7:17 am
biden to do it, it is okay. i don't understand. it should be the same in both. host: a lot of people have made that statement. to take aohn mcardle look at the instances in the joe biden event and with the president's conversation with ukraine. let's go to delray beach, florida, republican line caller: . caller: good morning. i have a question for a lot of people. maybe you can answer it. at this point, can the white house, member of congress, or even a citizen say a vote on the rules that adam schiff is doing is unconstitutional, blow the whistle, spiked the ball, stop the game, take it to the supreme court? host: what makes you think that is a possibility? caller: i am asking if it is
7:18 am
possible. can somebody say the vote that was taken on the house, which we now have a house divided, can somebody in the white house for or a citizen say this is an unconstitutional proceeding which has such a dangerous precedent, the same as when the president's attorney, ifn his office is raided, they can happen to the president, it can happen to you. host: the house voted on this process, they started the process expected to go to the senate sometime after it reached a final vote on the house side -- caller: that is the impeachment process. i am saying adam schiff's process of not allowing -- he is the judge, executioner, jury,
7:19 am
and he is holding the keys to who is going to speak, what they are going to say and if they are going to say it at all. host: you will have the inquiry hearings, the public hearings, supposedly it will go to the house judiciary committee. at some point, they may hold hearings in the process. if they choose to do so, they will write articles of impeachment and they will go to the senate. independent line, charlie in georgia, go ahead. caller: good morning. can you hear me? host: you are on. caller: i agree with the .entleman before i am wondering are they thinking about next year, do they really
7:20 am
want him not to be elective? -- elected? i find it hard -- realize something is wrong with this. other than that, you all have a good day. host: do you plan to watch the hearings today? caller: absolutely. i am not like a lot of liberals that have called in already and they have already made their mind up. i haven't seen any proof. i have to make my decision when i see something. host: your mind is not totally made up on this issue? caller: it is absolutely ridiculous. the point is when a president is dealing with another foreign leader, they do and it is called cooperation. so far, this president probably
7:21 am
of better cooperation out all world leaders than any in the last 15 years. let's go to atlanta georgia, democrats line. good morning. trump from following day 1 and my thing is it seems like he is more about the border than the american people. everybody wants to say joe biden did the same thing, joe biden is not held to the same standards as the president.
7:22 am
my thing is he should be impeached. host: what do you think you will learn from the hearings today? the young man has -- when he came forth, he was not lying. think he should be impeached. i say give him a fair chance, but the american people have a right to learn what is going on in washington. host: thanks for having -- mike. caller: thanks for having me on. 3.5ve to say, they's last years has been a disappointment for myself. trust inely have no
7:23 am
this president. i think he does need to be impeached and i think we need to get someone new in there. the earlier caller talked about it's all about from, trump, trump. he never takes responsibility. the only thing he does is get .id of cabinet members there is so much chaos in that white house. host: if you think he has to be impeached, what do you base that on? mainly, what i think we are going to hear today and that is that i believe he reached out to the ukrainian leader and going much verbatim was around saying i will hold your money until -- i want you to say
7:24 am
this about joe biden. there are numerous things over the last few years. there is all kinds of stuff that has tainted his presidency. host: that is some of the perspective of folks who will be watching the hearings today starting at 10:00. you can see that on c-span 3, the first public hearings and here to tell us more about what to expect is john mcardle. to take ast want minute to dig into some of the players viewers will be watching, it takes place in the house intelligence committee consisting of 22 members, 13 democrats and 9 republicans. the oldest member, peter welch. note on those theers, when they get to
7:25 am
member questioning, members will get 5 minutes. that comes after that prolonged period of questioning the chairman and the ranking member will have. let's dig into the chairman and ranking member. served from 2015 to 2019, a former federal prosecutor. holds his law degree from harvard, the ranking number sitting next to him is devin nunes. 9 terms in congress, represents california possible 22nd district. has a masters degree in agriculture, former state agriculture.u.s.
7:26 am
what you will be hearing from him is likely some version of yesterday, this memorandum, and 18 page memorandum. here are the four key points morepoint to, look to hear from republican members today. it republican saying the july 25 phone call shows "no evidence orty or covert ukraine was not aware of the assistance. security at the time of the phone call and they say president trump -- both of that occurred without ukraine investigating president trump's political rivals. that is likely the key points
7:27 am
republicans will be hitting, so look for that and that from the memo released yesterday. host: let's go to joshua in ohio, independent line. joshua in dayton, ohio, hello. caller: can you hear me? i think what we are going to hear today is a position of power. first of all, it is already too late. power.s a person of we are going to realize there is nothing you can do about it right now. trump has been getting away with everything -- he is brave enough .o be out in the open with it he already has that power and there is nothing we can do. this process is not going to do anything but point out the truth
7:28 am
and everything else. getp is still going to elected at the end of the day. the world is like a chess game. host: with that in mind, do you think impeachment will happen? caller: no. everybody is going to fall in line. when you realize his power and everybody that is behind him and everything, the unit -- united states is behind him. host: do you think the house side will impeach him? caller: no. host: why is that? why is that specifically? caller: i was once told when you are at the top of the totem pole, there is nothing that can reach you. to everything, there is nothing people can do. you have to fall in line, that is the way life is.
7:29 am
