caption content and accuracy. visit ncicap.org] >> steven mnuchin stopped to talk with reporters and answered questions on negotiations among the administration, republic it's -- republicans, and democrats on funding the federal government and covid relief and an economic stimulus package. >> you have a couple minutes? thank you. how are you? it is a beautiful day. why don't we start with you? >> at this point in the negotiations, why the president won't personally speak with speaker pelosi? --did not go well [inaudible] sec. mnuchin: i don't think it is a question of he will or won't meet the right i have been negotiating, i have done six or seven deals with the speaker. senator schumer among mitch

mcconnell, the president, kevin mccarthy are involved in every decision. we have a process that is working well. >> what are the republican priorities for avoiding the shutdown? sec. mnuchin: the speaker and i have agreed that neither one of us want a government shutdown. i have spoken to the president and kevin as well. we are going to move forward with a clean cr, hopefully through the beginning of december, the staff of the four corners are working on that, so i hope by the end of the week, we will have something. >> you are calling it targeted. specifically -- sec. mnuchin: the cr, we are having a separate discussion. until that legislation, i spoke with speaker pelosi, she thinks we are far apart. i suggested we sit down.

maxine waters actually suggested i call the speaker, so why was encouraged and i did that. i am prepared to sit down with her any time to negotiate, no conditions. right now, she won't do that unless we make a large commitment upfront and the republicans are going to move with a more targeted bill that is focused on kids and jobs, which are the priority. the good news is the unemployment has come way down, we are at 8.4%. let's spend more money now, if we need more money afterwards, we will do it again. >> bill there be any coronavirus relief legislation inside a stimulus? sec. mnuchin: our plan is to keep the coronavirus discussion separates. be a skinny detail that does not address those issues. there may be one or two like the state, department, where certain fees are less than they are. i don't really call that coronavirus related.

>> [inaudible] sec. mnuchin: i have not. , i have been with the president many times at military institutions. the president has always been supportive of the military, he came into office campaigning on rebuilding the military. i have been to arlington with him, i went with him to the anniversary of world war ii in europe, very emotional times, been with him to launch the gerald ford, so i have never seen a more supportive president of the military. thank you, everybody. >> congress is about to return from summer recess with the senate back in session this tuesday. they will take up a number of judicial nominations starting with a judge for the eastern district of wisconsin, that is tuesday at 3:00 eastern. the house returns the following week with work expected on condemning anti-asian bias
