7:11 am
if it was a perfect call, there should be all kinds of supporting evidence they should be able to provide it to prove that, not just lawyers getting up and making speeches and everything. host: do you think if there were witnesses -- if allowing witnesses delayed the trial, at some point is that dangerous to that republicans certainly have been critical of? elections.ctions are people think this is a job they need to hang onto for dear life. you are there to represent the people, there to do a job they sickly as a civic duty and jury duty is no different.

and it was obvious after seeing -- excuse me,os the president's lawyers brought up and these are videos the democrats, the managers had, but they would not show the american public and for the last couple years, we have been hearing about deep state, deep state, deep state, neither one of us had any belief in the deep state until we found out thursday or friday last week that they found out two of the fisa warrants to came from dirty business in the fbi, that was already proven by the ig and i turned the tv on this morning is i see bernie sanders outpacing joe biden in iowa and new hampshire and i am thinking

if our party picks bernie sanders, a socialist, he is right on the verge of being a communist as far as i am concerned. i would never vote for that guy. i would vote for trump instead of voting for sanders. we are already $22 trillion in the hole. where do people think this money is coming from? all my kids are paying taxes up the yin-yang. they cannot get a break. they got a break in the last tax cut a little bit. every time it is take from the people who work. i thinkt of hand and this impeachment thing has gone on too long and let's get it over with and let the people in washington get back to some business and i would start with get back on the medical stuff also the aca, affordable care act.

7:45 am
submitted the manuscript notwithstanding our belief the manuscript contained no information that could be considered classified. restricted to career government officials and employees charged with responsibility for such reviews and that the contents of the manuscript would not be reviewed or disclosed to any person not involved in the process a copy of my letter is clear,d and it is regrettably, that the new york times article published yesterday the review process has been corrupted and the .nformation has been disclosed pinning the leak on that process.
7:46 am
it has been with the white house at least since december 30. it yesterday afternoon. host: that story started to come out sunday, midday. and everybodyt referencing the new york times, maggie have a minute and the findingion date we are ambassador bolton was shooting for, march 17. host: let's get back to calls and we will hear from clay in metairie. caller: good morning. i would like to make two brief points. i think the whole premise of this impeachment on president trump, the democrats concluded they could not beat trump legitimately in the fall
7:47 am
they decided to try and pick off some of the republican senators because in the final analysis, they know if president trump is reelected, which he probably will be and the republicans have a majority in ae senate, they will be position to nominate the third thatme court nominee and is what it is really all about, the supreme court nomination and the final point i would like to pelosi usurped the constitution when she called for impeachment. ascribednt can only be to buy the full vote of the house, which did not take place until much later on. it started off on an illegitimate basis.
7:48 am
host: gregory on the democrats line. caller: good morning. i have a few points i would like to make. as the trial began, every view theook an oath to evidence impartially and truthfully and yet anyone wanting the proceedings can see this is not the case. the republicans are vowing, instead, to side with the president, obeying his orders. the republican senators were told last week not to vote theyst the president or would be handed their heads on a platter. the republican lawyers are constantly saying the democrats are serving up a sham and circus . they should look in the mirror at themselves and know that in history, their names and their families names shall live in infamy.
7:49 am
a lot of talk about bolton, i also have something to say. truthful -- he should, as a private citizen, have it published. i think he could, i am not sure, right now. the publishers could do this overnight and bolton would become a hero and america certainly needs one now, a hero. host: one of the senators we see a lot of in the breaks in the senate, ted cruz from texas. z emerges as a key supporter of trump, no republican has been more active in defense of president trump then senator ted cruz. 4 years ago at this time thought he would be the one sitting in the white house. instead, he is in the senate newly reelected and deploying

know, $50 million of taxpayer money to do nothing? second, the whistleblower, who could have been and most likely was coached and really doesn't even exist if he does exist, he was coached to spy on the president's phone call and we are not ever going to find out if he exists or not. in the be tilted again democrats favor for witnesses. what is the deal with the bidens? we are not going to hear the story? host: we will hear from james on the republican line. caller: good morning. your caller made 1.i was going to say. the speaker of the house cannot stand up in a press conference and say this is an impeachment inquiry. the whole thing is illegitimate,