all the stuff we are doing and might be true, nothing is going to happen. host: steve, democrats line. caller: i want to make a quote before i go in. butarc of history is long, it bends towards justice. this is a wonderful day in american history. i am extremely excited to experience this day and i just read about the prosecutor from the democratic side, mr. goldman, an amazing guy. host: what do you expect from mr. goldman today? things.amazing i read about how he made it -- i think it was assistant u.s. attorney and his prosecution -- his portfolio is amazing.
7:30 am
i think we are in a good place. we are going to find out the proof today. i think everybody should sit back and relax. possible if we have callve to debate, people in and say whatever they say -- we don't have the chance of rebuttal like people call and say trump hasn't done anything wrong. what do you mean he hasn't done anything wrong? host: what do you think is going to be different than what we solve reported from the closed-door testimony and what are you looking for when it comes to truth? caller: now we are going to hear actuallyhe people who
7:31 am
were in whatever incidents happen. we are hearing it directly from -- basically before they had the investigation where they had to find out if he was guilty to press charges. now the charges have been pressed. bob mueller never came up and said anything. it is a totally different investigation. host: let's hear from irene, republican line, go ahead. believe it is very serious and this is important, if everyone takes time to do
7:32 am
some serious reach hurts -- serious research because the media is very effectively brainwashing a lot of people to believe a certain way, especially if you lean more toward liberalism, progressivism, basically what you are doing is you are not giving the two sided coin, if you will. there is a framework going on. they are doing this deliberately, the democratic party is doing this deliberately to sabotage and discredit our sitting president. all that heto apply has done, that he would actually petty toething that is say he spoke to another country, ukraine, to tell them you need to do this and do that because he never used those words.
7:33 am
this is what schiff put into the minds of the people and that is what they walked away with. host: what research have you done leading up to this? for two point five years, if not more, all these investigations twisted and perverted his words. comments. able to say he is able to talk squarely into the eye of the public. if he is telling lies, tell us what those lies are. they cannot even state exactly what they are impeaching him on. host: that is irene. plenty of events taking place today. at 10:00 is where you can see that on c-span 3.
7:34 am
the testimony today and we hear another one on friday. if you want to follow, you can watch on television and we will do it uninterrupted when they take breaks. other than that, gavel-to-gavel coverage of what is going on. you can learn more at c-span.org . learn from the opening statements that the witnesses did in closed-door testimony. you can find other information at c-span.org. if you are going to be out, you can listen on the radio app and take advantage of that. no today, just your calls, guests. you can call us on the lines, text us and when you text, all we ask is for you to give your name, city, and state.
7:35 am
bill in north carolina. host: you are on. caller: i just got a comment. american trump supporters allow them to slander lifelong government and military servants when he or any of his people in his family have never served, that is shameful. these are lifelong, devoted government military servants for us. somehow all of them and everyone is wrong and he is right. it is like your 12-year-old from school and the parents believe the child. host: what do you learn from
7:36 am
them specifically? in the testimonies of he reached out to biden is not in america -- i am losing words here because i am watching your tv show now -- they keep comparing what trump did to what .iden did the difference there was he was doing it for the president, doing it for half of the e.u. and many other countries behind him on that prosecutor. trump was doing it because of biden and the server because giuliani and the cronies infected his brain.
7:37 am
his former campaign people have even gone on tv and wish people would stop infecting .his man's brain people, please, do not let any of the trump people ever hold a fseat in america. good morning. theyld like to know how are trying to impeach trump on a bunch of things. host: what do you mean by that? , they dide clintons not impeach them or go through procedures to finish what they had started. it seems like they let everybody go on that one and now they are trying to impeach trump and trump has been an outstanding president for us.
7:38 am
he has done a lot of good for us. the unemployment rate is down lower than basically it has ever been and -- the media still tries to make everybody believe how much of a bad man and a liar he is. host: president clinton -- the articles of impeachment were passed in the house, he was acquitted on the senate side. will you be watching what is going on? caller: yes, i will be. i was talking about hillary clinton, is what i meant, that me rephrase what i said. when they were looking into her emails and everything, they completely stopped doing that. host: when it comes from the ukraine -- when it comes to the ukraine situation, what do you hope to learn? proof that everything trump did was perfectly fine. i don't see how they could even say it was not.
7:39 am
they are just finding little bits and pieces and twisting them to fit their agenda. host: when you say we will see the proof, what do you think that is and what do you think today's testimony will give you as far as proof? caller: i believe they are going to find out what was said is completely twisted around by media, the far-left, everything else. it is all just going to come together and it will be a big joke. his: that is don giving perspective. you can do the same during the course of our time together and give us a call. you can post on social media and text us on this first public hearing. you will hear from the ranking member and the chairman, members of the intelligence committee themselves, you may hear from other people during the process
7:40 am
of the hearing and with more on that, here is john mcardle. mention theller democratic staff lawyer that is going to be taking center stage. his name is daniel goldman. on the housetitle intelligence committee is senior advisor and investigations director, he is a former deputy chief of the organized crime unit for the southern district of new york. he holds his law degree from stanford university law. the washington post today with a profile piece on him. friends and colleagues said goldman has had tremendous training for the bright lights of the national stage. preparing for the trial of billy walter, she knew it would make big headlines.
7:41 am
she requested goldman to be on the trial team because he has a little bit of swagger as a trial lawyer and a confidence that serves him well. he is one of the most successful sports gamblers. he was convicted on all counts and sentenced to five years in prison. daniel goldman is the man adam schiff plans to differ significant amounts of times to during that extended questioning time period on the republican side of the aisle. take also expected to center stage today, chief investigations officer for the minority counsel on the oversight and government reform committee is now part of the intelligence committee as well and practiced commercial litigation in philadelphia and washington, d.c.. withashington post as well a profile piece on him.
7:42 am
a half-dozen former colleagues ad bosses praised him as straight shooter and an attorney who is deliberate and low key and it will make him an asset to republicans amid intense public scrutiny. it is not something he would ask for. it is not in his dna to ask for something like this. he speaks with authority. he will ask a few simple questions and demonstrate there is no there there. host: if you missed the hearing and want to watch it in its entirety, tune in tonight. you can see that on c-span 2. let's go to georgia, bradley is next. caller: i wanted to tell america to keep the eye on the law and everything trump does is to help
7:43 am
vladimir putin as payback for the 2016 election and we all know trump is beholden to , erdogan, putin, all these other people. host: how does that relate to today's hearings? caller: the whole reason he was was -- up the missiles if you look deeper, everything he does is to help vladimir putin. we cannot look at trump as the problem, he is a symptom. the true problem is the republican party, they are the enemy of the united states people. they are the party of tyrants, corporate greed. the republican party is the true problem with this country. host: tony from district heights, maryland, good morning. caller: i concur with the last caller and i want to add one more thing, they are the party of racists.
7:44 am
let me go back to the impeachment hearing, what do you think about today's hearings and what do you hope to learn from it? caller: i already know what i am going to learn from it. host: tell me what you expect to learn from it, then. caller: i already know what is going to be said, the difference between donald trump and biden want -- toen did not be fired because he was not digging don't -- dirt on the political rival. you let these callers call and say biden did the same thing and he did not. i don't know why you do that, you pete -- keep the public confused. host: i would counteract we do more for the public than monette networks withmost coverage and the information we provide. all of that available at our website.
7:45 am
wayne in south carolina, republican line, good morning. caller: good morning, sir and good morning, america. i have a few comments. i 100% disagree with your last two callers. i am a united states air force disabled veteran. time. been to v.a. a long if people look at our economy, everywhere you go in our country , you can hardly get on the road for traffic -- builders on the road. he is protecting our second amendment rights and our religious freedom. host: aside from that, what do you think specifically about the impeachment hearing? caller: can i tell you what i think about it? the democrats are wasting their time and wasting our money. host: why do you think it is a waste of time?
7:46 am
caller: it is all false, it is a big circus show. thistried everything and ukraine and whatever, it is a waste of time and they cannot beat president trump. the only way they can do is to try to impeach him. lindsey graham has already said call call.u for taking my god put president trump in there and democrats, you cannot remove him until god says it is over. host: denise, hello. caller: i am frightened of trump, i did not want him to be elected. i am looking for him to be impeached. i am hoping to see the things i have seen and heard with my own ears out of his mouth to
7:47 am
validated -- to be validated today. host: such as what? helpr: that he did ask for in his reelection campaign, which i find extremely unethical and immoral. he does a lot of that, and maybe in business, that is ok. when you are running a country, it is not. you have to be ethical and aboveboard. hope to learnyou from the hearings in regard to your personal take on the president's phone call with the president of ukraine? caller: i am believing there is a lot of people out there and a lot of the witnesses believe a lot of the things i am seeing and hearing myself, that he did try to bribe ukraine and it his foreign because
7:48 am
policies, he does not understand what he is doing, he may be doing great for this country, but if we lose in our foreign policies, we have lost. host: when it comes to the foreign policy with ukraine, what makes it an issue in your mind? ukraine is our allies -- to hold back money for any reason once it had been appropriated to them is not we arend for him to say getting that for you, i have a favor for you, though. that does not sound right. host: republicans would argue the money came anyway, do you think that would help or hinder the case democrats will make? caller: no because attempted bribery is still bribery. that is my feeling. my daughter is a lawyer.
7:49 am
you attempt to murder somebody, you need to get in trouble anyway whether you kill them or not, if you try. host: independent line, patrick, hello. caller: good morning. donald trump, when he was running for president, he would tell us he wanted to drain the swamp and i really believed we needed to drain the swamp. he has turned the swamp into a cesspool. the difference between what donald trump has done is he was acting for a favor. he would give the money to ukraine if they would do him a personal favor. he was asking him to do a political favor to investigate his political rival, which is .riminal
7:50 am
he has no morals whatsoever. host: will you be watching the hearings today? caller: i will be. on-and-off, so i will listen to the radio. host: what do you think you will learn from them? caller: there is not much i can learn anymore because he has no morals. he is the worst individual i have seen or heard of in my life. you cannot lie as much as he does, you cannot steal as much as he does. host: that is patrick from chicago, illinois. 202-748-8000 for democrats. 202-748-8001 for republicans. and independents, 202-748-8002. if you want to text us, 202-748-8003 is how you do that. here is john mcardle. we promised to keep and
7:51 am
i on the president's twitter handle -- keep an eye on the president's twitter handle. democrats have stacked the deck against president trump and the republicans and leaked out everything. steveesident quoting ducey. speaker pelosi at 7:30, patriotism means putting country ahead of politics and speaking out when you see something wrong. the witnesses coming forward have shown that patriotism again and again. this from congressman mark meadows, c-span viewers will know he played a major role in the investigation so far, has been one of the public faces for republicans. he along with jim jordan and others would often come out before the cameras and talk about that closed-door testimony. mark meadows saying washington democrats begin the public phase

