honorable brian kemp, the 83rd governor of the state of georgia. [applause] governor kemp: thank you so much. thank you so much. [applause] governor kemp: thank you all so much. lieutenant governor duncan, speaker rolston, president pro and members of the general assembly, constitutional officers, members of the judiciary, members of the consular corps, student

ambassadors and my fellow georgians, our state is known along the world as the leader in logistics, cyber, aerospace, and agriculture. our universities and teams are recognized just like our accents and southern hospitality. [applause] governor kemp: with unprecedented growth and on much opportunity, it is a great time to be a georgian. we did not get here alone. many went before us and charted the course. famous,women, some others not, who poured the foundation's for us to build. people like dr. martin luther king jr., supreme court justice -- [applause]

hard-working georgians flashed the first page of the paper and have their name and light. billy henderson is a legendary coach in the georgia sports hall of fame, but he did much more than window football games. coach inspired generations of young georgians and he lived by this motto. it can be done. raised in macon, billy henderson was a winner. he was the most decorated after -- athlete in his high school. he plays baseball and football at the university of georgia and went on to play pro ball with the cubs. over the four decades of coaching, he won a state championship in football, baseball, and even a state championship in swimming. coach new how to turn programs around. the also knew how to build on greatness. thanks to the bold leadership of governor sonny perdue and mason

georgia whether the great recession and emerged stronger than ever. [applause] governor kemp: wages are rising and the unemployment rate is the lowest in 18 years. [applause] governor kemp: thanks to the hard work of the legislature, georgia is the top state in the country for business, six years in a row. governor kemp: -- [applause] with our low: taxes, a business friendly government, and access to logistics hubs like the port of savannah, the atlanta airport, georgia is the epicenter of job growth. the south, andf

soon to be the cyber capital of the world. some think that we have reached our peak. i disagree. as governor, i will build on our compliments. in the years to come, we will spur private sector job creation by cutting taxes and red tape. ,e will fully fund education stand with our farmers and protect the values that we hold dear. [applause] as governor, i will work every day to keep georgia moving in the right direction. my vision is for a safer, stronger state. i know it can be done. [applause] coach henderson's

marked byareer were anniversary -- adversity. he faced countless challenges that molded him as a man and is fired and is a leader -- and inspired him as a leader. as a boy, he lost his father. his mother would walk to work instead of spending money on the bus so she can afford uniforms for billy. 1970 four, coach henderson's youngest son, brad, died in a tragic car accident. he mourned, but never missed a day of practice. coach inherited losing teams with losing attitudes, but he occurred down and got to work. he always scheduled the hardest games so he could turn weakness into opportunity. experiencing incredible growth in the state, we have our challenges as well.

many seem too big to fit. small businesses throughout georgia still feel like it is 2009. 63% of our third-graders aren't reading at grade level. mental health issues, opioid abuse and sex trafficking plague our communities. drugs and getting cartels are flooding our streets with violence and fear. -- as governor, we will make georgia the number one state for small business. we will invest in early learning and protect the vulnerable. we will crack down on organized crime and those who threaten our future. the challenges ahead are great. it can be done. [applause] governor kemp: i met coach henderson when i was 12 years old. to coachto my hometown

a football team that had only one a single game the previous season. i traveled with the team for eight top lug around of bubblegum that the coach chewed on and off the field. men, butt a boy among i guarded that gum with my life. coach realized quickly that the gladiators football program had talent, but they were not a team. in the wake of desegregation, clark central was still divided on racial lines. coach took the team to football camp before the season started. they came back as brothers. years that followed, clark central 13 state championships -- won 3 state championships. he rebuilt a program, but more importantly he rebuilt the

community. our state appears divided. metro versus rural. lack versus white. republican versus democrat. elections rip us apart. after visiting all 159 counties, i can tell you this. we have so much in common. as governor, i will fight for all georgians, not just the ones that voted for me. [applause] [applause] governor kemp: we will address the infrastructure problems in

metro communities to keep our economy growing. we will work around the clock to bring high-speed internet and jobs to rural georgia. -- [applause] governor kemp: i will partner with the legislature to ensure that families have access to affordable health care and the quality -- a quality education, no matter your zip code. [applause] governor kemp: we will keep our schools, streets, and our kids safe. [applause] governor kemp: we will put people ahead of divisive politics. we will be known as a state united. it can be done. [applause]

governor kemp: 11 months ago today, on february 14, two thousand 18, coach billy henderson passed away at the age of 89. i will always cherish the final moments we spent together, talking about the good old days. himel dooley and i carrying off the field after he won a state championship in 1979. his tough love at football camp. the campaign and the kids. shared his wisdom and insight as always, and in our final photo together, he probably wore a camp for governor hat -- he probably wore a kemp for governor hat. [applause] i stand here:

today as george's 83rd governor, but i did not get here alone. i am forever grateful for my who, our three daughters, believed in me when no one else would. [applause] governor kemp: as you know, we are a team and we will never stop. forever grateful for those who came before me. teachers, and mentors like coach billy henderson, who poured the concrete and laid the foundations. in the years to calm, we will build on our compliments. with courage, we will face the challenges that exist. we will unite for the betterment of our state. together, we will put hard work

in georgians first -- and georgians first. [applause] i know there will be adversity. those that would like to terrorist down. there will be difficult days and dark nights. together, we will overcome. like coach said, it can be done. thank you for being here. may god continue to bless this great state of georgia. thank you very much.