let's go to maggie in pittsburgh, go ahead with your comment. caller: good morning. the key point i would like to make is it is important everybody watch today and in the defense andresident the question will be did the house make their case because they are who has the burden. one topics i found interesting, one was burden sharing and the house said that was a late excuse from the president's team. even in the transcript, they referenced it as it relates to germany. there has been a lot said about 80's just a blanket the president team -- the president's team and lawyer said we are not going to help at all but then it turns out there was a letter and a reason for that.
7:59 am
that is the house did not even take the first important step of authorizing the inquiry and off by nancy pelosi's television. it was interesting the republicans quoted dr. fiona hill a couple of times. one time on the u.k. being corrupt. also, they quoted her that it did not just have to be a meeting in the white house, it could have been a meeting anywhere, even poland. you have to be discerning these days. i am not sure what i think about this until i hear it all. really, they just gave them sneakers versus javelin missiles that are going to blow up a russian tanks.
8:00 am
that it iseminder good to see the other side and to be discerning. host: 22 hours of testimony remaining. one of the managers remaining last week gave testimony, val demings, congresswoman from florida. she tweets, "the president went on television, admitted to impeachable offenses, and said he would do it again. the white house team cannot get around these basic facts." she talked on abc this week about the democrats call for witnesses. i think everybody who has been paying attention knows now that the president refused to cooperate in any way with the house's investigation. not only did he prevent current administration officials from testifying, but he presented former administration
8:01 am
officials from testifying and did not give one single document to help. now, for me, i think if you are innocent and you have witnesses that can support your innocence or documentation, you would freely be willing to hand that over. let me say this -- all of the senators have been taken their oath and sworn into office, but then they had to do impartial justice paired one thing i can say, i have been in the room with them all week this week for some pretty long days, and i know they are in their seats or listening. many of them are taking notes. i would expect them to do what they have taken an oath and sworn that they would do, and i am just not going to give up on the senate, and i am not going to draw any conclusions, although i know there is speculation about what they may or may not do. i am not going to draw any conclusions. my job is to present all of the facts and as much information as
8:02 am
we possibly can. and i will finally say this -- if they are interested in understanding the complete truth, they would be willing like others, every other trial in every other courtroom across this country -- because they are judges, by the way -- that they would want to hear from witnesses and see documentation. toif the senator refuses support for witnesses, will the bolton?bpoena john >> there is talk over the last few days about what is reasonable or makes common sense. i would expect that the senators would want to vote in favor of witnesses and supporting documentation. remember, this is about hearing the complete story. while the evidence we have is overwhelming, and the american people clearly know that now, if you want to hear the complete truth, the complete story about
8:03 am
what the president did or did not do, then you certainly want to hear from additional witnesses with direct knowledge, like chief of staff mulvaney, was tied yeah, the aid to the gnc server. you want to hear from john bolton the national security --isor, who at the time is classify this as a drug deal. [end video clip] host: the senate impeachment trial continuing today at 1:00 p.m. eastern. 2.ve coverage is on c-span we will hear about news on john bolton sen. booker:, pieces of which were leaked out to "the new york times," "the washington examiner" reporting democrats argue explosive details from the bolton book demand his impeachment testimony.

[bill laughs] caller: i really don't believe the republicans are as done as they sound. they know he is lying. they know it is garbage and it is wrong. but they support him and they like him and they are going to support him. they don't care what he does. the sad part is that right now they believe that this man is on their side, and there is going to, day of reckoning when they realize, it is going to come between him and them.

he is going to choose himself. they have to find out for themselves that sometimes you host: host: get what you elect. -- that sometimes you get what you elect. harry, you're up next. caller: first of all, my condolences to the kobe family. trump is the kind of guy who, when he is right, he loves to be right. to deny the witnesses, to deny bolton, newness, and all of ,hem, who can prove -- nunez and all of them, who can prove he is innocent, and he does and let them speak, i have to ask why. the thing that he released the transcripts, it was not a transcript, it was memos. but again, look at president trump. if he has the information that can prove himself innocent, he
8:11 am
will put it forth so he can prove that it is a witchhunt. obviously it is not really a -- my thingcause is, looking at trump again, if he is innocent as he says, he would gladly turn that over so face democrats, no good schumer come all this. but he has not proven that. all of these things, all we hear from him is it is the perfect call, this and that. ok, prove it. let bolton, let them all testify. he was the one that denied the people to testify. for the lame excuse of national security. i am quite sure that those professional people, they are not going to divulge information
8:12 am
that could be detrimental to the country. but pertaining to him, if he is innocent, i know him to be a type of person that, hey, look here, here are the facts. it is a witchhunt. here is all my evidence. he has not done that. as far as these people believing ask formocrats did not it, bolton come all of that. thedemocrats asked for all witnesses, evidence, and trump denied it. host: we will hear from pam next in lawrence, south carolina. caller: how are you doing? host: doing fine, thank you. caller: first off, i just want to go by the democratic playbook read whenever they do not get something they want, it comes out the leaks. exactly what transpired yesterday, a leak from bolton. how convenient.
8:13 am
comey is the same way. he leaked it. and they want to call this fair? i don't think so. and also, when they were trying to call these witnesses that they say can prove trump's innocence and all that, we also got to remember one thing. she had not even called for a vote before the house, that those were illegal. pam, on the leak of john bolton sen. booker:, do you think it is coincidentally echo guest: -- do you think it is, incidentally? -- do you think it is coincidental? caller: absolutely. any time they do not get what they want, they will make sure it is linked. host: so you think it is intentional, then. caller: absolutely. host: wilson, north carolina, democrats line. caller: good morning. thank you for taking my call.

