but because they have their own money, they can be there from generation to generation. sarah horowitz tonight on afterwards on book tv on c-span2. you can also listen to every afterwards program as a podcast. find it where you get your podcasts. >> next from the recent cpac conference, north carolina representatives madison cawthorn, ted budd, and virginia foxx look at education reform. leading off the station is the state's governor mark robinson. [applause] >> where am i standing? i guess i'm standing here in the middle. thank you all for being here. thank you for that wonderful greeting.
6:05 pm
the series of speeches you are about to hear are about education and particularly education as it pertains to north carolina because of the three people you will hear from our congress people from north carolina. i want you to listen carefully. as you heard, i'm the lieutenant governor of north carolina and i sit on the state school board. all of you conservatives out there that are listening to me right now, i want you to hear something. if there's anything conservative needs to tackle in this nation, not just in north carolina, but across the nation, we need to wrestle the education system away from these leftists who have turned it into their own personal playground and are using it for political means to fix the minds of our youth. we need to find it on every front. our office is currently fighting it from the social studies standards they politicized to the indoctrination we see in our
6:06 pm
classrooms across the state. we are not going to take this anymore. education is for education, not indoctrination. we need to get involved with school boards. we need to get involved with city councils. we need to make sure the school board meeting on monday is as packed as the football stadium on friday night. if we do that, we can make some real changes in our communities. that's where it starts. so i encourage you all. take notes if you have to. but when you go back to your communities, get involved in education. it touches every aspect of american life. absolutely every aspect of american life my. name is mark robinson, i'm lieutenant governor of north carolina. i am pleased to be here. i would like to now welcome to the stage madison cawthorn, 11th district chairman congressman
6:07 pm
from north carolina. thank you all. we appreciate you. >> hello, everybody. so good to be here. . so honored to be with normal americans. washington, d.c., these globalists who want to indoctrinate our children and remove our moral foundation from the next generation, they want to make a generation completely reliant on the government. when i'm around them in washington, i feel like we are at battle at all time. it's not just against flesh and blood. you can feel the tension. when i got to come down to orlando and see real americans who care about this country, it
6:08 pm
does my heart good. thank you for that. i want to really talk about what's going on in our nation. i think what's happening is they are trying to destroy our nuclear family. they are trying to destroy what made america great for so long. the fact that we were founded on judeo-christian values. i'm excited to be a dad. i just got married. everything's going great in my life. because of that, i'm starting to think about having children. my wife and i are having that conversation. is it going to be two years or three years? something about that makes me feel completed as a man and a soon-to-be father one day. i feel like there is something that makes me want to do as we are called for in the bible and
6:09 pm
multiply. when i think about raising my children, i want to provide for them, give them shelter, give them sustenance. but when i think about this, i want them to learn to be independent. because of that, i will let my child push the boundaries. maybe he's reaching for a limb which is a little too far and might experience what it's like to fall out of a tree or take a tumble on a playground that hurts a little bit. the fact that he will learn what failure is. but when my child starts to experience this extreme difficulty and realizes he is in pain, what is he going to do? he's going to cry out. and as a father, i will want to come to his aid and fix all these problems for him and put him in a safe and sheltered area. that's the role of a father and the role of a mother. but my friends, that is not the
6:10 pm
role of our government. our government right now is trying to buy votes in their desperate scramble to have nothing but complete power. they are promising medicare for all. they are promising free things left and right and promising to forgive student loans. the problem i have with this is that it's intellectually dishonest. they are trying to think americans are two common or too naive to know that in the end, we have to foot the bill and it is my generation that will have to foot the bill for this debt and pay these taxes, people wanting to give away free tuition. people wanting to try and buy votes. i believe in this country, we should push back on that.
