it is the democrats opportunity to present a vision they are unified. this is something the party has worked hard at. they did not want a repeat of , there6 convention where was a lot of commotion protests, bernie sanders supporters were upset. they wanted something very different this time around so it was an opportunity to showcase that. you will see that with bernie and making his case for joe biden. host: as well as michelle obama, we expect to hear from governor john kasich. guest: absolutely.
2:39 pm
right there that shows you the unity they are trying to present. you have john kasich on one side of the spectrum, former republican governor who ran for criticnt four years ago, of donald trump. he just came out and said he is backing joe biden. he will be on one end and bernie sanders on the other end. broad,to showcase that anti-trump coalition joe biden is trying to signal. host: is it the strength of the speakers that will accomplish that? especially the technological hurdles that have to be crossed this time around. guest: one of the things i will be looking out for is if they can pull this off technologically. it will be a serious hurdle. i think the fact it has been this is down so much --

going to be an event with multiple hours every day where you can cram in every elected official and labor leader, activist, ordinary citizen, whatever. now they only have two hours of primetime programming every night. you are only getting basically the top democrat and top anti-trump republican speaking. have the best speakers the joe biden campaign is offering. host: if that is the case, how does the other business of the convention get conducted especially in this atmosphere? guest: the typical business of the convention, for instance, voting on the party platform, writing the party platform, all of this that gets done before the convention is basically done.

2:42 pm
going to be held. it was going to be held in milwaukee which hillary clinton got a lot of flow back from not campaigning more in wisconsin were holding the convention in milwaukee. unfortunately for milwaukee, which was looking forward to millions of dollars in economic benefits as a result of this, is basically not seeing the convention at all. it is just a few wisconsin officials speaking. everyone else is kind of speaking from their respective home bases. speakingthe clintons from new york, bernie sanders speaking from vermont, joe biden and kamala harris will be speaking from delaware. these speeches are
2:43 pm
going to be taped. michelle obama for instance, her speech is taped. bill clinton's speech will be taped, bernie sanders had a taped, but will deliver it live and have a taped in case there is technical difficulties. that is going to present a challenge because it is not as exciting. tople will obviously be able tell the difference between a recorded speech and live speech. that is one of the challenges the democrats have. host: usually when we come to these types of events themes come out that each candidate wants to present over the course of four nights. do we know about the themes this time around? guest: the theme for tonight is we the people. matters, leadership wednesday more perfect union, and thursday america's promise. the main theme threading justghout all of these is
2:44 pm
unity. that is unifying the democratic party, and as we talked about unifying that brought anti-trump coalition that includes bernie sanders and john kasich. then unifying the country. joe biden is trying to present himself as a unifier in contrast to donald trump. that is one of the big themes we are going to see throughout the convention, at least the democrats are going to attempt to showcase. host: we will take calls with our guest holly otterbein. the first call is from john who is in philadelphia, democrat line. you are on with our guest. go ahead. caller: good morning. thank you for having me. i just wanted to talk about the convention tonight. are -- the next

2:46 pm
it is like we do not have a candidate who is really for we the people. host: holly otterbein, do you take anything from that? guest: john, hi from philadelphia. my homebase is in south philly. that is where the studio is. good to hear from another philadelphian. are you going to be watching the democratic convention? host: apologies. guest: is he already gone? host: yes. guest: that is one thing i would be curious at. he seemed upset at both parties. host: he said they are -- it seems this to our package makes it more palatable for viewing then in previous ones. guest: that is possible. the networks are going to be carrying an hour. that might be better for society with a short attention span. host: we will be covering from start to finish.
2:47 pm
dominic in new york, independent line. caller: good morning. what bothers me the most is the democrats want to play the race card. uaw a union man and the went on strike and got everything they asked for. trump did everything for the working people no matter what color you are. he did everything for the people. now they want to play the race card and not only that, they are making everybody angry. everybody is getting angry because everybody is brainwashingthem. the uaw got everything they asked for because trump wrought these companies back. would still have the uaw on strike. i do not like them playing the race card. host: holly, let me take a thought from him.
2:48 pm
how much do you think has already been expressed like black lives matter for the death of george floyd will appear this week? guest: i think they are definitely going to appear. that is the major part of joe biden's agenda. he says he is going to tackle racial injustice in this country partly through the economic recovery plan. kamala selected, harris who is the first south asian woman on the ticket. i think that is going to be a major issue throughout the democratic convention. while it sounds like the speaker is firmly in donald trump's camp, joe biden is trying to win over those former union democrats who switched to trumpet 2016. that is one of his goals. we will see messaging pro job,

per economic recovery, prounion. host: what do you think the involvement of alexandria ocasio-cortez, andrew yang, what do you think their inclusions mean sent to the democratic party? generational. is facesare two young, fresh in the democratic party in a party that nominated a candidate in his 70's. i think that is part of it. trying to signal this is a party for young people. also, although i think it is got better, at times pulling behind hillary clinton and latino voters. many democrats want to see more latino speakers than they
2:50 pm
currently have. -- manyia ocasio-cortez wanted to see more of that -- she is also there to persuade bernie sanders voters. the vast majority are behind joe biden, but there is a sliver that is not. i think she is there and bernie sanders is there to try and persuade those disgruntled voters, people upset their guy did not get it, to cast a ballot for joe biden. host: from california we hear from gerald, democrat line. caller: thank you, pedro. thank you, holly, for coming on. aoc.ust mentioned about the fact the dnc is only allowing her to speak for 60 seconds? how is that expressing unity?
2:51 pm
putting out the olive branch? i wondered if you had thoughts about that. guest: that is a question i have heard from a lot of progressives. that theave learned average speech is going to be two minutes long. this is because the democrats have had to cram hours and hours of programming into two hours each day. those speeches are going to be much shorter over all the what you are used to aside from the , and kamalabama's harris's speeches. bernie sanders will only get eight minutes. aoc --so told announcer: tom perez and .ennifer o'malley millan guest:
