tlaib: thank you. [applause] >> white house counselor kellyanne conway took questions from reporters on the white house driveway on the economy, the possibility of recession, and protests in hong kong. this is 10 minutes. reporter: the president was tweeting about antifa saying he would designate antifa as an organization of terror. under what authority can he designate domestic terrorism organizations? there is no law that allows the resident or any agent of the government to do that, as opposed to foreign terrorist
6:02 am
organizations designated by the secretary of state. kellyanne conway: the president is looking at that and we discussed that there was an increase in domestic terror. the director of the fbi made that clear on july 23 in a sworn testimony to congress. most of you do not cover that. it was the day before mueller's not so impressive testimony. the director made clear that there's an increase in the number of arrests the at the fbi is making that includes white supremacy, antifa and probably anti-semitism. all forms of hate, which does come in many different forms. i do not know how anybody can watch the tape coming out of portland and think any of our first amendment rights does not include violence. you cannot pick and choose it is criminally representative and punishment. reporter: you cannot just make
6:03 am
up domestic terrorism. kellyanne: the president is responding to the increase of domestic terror. it includes antifa and anti-semitism. i am happy that the fbi is focused on international and domestic terror. anyone else? [inaudible] kellyanne the president would : like a humanitarian, peaceful resolution. we are watching the protesters in hong kong, and they are not a small group. he made that very clear yesterday and hopes there is a peaceful resolution there, as well. >> does the u.s. still support pro-democracy protesters around the world? kellyanne: the united states supports democracy around the world and i just answered the question about hong kong and china. the president has tweeted and made remarks about the protesters in hong kong and is working on many different issues
6:04 am
and situations in china, and that is among them. >> can you tell us about the president scheduled to the g7? which leaders is he going to meet? kellyanne: that has not been finalized yet. you have seen the president before and he will be meeting with any number of world leaders while he participates in the regular meetings. that will be finalized this week. >> questions about fears about a recession. the president said yesterday that most economists say there will not be a recession. do know who he is talking to about that? kellyanne: yes, i do. it is nice to see the media final covering the trump economy. you are only using it when you can use the sesame street word, "recession." you are using a tweet here or a report there or in economists words here or there.
6:05 am
the fact is the fundamentals of our economy are very strong. you know it. we have more people working right now than ever before in the nation's history and more people going back to work. we have people that do not just have job availability but job security. we have job mobility. they can go get one of the 7 million plus jobs available, or one apart from the one they have, or one that does not have benefits, or one too far from home. they have all these choices called freedom and free market. contrast that to medicare for all and green new deals and taxes for everyone else and free health care for illegal immigrants. that would tank our economy and everybody knows that. i see post the mueller non-bombshell, conspiracy that never happened. i see now the focus on the economy, because that is the president's strongest suit. the majority of americans
6:06 am
approve of the way he is handling the economy in most legitimate polls. i would also say consumer confidence is high. the optimism is there. half a million plus manufacturing jobs since the president got elected. ,he unemployment rates are low the confidence levels are high, and that matters because consumers are spending their money and many of them or saving. many others do not have to dip into their savings to meet a sick household needs. he did not need a proverbial magic wand that his presidential predecessor claimed he would need. he just needed the encouraged that others do not have to cut taxes across the board including for a job creators and businesses and employers to double the childcare tax credit, to happen energy development program in this country that now lets us be a net exporter of natural gas and oil for the

first time at these levels, and the deregulation agenda. we hear from many small business owners, that the regulatory that is about 12 out for everyone in and the new one because regulation is important. it is very important to our nation's safety and well-being. business owners say it is just as important as a tax cut, so fundamentals remain strong and it is good to see her people covering the economy again after a lengthy hiatus, but again, you don't have a magic wand to say we are in a recession. last one. reporter: [inaudible] kellyanne: the president, fortunately, a year and a half ago had the courage to do what his predecessor did not, he did that in march of 2016. the national criminal instant background check system. there were many loopholes in that. he fixed that. that was bipartisan.
6:08 am
it was part of the budget deal. that would have prevented the murderer whose name i will not of in charleston in june 2015. at the historically black church. that should have prevented aurora, that should have prevented sutherland springs. people who should have failed background checks if their prior felony convictions were in the system and if the data, the systems were talking to each other properly. the president also was looking at what we can do to take a look at the country and these fact patterns that are chilling to so many of us. look at the parkland, florida shooter. he aspired to be a school shooter and got his wish. local authorities had visited his different homes dozens and dozens of times and nothing happened. he was not removed. he apparently did not get the help he needed, and yet he got firearms and made good on his aspiration to become a school shooter.
6:09 am
dayton, ohio, this person had a kill list and a rape list in high school. somehow the juvenile records did not transfer over. when the president says we need to fix the mental health system, he is not saying everybody in treatment for mental health is a shooter. he is not saying every shooter has mental health issues. what he is saying is we have specific incidences where that has been an issue and it has been ignored. i am very grateful and overwhelmed with joy and gratitude to all of the first responders who worked arduously to stop the would be mass three shooters in the last week. people are learning when you see something, say something after 9/11 does not just apply to packages. it applies to people. the more people can stand up and say, you know what? this kid down the street is scary everybody, he comes out with firearms or he seems off at

school, you can make anonymous tips. it can be investigated. it can be investigated so that people who need help get it and they do not get firearms when they should not have firearms. all of this can be stopped. there is a great politico article from about three days ago all of you should read. it is entitled the real reason why president never passed gun control and never took action. it goes down chapter and verse how he did not campaign on it in 2008 or 2012. you had a lot of democrats in the senate, some who are still serving on capitol hill -- when they are here -- who voted against the assault weapons ban in 2013. there was not a lot of excitement and robust effort on the part of the democrats. they had a veto-proof senate majority to pass gun control. this president is trying to fix the problems we see as deficits within the system. he gave a speech two weeks ago this morning that said he would
6:11 am
look at red flags if they were right. he would look at a violation bill. we are looking at many different avenues. there will be no confiscation of firearms from americans who possess them legally under the second amendment and through the heller decision by the united states supreme court. read the article. we will not confiscate legally owned firearms without due process. that is not going to happen and that is where some of this is going. thank you. >> today, vice president mike pence shares the meeting of the national space council in chantilly, virginia.
