in this country. host: that is brian fallon with the group demand justice. demandjustice.org is the website. thanks for appearing on the program today. guest: thank you so much for having me. host: this is jessica anderson. she is the executive director for heritage action for america. talk about the role her group will play. thanks for joining us. guest: thanks for having me. host: a little bit about your group. are you associated with the heritage foundation? guest: we are the grassroots arm of the heritage foundation. host: is independent from the foundation? how are you find it? guest: we are independent and independently funded. we can do more advocacy work, as well as grassroots work in the field across the country. we are funded by a myriad of small dollar donors that want to see conservative values and principles advocated for here in washington. host: i imagine part of that
10:33 am
advocacy will be the fall election. what specifically do you envision your role-playing? guest: heritage action is committed to advancing conservative policies on the ground. we have been active in april 1 -- since april 1 in battleground states, talking directly with swing voters about the issues they care about. whato reopen the economy, economic and recovery looks like. skills training, job and wage satisfaction. all of that is front of mind for these swing voters. we have talked to nearly 3 million across this country. we have told them, if you want to advocate and advance conservative policy here in washington, you have to vote your values and remember that when you go into the voting booth. host: go ahead and finish. guest: we have been focused on
10:34 am
that since april 1. i think we have seen a hunger for the american people to talk about the issues and get past some of the personalities. host: when you say swing voters, do you mean? guest: we spent all of 2019 doing pretty robust polling across the country in both battleground states, as well as at the local congressional level. measure swing voters based on their propensity or likelihood to vote in the upcoming election. then specifically how they rate and value different policy issues. all of that then makes up a big data model that identifies where we should go and who we should talk to across the country. conversations, what responses are you kidding about the gentleman in question? guest: swing voters are very smart and they are in tune to the personalities, but they also recognize that policy drives the day.
10:35 am
many swing voters may not like president trump, they do not trust resident item. that is coming out very clearly, especially when you look at the issue of safety and security. four out of five swing voters support the police, support law enforcement, and want to see safety and security returned to our streets. when we have a conversation at the door, we realize this is top of mind for their swing voters. yes it is economic recovery, and it is also a safety and security issue. thosewhat response for that are involved in this project of yours gives when it comes to security issues you describe, not only that of president trump, joe biden? -- the model looks at ways to uphold law & order at the local level. one of the ways we pay for it when we are talking to these voters is, has your elected official committed to supporting law enforcement? have they made a commitment to
10:36 am
uphold the rule of law and law and order in our communities? those electedt officials at the local, state, and federal level that have signed heritage action's police pledge. this is a very simple pledge. it says law enforcement has a righteous job in this country, and for them to do their job they need to be allowed to provide safety and security at the most local level. we have everything from state and local officials that have signed this pledge, to members of the house. just over a dozen senators. this pledgee opened for citizens, for americans to sign, we have nearly 70,000 citizens who have made the same commitment of seeking law & order, safety and security, and pushing back against a lot of the chaos and anarchy we are seeing. host: how would you characterize president trump and joe biden when it comes to those security issues? how would you characterize their policies? guest: the concern i have with
10:37 am
mr. biden is that he has been very clear that he is comfortable with reimagining or retooling the police. that is a very concerning policy position to take. obviously his running mate has gone even further in her comments. while we saw some of biden's neck tracking this week of saying, actually might support the police or i could be comfortable with them, we know he is going to be beholden to the furthest liberal wing of his party. fullook at aoc and her throated endorsement of the defund the police movement, that is concerning andy should concern swing voters. because it really wrecks the community level we have for safety and security and the reliance we have on law enforcement to keep us safe. you contrast that with president trump, who has offered the national guard to go into states, to quell the violence. he is providing resources. he is providing extensive,
10:38 am
extensive policy work and financial resources through dhs to get into states, to restore that law and order, working with those governors that will have him. you have a very clear contrast between someone that is a robust support of law enforcement versus someone that is open to the conversation of reimagining or tooling the police. joe biden'se seen campaign say part of their efforts would be 300 million dollars for community policing efforts, even though you may not support the person is that something you can sign on to? guest: i think the biggest -- bigger question is, can voters sign on to that? the voters we are talking to are not interested community activist answering the phone when they down 911. they want to know that a law enforcement officer in uniform is going to arrive to take care of their family and assess any threat or danger in their household. those sorts of statements i
10:39 am
think we will see in the next 50 days from both president trump and mr. biden are going to reflect, what is their plan for law enforcement? what is their plan to restore law and order? anything short of supporting the police in the way that those who have signed our pledge have done, i think it's going to be concerning to swing voters. host: jessica is the executive director for heritage action for america. if you want to ask her a question, (202) 748-8000 if you support joe biden. (202) 748-8001 if you support president trump. if you are undecided or support others, and call us at (202) 748-8002. ms. henderson, it was just last week when joe biden was in pittsburgh. he talked about these issues of violence and brought up these matters. i want to play you a portion of what he said and we will get a response. >> simple truth is, donald trump failed to protect america.
10:40 am
so now, he is trying to scare america. since donald trump and mike pence cannot run on their record , that is seen more american deaths to this virus than the nation suffered in every war since korea combined. since they came out on their economy, just see more people lose their jobs than any time since the great depression. since they cannot run on a simple proposition of sending our children safety -- safely back to school. as they have no agenda or vision for a second term. trump and pence are running on this and i find it fascinating. "he will not be safe in joe biden's america." what is there proof? the violence we are seeing in donald trump's america. these are not images of some imagined joe biden america. these are images of donald trump's america, today.
10:41 am
he keeps telling you, if only he was president it wouldn't happen. if he was president, he keeps telling us he was president he would feel safe. well, he is president, whether he knows it or not. and it is happening. it is getting worse, and you know why. because donald trump adds fuel to every fire. because he refuses to even knowledge that there is a racial justice problem in america. because he won't stand up to any form of violence. he's got no problem with right-wing militia, white supremacist, and vigilantes with assault weapons. all of them better armed than the police. often in the middle of the .iolence and because tens of millions of americans simply do not trust this president to respect their rights to hear their concerns or to protect them. it doesn't have to be this way. host: as far as the characterizations go, what would
10:42 am
be your response? guest: there is a number of statements within mr. biden's comments that are fundamentally false. first, he look at the cities that are overcome with the anarchy and chaos right now, he looked up portland, seattle, chicago. you even look at cities like austin that are taking measures to defund the police, and you know those are cities run by democrats. that is a -- you can't argue with the fact of their partisan makeup. the reality is, you have democrat-controlled cities and thees that are allowing anarchy, allowing the chaos, the lawlessness to go so far past a peaceful protest that it is laughable. it really shows just the hypocrisy of the moment. you have on one hand, governors saying, let's keep these states locked down, let's not allow children to return to schools. the amount the flip screen --
10:43 am
then on the flip screen you have violent protests and riots and looting going on night after night and you see the hypocrisy play out. for biden to blame that on president trump i think is a mistake. he really should be turning to his democratic colleagues and encouraging them to step in to allow law enforcement to do their job and fight back and quell this violence. on the coronavirus comments mr. biden is making, i think it is interesting, the different tones our healthght for and economic security around covid-19 has taken, really sense -- >> the uaw takes our protocols and the health and safety of our members. seriously. mr. vice president, the uaw has led the way in the manufacturing and dealing with the very safetyl issues and
