7:10 am
i have a heart on some people besides themselves. i think you did a wonderful job -- it was nothing because anything biden said -- and the school. other than that, she said the same thing biden said. i wish that people would get together, at least go to the table and get what is important to the american people. not just to the republican. this is american, not just the republican people. host: to ruth in seattle on the republican line. caller: i listen to president biden speech and what i had to say is all of the -- on russia response by biden is nothing in my opinion but alive. his words and actions do not match.
7:11 am
for years we have heard that it was true, russia when the reality is that it is the democrats who have been together was russia because they have permitted this to happen. i believe that right now. i woke up at 4:00 in the morning here. i believe that the democrats and biden has the ukrainian blood on their hands because they are still purchasing -- we are the number one purchaser of russian oil. the democrats voted against sanctions, preventing us from -- keeping us from still -- keeping us purchasing oil from russia. that is what is permitting them to do this. once again, you see the lives of the democratic party. they are projecting onto the world and saying that it is always been the republicans who
7:12 am
have been in bed with the russians. reality is, they are the ones who have been in bed with russia. biden has ukrainian blood on his hands. he has done nothing, under his administration that this is happening. the next thing that is going to happen is taiwan is going to fall and all of these other countries. we are losing these countries and it is democrats that are doing this. host: do you think the u.s. and nato response to what is happening in ukraine, the russian invasion, makes it more or less likely that the chinese would see an opening to somehow advance on taiwan? caller: absolutely. more likely. you see those two desperate -- desperate picture together. you have a weak president and this is what happens. it is during -- if you look past
7:13 am
and history it is during the administrations of democrats when we have lost these countries. when is the last time we saw people trying to get into china or trying to get into russia? yeah people trying to get into our country because our freedoms and our liberties that we have here. these people, these ukrainians, you see what they are trying to do to fight for their lives and their freedoms. host: to our independent line. this is denise in maine. caller: i have to say that i agree with the caller before me. i cannot believe that biden is not opening up our -- i mean that would do so much for our country, lower our debt. i am on a fixed income. i cannot afford gas or fuel. opening up two days worth of oil is not going to help anything.
7:14 am
i thought his speech was -- he just said the same thing he has been saying for the last year. he has made no course correction. he has done nothing except hurt us. why is he hurting the american people? why? host: let us hear from marlon on the republican line -- republican line in alexandria, virginia. caller: i was concerned that we did not hear about the wars or bombs or conflicts that we are in across the world. we were focused in on ukraine. even with the ukraine coverage we do not talk about that africans who are not allowed to leave. we have the russians coming in --ukrainians being armed but there is no mention of africans or people of color at all in any of the coverage.
7:15 am
i am outraged about that, i am concerned about the media. host: the president last night did say that u.s. troops will not fight russia in ukraine but will defend nato allies. we will show that to you in just a moment. we will go to bill in new york city on the democrat line. caller: thank you c-span washington journal for taking my call. you are one of the best moderators. can you hear me? i wanted to comment. he said something that came out on social media about the estimates that we have cut black poverty by 30% and we have reduced child poverty more than
7:16 am
50% in the black community. i would say, as many people on social media saying that is about much -- that is about right, live. i feel there is some confusion in misconceptions. he really needs to explain what he was talking about about that because i do not think that was the truth. about this putin thing. i am sorry about the people who are being invaded upon. it sounds to me like a gang turf war, as someone has said. host: that comment from president biden last night on potential involvement in -- with u.s. troops. they said they would not be involved in -- they would support nato allies. pres. biden: let me be clear, our forces are not engaged and will not engage in the conflict with russian forces in ukraine.
7:17 am
our forces are not going to europe to fight ukraine but to defend our nato allies in the event that putin decides to keep moving west. for that purpose, we have mobilized u.s. ground forces squadron -- to predict nato countries. as i have made crystal clear, the united states and our allies will defend every inch of territory that is nato territory with the full force of our collective power. every single inch. host: the morning after the president's first state of the union address. hearing from you, your thoughts and reactions. (202) 748-8000 the line for democrats. (202) 748-8001 four republicans. for independents and others, (202) 748-8002.
7:18 am
let us go to the in independent line from west virginia. caller: hello. i was calling to say that president joe biden, he did a fine job last night. i'm just saying that with all of the -- i think it is nonsense that they are talking about how bad joe biden is doing with this ukraine. i think he is putting nato together again which donald trump tried to destroy. republicans have been topping putin propaganda. tucker carlsen is cheering for russia. republicans have been saying that ukraine interfered with our election. -- they are saying they cheered for ukraine. they should never have been cheering for russia. that is my opinion. my senator mansion -- i
7:19 am
understand he went bipartisan but he has already stopped most of joe biden's agenda. to me i thought that was wrong when he did. host: let me ask you. senator joe manchin standing on the republican side. in the past they have colder members to sit together, to sit with each other for at least a demonstration of bipartisanship. to you, he is your senator. he is more in-line line with republicans, right? caller: that is right. if you want to switch to being independent, that is fine or republican, that is fine. but if you're good to stop the democrat agenda you cannot be routine for republicans as the ones -- i am a west virginia democrat. i am independent on other things. i believe what he did was wrong.
7:20 am
i wish he would just switch over parties. host: do you think that is the view of most of your fellow democrats in west virginia? caller: yes. i understand that we are all moderates. i am for coal, oil, all of the drilling to get us off of russia. i agree with that. but if they take oil and put sanctions on -- from russia, that will big gas even higher here. they're going to hip to hear about inflation, higher gas prices, we do not want that. we want to have independence. host: we go to durham, north carolina. democrats line. caller: good morning. last night i think that he tried to put together a lot of the pieces and the soundbites that were there. i think he started very strong with ukraine. i sort of worried a little bit about the fact that he did not
7:21 am
close the loop on what actions next would be taken with respect to ukraine. there were just a big pieces missing. as usual, the messaging that comes out of the democratic party is just not coalesced. it does not off land of the mark. they told dance around the issue instead of just talking to people directly about it. like the republicans do. pretty successfully in compared to -- even though i disagree with most of the comments. i hope that anybody who is listening right now on this goes back and listening to just how atrocious and despicable lauren boebert from colorado was last night. when joe biden was talking about america, and i am a navy veteran as well. two deployments to afghanistan. for her to say what she said in
7:22 am
the middle of his speech where he was talking about his son and coming back with cancer, brain cancer in particular because of the burn pits which have been a big issue. i have seen that manifest itself in some patients who are vets returning. it was just deplorable and i think all republicans need to take a step back and really look at how despicable some of these things are. these tactics, behaviors that are coming out of the right. maybe the left needs to take the gloves off and not become nasty in the same way. get your messaging together and hit the mark. anybody who goes back and watches. i am sure that fox news will not carry it. host: let's to get through. it is does it continues to be a busy day on capitol hill. house and senate are in great the president's state of the

