to make an appearance? if you go to masslive.com, they have a piece this morning taking a look at some of the highlights from the events of yesterday, talking specifically about the former president, saying he has now spoken at 11 democratic national conventions but has never had a more tentative grasp on the party or a tighter window than he had on tuesday. that clinton was speaking at all was mildly surprising given how his sexual dalliances appear to some in the post-me too era. but the notoriously prolix president, whose 2012 speech for barack obama ran nearly 50 minutes, was kept to five minutes during the tight, all online convention, and he wasted no time scorching the man who defeated his wife in the 2016 election. you can see the whole speech still at c-span.org, but here's a portion from president bill clinton last night. >> with the covid-19 outbreak on a path to killing 200,00 people and destroying millions of jobs

and small businesses, how did donald trump respond? at first, he said the virus was under control and would soon disappear. when it didn't, he was on tv every day bragging on what a great job he was doing while our scientists waited to give us vital information. when he didn't like the expert advice he was given, he ignored it. only when covid exploded in even more states did he encourage people to wear masks. by then, many more were dying. when asked about the surge in deaths, he shrugged and said, it is what it is. did it have to be this way? no. covid hit us much harder than it had to. we have just 4% of the world's population but 25% of the covid cases. our unemployment rate is more than twice as high as south korea's, 2.5 times the united kingdom's, and more than three times japan's. donald trump says we are leading the world. well, we are the only major industrial economy to have its unemployment rate triple.

at a time like this, the oval office should be a command center. instead, it is a storm center with only chaos. just one thing never changes, his determination to deny responsibility and shift the blame. the buck never stops there. you have to decide whether to renew his contract or hire someone else. if you want a president who defines the job as spending hours a day watching tv, zapping people on social media, he is your man. denying, distracting, and demeaning works great if you are trying to entertain or inflame, but in a real crisis it collapses like a house of cards. covid does not respond to any of that. to beat it, you have got to go to work and deal with the facts. our party is united in offering you a very different choice, a go-to-work president. a down to earth, get the job done guy. a man with a mission to take responsibility, not shift the

blame. concentrate, not distract. unite, not divide. our choice is joe biden. host: just a portion from last night. you can still see the whole speech at c-span.org. for this first hour, we'll get your thoughts on the events of day two, night two, of activities. (202) 748-8000 if you support joe biden. (202) 748-8001 if you support president trump. if you are undecided, (202) 748-8002. we'll start with cindy in connecticut, a supporter of president trump. you are first up. good morning. caller: good morning. thanks for the show. i thought it was a lot better than the first night. it was well done. i mean, i like joe biden, i just don't like the people around him. i don't like all the revisionist thinking, trump was in denial. yes, he does say a lot of stupid stuff. he shoots himself in the foot a lot and makes things worse. i do agree with all that, but to
12:00 pm
say he was in denial when he was one of the first ones to do it, i think we are forgetting what happens or want to forget what really happened. we are forgetting the hospitals he set up in new york, unused beds for the seniors. there is a lot of blame to go around. i just think an act of god is beyond our control with this virus. we can't control everything as much as we would like to think we can. i really hate to blame. there is a lot of blame to go around. everybody has made mistakes with this pandemic. that's my comment. host: cindy in connecticut. we'll go to mike in south carolina, supporter of joe biden. caller: i am a supporter of the democratic party and since he is our candidate, i am a supporter of joe biden. i am more in support of the

change, a change, and this is the way we get a change. we need somebody who understands what it means to be a leader of this country. it isn't currying favor with the chosen few. it isn't a lot of the divisiveness that he seeks with his words. it is someone who understands they represent all of us, regardless of our political party affiliation, and that is what he works for. host: if i may ask, were you a supporter of joe biden early on? caller: i did support someone else, amy klobuchar, because she is one who would bring people together definitely. when the choice came down to joe biden, i know what joe biden has
12:02 pm
done in the past. some things i agree with, some things i don't, but i think he is the one -- he does understand what a leader's role is, and i think he can fit in that role. host: what did you make of his vice presidential choice? caller: i wasn't a strong supporter of kamala harris. i would have preferred val demings, maybe amy klobuchar. i understand why he selected her and i think the two of them will do a job. they will bring the change we need. host: karen in alabaster, alabama, supporter of president trump. caller: how are you? host: i am well. thanks for asking. caller: i didn't watch all of it.

i watched a good portion of it, and i still have not heard their agenda even though we heard little snippets of it from bernie sanders. i am sure joe biden is a very likable guy, but what they are going to do is they are going to have the government take over all the jails, all of our health care. the government is going to take over basically everything, free school tuition. it is not free, though. we the taxpayers will pay for it , and how will they do that? they will increase our taxes? everybody keeps using sweden as an example. go check it out. most people pay 70% of their income for taxes for all of that "free stuff." democrats will typically tell you what you want to hear to get elected and then do what they

want. i do not know if you had a chance to check out the platform for the democratic national convention. it probably lays out in more detail what they are thinking about. caller: i have not read it, but i have heard snippets. listen to bernie sanders. that is what they are going to do. host: that is. in alabama. the dnc platform at the website for the democratic national convention, there is the draft of it, laying out policy positions of the party as it currently stands. if you want to check it out yourself, you can do that there. from milwaukee, wisconsin, yvonne, supporter of joe biden -- >> we are going to leave this washington journal segment here. you can finish watching it at our website, c-span.org. we are going to take you live to remarks from dr. anthony fauci, expected to discuss the pandemic at an event hosted by george washington university.