of another unfounded and serious attempt to overturn the results of the 2016 election and today we stand up to stop it. reactions so far this morning from facebook, twitter, and text messages. this text from michigan, hope republicans don't do their usual grandstanding, get to the facts in a civilized manner. this is carol, today is the day for patriots to put country first over trump who is corrupt, liar. and a pathological trump only ever serves himself. one more, ricardo from richard from facebook saying we want to hear from the whistleblower and hunter biden. the whistleblower and hunter biden on the list submitted by republican members of the intelligence committee of the
7:53 am
witnesses they wanted to come forward. the whistleblower and hunter biden not on that list. this is what adam schiff wrote about republican witness requests in his response over the last couple days. he said the committee will give consideration to innocence within the scope of the .mpeachment inquiry adam schiff saying in that letter to republicans nor will the committee facilitate any efforts by president trump or his allies to threaten, intimidate, or retaliate against the whistleblower who courageously unlawfully raised concerns about the president's conduct. host: john mcardle will give
7:54 am
information about the impeachment inquiry. the first public hearing at 10:00 is how you can do that. tom from new york on the republican line, go ahead. in the united states of america, you have the right to face your accuser. i don't know why these people cannot come forward and accuse him of something. host: you are concerned about the process, is that what you are saying? caller: they only put a certain amount of witnesses on, who they wanted and the democrats, democrats are not allowed to put certain people -- this is america. someone says you did something wrong, you have the right to face the accuser and say i did not do it and they have the right to say you did do it. i don't know why democrats are hiding everything. there will be a lot of
7:55 am
witnesses, who is missing from the list? caller: the whistleblower and hunter biden. host: why do you think they are important to the price s -- process? caller: that is what it is all about. they have the right to face his accuser. host: the house side sets up its own rules when it comes to impeachment, the constitution does layout that congress has the power to impeach. the house basically essentially creates its own rules depending on the situation as we have seen over the last couple impeachment processes. that is the point of today. andcan make those calls text us and tweet us as well, your thoughts about the hearing and what you expect to learn. whether they are appearing or not appearing. linda in florida, hello.
7:56 am
caller: good morning, pedro. thank you for c-span. i wanted to say a couple things and i will be off the line. both democrats and republicans, confirmationr from bias and that is why we want to blame c-span instead of looking for the facts ourselves. that is why you don't get to hear the truth with all of it, your job is to present. in regards to this impeachment, it is like an attempted bank robbery if people can see it that way and those things that john mcardle put up about what republicans are going to say in that attempted bank robbery, which is wrong, there was no pressure on the phone call, that means the bank manager had no pressure because anyone can walk into a bank. he did not have a letter, he did not have a gun.
7:57 am
the other thing about the bank robbery is to be able to say the ukrainians got the money anyways , so it was not held up. that doesn't mean everything. that just means the bank manager says he did not rob the bank, so do we not send him to jail or do we not prosecute him or seek to find truth if you go into the bank with a smoking gun? this for this. transcript?an the caller: they did not even get the right letter put out. he actually paraphrased. when we get the right thing, then we can look at it fully. no means i want this for that. host: braswell, georgia, independent line, hello. caller: hello?
7:58 am
host: you are on, go ahead. caller: i always have been a democrat. i am moving out of the democrat party. i can imagine anyone supporting someone who wants to accuse -- you don't go behind closed doors like everybody else if you have nothing to hide. -- he does not tell the truth. everybody has a right to defend themselves. that is not the way you do it in this country, go and lock the doors and listen to people, it is rigged. i cannot imagine members that claim to be democrat that would
7:59 am
support this particular thing. host: members of the intelligence committee had a chance to question witnesses in the closed-door hearings and they will have the chance to to do the same in the first public hearing. that is what we are talking about and you can talk about what you expect. you can let us know about all those things. we have been at this for about an hour, we will go two more hours without a guest today. a good thing about today is we have the ability to respond to some things viewers bring up during the course of -- host 3: hope you don't mind if i jump in -- linda was talking about the republican key pieces of evidence they put out in a memorandum from their staffigence committee
8:00 am
members and the evidence they say exonerates president trump in the impeachment inquiry. things like the july 25 call summary showing no conditionality or evidence of pressure. we talked about that a little bit earlier. as linda pointed out, democrats responding to that including the chairman of the intelligence committee, adam schiff. this was in an interview yesterday with npr. , this is what adam schiff said in that interview. shooting down several of the republican arguments defending present trumps -- president trump's conduct. it shows president trump directed u.s. security assistance and a white house meeting to be withheld from ukraine to leverage investigations into his political rival. it was eventually
8:01 am
released without an investigation is in relevant -- irrelevant. whether the president committed an impeachable offense, the fact that the scheme was uncovered and unsuccessful doesn't make it any less odious or impeachable. democrats have yet to decide whether to bring the articles impeachment. noting that investigators learn information all the time in the discussion whether to pursue articles will be held when we get to that point. that is from the rollcall wrap up today. listen in on your calls. four (202) 748-8000 democrats. (202) 748-8001 for republicans. .ndependence on (202) 748-8002 just put your name, city, state.
8:02 am
if you want to post on twitter or facebook. earlier today we had a chance to look at the longwood office building. the room that the impeachment hearing will take place. we are inside 1100 longwood office building. this is traditionally the ways and means committee room. today it will be for the house intelligence committee when they gather at 10:00 a.m. eastern time for the first public hearing. it is one of the more intricate hearing rooms here on capitol hill. it is also the largest. the media has been allowed into the room at 7:00 a.m. eastern time. all the networks coming up with to giveespondents their viewers a shot of the room and a feel for what it will be like today. they will need this large room.
8:03 am
according to foxnews they have reserved about 100 seats for the public. they will be physically located in and out throughout the hearing. 150 seats for the press and 100 seats for members not on the intelligence committee. if you're not on the intelligence committee, you cannot be sitting and you will have to trying get a seat behind the witness table. taylor witnesses, bill and george kent will be at the table behind me. that is where they will take the oath and they will deliver an opening statement as well. mr. taylor and mr. kent will look out from that table to see 13 democrats and nine republican lawmakers. sit schiff, the chair, will in the middle. to his right will be devin nunes , the top republican on the panel. on the committee for these hearings is jim jordan, top republican on the house oversight reform committee.
8:04 am
he was given a seat on the panel by republican leadership. willschiff and devin nunes be delivering opening statements as well today. the other committee members will not get that opportunity. they will each get five minutes. their five minutes is expected to come after they listen to what the committee has called extended questioning period. the chair and top republican will split the first 90 minutes of questioning. s arechiff and mr. nune expecting to give much of that time to committee lawyers. we expect them to be asking questions of the witnesses. for the democrats, their counsel is daniel goldman. the republicans have steve castor. there will be more of an extended questioning period as well. the hearing is expected to go until 4:00 p.m. eastern time. c-span has seven cameras
8:05 am
throughout the room to get all of the different angles of today's hearing. poolve been designated the as we often are. meaning that we will be sending out from the seven different cameras individual feeds to all of the networks. they will then decide how they show you the room. we will do that as well. you can watch our gavel-to-gavel coverage on interrupted. no filters at 10:00 a.m. on c-span3. -- host: our social media team will be sending out tweets during key moments of the day. we will have a section with the hearing, key highlights as we call them. after it is all done you could
8:06 am
see some of those key points of the hearing as it plays out today. all of that available to you as information if you go to our website at c-span.org. if you want to make yourself available to the inquiry box with all the information as it has played out as it has played out is put there so you can find it. illinois,o terry in republican line. thanks for waiting. caller: good morning. a coupleike to have things about the impeachment. one thing, why should we believe adam schiff when he says we are still waiting for the overwhelming evidence on the russians? mueller said candidate trump or no american citizen had anything to do with russia.
8:07 am
two, the people adam schiff was hiding in the basement testifying, none of them never talked with the president, never met with the president, their opinion is hts,ly feelings, thoug opinions. none of that is firsthand information. the two that met with the president and talked with the president, why can't one of them today?h the two so they can get the whole truth. they are the majority, which is true. you have to look back in history on the last three impeachments and they are run completely different than this one. this one here is a sham in my opinion.