8:19 am
pointing the finger squarely at them for a problem in the process for not keeping it confidential, as it is expected to be as they go through the review. host: the president was up late in the night tweeting about john bolton, including one this morning at 7:00 eastern. i want to hear the exact wording of the call between president trump and volodymyr zhukovskyy that has been locked away and dubs top-secret. there is nothing secret about that call. forget about the transcript. also, i want to hear not only from lev parnas and john bolton as witnesses, but if president trump is going to invoke executive privilege, i earnestly hope that chief justice john roberts will recess the theachment hearings and let depositions be taken by all of these pertinent witnesses. and finally, rudy giuliani, with his inflated ego, should also be before thetify impeachment hearings. become theto

according to the trial rules, there are going to be that 16 hours of senator's questions. senators will not be able to stand up and ask questions, they have to submit them through the chief justice. they will hear a lot more from the chief justice during those six -- though 16 hours. then come the key moments where there will be debate on whether to subpoena additional witnesses and documents, four hours of debate before a vote is taken. if 51 senators agreed to do that, there is another series of debates on which specific witnesses to hear from, which documents to subpoena, and we are expecting that to take place midweek this week, after the president's lawyers finish making their case on the senate floor. the pressid seem like for witnesses was one of the key topics over the weekend. many sunday shows, including senator james ike fern of
8:34 am
oklahoma, on abc's this week was asked about it. here's some of what he said. >> is the same reason they did not want to hear from the witnesses. they made an initial push to say would you come, they said yes, if you will subpoena us and go through the roots like a normal process, and the house that we are not going to do that. the house argument now -- it is an interesting argument. they are saying the president not only can be impeached in 70 days in the house, the fastest in history, but that the president should not have access to the court at any point in the trial, so the closing argan from adam schiff was, do not allow the president to be able to go to the court and argue these things. you were around during the ap -- during the clinton impeachment times per there's a process going back to the courts to be able to make decisions, get that decision made, and then you get it to the house. but the house did not want to do that. they want to move as fast as possible and now they want to slow down the trial as much as possible in the senate. it is an odd political strategy for them, more than a
8:35 am
fact-finding strategy. frankly, it looks like they are asking the senate to go search, seek out. that is not really the task of the senate. the task of the senate is to hear the trial. the house is the one that is gathering the information for impeachment, so we are acting on what they are sending us. >> the big difference in the clinton trial is that the witnesses were heard in the house, and they were called in the senate, and the white house did not completely stonewall the investigation. >> actually, you know the biggest difference with the clinton investigation, it was almost four years of special counsel per they sent over 18 boxes of information from the house over to the senate. it was a far cry from that to do just a few weeks of investigation and at this time, and the house this time, and to be able to send it to the senate. in the clinton trial, the senate was acting on call witnesses that called witnesses that the house had already called. you're right, it is a different process because the house did not do their homework this time and did not seem interested or they just wanted to get it done
8:36 am
by christmas and send it by the senate. then the first thing they said was don't do the trial like we did our hearings. do it totally different than we did because it will be fair if you do it differently than we did it. just an odd statement from them. host: senator langford yesterday. alex bolton covered the senate for many years. this is his piece in "the hill.com." "senate republicans face pivotal moment on impeachment witnesses. read the story on twitter. mark says this, there should be witnesses in the senate. biden sup a whistleblower, the ukraine president. the senate should give the same respect house gave republicans. take a from south carolina says, "let's hear from the whistleblower started the mess to begin, with what is being hidden." from chris in birmingham, alabama, even with the lev parnas and bolton information, senators are twisting themselves into pretzels trying to have their alternative fact from a false narrative.
8:37 am
we go to clarksville georgia next and hear from dominic. good morning. caller: yeah, hi. no matter what you think of president trump, i want to talk about the biden affair this is endemic of low-grade corruption that has existed in the world in past history, and it is going on in the world toay, from china to europe africa to all over the place. these people have been making suckers out of everybody for kind ofnd this privileged corruption, where there are all kinds of dears -- deals made with these people really has to stop. this is what ought to be borne out, whether this is a crime or not -- it stinks. we have got to stop this kind of low-grade corruption. of -- this thing still is bad. thank you. host: next up is tom on our democrats line in maryland.
8:38 am
thank you for taking my call. host: you bet. caller: what i don't understand is that everybody knows that the truth is going to come out, and it will be in books by bolton or books by these people that are trying to keep from testifying. if they don't get the witnesses in there and the truth comes out later after the man has been committed, then we look like fools. and i cannot believe the senators would set themselves up for this, because they have to know the truth will come out. it always does. thank you. host: here is anita coming next up on the independent line in imperial, missouri. hi there. some of today's callers have -- sound like they have degrees in the sham trump university, or donated to the trump charitable foundation where they -- where he used the money for himself.

richard nixon got caught up in the cover-up, and trump has gotten caught up in this cover-up, and also orchestrating the whole thing. nixon had the good sense to resign. trump needs to resign. the claims that he has done beneficial things for this country are outweighed by his harm. itput our government, trillion dollars further in debt with this tax cut to make us go broke and collapse. babyob creation is from boomers retiring, but he takes credit for bogus accompaniments. his pattern of corruption hasn't changed, and i think he should resign immediately. if he does not, we do need witnesses. we need documents. we need everything that we can possibly get to shine as much light on this so that people who are not seeing the truth see the truth. you think he should resign before the defense team has a chance to present his

