2:59 pm
>> we want better jobs and better pay and we will look at different ways to get there. nancy pelosi said she was calling on the trump administration to with draw their support for the texas lawsuit against the affordable care act. join her in i would that. >> your republican counterparts? mr. schumer: they say one thing, that they want to keep pre-existing conditions. on the other hand, they support a lawsuit that would get rid of them. either come clean and admit you won't protect pre-existing conditions or drop the lawsuit. onwhat are your views working with new republican senators? mr. schumer: i will work with anyone i can to move the country forward but we are not going to sacrifice our principles for that. thank you everybody.
3:00 pm
that's it. host: senate minority leader chuck schumer addressing the breaking news that jeff sessions has resigned as attorney general, the new tweet coming "we are pleased to announce that matthew what are, chief attorney general jeff sessions at the department , will become our new attorney general of the united states." let me click back and get back to what the president had to say here. monitorin hold on. wishes jefft's iv sessions well, but jeff sessions has resigned as attorney general. a letter to the president from the outgoing attorney general's "dear mr. president, at your submitting my resignation.
3:01 pm
i came to work at the department justice everyday determined to do my duty and serve my country. i have done so to the best of my ability, working to protect the principles of justice that are the foundation of justice." you for thenk opportunity, mr. president." we have breaking news the day after the. 2018 midterm elections. we have coverage continuing throughout the afternoon and evening getting your reactions. let's update you on the balance the senate. republicans regaining control with 51 seats, 46 democrats. independents caucusing for the very in challengingk scott bill nelson for his seat. right now, rick scott is leading by not enough. automatic recount has been
3:02 pm
triggered. you heard from minority leader chuck schumer that 100,000 votes or so have not been counted, so that race is not over. going to arizona where you had two congresswoman challenging each other for that open seat in by jeff flake, martha mcsally with a lead over sinema there. there is also the special election in mississippi. that race is not been called. this is to permanently replace senator thad cochran, who retired last year. incumbent senator cindy hyde-smith was appointed to the seat. she has a narrow lead over espy andmight juske another republican, chris mcdaniel.
3:03 pm
newport, florida, a democrat, robert, good afternoon to you. caller: hi. i would like to make a comment on the president's performance. my view is he is a despicable person who does damage to the presidency of the united states, believe thele that lies that come out of his mouth, i am sorry, but that is the only way to describe it, everything is he is the best, everything he touches is the best, i mean, it is just -- you cannot normalize a president that talks like a four-year-old. i mean, it is despicable. as far as the jeff sessions thing goes, they had this all plan. i have no doubt in my mind they had this all planned, and i hope
3:04 pm
the democrats just destroy them. that is about all i had to say. thank you. greta: bernard in new york. a republican. so much to respond to this afternoon. the president's news conference, the news conference by the democratic leader, and of course the election results. go ahead, bernard. caller: thank you. of your last callers, seven were left-wingers, and you gave them plenty of time. i would appreciate the same courtesy. greta: ok. caller: thank you so much. i would like to explain liberalism and jim acosta. are two opinions. cnn put out their statement, but one of the top news people at fox news said it was shameless what general austin -- what jim acosta did. i will explain why it is
3:05 pm
shameless. most networks, 90%, or left wing. they are a capable of telling the truth because they believe the lie is the truth. it comes from you ballistic narcissism, which acosta has big-time. jim acosta did not ask the president a question. accused the president of the united states of being a liar simply based on an assertion or analysis of what happened with the taliban. the police that these are nice do bettering to promote homeland security backs up president, because at least 3000 of them are under of beingon -- suspicion of being terrorists, gang bangers, and so
3:06 pm
on. that becauseieves he believes something, that is the absolute truth, and anybody that disagrees with that is a liar. that comes from a sickness, a psychological sickness, ok? this happens throughout the networks. now, cnn's without a statement attack onresident's the first amendment and freedom of the press, we will not put up with it, we will continue to tell the truth -- which is a lie. they lied twice in their statement. the first amendment does not guarantee, freedom of press does not mean you can live through your teeth, and when someone calls you on the line, you say oh, you are against freedom of the press. secondly, when the woman got up and accused the president, "these divisive words
