the senate to help that the nominees.
11:11 pm
so it is really up to the white house. trump went ahead and he has requested the supplemental investigation. it is only one week, so it will not push the nominee beyond the election if the fbi comes back and finds there is nothing to report. also, when the fbi looked into a newest allegations against hill's allegations against clarence thomas in a 1991, they were not able to find any foundation or corroboration for those charges. in retrospect, people wondered just how hard he looked, but the investigation could potentially help the nominee and the bottom line is, it was clear to everyone that without an additional investigation from the fbi, that jeff flake and the other 2 swing republicans, lisa murkowski of alaska and susan collins of maine, were going to vote no. so he had to agree to it. it is only a week long extension of the background check. >> we talked a little bit about senate procedure. can you lay out what happens from here on out in terms of getting the confirmation vote?
11:12 pm
alex: as leader mcconnell just announced, all 51 republican senators support the motion to proceed to the executive calendar, that is a preliminary step that has to happen before there is a closure vote, a vote to end the debate on the nominee and then, a final vote to confirm the nominee. it is a very preliminary hurdle. every republican agreed to it as part of this deal. and the democrats were fine with going along with it. because they don't want to come in on saturday to work either. host: [laughter] alex, thank you so much. we will be watching for your tweets on the weekend @alexandermoulton. thank you for joining us. alex: thank you for having me. talks aboutntosh what the super pac is doing in