caller: i just have one thing to say about the state of the union message last night. it was all lip service. there was nothing there that would ever make me think about voting for him, for joe biden. everything he said was lip service. he is trying to mimic the stuff that donald trump put in which is make america great again and about defunding the police. i cannot believe that he sat there or stood there in front of the american people and that. when kamala harris sitting behind him was the one putting the money forth for putting off -- for all these people who were destroying our cities. i cannot believe it. the whole thing last night was
7:28 am
nothing but lip service and nothing but lies. host: to joe on the republican line. caller: i think to express the facts that you did not hear last night in the state of the union address from biden and nancy pelosi yesterday. i would start out the joe biden never created 6.5 million new jobs. these are jobs that reopened post-covid, bottom line. i could have done that. 800,000 american citizens died under his tutelage. with all of the equipment he had -- over 800,000 have died of covid. inflation, 40-year high. barrel of oil going through the roofs.

greatest president in my lifetime and i am 72. i must say, i have to quote the famous committee and, never underestimate the power of stupid people in large groups. i believe that the president addressed things that were important. i noticed two things. it cost a lot of money to get elected to office in this country. the two things that he said that the republican side did not and up and cheer about was oil, and pharmaceuticals. very powerful lobbyists, they donate a lot of money, to help people get elected. we are not the like the rest of the world where taxes will pay

and that the john bolton did a whole thing on donald trump. if they go to new smack they will see it. i am a veteran. i was in the army from 1980 to 2000. i've seen several different presidents evolve different stride. here's the thing, you cannot get anything done if you have the republicans against everything. it does not matter what biden put up. they are against it. it doesn't matter. thank you for taking my call. god bless america. host: press reflective of something he had to say. this job page headline on the washington post. the scene from the floor on the u.s. house, joint session. biden seeks to rally a nation in step on ukraine, little else.
7:51 am
in pennsylvania, john on the republican line. caller: good morning. i think that comment on the speech, it is like any other president. they say what they need to say at the time. he spoke about getting away from gas and putting all of these charging stations up. i am a senior citizen, i would like to know what senior citizen or person in rural pennsylvania or in the inner cities can afford an electric car. i do not think that is the way. i think we should get our gas from canada and south america. i am a united states marine veteran. he spoke of the burn pits. a lot of my colleagues are trying to get veterans benefits, it is always deny and then die. they leave the veterans behind and say what they need to say. i have nothing against no biden. i'm 45 miles from his hometown.
7:52 am
the democrats are going to back him. i understand that. i am against donald trump. i am a republican. i do not like what is going on. i served my country. i love my country. who host: john mcardle mentioned the travels of joe biden traveling to sell his agenda. john, a bit more on what the current -- with the president is doing? >> he is traveling to minnesota and wisconsin. he will be talking about the infrastructure will. that is expected around 3:30 p.m. today. he will be joined on the road by vice president kamala harris. that is happening post stated of the union address. happening at the same time, primary day in texas with some key races we have been talking about on "washington journal"