3:07 pm
that you use regarding black forth," so on and so the president said she is using racist remarks. she was. there is no evidence that the president of the united states n any way, shape, or form, and his record on israel, his record with employment on black people, and his long-term friendship with many black leaders show again her opinion that he is a racist does not make him a racist. and is what liberalism is, liberalism -- they engage in sophistry -- in orwellian sophistry. for those two words together, and you understand liberalism. thank you very greta: ok. michelle. meler: thank you for letting
3:08 pm
talk. someone was talking about how our news got so one-sided. i want to point out and have everybody go back and read about what used to be the fairness doctrine, where news had to be fair and balanced in the community, the including devoting airtime to opposing point of view. thosem to have forgotten roles. somebody called earlier about how obama did not get anything done in his eight years, and somebody called after that of and asked for, people to maybe reach out to senator mcconnell and asked why when they were not filibustering why they would not call for votes. if i were correctly, the adamant that we would add yet another $1 trillion to the deficit only get in the beginning years of trump, we have the deficit changed 17%.
3:09 pm
i agree with mr. chester, who was just on. we need transparency both in policy as well as in finances. greta: michelle, what about the raises in your state, the former senator winning the gubernatorial seat over richard cordray, and sherrod brown going on to serve another term. what is your reaction to those races? caller: i am honestly very ans, ppointed in my ohio not that i have anything against , he is a very nice man, but the entire state is going toward a doctrine that is very anti-women's health, and that is a scary thing to happen in my lifetime. michelle, what were some of the issues that motivated you to vote yesterday?
3:10 pm
caller: everything that is going on in women's health, everything from the human health and services to the teen pregnancy program reductions to putting judges on all of the course that will try to overturn roe v. wade, and how they will stretch that overturn it to not only antiabortion but anti-women's health and anti-contraceptive and anti-sexual education. greta: ok. mary is in orangeburg, south carolina, a democrat. hi, mary. caller: hi, greta. i wanted to give a comment to the young man on earlier from florida telling the truth about how the senators mistreated obama with the filibusters. lot ofs like a republicans forgot about how he went out and campaigned on trying to get out, the country
3:11 pm
rebuilt, trying to get that rebuilt and was campaigning. he could get nothing done once he lost the senate and the house. it seems like it is a one-sided thing. or something. i do not know. saying that trump is raises, what is it when he says black people are too stupid to vote for him? president obama put out a statement after the results came in congratulating all that showed up, and noted the ofocrats taking control the house and several state governorships as well. i am hopefully going
3:12 pm
a returne will begin to validating public life, honesty, decency, compromising, standing up for one another by americans, not separated by our differences but bound together by one common creed." joyce in florida, a democrat, hi, joyce. are you?i, how greta: fine, joyce. you are on the air. how did you vote yesterday? caller: democrat, straight down the line democrat. greta: and why? i am alwaysuse democrat since i registered democrat. i have two comments. whether republican or democrat i say let them run and whoever side wins, we should always remember that we are americans, whether democrat or
3:13 pm
republican. we are all american. one, going to go vote, you cannot get the party to go win. we have 10 nationalized democrats,10 born they are whining about the void, yet they become naturalized in the country of america, yet they cannot get to the poll and vote. all right, let's go to peter in wesley chapel, florida, a republican. hi, peter. caller: i want to make a couple of comments. first of all, i appreciate c-span. as a retiree, i spent too much
3:14 pm
time watching it. greta: [laughs] sawer: number two, i just chuck schumer, and he said he was happy to have more pickups in the house, and that he was going to work -- i do not know if he used the word "work," attorney used -- he is going to keep a check on the president. i hear that as code for "we will we can," as we have done in the past, the democrats, to resist, to create oc, moving theing country forward, in other words, they will move toward impeachment. trump has done something towards north korea that no one else has done, even obama. by the way, i did not vote for obama, but i did respect the man.