case? moment again, as has been said many times, and as the tv thing on abc that you just put up showed, the complaint was about process, not about the fact. it was the process of, he was not getting a fair trial or this and that. he is getting it more fair than anything he has given to a lot of others. so, yes, i think he should be, by now, before any more harm comes to our country. host: going to annandale, virginia, next up. matt. caller: looking at the case the democrats sent over, they had plenty of evidence to send to the senate to say to president trump -- to say that president trump was using his office to benefit his campaign. that was not direct evidence

because i want you to think about what would happen if the democrats waited to subpoena, go to the courts to get these guys. it could be three or four months, to go through the whole court process and appeals process. then we are in the middle of may or june as the democratic candidate is selected and we are in the general election campaigns. then we are bringing forward the impeachment process, probably dragging on into the summer, in the middle of a general election campaign. i think that would be chaos, especially with the current persons in office. so i think the democrats were right to push this quickly so that we could do this before the general election, and decide is this evidence good? we should definitely have more witnesses if they have more evidence to green -- to bring, and i think john bolton does that. in terms of joe biden, definitely investigate him. as a democrat, i don't want somebody corrupt in office and they should look into it. it is easy for me to say that
8:42 am
the caller who previously said we have too much corruption in politics is correct. look at the trump family. they are hand-in-hand business and politics together, putting their hands in the till of government. i definitely think we should investigate the bidens, too. no host: host: problem with that. victoria,xt up, texas, on the republican line. hi, bob. caller: good morning, everybody. i am a trump supporter, but trump is going to lose. and i am going to tell all the democrats to calm down and take a deep breath because the illegal aliens in california are voting, and actually they are putting in city councils and everything else out there, illegals. that is the reason they want open borders or they are going to come over here and there will be somebody at each voting station to help them through
8:43 am
motor voter law gives you the right to vote, look at new york now. host: you don't have the law in texas, do you? caller: this is the best blooming governor we have had out here he is closely trying to follow it, but this is a serious problem. all of this impeachment is just a farce. i mean, look at mueller, or mueller, however you want to pronounce it. million, hundreds of subpoenas, thousands of investigations, and they have not found nothing, so this is just a farce. this is to take the eyes off the illegal aliens that are out here in this country and last year in
8:44 am
december, the government, our almost $300nt to billion to support them. and people do not get that. but don't worry about it. they are going to be voting and they are going to be voting hard. bob in texas with more on the reaction to the bolton book. what we know of it, what we have seen so far. haver: i tell you what we been looking for so far is to see how republican senators have thated to the revelations president trump told john bolton that the aid to ukraine specifically tied to investigations into the bidens, that is what we have been scouring as the news reports have come out this morning. it looks like we will find out together at least what a group of republican senators are saying about that and what they feel about it.
8:45 am
there is a news conference coming up at about 11:35 a.m. eastern on capitol hill. it will be a group of republican senators. langford, lindsey graham, all republican senators set to speak at 11:35, the news conference on capitol hill. jamie depree, capitol hill reported with cox media noting that popping up on the schedule this morning. so we will all find out together. the president in a series of tweets last night and this morning as well, reminding that this is the president's tweet just before we went on the air at 7:00 a.m., the democratic house never even asked john bolton to testify. it is up to them, not the senate. rudy giuliani figuring in quite a bit to the revelations in john bolton's upcoming book. rudy giuliani sending out this a tweetnclear if it is of lou dobbs or that he is sending it to lou dobbs. that tweet saying there is no way in the world president trump
8:46 am
would say this to john bolton. it is a same -- a shame a man will sacrifice his integrity to make a few bucks on a book. no wonder he composts so little that chic accomplished so little -- no wonder he accomplished so little as national security advisor. democrats certainly have been reacting since the headline popped up in the new york times yesterday. here's just a sampling of some of it. evening, osi yesterday ambassador bolton reportedly heard directly from trump that aid for ukraine was tied to political investigations. the refusal of the senate to call for other relative witnesses and documents is now even more indefensible. she wrote the choice is clear, our constitutional -- our constitution or a cover-up. using the term cover-up, which we have heard once again. democrats using that term if republicans do not call witnesses this is this murphy, saying, for months there just has not been any question about what happened. but republicans hung onto the
8:47 am
idea that if they kept trump's top people from testifying, that could plausibly deny that he was behind it all. the game is now up. there cover-up fell apart. bolton must testify. this is senator hirono, saying that by blocking bolton and other witnesses, after the new york bombshell, republican senators are complicit in rigging this impeachment trial. one last one, senator tina smith of minnesota saying that now don't we think it would be a good time to have john bolton as a witness. earlier today you mentioned the name of the book from john bolton, i don't know if you show the cover. the drudge report has an image of it. it has an oval shape. the same image that washington post reporters tweeted out as well. that is what we are hearing will be the cover of that book. that is two different news
8:48 am
organizations, tweeting that image out. host: when a publisher typically release what a book cover is going to look like in advance of a book like that? >> unclear. i could certainly find that out for you. we know the manuscript itself was submitted to the white house, and there is some dispute, at least among some on capitol hill about whether it was a rough draft or a final manuscript. so again, it is unclear if it was a rough draft, a cover, or a final cover. all of this sort of coming out yesterday. we are still trying to figure out things. host: you said it was submitted to the white house in december? >> on december 30, yes. ketchum, will go2net in idaho, and hear his thoughts on the independent line. caller: really hoping we see something from chief justice john roberts. you know, i think most people the legislative and
8:49 am
executive branches of the government are kind of broken right now and we could really use the third branch to step up thettle bit and maybe asserting of authority over some things here. i hope the supreme court can kinda help us out a little bit here. along ay can help trump little bit more with this situation. host: how do you think the courts would help him, ned? whenr: well, that is why the founding fathers were -- came up with impeachment, they made sure they had a representative of the third branch because they knew it was going to be a very divisive issue for the country. he is supposed to have powers to be able to get them