6:11 pm
we have to realize that when the government tries to raise us up, if you have a government strong enough to fix all of your problems and heal all of your woes, then you have a government that is strong enough to take away all of your liberties. and as conservatives, it is our mandate to limit that power of government and make sure our liberties stay intact. let me tell you. when i look at what's going on in this country. when i see that they are trying to silence us, trying to take our rights away, trying to make us become dependent on the government and trying indoctrination camps of schools. the way they are trying to do this is saying they want to get rid of all of our student loans. but at the end of the day, what's going to happen is people who didn't even go to college, young men and women who became
6:12 pm
welders or linemen on power lines or hvac repairman or people who already paid for student loans now have to take care of the fiscal student loans of another person. i realize, in my mind, i believe we always take note that they do not want us to be responsible. they don't want us to take responsibility for the direction our country is going in. my friends, the direction our country is going and we know is dangerous. we are walking down a road that is near socialism. they are trying to turn this country into a communist ash heap. if we don't all start taking personal responsibility for our lives, if we don't say this next generation of young conservatives coming up, it's not enough, we will not just take on the status quo and sit here and say i will patiently wait for my time to make a difference in washington or in my state government. if we do that, if we sit on the
6:13 pm
sidelines, we will not have a country to a area. if we do not get involved in a it is our duty to make sure our entry is responsible, our country doesn't take away our liberties, then we will lose this nation. my encouragement 12 us here is as young conservatives, this new generation, it is time to take responsibility. i need reinforcement in washington, d.c. my opponents and adversaries on the other are brutal and vicious and trying to take away all of our right and they are playing for keeps. my friends, it is time for us to stand up and no longer say we are just going to react with the democrats to and when they tried to do all these major spending bills and spent $1.9 billion, the conservative idea is we will just give you our own version of the liberal ideas that cost a little less. that's not where we are as
6:14 pm
conservative. i'm not going to come up here and promise you free three -- free things. as conservatives in government, we believe we will offer you some that is immeasurably more valuable and that is your freedom. the freedom to sit down. we have that freedom right now. it is time for us to no longer sit -- whether it's free education are the environment or gun rights, this new generation, we want to run the whole table. because my friend, what we are offering the american people's liberty and choice where you can go out and do whatever you want. maybe we are not going to
6:15 pm
encourage you to get a four year degree in egyptology, but rather we will encourage you to get an education in a trade, something that makes our economy more powerful. when you hear the democrats trying to buy your votes and acting like you are too naive to know what's going on, push back on that. take personal responsibility for your life. if we don't stand up, if we don't start fighting for our country, who will? thank you. [applause] >> ladies and gentlemen, please
6:16 pm
welcome letter representative -- representative ted budd. >> you know, this cpac stage has been graced by legendary americans over the years. you think about the late rush limbaugh. his father famously instilled in his son a deep love of america through a speech about the event of july 4, 1776 and it was titled the americans who risked everything. his dad wrote the 56 signers of the american -- decoration of independence, they could make the most magnificent curtain line in history and that he codes, "we mutually pledged to
6:17 pm
each other our lives, our fortunes, and our sacred honor." you would think teaching our children about the fundamental goodness of our land like his father did, that it wouldn't be controversial. but for the far left, it is. they have a radically different view of our country epitomized by something called the 1619 project. the project is a series of writings in 2019 to reframe u.s. history and put slavery as the center of our national narrative. think about that. the left doesn't want to teach our children about the history of men who banded together to shrug off the tyranny of a king and establish for the first time a nation and government of laws and not of men, a government that led to the end of slavery and establishment of equal rights for every citizen. the radical left wants to ignore all of that and focus on
6:18 pm
everything that america got wrong. but to be blunt, they want to teach our kids that our country is flawed. it is hopeless and evil. the worst news of all is the 1619 project has been adopted in 4500 classrooms across all 50 states. school systems have adopted a project in cities like buffalo, chicago, washington, d.c. and my hometown of winston-salem. i will tell you why this is so important to the extreme left. they view our founding as an obstacle to their pursuit of political power. they think if they can reeducate the next generation of americans into being ashamed of their country, they can fundamentally transform us into a land of government dependency and socialism. but the trump administration fought against the left's
6:19 pm
radical agenda by developing the 1776 commission. that brought together scholars and historians to study and understand the principles of the founding and the commission is the key to establishing a base curriculum for a patriotic education for the 21st century. we have to teach the next generation of our country to love our country and not to hate it. but on his first day in office, joe biden canceled this commission. here's what that told me. he exposed the dirty little secret about this new administration, that they don't believe in the goodness of america and they don't believe in the freedom for her people. they think that they know what's best and if you love your country, they think you need to be reeducated. if you are patriotic, they think you are backwards. and by canceling the 1776
6:20 pm
commission, they want to silence millions of americans because the elites feel they are morally superior. they want to see -- seem moralized and stand aside well they indoctrinate the next generation to look at our flag with shame instead of pride. but we are not going to let that happen. i want everyone to leave this conference invigorated. remember, we are the happy warriors. we are the people to fight for our country because we love it. teddy roosevelt said the credit to belong to the man who is actually in the arena whose faith is more by dust and sweat and blood. so i want each and everyone one of you because you already are, stay in the arena. strive violently and dare greatly because this nation a special. our country is blessed by god so we embody the ideals of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness and that we are all
6:21 pm
endowed by our creator with equal rights that no man or government could ever take away and that is worth fighting for. with the help of the patriots in this room, by being in the arena, i believe we can save our country again. thank you and may god bless each and everyone of you. [applause] >> ladies and gentlemen, please welcome representative virginia foxx. >> hi, everybody. what a great group. it is a delight to be with you all today. i have to say, i had a cousin getting in touch with me to say he would be here today. his name is frank paul mary. i know you are not in this room.