8:08 am
there are so many lies already. constitution has the power of impeachment but the individual houses decide the process. --ler: it is another thing that is what the house has the power to do. you can see the american people, we agreed to process. the first few weeks the polls were going up in favor of the democrats. last week they dropped some. that is why they brought it out of the basement. host: will you be watching today? watching will be mostly the republicans. how they handle everything. another thing, -- host: why the republicans and how they handle things versus the democrats? have been watching the
8:09 am
democrats and their talking point with the media the last two weeks. right now it is quid pro quo or whatever you want to call it. now it is changing, corruption, extortion. they are saying the public is too stupid to understand. we understand that because we watch the former vice president he won't getself the money. president trump never said that in the transcript. host: let's hear from walter in california, independent line. gentlewoman who just spoke, my biggest point is we should all listen to both sides.
8:10 am
openly and listen to the attorneys. the people who are there to make the case. what they are doing now is completing an investigation. alleged conduct not of mr. biden's son but rather of donald trump. they are checking it out. it has nothing to do with the russians, i read the mueller report. it seems to prove there was begging of the russians by the trump campaign. quite possibly by mr. trump. people who said -- the last
8:11 am
independent line you took said she was a republican and her comments certainly seems to be republican. s arenk the independent owed another shot. -- i'm sorry terry that was walter. in new york.red i believe this in general is very morally dangerous. 44 people have been elected president. trump, when i found out he was elected i was frightened, terrified. host: since we are talking about the impeachment hearing, what do you expect? caller: i think whatever the
8:12 am
outcome could be it could change the united states forever. host: how so? make everybody think. it will help make people do the history and try and make a better future. host: that is some of the collars we have gotten during the course of this morning. if you want to make your voice known you could give us a call. if you want to post on our twitter feed, you could do so. if you want to post on your facebook page, do it on facebook.com/cspan2. a lot of information on c-span.org about today's proceeding. online can monitor it with social media, the rebroadcast, all of that available to you at c-span.org.
8:13 am
let's go to our next caller. i want to say first of all, c-span was causing confusion. the reality is c-span is the only source of what is actually going on. news, turn off cnn, turn off the opinion and entertainment news and start paying attention to c-span. this is the only way you will get all of the information. you have to listen to both sides. host: what are you expecting? caller: we pretty much already know what is going to happen. the democrats will try and convince everybody in america this quid pro quo conversation, the reason they changed it from quid pro quo to
8:14 am
extortion is because quid pro quo is not illegal. it might be unethical but it would not be impeachable for them to say there is a quid pro quo. you can't call that an impeachable offense. especially for when you are talking about world leaders. things that are very important to understand. ,irst of all, the whistleblower his attorney 10 days after the president was inaugurated tweeted that the coup had started. this is a problem. if this lawyer was in conversation with government officials, intelligence officers, anyone in the the time and political officials in a conversation of any kind, we are
8:15 am
talking about violations, potentially subversion of our government. if any of these government officials collaborated to try and look for things to impeach himp on to essentially coup , you have a really big problem. host: let's go to john mcardle. host 3: just wanted to dig in a little bit more on witnesses who will be at that table today who will appear starting at 10:00 a.m. about themt more including william taylor. the ukraine former ambassador to that country during the george w. bush administration. he served as a platoon leader during vietnam. a graduate of harvard's kennedy school of government. released, notably
8:16 am
him saying there was a separate foreign-policy channel read by rudy giuliani when it came to the ukraine. he was the order -- author of those text messages calling for any trade-off of investigations for military aid quote crazy. sitting next to william taylor today will be george kent. the current state department deputy of european and eurasian affairs. masters degree from the national defense university at johns hopkins. kent describes in his testimony that took place behind closed doors that was on october 11. he described it as a campaign of slander against the former u.s. ambassador to ukraine, marie yovanovitch. of course she is testifying on friday. those two men on the hot seat
8:17 am
today. one story about the state department officials testifying this week and about what may happen to them in the weeks and months to come, noting democrats on the senate floor sent a letter yesterday to key state department officials urging them to prevent any retaliation against the three state department employees testifying. we call on you to unequivocally support and protect the employees to your fullest ability including by issuing a statement of support and ensuring that they are not subject to any reprisal. that is from a robert menendez, the ranking member of the senate foreign relations committee. are inviting you and not secretary pompeo because his silence speaks volumes for him not standing up for his own people. despite their dedication to public service without regard to party, president, or power. here is john from
8:18 am
pennsylvania. no ahead. caller: [inaudible] there has been people indicted, it must be embarrassing. people hear the facts. host: how does that relate to today's impeachment hearing? caller: we will hear the facts, we will hear the truth. republicans need to open their eyes and ears. what you think they will hear differently than what has been reported from close testimony? statingsome of this that the republicans need to open their years. lifelongple are
8:19 am
servers of our country. that is all i have to say. host: give me a fact that republicans should listen to. testimonies, they keep saying they are shams and not truth. host: let's go to cleveland, independent line. talk about theto emphasis on the political divide. i think the emphasis of a political divide ignore something that is common between republican, democrats, and independents. what they have most of all in common is the protection act that is not being addressed. causing them to be dissatisfied with the political and legal systems. right -- ifve the
8:20 am
you have been the victim of a crime, you don't have the right to go to a grand jury to show your evidence. the public officials are not addressing crimes. crimesfferent kinds of have people dissatisfied with the political and legal system. host: let's go to urban in wichita, kansas. i'm dumbfounded as to rightme of us can't see from wrong. , it would makeme me wrong. i don't believe the united states is united. like this isting being run by some other entity. host: how does that relate to the hearing? caller: the fact that the
8:21 am
theident was wrong in all things people had claimed. no one can see that. the republicans don't seem to see that. host: give me an example from what you don't think they are seeing. when theor instance, president goes against the intelligence for a foreign entity, a foreign country. whatever that place is where the president had the private meeting with russians. host: how does that relate to the ukraine call? caller: the president had no business interfering in the country. let's face it, this country is not united.
8:22 am
it is under satan's authority. this is peter from california, democrats line. i would like to get out of the hearing, i would like to see the case for and against impeachment. that is the main thing i want to get. if trumpconcerned that made this quid pro quo, or what is to prevent other administrations from doing this? this is an extremely important issue. host: what will you be paying attention to most? i'm going to try to keep an open mind. listen to the
8:23 am
witnesses and also the questions the attorneys have. for both the republicans and the democrats. i'm a former republican. i changed to democrat. you say you want to keep an open mind you have no judgment on the president's role in this? opinion. have an on the face it looks pretty damaging to president trump. host: what do you think you will hear today that will sway you either way? not sure.m that is why want to listen. maybe there is something that that would to light
8:24 am
help trump. host: let's hear from michigan, republican line. caller: good morning. i find some of the things troubling about the impeachment inquiry. beginning from the lack of due process. this is the president elected by it shows this can be done to normal citizens. i think it is a very slippery slope to go down.
8:25 am
there are several things from the ukraine call -- the united states is not santa claus. we don't give millions and billions of dollars without stipulation. we have a right to inquire what our money will be used for. who are the players who are going to be distributing our funds? these funds are not free. nobody isthings that talking about like the ukraine treaty. the bill clinton treaty allowed -- host: go ahead. caller: it was reasonably allow the sharing of investigative information between countries that are receiving funds from our tax dollars. what are you expecting from republicans today? caller: hopefully defense.
8:26 am
biased.quiries are you have a person running the inquiries that is setting all of the rules. they are allowing people to speak to one person but not another. they are mandating how much time these people can be questioned. as long as adam schiff's liking what he hears, he will question people and a length determined by himself. that length of time will also be to republicans to question the same witness. whatever time he is given or not given his all the time that will be given to republicans to defend. host: lori in michigan talking about today's impeachment inquiry. 1100 longwood building is where you can find that. outside of the building you will