8:50 am
to, you know, if they cannot agree on a witness or something -- on that.e can we have barely heard from him. host: we appreciate that. stephanie up, jacksonville, florida, democrats line. caller: yes, good morning. i am very sad right now. i cannot believe what is going on in this country. donald trump is the most dishonest president we have ever had. he doesn't know the truth if it slapped him in the face. and the republicans, they are just going to continue to back in. i don't care what they hear. heneed to have john bolton needs to testify. and we need to have other witnesses. donald trump is going to repeat his lives, and the republicans will believe everything he said. even when they know he is
8:51 am
telling a lie. they will point out everybody else about life, and everybody else's deception, but they never point out that he lies implicitly. i think he should be impeached. republican senate will not do the right thing. these people get out -- please, people, get out and vote, and let's get rid of him. thank you and have a good day. host: next is kim on the republican line. she in pennsylvania. kim my main is point is the country is split. it is just a mess right now, and i don't understand how congress can take our right away. that is basically what they are doing. we have 11 months until we pick a new president, and we should have the vote, not the senate. i think it is kind of discussing that he writes a book and then refuses to go to the house. the other thing is, from what i
8:52 am
understand, the house is supposed to make the case, then it goes to the senate, and the democrats found a loophole that they do not have to go to court because there is a justice sitting in the court and he can rule right away. host: thanks, kim. reaction, susan from upstate new york. first the gop complained about the mueller investigation, taking over two years to come to a conclusion. now the gop is complaining that the impeachment inquiry only took 2.5 months. you cannot have it both ways. a tweet from stephen says, everything discussed so far is opinion. that's have a fully open trial. let's put this behind us with a trial. lynn from massachusetts -- i still say trump needs to come to the senate. he put under oath for 11 hours
8:53 am
just like hillary was. talking about the benghazi hearing. in sugarland, texas, on the impending line -- on the independent line, good morning. caller: friday i believe john said that when we called in if he was asked for some information that he would look it up, and i tried to search on the website, the website on impeachment, and i am looking for the letter that pelosi wrote to her congressional people on the whistleblower, and you don't have to read the whole letter. just read the part where she says it is the law. the law meaning that the whistleblower who is supposed to testify in front of the impeachment hearing by the house in front of shifty shift would him testify even though the republicans asked for him as a witness that is number one. i have three little things.
8:54 am
from zoe play the clip lofgren? she was on jake tapper this weekend, state of the union. if you go to blaze, you will find a clip right there, 37 seconds only, and it says basically this whole thing is about the election. she says that if we waited for two to three years, the issue would have been moot. the issue would not be moot -- whatever that word is -- i'm sorry -- the issue would be you could still impeach him if you got the information from the court three years later. so what they are basically saying, this whole issue is about the election coming up. so please, if you could play those two clips -- the last two things i would like to talk about is, i like to do a lot of research.
8:55 am
in the list of obama scandals, i greatout there is a website, gradien, and they list chronologically, from 2007 all the way up to when he left office, all clips from news articles, mainstream media. you will be amazed at the that was there in the obama administration. host: what is their definition of scandal. caller: i will give you one. obamacare, to me was a scandal, where he is telling the american public we are going to lower prescription drugs, when he was in bed with pharma and there is a big article from the sunlight foundation, nonpartisan organization. host: appreciate you pointing that out with the clips, tony. we try to pull out a range of things from the sunday shows.
8:56 am
we will try to find something for you by the end of the show. from yesterday, fox news sunday. john, do you want to weigh in here? >> i think the dear colleague letter he was referring to was one that nancy pelosi sent out just before the start of the impeachment trial, and january 10 is when it came out. you can find it on nancy pelosi's website. i appreciate the viewer pointing out that c-span.org/impeachment is where viewers can go to find all of these documents related to the impeachment trial, as well as clips and full gavel-to-gavel coverage. and a lot of the discussions we have had on "the washington journal." january 10, that dear colleague letter -- this is what the speaker sent out to all her congressional colleagues when it came to the issue of witnesses in a fair trial. it was the second paragraph saying the american people have clearly expressed their view
8:57 am
that we should have a fair trial with witnesses and documents. more than 70% of the american public stating that the president should allow the top aides to testify. peter mcconnell does not want to present witnesses to the -- leader mcconnell does not want to present witnesses to the american public. well onseen polling as this idea of whether the american public wants to hear additional witnesses, and the majority of those folks who do want to hear additional witnesses. host: thanks for that, john. tony reporting that -- the clips that we can bring into the program. it is an impossible job to get a range because our main job is to hear from you. as i was mentioning before john came in, fox news sunday yesterday featured chris wallace and alan dershowitz, who we will hear from reportedly today on the senate floor. here is part of their discussion yesterday. >> i want to talk about the
8:58 am
framers because you keep bringing them up. federalist 65, alexander hamilton, one of the framers, argues that a criminal offense is not essential to impeachment. that may put up what he says. "subjects of his jurisdiction are those offenses which proceed from the misconduct of public men or, in other words, from the abuse or violation of some public trust another founder, george mason, brought up a case of a former british official in india who had been accused of mismanagement. in either of these case -- in neither of these cases is there a specific mention of a criminal action. >> that was one of the elements introduced by the framers, and it was rejected by vote -- >> that was not true. george mason came up with high crimes and misdemeanors. to include things like
8:59 am
misconduct and abuse of power. >> no. >> talking specifically about the conduct. >> i will spend some time on the hamilton matter in my talk. when clinton was being impeached, people who opposed clinton's impeachment cited the same quote, as saying that shows you you have to narrow it, not broaden it. he was saying subject to the jurisdiction, namely high demand ,- high crimes, misdemeanors abuse of power -- hamilton was not trying to expand the criteria from a constitutional criteria. he was actually trying to contract it. arguing that in fact in addition to having crimes like treason and bribery, you have to show that it involves a breach of public trust. host: the senate trial resuming today, 1:00 p.m. eastern on c-span2. we would love to hear from you --