6:22 pm
no relationship to jennifer, i will tell you that. anyway, you know the federal government has no place in education. see this? i carry this with me everywhere i go. the three most important words outside the bible in my opinion are those three words that begin this document. we the people. show me in this document where education is referenced and i will show you salaam planned -- swampland in new mexico. they are using this to expand the federal government's role in every aspect of our lives. democrats are using it to dictate how much salt is in school meals, but they can't dictate a school reopening plan. the hypocrisy is crystal clear. right now in america, the
6:23 pm
powerful teachers unions and enablers have seized control of too many education systems and are using their power to serve themselves instead. of fighting to reopen school safety, teachers union leaders are tweeting about the dangers of in person learning while sitting poolside in the caribbean. teachers unions claim hassling -- passing the socialist medicare for all and defunding taxes on millionaires are for teachers to do their job safely. remember that swampland in new mexico, this isn't a reopening plan. these are hostage demands. we have even seen virtual schools closed because of snow. does that make any sense? nonsensical. it is also sad because we lost sight of what truly matters, students. working with betsy devos, we lamented that our education system is prone to saying no
6:24 pm
instead of finding the will to get to yes, but most important he it is built around those who run it, not those it is supposed to serve, students. america's are being robbed of precious time they should spend in classrooms alongside their peers. studies show school closures lead to significant learning loss with students of color suffering the most, exacerbating the already existing achievement gap. republicans understand education as a gateway for students to achieve their greatest potential in society. at such a pivotal moment in this country, why would we allow the next generation of entrepreneurs, business owners, civic leaders and so many more to be left behind? proud conservatives in congress and state houses around the country recognize this great threat. we won't stand idly by while america's families and students are left to fend for themselves. for over a year, the public has been told to believe the

science, follow the science and live by the science, but now that the science favors school reopening's, bureaucrats and teachers unions claim schools are no longer safe for students. you have heard the biden administration change their tune too many times. it is disappointing but not surprising. first it claimed to reopen the majority of schools within 100 days. then they said actually, we will make sure schools are open one day a week. and also since -- said schools could reopen without teachers being vaccinated. then they said actually, the cdc director made that comment in a personal capacity even though she said it at an official briefing. it also said reopening schools have led to increased community spread. then they said actually, most schools probably shouldn't reopen because we are worried about community spread. now they are saying we need to use a stimulus bill so schools have the money to reopen, but just this week, the white house
6:26 pm
spokesman admitted this pelosi payout of nearly $2 trillion won't be used this year to help open schools. also the biden bailout wolpe federal bureaucrats 1400 dollars per week for 15 weeks to stay home and not work if their child's school is still virtual. how will this get our schools to reopen? one day per week of in-person instruction is an insult to the countless families who have been caught in this balancing act for more than a year. students must safely return to the classroom. we cannot allow teachers unions to hold hostage our children's future. republicans are proud to fight for the millions of students and hard-working families stuck in the middle of this shameful saga. you've got my commitment i will work to reopen schools safely. reopening the schools is truly reopening opportunity for america's students so our nation young minds are encouraged to pursue their american dream and we need you to help us push
