1:55 am
they devalued their current a, they are pumping money in, and we are not -- we have taken in tens of billions of dollars. i gave the farmers eckstein billion dollars -- $16 billion. they were targeted. tariffs which are lot, than $16 billion by a i have given the farmers $16 billion and they are happy. they want me to continue this fight and we will win this fight. we are having conversations with china, meetings are scheduled. the meeting in september has not been canceled. we will see what happened. china has lost a lot of

1:59 am
we have people coming up to cap david. -- camp david. sunday morning i am going to fema. ,enator rubio and senator scott i do not think the governor should he there, he wants to be in florida. job. doing a fantastic reporter: [indiscernible] notident trump: i have thought about it until the question. ,t looked dead center mar-a-lago can handle itself, it is a powerful place. i am worried about the state of florida. this hurricane is looking like this could be a record-setting hurricane. maybe things change. we are hoping for one element to happen, that it makes a right turn and goes north before hitting sure.
2:00 am
that would be great. that is a small percentage at this point. >> [indiscernible] president trump: right. >> [indiscernible] president trump: so we are bringing them down to about 8600 in afghanistan. we are really a police force more than anything else. that something we could win quickly if we wanted to kill a lot of people, which i do not. we are getting along with a lot of people in afghanistan right now. we have a very good negotiations going on with the taliban. the taliban is saying they are going to do things. we will see if that's so. we have not done a deal yet but we will bring it down to about 8600. >> [indiscernible] president trump: we have not seen that.
2:01 am
we have not seen that. >> there are reports that there is a military buildup by the russians in georgia. president trump: that's not good news. i'm not happy about that but we have not seen it. >> u.s. companies were contributing to the economic slowdown. can you explain what you meant? president trump: i don't know what you are talking about. go ahead. >> you said that badly run and we companies are partly blaming -- weak companies are blaming tariffs. president trump: a lot of companies are trying to blame tariffs. if they are running badly or having a bad quarter, they are likely to blame the tariffs. it is not the tariffs. it's called bad management. a lot of companies are coming out not affected by the tariffs. the tariffs have put us in an incredible negotiating position and i say that to china
2:02 am
directly. it's only going to get worse for china, but i say it to china directly. because of the tariffs, we are in an incredible negotiating position. we happen to be taking in billions of dollars. -- had been taking cents from china. we have given the farmers $16 billion out of a much larger purse. we are doing very well. it was on one of the important shows that i read this morning someplace that some companies for their poor performance are blaming tariffs, even though they don't mean that. they are just getting away with it. >> [indiscernible] what's going on in hong kong? president trump: i do, i do. the question was, do i see a connection between hong kong and what's going on with the tray talks?
2:03 am
i think it -- trade talks? i think if it weren't for the tray talks, honk -- trade talks, hong kong would be in much more trouble. it puts us in a bad position if there is not a humane weight of handling the problem -- way of handling the problem. i let them know, handle it in a humane fashion. i do believe that because of what i am doing with trade, that is very much keeping down the temperature in hong kong. i think by really a lot, because china wants to make a deal. i actually think china has to make a deal, but that is holding it down in hong kong. you understand that, right? >> [indiscernible] president trump: i think it was automatic. i don't say fire or not fire. i think she had a bad night. it was unfortunate. drinking.he was
2:04 am
the whole thing was very unfortunate and i think the press is very dishonest because it was supposed to be off the record. but still, you don't say things like she said, which were a little bit hurtful to some people. >> is that true? president trump: no. tiffany is great. i love tiffany. i love tiffany. >> [indiscernible] >> can you specifically state how you are preparing for hurricane dorian? president trump: i have said it. responders,, first tremendous law enforcement. we are working together with governor desantis. we are also -- by the way, i have to tell you, georgia is very much in its path also. georgia could be very much affected. we are working with the great governor of georgia. we have our top people there. it has really been amazing. i have to say, we have done a great job in puerto rico. we were totally ready in puerto
2:05 am