(202) 748-8000 four democrats. , (202) 748-8001. (202) 748-8002 for independents. joining us is niels laszewski. we showed alan dershowitz, one of the three attorneys we have not heard from, we will hear from him today on the senate floor. what is the direction the presidents legal team will take from here on out? what we expect the next set of arguments to be is over -- they will make some kind of substantive defense in terms of saying that the president did nothing wrong in their view on the merits. there is also going to be a constitutional argument made andt separation of powers the idea that the second charge in particular of obstruction of

face, nots, on its value. they will argue that the house managers should have gone to the courts to try and get subpoenas and documents and that the proper venue is somewhere other than in an impeachment trial. defense team on saturday, the legal counsel for the president on saturday has indicated that their team would not take the 24 hours allotted to them under the rules. any indication of how long they will take? have two session days left at their exposer. ist i think we will see maybe two days but they will be shorter days. i do not currently expect them to rest their case this evening. aty seem to be more adept
9:02 am
trying to make their case .hrough shorter soundbites the house managers certainly were. i would expect that they try and get into some prime time tv time tonight and tomorrow. maybe they don't just go on as long. release of excerpts of john bolton's book released by the publication from the new york times has upped the calls for witnesses on the democratic side. how would that come in the process? where would the senate take votes on that? guest: there are two pieces to it. after the president's legal team to 16ted its case of up hours of questions and answers, where senators will be submitting questions by writing, it will probably take two or three days to get to that. we are looking toward the end of this week, when the rules will make in order of motion to
9:03 am
debate whether or not to debate having witnesses, basically. and so, there will be this sort of first test vote on whether or not there need to be any witnesses or subpoenas or documents or anything like that. that is before they get into the specific question of whether or not john bolton or mick mulvaney or whoever would be on the witness list. that would be something to get approved by the senate. it would take 51 votes, correct? guest: that is correct. these are simple majority thresholds, up until the point of the actual potential vote on a conviction. that vote would be a super majority, two thirds. host: any cracks in the republican armor in the senate? guest: there do not seem to be. we have not heard from a lot of
9:04 am
republican senators yet today. a lot of people traveling back to washington after a couple of days. i am sure there will be lots of questions about the new york times report and the perspective content of ambassador bolton. heard from any of the key senators this morning. host: we have shown our audience some of the decorum and some of the restrictions placed on senators and the press. has any of that affected the work you do in covering the trial and comments from senators outside of the chamber? you for asking that. it certainly has. best to trydoing my reportersclear of the on the capital building.
9:05 am
it is difficult for us to do our work. i will throw in one other thing that will be interesting today with the house coming back into session. it is the first time that house members and their guests are going to run into security restrictions on the second floor . on friday, i saw a member of the house who was unable to bring visitors across the rotunda to the old senate chamber. they were stopped by police because they had visitors without special id. reporting is at ro .com oncom -- roll call twitter. we will get back to your calls, texts and tweets. we will hear next from raymond from lafayette, georgia, democrats line. caller: hello? host: you are on the air. caller: thank you, sir. i am not accustomed to this stuff. i have a couple of questions and
9:06 am
some remarks. i feel that if they are going to do an impeachment, the way try people here in the way you would be tried is a 12 min jury. why don't they do that with him? he is breaking a law. it doesn't matter who he is. he should be tried fairly. he is being tried by his peers. he has not been tried by the people. they are doing the job. not the people. they are. it host: you mean the members of congress are doing the job? caller: right. we decide whether or not he is guilty or not guilty. host: we will hear from john on
9:07 am
the republican line. caller: yes. i would like to talk about the truth. the democrats and republicans want the truth. the fact of the matter is, quid .ro quo works in politics like mick mulvaney said, if you don't have it, it will not go away. scratch my back to get something done. that's the way politics works. there would be no politician in office if it was not for this. next up is skip in kansas city, missouri. skip, hi. independent line. you are on the air. go ahead, skip. caller: yes, what i think the senate should do is avoid the personal truth and the political .ruth because those are skewed
9:08 am
concentrate on the objective truth. whether you believe it or not. host: skip, you still there? caller: yes. as far as the other day, when trump was in switzerland and the talk that he gave, he just dissolutions everybody in this country by its having them or wanting them to think that he is the person responsible for the economy and everything that is going on in this country. he is only one person. tell, this can economy is a spider web of wovenlick -- intricate tapestry that no one individual could possibly have any affect on it. host: we had a collar 20 minutes ago talking about one of the house managers. discussionot into a
9:09 am
-- discussion.o a i want to show you that exchange. what do you say to those who say that's what the house democrats did by not trying to go to court to force subpoenas and witnesses. guest: we did go to court. host: but you did not pursue the case. guest: we realized we had the evidence we were going to get and it was a decision to prove our case. >> didn't you surrender to the president? >> in that sense, we did. over.ection would be .he issue would be almost moot if he is committing a high crime and misdemeanor now and continuing to do it, we need to act.

