on the campaign trail i think that a lot o these freshmen candidates especially the democrats that flipped more conservative districts, we're seeing that campaigning on anti-corruption is a hugely popular issue. we in the midterms in 2018. rather than messaging on this, house democrats wanted to get serious. representative john vervain has been working on the issues for a while. he is at the head of a democracy reform task force and does not accept corporate pack money. this is an issue that is dear o him. he has been consulting with a number of his democratic colleagues for a while. he massive package is an

amalgamation of a bunch of bills that people have been working on. democrats wanted to show they are really serious about training to do bold anticorruption and pro-democracy reform. this is something they want to get done in the house. >> what are republicans saying about the legislation? are they making arguments gainst it? it is a tough one to argue against. ella nilsen: politically, it is tough to argue against. right now, it is thought this has a better chance in the democratic-controlled house. senate minority leader mitch mcconnell has already said of hr one, it will not go anywhere. it is unlikely to even be brought to the floor even though there is a senate companion bill being drafted right now. democrats are looking at mcconnell's message saying, if that is your message that you are against anticorruption and pro-democracy reform, that is reat for us. it is also worth pointing out,

besides the hr one package, others are talking about breaking out individual pieces of it into smaller bills decade could get more bipartisan support. stephanie: besides trying to end the shutdown, they are also working on a separate resolution to deal with a lawsuit over the health care law. what is going on? ella nilsen: house democrats both in their package and this afternoon, they filed a motion to intervene in texas versus the u.s.. this is the conservative state lawsuit against the aca that would strip key parts of the aca like the individual mandate. house democrats are taking a position saying the u.s. justice department would be the one to step in and fight conservative cds but the trump administration has sided with the conservative 80's and house democrats are saying if trump's

department of justice will not do anything, we are going to intervene. stephanie: mention a couple of the top priorities for these new house democrats. where are they going to head in the coming years? ella nilsen: there is a lot they have on their plates. in the coming weeks, hr one -- nancy pelosi also announced the creation of a committee to tackle climate change. expect committee hearings on climate change and the environment. we will see if there is tangible legislation that comes out of that. one of the things that was mentioned today, there's going to be a universal background check introduced next week for something that deals with gun control. a wide range of things democrats are looking at

i republican was elected to idaho's first district after serving a decade in the senate. he works in the commercial real estate and had a career as a marketing executive at an electronics company. jared golden is the first member elected to congress by frank choice or instant runoff oting in which voters rank their candidates by preference taking into account if no candidate wins a majority. mr. golden has held a seat in the state house for four years. he served tours in iraq and afghanistan as a marine before working for maine's republican senator on a committee staff in washington, d.c. former congressman ed returns to congress representing hawaii's first district. he previously represented the second district from 2002-2007. he was a member of the state legislator and served as the house majority leader.
