charges against the conspiracy of russian military intelligence officers. who stand accused of conducting the most disruptive and destructive series of computer attacks ever attributed to a single group. i am joined by the fbi deputy director, the u.s. attorney for the western district of pennsylvania, and by the special agent in charge of the pittsburgh field office. alone,past three years the department has charged computer intrusions or taken related to the activity of china, iran, and north korea. each of these cases charge significant malicious conduct that we have called out in part to reinforce norms of responsible nationstate behavior in cyberspace. as this case shows, no country has weaponized its cyber

capabilities as maliciously and irresponsibly as russia. wantonly causing unprecedented collateral damage to pursue small tactical advantages. the defendants in this case were all members of the military unit 74455 of the russian main intelligence directorate known gru.e gre you -- as the the same unit known to cyber researchers as the sand worm team for their role in russia's efforts to interfere with the 2016 elections. we make no election interference allegations here. today's charges illustrate how activitieselection were about one part of the work of a persistent, sophisticated hacking group sabotaging perceived enemies or detractors

athletes. during the opening ceremony they launch the olympic destroyer malware which deleted data from thousands of computers supporting the game, rendering them inoperable. though the conspirators took attack on north korea, this failed. cyber researchers attributed the attack to the sand worm team, as we do today. the destructive and disruptive malware attacks and related preparations were not the conspirators only malicious conduct alleged in the indictment. the conspirators supported hack and leak campaigns leading up to the french elections and continue their disrupting attacks as recently as october 19, targeting government and nongovernment websites in the country of georgia. today's allegations in their entirety provide a useful lens for evaluating russia's offer two weeks ago for a reset in

cyber relations between russia and the united states. thata is right technologically sophisticated nations who aspire to lead have a special responsibility to secure the world order and contribute to widely accepted norms, peace, and security. that is what we are doing here today. this indictment lays bare russia's use of its cyber capabilities to destabilize and interfere with the domestic and economic system of other countries providing a cold reminder of why it's proposal is nothing more than son -- more than dishonest rhetoric and cheap propaganda. before i wrap up my remarks i would like to thank the team of prosecutors and fbi agent's whose pressure variance has led to these charges and the kind of evidence we can use to prove these charges in open court. i would like to express the departments appreciation for assistance from the private facebook,ch as cisco,