the mcgann subpoena, we subpoenaed him last april and we will not get an answer on that until next year. host: your thoughts on the impeachment process and the trial resumed today at 1:00 p.m. eastern, live on c-span2. for democrats, (202) 748-8000. .epublicans, (202) 748-8001 and for independents, (202) 748-8002. other news, this is from our te survivors, auschwitz have earned 75 years since liberation. over 1.1 million jewish victims will be honored, 75 years after its liberation. number of dwindling holocaust survivors that will gather at the site.

go too calls we go, we peter from valley college, new york. republican line. caller: good morning. i would like to make a few comments on some of the things that were said this morning. of the callers called in and said that the obama administration reduced the debt. that's not true. to thent obama added national debt in his eight year term. trump beingesident this big liar, all politicians live. i will name a couple of the big lies president obama perpetrated. number one, if you like your doctor, you can keep your doctor. the average american will save $2800 on their health insurance. withenant erg doll served honor and distinction. said it was a film

, that it cause the uprising in benghazi. it was not true. certain flexor just -- certain facts are just waiting. i wish that you folks would -- when something is blatantly wrong, i wish he would correct callers when they make the statements. another thing, the lieutenant testified that the transcript was basically accurate. there was one small discrepancy that he cited in his testimony. that was corrected. so, for callers to come in and thethat the transcript that president gave was inaccurate is alive. -- a lie. you should have pierced talk about his new book. he devotes 70 pages to the bidens. host: he has been on the program. no doubt that it's some point --
9:13 am
at some point in the coming weeks, he will be again. jerry from michigan, democrat line. caller: hello? host: go ahead. caller: i would like to bring up a point that president trump aligns himself with dictators. what does that tell you about him? what does that tell you about him? nowhere in the history of the united states have we had a president that aligns himself with dictators. assblicans, get off your and get this guy out of office. goodbye. john.we hear next from >> i want to go over the schedule on a busy monday in washington, d.c. on capitol hill, things get underway for day six of the senate impeachment trial,
9:14 am
president trump at 1:00 p.m. eastern. you can watch gavel-to-gavel coverage on c-span2. the house is back this week as listeners pointed out. they will resume at 2:00 p.m. today. you can watch coverage of the house here on c-span. it is also a busy morning at the white house. here is the headlines from the newspaper, noting dueling meetings at the white house. the leaders of israel's two largest parties at the white house, president trump will host benjamin netanyahu at 11:00 a.m. then it, netanyahu's rival in the upcoming march election in israel. the newspaper noted that the meeting with netanyahu is scheduled to last over an hour. we are expecting benjamin
9:15 am
netanyahu to arrive at the white house at 11:00 a.m. this morning. you can look for coverage of that as well. weant to know on friday that pointed out before the impeachment trial began, there was an all senator briefing on the coronavirus. a senators meeting with health -- senators were meeting with health officials. the latest numbers from the outbreak in china, china's death cases.se to 80 confirmed it ballooned to more than 2700. those of the latest numbers. more than 40 cases have been confirmed in other countries, including five in the united states. u.s. senator's tweeting this morning and over the weekend about their concerns about the coronavirus. this was senator rick scott of florida, the republican saying we have to get serious about the

threat of coronavirus, asking the administration to declare a public health emergency. that echoed this morning by chuck schumer. the democratic minority leader in the senate, saying the threat to the american public remains low. health and human services should follow the cdc's product of lead and declare a public health emergency for the coronavirus. this will unlock millions of dollars to support the ongoing response and protect public health. that is some of what is happening on capitol hill today. host: thanks. the john bolton tidbits, the barely a few excerpts. peter baker with a piece published within the hour. news analysis with the headline, john bolton's account up in strom's denials. -- upends trump's denials. this ends the serious to closure -- disclosure on his political