rico. puerto rico got lucky, it missed puerto rico. we were really ready in puerto rico. we worked very well with the government. i have my issues with their government, but we work very well. the new governor was on top of things. we had a really great relationship with puerto rico. fortunately, we did not have to use what we had. we were set to go in puerto rico. we were in great shape. >> [indiscernible] president trump: we are thinking about florida evacuations, but it's a little too soon. people are getting ready. it may have to be evacuated. sections may have to be evacuated. we will probably make that determination on sunday. >> [indiscernible] the polish government demands reparations from germany for the second world war. do you support this demand? president trump: i think that
2:06 am
will be between poland and germany and i get along with them both. that's between poland and germany. >> are you concerned that you don't have a permanent fema administrator or acting security in the straighter? -- security administrator? president trump: i like the word acting. acting is good. if i like the people, i make them permanent. acting gives you great flexibility that you don't have permanent, so i'm ok with the word acting. when i like people, i make them permanent, but i could leave acting for a long time. >> thank you, president trump. many studies have shown that legal access to marijuana results in less opioid abuse and fewer overdose deaths. many states have legalized marijuana. do you think it will happen federally during your presidency? president trump: we will see what's going on. it's a very big subject. right now, we are allowing states to make that decision. a lot of states are making that decision, but we are allowing the states to make that
2:07 am
decision. [indiscernible] president trump: i think it's terrible. i think those allegations are absolutely terrible. >> [indiscernible] well, usmca has become very popular. that's our deal with mexico and canada. unions are liking it, farmers are loving it, manufactures are really liking it. it means we will not be losing companies to mexico and canada and probably elsewhere, you figured, when you look at it a certain way. they will not be moving very quickly to mexico, canada anymore. the usmca is a very important deal. i think it will be a very bipartisan deal. i hope nancy pelosi puts it up for a vote. i can tell you many democrats will be voting for it if it's put up for a vote.
2:08 am
if it's not put up for a vote, i think it's a very bad thing for our country. it's a very diligently, hard negotiated deal. we got the approval from mexico. they voted. canada is ready to vote. they have essentially approved it. we are waiting for a vote. nancy pelosi i think will do the right thing, i really do. as i told nancy pelosi, view it as a bipartisan deal. people want it. it's replacing the worst deal in trade we have ever made, which is nafta, total disaster. it took our car industry out, it took our industry out. x1 of the worst deals i have ever seen -- it's one of the worst deals i have ever seen. >> [indiscernible] president trump: i just think the fed is making a big mistake, because if you look at what the other fed equivalents are doing around the world, they are at a much lower rate. and makes it -- it makes it much
2:09 am
harder for us to compete. we are doing better than everyone else, but the fed is hurting me. the fed is making it very hard to compete, but we are still far ahead of everyone since my 2.5 years. you look at it -- look, go back to election day and go the day after. take november 9, and you look, we are up over 50%. that is pretty much amazing. you look at our jobs. are job numbers are fantastic -- our job numbers are fantastic, probably 3.6%. african-american, hispanic american, asian, we are talking about the history of our country, the best job numbers we have ever had. on this very day i just heard a number. almost 160 million people are working, the most ever in the history of our country. we have incredible numbers. i our fed lowered the rates, think our stock market would be like a rocketship. it's already very close to a new record.
2:10 am
we are not very far away from a new record. we've had some very good days in the last week. if the fed lowers the rates like they should, the fact is they went up point to fast on they also did quantitative tightening. big mistake. fortunately, the economy is so strong it was able to handle that. if they lowered the rate, you would see our stock market be like a rocketship. it would be good for us. i think it would go up a lot. >> [indiscernible] >> on columbia, how do you feel -- mark ket leader lever calling [indiscernible] president trump: you are talking about the country of columbia? >> yes. president trump: we have a great relationship. they are not doing badly. they have a problem because of venezuela. a lot of people are pouring in. we have had a great relationship with columbia.
2:11 am
>> [indiscernible] president trump: we have a call in. she will be calling me back as soon as they get to camp david. it's just absolutely false. she's a wonderful person. she has studied so hard, she's a great student, and she's a great person. i look forward to talking to her. i will be talking to her as soon as i get -- and i love tiffany. tiffany is a great person. thank you very much. >> [indiscernible] president trump: incredible man. >> [indiscernible] ♪ >> c-span's "washington journal ," live every day with news and policy issues that impact you. coming up saturday morning, american enterprise institute visiting fellow jim harper discusses the use of cryptocurrency and the future of money. then library of congress will
