c-span, and the house and senate live online, or you can listen live on our free radio app. we spoke with a reporter about the week ahead. flatley reports on congress for bloomberg news. the week, let's start with defense secretary nominee, mark asper. he's being fast tracked to the senate for a vote. tell us about him and some issues we might hear in debate about his nomination. daniel: sure. esper is right now secretary of the army. he has held that position since trump came into office, and has been sort of waiting in the wings. when patrick shanahan was the presumptive nominee for defense secretary after jim mattis left, he was viewed as somebody who was in the running but did not get the nod. now he is on the fast track. he had a confirmation hearing this past weekend sailed through that. got frompushback he senators was from senator

elizabeth warren, who pressed him on his work for raytheon. he was a vp in government relations their and their top lobbyist on capitol hill, and she asked about whether that would present a conflict of interests. she wanted him to make a commitment to not work for another defense contractor for four years after he left government service. he wouldn't commit to that. she asked for a couple of other concessions he wouldn't agree to, which he said was based on advice of his counsel at the dod. and despite that, it seemed like the other senators on the committee were very laudatory of him. he was actually introduced by senator tim kaine, a democrat who had very nice things to say about him. so the word is, they are going to have a first vote on him on monday. and it could be as soon as tuesday he gets his final vote. hayes predicted to sail through, barring any unforeseen circumstances. -- he is predicted to sail

through, barring any unforeseen circumstances. he worked in the senate as an aid on the foreign relations committee, he was a classmate of mike pompeo, the secretary of state, he has been in this world a long time and has a lot of friends, both democrats and republicans. he may get opposition and questions may continue to dog him for his work for a major defense contractor and wed -- and whether that is a conflict of interests, but he seems to have gotten off pretty well, gotten off to certainly a very fast start. issuesne of the other the senate has been facing is the 9/11 victim compensation fund. when it -- when are we going to see more action on area kevin -- map more action on it -- when are we going to see more action on it?

this: congress has funded victims compensation fund in various ways over the years. are trying to do now is fund it through the end of the century, essentially, to 2092. longis dependent on how wi us.ors are with us: -- are long time horizon. but it passed the house that -- the house last week through the efforts of jon stewart, and also members of the fdny, the fire department of new york, the police department of new york, who came to capitol hill to lobby for this bill. so it passed the house about a week ago and now heads to the senate floor. on wednesday, senator kirsten gillibrand tried to pass it by unanimous consent. that was blocked by republican senator brand -- republican

senator rand call and republican senator mike lee, who had concerns about how the bill would pay for -- would be paid for and how long it would be in effect. so the vote was pushed into next week, but it is expected the senate will vote on that tuesday, and both rand paul and mike lee will get at least a vote on their amendment. they are not expected to get that. so there is a delay right now, which has caused a lot of criticism to be aimed at both and lee,li got -- paul from jon stewart and 9/11 survivors and those who cleaned up the site. but it appears mitch mcconnell is committed to moving this, so next week i think we will see it move. you: we will keep following p. flatley, daniel and bloomberg.com. thank you. >> watching c-span monday for