career. new york, brian on the independent line. caller: good morning. host: good morning. caller: i think this whole thing is a farce. i watched all of the house thing. the first thing they did was change the rules. a lot of hearsay in there. on juries before and they don't allow that. the prosecutor and defense, when they start asking questions, -- host: when the members of this senate ask questions? caller: they start asking questions and it goes to the asks the the judge defense and prosecutors, do they have to be sworn in? host: they were sworn in ahead of time. caller: i am talking the defense

and prosecutor team. they are the ones answering the questions. will they be sworn in? host: to the best of my recollection, they were sworn in at the beginning of the proceedings. thanks for that. to william in louisburg, north carolina, go ahead. caller: good morning. i would like to say on the stuff with trump, it is my understanding and i am sure c-span will sit down and do a power out with your team in the days and weeks to find out what you will put on air and what is right and what is wrong. the team that president puts around him has the same things happening there. you might ask some dumb question about can we do this or do that. it is their job to be able to say no, mr. president, you
9:19 am
cannot do that and this is why. we are having an impeachment for asking a question that people will write in books to make a dollar. i have put much kept up with this stuff since the beginning. we have watched everything that y'all have played in little tidbits on everything but democrats have stood up and said. i have not heard anything from saturday, watching anybody come on with what was said saturday, in regards to the defense side. playld wish that you would a little more evenly. not to mention, i was called in on the republican line. a lot of dies -- a lot of days, the phone will ring and cut off in the phone will stop being picked up. no one ever puts you through the line. host: you got through.
9:20 am
yesterday, it was a short session on saturday. on this program yesterday, we played excerpts from saturday's proceedings. the proceedings get underway at 2:00 eastern with the president's defense team having some 22 hours left to present their case. jack is next. caller: how are you doing? host: fine. thank you. moscow mitch on this trial. out ande already come said he is innocent. what kind of trial are we going to have? are we going to have a monkey ?rial or a regular trial [coughing] excuse me. will people testify, witnesses? or are we going to have a monkey
9:21 am
trial of which is no witnesses. that happened in the south. they had monkey trials. host: jack, you're alive. -- you are live. the objective is to win reelection. the constitution of the united states has become a piece of paper. please america, vote democrat. the country's integrity is in great peril. roger tweets that the process was flawed from the beginning. never a houseboat. partisan was in contact with adam schiff's staff. democrats fluid. democrats would not accept what they had to say. stockton, california is next up. rob on the republican line. caller: good morning.
9:22 am
i have a couple of quick points. i hate to see everybody -- first basic law is everyone is innocent until proven guilty, beyond the shadow of doubt. it seems like all of your callers are calling in and even the house resenting the case is trying to reverse it. they are trying to say you have to prove your innocence. you do not have to prove you are innocent. you are innocent until proven guilty beyond a shadow of it out. i don't know why they think the president is any different than the basic laws of our land. he is innocent until proven -- the burden of proof is on the house to present the evidence of guilt of the president, which they have not done. pull oc and them did not -- nancy pelosi and them did not vote to impeach the president and then send out subpoenas. they sent out subpoenas before that so they broke the law. trump knows i do not have to give it to you because you did not do your procedures right.
9:23 am
that is the pinnacle point of this whole thing. there is no obstruction of have theif he did not proper procedures before they sent the subpoenas out. second thing, a big difference between nixon and trump. obama and his teams spied on the president through the fbi, russell still and all that garbage, gps simpson and them. they spied on the president. the president didn't not spy on anybody. the president did not spy on joe biden. he did not spy on anybody. if anybody should be impeached, the irs to goized down and start investigating and conservative nonprofit organizations several years ago, that never got impeached but it should have.
9:24 am
the result went right back to obama on that. host: all right. arnest in florida. caller: good morning. thank you for taking my call. secondly, not particularly in the order, i would like to send my condolences to the kobe --ant family and the passing passages in their devastating accident. enforcer and i have been watching the trials and i am baffled from a law enforcement perspective, how a -- a courtake place setting can take place where there is absolutely no witnesses or documents allowed. it brings me to question, how innocentoners, be it
9:25 am
or guilty, will be incarcerated today if fbi documents and witnesses were not allowed in court. it kind of baffles me. en suite mr. giuliani sent saying the president will not say this or that about a particular person. we watched the president on national tv looked directly at the camera and lie to us. and say he does not know this person or that person. we continue to see so many people in this circle being convicted and locked up as we speak. how weevastating to see will have a proper trial without document or witnesses. they do not want things to be done properly. host: i appreciate your perspective. more of your calls coming up. we have gotten some reaction to the john bolton news. john mcardle, you're hearing
9:26 am
some republican reaction. guest: there will be a lot of interest today in how republicans specifically react to the revelations in that manuscript that president trump told john bolton that aid to ukraine was tied to investigations. that is what john bolton had in his manuscript. that is what the new york times reported yesterday. here is jim jordan, one of the house republicans who is speaking on behalf of the president, part of his response team, his defense team. jim jordan was on fox news early this morning. the washington post keeping tabs on his imprints -- appearance. he said the revelations in the new york times does not change anything. here is a quote from his appearance on fox news. you have someone telling what his manuscript is going to say and that changes everything? i don't buy that. it does not change the facts that have been clear from the get-go.
9:27 am