8:28 am
is adam schiff lied. -- the process is bad. only in communist countries you could have this process where nobody can defend themselves. the democrats are doing something that is illegal. they are lawmakers and they are breaking the law. they are making their own laws to suit themselves. -- they think we are stupid, that we don't know the law. we know the law. we know we have a right to defend ourselves. illegal immigrants have more due process than the president. that is what pisses me off. i don't think it is right.
8:29 am
the democrats did nothing. they started racism, racism failed. they dig and dig. anything this president does to help this country they turned around. last, thisd in the is not who we are. he did not do anything for us. host: that was andrew in west virginia. we have been at this for about an hour and a half, we have an hour and a half to go until we go to the house at 10:00 on the main channel of c-span. if you're interested in watching the hearing go to c-span3. we will be taking your calls during the course of the morning about this public hearing. you could text us, between us, a lot of ways you can give us your thoughts. let's go to john mcardle. host 3: today, here is one from the newest member of the house

intelligence committee, congressman james jordan -- jim jordan. he was appointed late last week, replacing congressman rick crawford on that committee. one of the public faces of republicans who have come out during the impeachment inquiry behind closed doors to talk about how he was able to do that because of his work on the oversight committee. one of those committees that was allowed to join in the closed-door impeachment inquiry. this is his comment today. as he gets ready for his first public comment. the calln saying transcript shows no leakage. the president and zelensky said there was no pressure. ukraine never took any action to get the aid released. if those points on familiar, those of the same key pieces of evidence that were pointed out in the republican memo that we

