capitol hill news conference. >> thank you for being here. i want to introduce the new republican leadership team. number one goal is to keep america moving forward. we serve in a divided government and country. our goal is to unite us again.

our second go into me make sure that we win the majority back. we know the challenge of a we are working on. we wanted to hit the ground running. we know the democrats have a plan. , try tot to disrupt whatch, to stall achievements we have been able to move forward. we know america is too great for such a small vision. we will work through every state. we know we have our challenges to win back in the suburban areas. we will do just that. america is and will always be the strongest nation on the face of the. i want to introduce our newest member of the leadership team, miss cheney. here andn honor to be to serve with this team. i look forward to being a conference chair for the house

republicans. we have a lot of work ahead of us. we have the right policies. the policies we put in place in the last congress have created the economic growth and nasa security -- national security we need. we will take a back seat to no one. doing what's to right from america's women, minorities, making sure that everybody understands the policies we put in place are the ones that people care deeply about. as a mother of five, i'm honored to serve. i look forward to getting to work. we will take back that majority. it's my honor to introduce our new minority whip mr. steve scalise. >> thank you. congratulations to you. it is truly an honor to be elected as a republican whip. it's the job i've enjoyed for the last four years. travel around the

country in a lot of swing districts. people love the fact that we have a booming economy. they see how tremendous this success has been for hard-working families. they are seeing more money in their paychecks. history was working against us in the house. it caught up to us. we need to redouble our efforts. one of the things we need to do with the new republican minority , as we work to earn that majority back, do a better job at letting people know what we stand for. those conservative principles that have been proven to work, to get our economy back on track. to help those hard-working families are -- were counting on us. they want to see this economy to continue to grow. and a lot of those swing districts, you never heard those c candidates talking about impeachment. they talked about being pro-life and program. it will be interesting to see if they keep their words to their voters. the people of this country don't

want an obstructive congress. they want people to work together for the common good. to keep this great economic success going. working with a president who has been focused on getting this country back on track. as we constitute this new leadership team, will be focused on our efforts to earn the trust of the american people. to let people know why these conservative principles are so important. secure a safe and america, to get the majority back in two years. thank you mr. leader. it's a privilege to be elected by my peers to vice chair. our goal in working with liz is to continue to build bridges and develop relationships into new places and communities.

>> it is a great honor to be part of this team with the leadership of mr. mccarthy. it's important to look at the other leadership team. the team right here, average age of us is 52 years old. the average age of the top three leading candidates on the other side is 78 years old. we are all about new ideas. we are about moving this country forward and new progress. i'm happy to be a part of this team. i'm really appreciate the opportunity to serve the american people in this capacity. is a teamee behind me that will restore hope for americans. i believe that our policies and the ideas that we bring to the table are what's good for the country and the american people. , think it's going to be good not only for our economy but for our future. i'm very excited about the opportunity to be a part of this. we will get the majority back.

we understand we have a divided government. we have a divided nation. our goal is to unite us. this is an opportunity to help come -- americans move forward. our unemployment is at one of its lowest point it's ever been. were proud of the changes we made to the v.a.. the largestilitary race they ever had in nine years. were proud of the fact we are combating opioids, ending online human trafficking. our work is not done. we will work with anybody across the isle of they are there to work american -- to move america forward. istheir agenda investigation, impeachment, not focused on the hard-working american public, we will be there to defend the american public. we know this is not an easy time. there's an opportunity.

i hope you see by as having a leadership election now, this conference is united. it's healthy to have a debate. i want to thank jim jordan for running. we came into this congress together. was one of the smallest republican classes in the history of congress. the resulting 13 of us. many believed we could not move america in the right direction. in four years we were able to do that. we did not win the majority but we left america a little stronger. the discretionary spending that congress had control over, $13 billion less today than the last time nancy pelosi was speaker. you look at the cvo numbers, we saved more than toward -- $4 trillion for the american public. we will continue to strive to make america more effective, efficient and more countable. i will take a few questions. >> [inaudible] >> history is against us.

do you think any president in their first off year election loses more than 30 seats? morocco, lost 63. anybody in that office, the history runs against them. michael bloomberg spent more than $100 million. he was very effective in defeating a lot of republican women. you look what he did in california. something changed, history did not waste -- always shake out. since 1992, anybody who retired , 0-23.eat young kim, the first south korean elected to congress, is winning in california. all of his money didn't defeat all of the republicans. we know we have work cut out for us. we know history worked against us. we have challenges in suburban

areas and we will work harder to bring that back. >> [inaudible] >> is not a question for me. that's a question for her conference. memberse a number of inside the conference that pledge they would not vote for her. i think that, only time will tell. you cannot just resist. i raise the point about unemployment. years,last 49 unemployment has only been under 4% 11 months. democrat voted for that tax bill. they want to repeal that and remove ice. they want to impeach the president.

we will work with any democrat that has that same goal. >> [inaudible] >> is particularly moving, obviously. my father has a real love of this institution. a love of the house of representatives. it's a love that i share. we have an opportunity as the leader and the whip, to really make a difference. to be in a position where we can take back the majority. you look at what we accomplished in the last congress and how the democrats one, men andthis women all across the political spectrum are going to take a look at that and say, we need the positive economic growth we saw in the last congress, not

the chaos we have already begun to see over there. he told me not to screw it up. [applause] >> [inaudible] [inaudible] >> the republican party has to continue to grow. the youngest woman ever elected to congress is currently serving. we took a beating in suburban areas. we are going to have to work hard to make our message clear. our ideas are going to have to be stronger. we realize that and we will work towards that effort. spent moreomberg than $100 million. he focused on women.

a lot of races became close. i think that's wrong that somebody picks up on gender. i'm proud of the history. no, he picked against republicans. he spent a great deal of money against republican women. the $3 million he spent on top of karen handel. she lost. the money he put into california. that's a contributing factor. i think we have an opportunity to rebuild. i'm proud of the history of the republican party. the very first republican president was abraham lincoln. we stick to our principles, our goals. you will see this party continue to grow to represent all of america. in gender, faith, reality. will be back. >> the incoming class of freshmen members of congress posed for a group photo in front of the capital. they won't be sworn in until january 3 but they are in washington for training sessions and to vote for house leadership. the newly elected congress will have a record number of women and combat veterans.