3:15 pm
he was articulate. i wish the democrats would courtesy to isame didn't vote for desantis here in florida. he is a great person. c-span3u, se .reta greta: all right, let's go togreta: ken. how did you vote? i actually voted for brian kemp, and i spread myself around. i am a retired air force guy, so i tend to vote for the air force base, which is host to the area. the point i want to hit on here is the fat that they kept the polls open someplace. generous period of
3:16 pm
early voting here in georgia, close to three weeks of early voting, and yet we still made it to a situation where we have people who could vote because it was so late in the evening and they were standing in line. there were some issues with broken voting machines, and i understand that is a situation where you keep the polls open, but if you are just late and standing in line, i do not understand why he would keep the polls open for that. i will lead you to comment on that. greta: let me give you an update on the georgia governors race. abrams, brian kemp with 50%, 65,000 votes separate the two, and you know brian kemp is leading there, but this is one that has not been called yet. if brian kemp's percentage goes below 50%, they are headed to a later inhich would be november, so that is one to keep an eye on later today as well. carol and washington, d.c., a
3:17 pm
democrat. caller: i want to know if we trump supporters, do they consider him lining when he opens his mouth? he is very divisive. he is not a good person. he the press conference. it was chaotic enough o becausef him. i think he is worse than the north korean leader. at least we know what he will to come of north korean leader, but trump, i think he will do anything to run our country. if you missed any part of it, we will show this news conference in its entirety in just a moment. first, we will hear from andre in deerfield beach, florida, republican. caller: hi, greta. you are very attentive, and i appreciate it. you are a saint. , itver, this divisiveness is like the devil, unless he is recognized, he does not exist, so all of the talk about trumps
3:18 pm
divisiveness, put into the site, look at the work. all of the top schumer was talking about coming now they have control, all of these victories, yet he was talking about, he made a comment that said "what are you smoking?" what is that to say. what are you talking about, cigarettes, schumer, because you come from new york, and you still support big tobacco? from all of that, the rhetoric needs to stop. the motion needs to happen. obama came -- greta: what do you mean "the motion needs to happen"? caller: the boots need to hit the ground. greta: voters? caller: and the work needs to get done, so enough of the back and forth. his press in conference he is willing to compromise, he said he think
3:19 pm
great things will get done because the house is run by democrats, if they are willing to put the boots to the ground and work. let's do something. let's do something together. he talked about immigration. it is not fixed immigration until they fix the first problem of immigration, which, african-americans, i did not vote because i could not vote. as a nonviolent felons in the state of florida, i am denied my voting rights. 53-year-old electrician in the state of florida is not allowed to vote. greta: that was on the ballot. caller: the average electrician across the country is 50 years old. so who are the people that we have in the schools today that are in the vocational programs that are going to fill that need, that we are going to have in our infrastructure? we're going to need electricians to repair and upgrade and bring this connectivity to rural and
3:20 pm
suburban and urban areas that, because of the onset of telemedicine, they are needed. now it is the health care providers that are going to be pushing for these things. ieta: all right, andre, believe in there, deerfield beach, florida, a republican. we will be taking more of your calls as our coverage of campaign 2018 continues. president trump was asked at his news conference about any changes to his cabinet. he did not at the time talk about anyone specifically leaving. he said there would be changes, and then after that his conference, it was announced that the attorney general, jeff sessions, was resigning. a letter to the president from the outgoing attorney general, "at your request, i am submitting my resignation." then tweeted
3:21 pm
out "we are pleased to announce er, chief of whitak staff to attorney general jeff sessions at the department of justice, will become the new acting attorney general. we thank attorney general jeff sessions for his service and wish them well." votedlion people yesterday. keep it here to continue to get your reactions to it. right now, we will go back to the president's news conference, about 90 minutes long, our coverage here on c-span. >> ladies and gentlemen, the president of the united states, accompanied by the vice
