free c-span radio app. >> we will get to your calls in a minute but first john mcardle is whether some details of the debate. >> before we get to the substance, here are the social media trends. this tracks the total number of words spoken by each candidate last night. the former vice president leading in the polls which is not surprising that he has the most numbers of words spoken, under 2500 words spoken. over 2000 words spoken by kamala harris and mayor pete buttigieg last night. bernie sanders was most in polling -- second-most in polling as far as total word count and every other candidate on the stage last night below 1500 words including andrew yang at the bottom with just over 500 words spoken last night. the hillon with newspaper, a senior correspondent, with the wrapup,

comparing the total time given to candidates over the course of the two debates. among the 20 candidates, it was only joe biden and kamala harris who had over 11 minutes speaking time last night. bernie sanders, cory booker, beto o'rourke and mayor pete buttigieg in the 10 minute range of speaking time. elizabeth warren at nine minutes and seven seconds speaking time. hud secretary julian castro, breakout star on the first night of the democratic debate, eight minutes and 13 seconds of speaking time during that first debate. the twitter, looking at trend, the most tweeted about moments from day two of the first round of democratic debates, kamala harris and joe biden having a passionate exchange on race was the most tweeted about moment last night. the second-most was a candidates sharing the first thing they
10:10 am
would do as president and the third most tweeted about moment, kamala harris saying americans not went just want to witness a food fight. they want to know how we can put food on their table. two other maps to show you from google trends. this was the most searched democratic candidates ahead of night two of the democratic debates. bernie sanders and joe biden dominated the searches in states around the country. kamala harris being the most searched candidate in the state of wyoming. that was before the debate but after last night's debate, here's what the chart look like. away, theris far and most searched candidate around the country and mayor pete coming in as widely searched in the moments and hours after the debate. the mostwilliamson, searched candidate in the state of michigan. x,com calling kamala harris the winner of last night to base -- debate and the loser was joe

biden and they point to the moment as one of the most tweeted once last night where the senator confronts a former vice president about his record on race. they say it was that connection that she made on his policy record rather than just his attitude to his colleagues that made the attack on biden so piercing. biden didn't have much to say. he ended his feeble reply on an almost poignant metaphor. take a look. have alsocampaign, we heard, and i will direct this at vice president biden, i do not believe you are a racist. when you commit yourself to the importance of finding common ground. but i also believe, and it's personal, it was hurtful -- to hear you talk about the reputation of two united states senators who built their
10:12 am
reputations and career on segregation of race in this country. it was not only that but you also worked with them to oppose bussing. there was a little girl in california who was part of the second class to integrate her public school and she was bust to school every day. that little girl was me. so i will tell you that on the subject, it cannot be in intellectual debate among democrats. we have to take it seriously. [applause] >> this character race and of my position is a mischaracterization. i did not praise racists, that is not true. if we want to have this campaign litigated on who supported civil rights and whether i did or not, i'm happy to do that. i was a public defender, i did not become a prosecutor. i left a good law firm to become a public defender [applause] when in fact my city was in
10:13 am
flames because of the assassination of dr. king. the viceo, as president of the united states come i worked with a man who in fact, we worked very hard to see to it we dealt with these issue in a major way. the fact is that in terms of youing, the bussing -- would have been able to go to school the same exact way because it was a local decision made by your city council. that's fine, that's what we argued for is that we should not -- we should not break down these lines. the bottom line is everything i have done in my career, iran because of civil rights, continue to think we have to make fundamental changes in civil rights and those civil rights by the way include not just african-americans but the lgbt community. [applause] >> vice president biden, do you agree today that you were wrong to oppose bussing in america then? do you agree? >> i did not oppose bussing in
10:14 am
america. i oppose bussing ordered by the department of education, that's what i opposed. the failure of states to integrate public schools in america, i was part of the second class to integrate in berkeley, california public schools almost today's -- oh most today -- almost two decades after brown versus board of education. >> because you are city council made that decision. >> the l.a. times this morning, their headline -- kamala harris known for caution finds a risky move pays off against joe biden on night two of the democratic debate. rick in irwin, tennessee, democratic caller, let's get your thoughts on what happened last night. who stood out to you? >> ima bernie found that there is something i want to get straight with everybody. i am 67 years old and i am on medicare and i am also a medicaid. about, excusense
10:15 am
me, not being able to go to your own doctor and stuff like that is a bunch of hogwash. in thisll any doctor part of tennessee and tell them i am on medicare and medicaid and they will see me. last night when you are listening to the debate, what to do here on health care and from which candidate? bernie but ay from lot of them were for medicare for all which i think is the right thing to do. i was watching one of the other programs a while ago. and they said if everybody gets medicare for all, you you lose your doctor and you will lose this and that. you won't, you will gain because you will not be put in some kind of network. there is no network for medicare. you go to whatever dr. you want.
10:16 am
if the doctor takes medicare, you go. host: health care dominated the second debate last night like it did the first night. barbara in new york, independent caller. morning, bernie is my candidate. my main comment is about the given an the dnc has exclusive contract to msnbc to broadcast the debates. somebody called yesterday and said that money is god and you really see it with the dnc. they are supposed to be for the people, for the working people but you see where there is money involved, they are just as bad as the republicans. if i cannot watch it on c-span without commercial interruption, i will not watch anymore. i think that was just ridiculous. i also remember when the league of women voters used to do the presidential debates.
10:17 am
it seems to me that it was more fair and more dignified when they did it. i wish they had control over at this time. host: in the wall street journal this morning -- sal 15.3 million 15.3 million viewers for the first democratic debate. charged $100,000 for the ads. some are calling it the top-tier candidates that were debating last night. we are getting your thoughts on what they said and who stood out and who did not perform well. ?id you change your mind republicans, did you watch the entire debate and who poses do you think, the greatest challenge to president trump? we will get more of your thoughts coming up but first, john mcardle with more on the debate. host: you played that clip of joe biden and kamala harris and
10:18 am
that's the most tweeted about exchange. the headlines this morning focused on the performance of the former vice president at last night's debate. this was not the way joe biden wanted the first debate to go. this is from the hill newspaper -- and this from the wall street journal -- plenty of twitter traffic focusing on the vice president's performance. this is from a former top aide to hillary clinton. this was his thoughts last night. said you have two hopes, one if the poor reviews convince your principle that he needs to listen and come to the next