8:34 am
i heard you say several times that this is the way the rules are set. i watched the hearings on the and not one of the republican rules got past. this is a sham. it has always been a sham since day one. i believe every time they do this it causes more people to want to vote for donald trump. this is a part of the most unfair hearings that have ever been on c-span. office, ack obama was in we should've impeached him when he was tapping donald trump's office. nobody did. there's a lot of things going wrong right now. are wasting more
8:35 am
time with impeachment and not passing any laws. they are not doing any work. that is how i feel about it. most everybody here in georgia -- host: are you going to watch the hearing? caller: you all make it hard. c-span2 and i don't have a computer. i don't understand why you did c-span3. on one orve been two. our mission requires us when the house comes in at 10:00, we cover it on c-span. senate coverage on c-span2. a lot of ways you can do it. well.app is available as

8:39 am
interfered -- will it be interfered by other countries? host: how does that relate to the hearing today? caller: what relates to the hearing is the people that have been testifying in speaking up for the democracy of america, these are the same people like me in view, it doesn't matter who you are. who is going to defend us? our votes will be counted by the democracy and whether or not this president is following the rules about democracy, this is what is at stake. we don't need to be divided. who is going to defend us? will that be the democrats or the republicans?
8:40 am

republicans on the committee should do today? adder: things just don't up. you don't holler impeachment from day one and go after this man like they have. now they can't find anything but they keep going from one thing to another. i think that is so sad for this country. our forefathers would be absolutely ashamed for what they have done to this country. i love my country. it hurts me to see that. host: independent line in georgia, terry, good morning. caller: how are you doing today? host: fine, go ahead. believe the inquiry will give a lot of feelings and a lot of emotion. i understand we are all human beings and we do have feelings and emotions concerning different things. independentyself

8:46 am
as a servant of the people, are you to follow out the president and the people? or are you supposed to follow out certain policies you agree with? if they keep it simple i think this will come to nothing. i believe this is a loser for the democrats. trump has a lot to gain here. host: erica is next in minnesota. caller: i think to me, the biggest thing is in what world is it ok for any president to have a shadow foreign policy in place? several witnesses have already testified that they were surprised that a civilian,

that. all of a sudden, in 60 days we switch over and now we are talking about ukraine and trying to get donald trump on some phony deal. that is the point. where is adam schiff with his collusion deal? he didn't get it. the whole objective, the plan of rice, it was to try to get trump impeached right after the election because they could not believe he won the election. the rush of deal did not work so now they are using this to and get trump. this is like a russian oligarch trying to take down our president. host: will you watch the hearing? caller: i will watch the hearings but in 63 years of my life i have never seen such a sham. richard nixon did something wrong -- wrong.
8:49 am
bill clinton lied to the public. this man has no charges against him. who cares about what these witnesses said. they had nothing to do with it. trump turned in his paperwork of the phone call and they got nothing. they are still trying to impeach him because a couple of democrats have a mental disorder. host: let's go to conway, south carolina on the independent line. thank you for taking my call. aigner underestimate the aunts of the american voters. listening to some of your callers, it is very evident to me that none of them studied civics in high school and don't know very much about the constitution or our political system. they may need a refresher

she's viewers will recognize the four points they point to at the end of that op-ed. those have been the four key points republicans laid out in the memorandum that they released yesterday. theident trump released transcript. that quote showed no conditionality of evidence or pressure. trump and zelensky have said there was no pressure on the call. the republican memo pointing to ukraine not aware of the u.s. security assistance at the time. -- fact that the presidents they say both occurred without ukraine investigating president trump's political rival. most key points are what you will be hearing at republicans coming back to repeatedly today. obviously setting it up in the op-ed, tweets, as well. tweet for you from a democratic member of the committee, sean patrick maloney

the two witnesses, bill taylor and george can't will be seated at the table behind me to take opening and deliver an statement. they will look out from that table to see 13 democrats and nine republican lawmakers, adam schiff in the middle. to his right, devin nunes, the top republican. also on the committee is jim jordan, the top republican on the house oversight government reform committee and was given a seat on the panel. also, adam schiff and devin nunes, according to a memo, will be delivering opening statements as well. the other committee members will not get that opportunity, however they each get five minutes. there five minutes is expected callme after what they extended questioning.