debate, better prepared tter pret round of polls does not register a new just some of the tweets from some of the news media. this is from a correspondent from "new york magazine." o in the told camp saying his staff her they are freaking out about his poor performance. following up with that tweet saying the source said field staff say the campaign organized debate watch parties in early voting states had been "awkward" and biden is not playing well. according to biden's staff, he is not listening to his debate rep and he is set in his ways. some response to her reporting in her tweets from the biden camp, this is kate who is deputy

campaign manager spokesperson for the former vice president's presidential campaign in response to her first tweet saying the biden camp was freaking out. she responded saying "nope." one other quote saying today we had our best online fundraising month.nce our rally last she thanked team joe for their support. one more tweet to show you in terms of twitter reaction. this from president donald trump this morning on twitter. his reaction talking about vice president biden's performance and focusing on bernie sanders as well saying -- he is in japan for the g20 representing our country, i heard it was not a good day for sleepy joe or bernie. one is exhausted and one is nuts. host: larry in massachusetts. did you watch last night or the first night? caller: yes, i did.
10:21 am
thanks for having me on. i was disgusted with the performance of all of them. i am african-american. i am a social worker. not one of them touched on black america's number one issue. about busing.lk i was up here in boston during the 1970's. it was a failure. she should have been against busing. we fail when we decide integrating schools instead of having all schools we control. it was a flop, she should have been against busing. the number one issue for black americans is the racial wealth gap and reparations. none of them speaks, in my mind, for black america.
10:22 am
immigration is killing black america. nobody speaks about that. who pays the cost of all these people coming here? none of these >> we believe this portion of "washington journal" but you can watch all of our programs online at www.c-span.org. live now to leesburg, virginia where historian john meacham is muttering a discussion with former president jimmy carter and former vice president walter mondale. you can see them on your screen and they will talk about human rights. this is hosted by the carter center. [applause] >> the fact that they are getting to hang out today is a treat for both of them so thank you very much for that will stop advisoran's the senior for human rights and special representative on women's and s