engaged in wrongful activities, it is their duty to investigate. and if grounds are found, to impeach. host: republican line from kansas, maurice, good morning. caller: thanks for my call, first time caller and listener. i will be watching you more often because i like how you challenge the callers and ask why. first comment, the supreme court, the separation of powers has been broken. the executive branch was the state department. the state department doesn't run diddly. they take their orders from the president, period. they did it with everyone else. why is trump any different? most of the time, these people are ignorant and do not care that they are ignorant. they are spoonfed by whatever media, just like the caller
9:07 am
before me said, everyone is pointing fingers at each other. no one is looking at themselves in the mirror. when we look at the justice department, there is no justice. if there was justice, a lot of these people would be charged extortion, for treason, period. host: you have an ambassador testifying today, and a state department official testifying today, and that does not matter as far as what they bring to the table? caller: what these guys are testifying on, from what i am to understand, is the fact, their personal opinions, not any of the fact -- you take a look at our country throughout its history. we have used american dollars to influence other countries. everyone does it. it has been done.
9:08 am
it is part of the process. we want you to act a certain way . for example, terrorists. we want iran to act a certain youro we say, we limit ability to conduct business on the world setting. that is to get them to give up their nuclear weapons or whatever it might be. the question is, who runs the state department? who sets policy? under the constitution, the president of the united states sets policy. you think the president acted accordingly in the exchange with the ukrainian president? within he is completely his constitutional mandate as the president of the united states, under the constitution and powers of the executive branch, to run the country's affairs as he sees fit, not as
9:09 am
unelected government officials that do not have any kind of resource. when that ambassador was recalled from ukraine, it was because she was part of the problem and she was bad mouthing the president of the united states. and you are the representative of the united states, you cannot and should not ever go across the pond or wherever and badmouth the united states. like our president for this one went across the pond and blasted america because america has been so bad. host: only because we have to get to other callers, what are you expecting from republicans? that a lot ofct that are being spouted out by the mainstream becausell be shattered

there is no truth to this except for the fact of personal man who and bias for a has basically -- is basically a new yorker -- and i know a lot of and they are blowhards. they are trying to usurp the president and basically a paper coup. washington,in pennsylvania, independent line. caller: good morning, how are you? host: fine, how are you? caller: good. i called because of how many people are asserting the process is flawed and the president is being denied rights, when the reality is they do not understand the process. it is an investigative process, not a prosecutorial one, to decide whether charges should be filed against him for violating
9:11 am
constitutional responsibilities. if he is impeached, charges go to the senate for them to have a trial, at which time he will have rights of due process and rights to confront the people testifying against him. it concerns me people are making judgments about this process of the impeachment inquiry without completely understanding what it is. in regard to what is going on today and what they get to, i believe a president can ask another country to abide by conditions of an alliance we formed with them, and ukraine is our ally, but trump did not do that. he did not call them and say, here is what our agreement is, we agreed to protect them from russia, they are trying to take over your country, we will not let that happen, we will give you military aid congress designated. instead of that, he talked about his conspiracy theories
9:12 am
regarding the bidens, regarding the ukraine supposedly being involved in his election. i believe he knows russia was involved in a very large disinformation program when he was running, and they put out a lot of false information that people unfortunately believed. host: what are you hoping to get from the hearing? caller: i hope they get to the bottom of that, and people understand it is all of one part. unfortunately, he did get elected, but with russian-made, and the call to ukraine was again to get ukraine to defer to russia and agree that russia was not involved in his election, and agree to investigate the bidens and other people. i don't think he let evanovich go because she was bad mouthing him. i believe she was not corruptible. in milwaukee,

i am a seventh generation veteran who served in vietnam. my father served in vietnam and we have served in every war since the revolution, going back to the constitution. i have watched your show several times and have tried calling in, because one thing that saddens onis listening to callers all sides of the aisle, is the lack of education and literacy. i will try to be short. i have been on the other end. today is your opportunity to see and unbiased look into this hearing. this is a hearing, similar to way -- similar to an investigator coming before a grand jury to get an indictment. that is basically what the is,es, impeachment -- house

there is no consensus, no fact of a crime, which i think he would need that for impeachment. i think that is necessary and not an inference. the other thing i want to say is should staff contact the ukrainian ambassador prior to prep her for their inquiry, which should be illegal or at least is shady. host: that is carla. ,hat you will see at 10:00 opening statements from the chair adam schiff and the ranking member devin nunes. you will get opening statements from both of the witnesses. the first round of questions, 45 minutes per round, which the chair or ranking member could ask questions or choose a member of staff to ask questions. committee members getting a

nation of laws and not of men, and the law will prevail. i have faith in the system. i hope these hearings will bring out the truth and reestablish that rule of law and help everyone understand what is going on, and maybe realign these misaligned republicans who are already speculating turning their back on our nation in support of donald trump. if he breaks the law, they don't care, they will support him anyway. that is insanity. host: fred, auburn, new york, republican line. understand how ,his woman who just spoke even the president going against any law. adam schiff and his crew have been unconstitutional from the beginning.

they can even let the republicans have a witness. they have been enclosed hearings. the man has not even been charged. nixon and bill clinton were guilty before they were impeached and proven guilty. that has not even happened. because of the double standard, like this other fellow called, is exactly what is happening. they are insane with what they are doing. this man has done more to help this country in the past three years then we have seen in the past 30 years. i don't get it. he is a total patriotic man who wants his country to shine. he don't want it to be in a whole. -- hole. the only way for it to shine is to be the moral country it was meant to be. debbie ins hear from edmond, washington, democrats

this is not necessarily articles of impeachment, but more of an inquiry, finding out information and everyone should have access to that information. host: the information you have referenced, what is the most important bit worth paying attention to? caller: i don't think there needs to be a saying quid pro assistance congress approved withheld for any reasons that were not for national security? having rudy giuliani involved when he does not have clearance or a government official, having power to help ukraine out. jack in tucson, arizona. host: i want to note for our radio listeners that democratic members of the house intelligence committee have entered the room and taken their