7:59 am
that speech was not paying attention. i do not think they are patriotic at all. if they cannot understand that this was about america but you were not paying attention or you just do not care. secondly, i would like to say that i think ida did exactly what i voted him -- said what he asked of him when i elected him. i asked to him -- to help american people. for those who are saying it is just another speech about build back better, then yes it is. i expect him to fulfill that. anybody who sits on that floor will take a second look at the bill back let her plan and mission accomplished. i know that all c-span posts are different but one thing i will respect with pedro, pedro does not allow callers to insult the president of united states
8:00 am
regardless of who is in office. he always -- i would appreciate that you cannot control what comes out of every viewers mouth but i would appreciate if you could or -- stop the name-calling because that feeds into what all of the other callers or other posts treat oud officials. if you could do that, i would appreciate it. host: thanks for the input. we go to doug in oxford, new jersey on the independent line. caller: i am not sure what the other callers are saying that i do not see what jill biden has done it all to help this country. we have inflation at a 40 year high. one of his first executive orders was to shut down the keystone pipeline. we did that. we are now energy dependent on other countries in the face of a possible airport.
8:01 am
i think it is in epic disaster. i do not know what you people are seeing. host: let's hear from kim in new york, democrats line. caller: if i could just comment on the last caller who said that he did not know what joe biden was doing. that is probably because he is watching fox and they do not tell him what joe biden is doing. i think he gave a good speech last night. it was better than i thought it would be. it was positive, upbeat. i think he caught this thing in the middle-of-the-road to please everybody. the democrats still shot him down. with respect to ukraine, we have gone to war over lies. we spent 20 years in afghanistan for no real reason.
8:02 am
except they did make some money for the military industrial complex. here we have the afghani's could not even hold back isis from attacking. and here you have a democratic country fighting to maintain their democracy and the way of life that we value and cherish in america and we cannot have a flyover zone. we are not doing what we should be doing. those people are truly vulnerable against putin. host: we are losing you. tim in albany. tom reed with a series of tweets saying, "last night, we heard a speech. america's power rests in the people. i trust the people respect the

heart of the speech." this speaker, "childcare prescription drugs and more, deliver better prices for consumers and create more good paying union jobs. together, we are building a better america." here is michael in florida on the independent line. caller: hi. i really thought that the state of the union last night was very strong, just like president biden said. anyone who is getting angry about what he said apparently was not listening because it was one of the most peaceful speeches i have ever heard in my life. i am an independent voter. i started out as a republican. and i have swung back and forth and i am an independent and i did not get to choose who appears on the ballot when everyone else does. for some reason, a certain
8:04 am
percentage of your callers want to get angry and scream at people and they are not even listening, they are not even giving him a chance. it is -- i am very sad about that. people like your caller from pennsylvania and the two gentlemen from georgia, thank you both for calling. thank all of you. one bit of criticism i have to get to the host is not highlight it again. that is where a lot of his anger comes from and it has to stop. ukraine is showing us how people unite when they lift each other and call each other countrymen and for some reason there is this small percentage calling up and getting so angry at the rest of us and making us think that we are not like them. they are just being louder than us. host: amelia in georgia on the
8:05 am
democrats line. caller: good morning, c-span. i have been a longtime viewer of c-span and i am so sad because of the republican brothers and sisters. and apparently these people, it is like a broken record. every caller, they talk about the same thing, about joe biden is weak. they talk about the keystone pipeline and they talk about afghanistan. allow me to say something to these people. the keystone pipeline was not even supplying any oil to the united states. it was a company in canada, it was not even anything that was supplying to americans. afghanistan happened because of
8:06 am
trump signing an agreement with the taliban. joe biden had nothing to do with that and yes, it was a little bit of things going on when they were leaving, but it is because the afghans panicked and they were trying to get out because of that agreement that trump's signed with the taliban. if he had not signed this agreement with the taliban, afghanistan would have never happened that way. and another thing that i want to say. you think that the republicans are for you. on december 29, there was a resolution, voter resolution in congress, a budget resolution. and all republicans voted to cut medicare. you have medicare, social security because of democrats. republicans have never passed a
8:07 am
law to help us, the working-class, the working people. i am a nurse and i will tell you something. the hospitals are filled with people that are unvaccinated because of the ill information that the republican governors and republican officials have been giving you. host: appreciate that, amelia. we are hearing from viewers and listeners throughout the morning. also our colleague john mcardle who has been monitoring social media reaction from members on the hill, and more. john: let me show this graphic again on the length of the state of the union address. it was 62 minutes long as night and this compares to the first state of the union address of previous presidents showing that joe biden was in the middle, may be a little bit on the longer side. for historical purposes, the longest state of the union delivered was in 2000 bill
8:08 am
clinton at one hour, 28 minutes and 29 seconds and the shortest was president nixon at just 28 minutes and 55 seconds. you can see how joe biden compared there. he spent the top of his speech, the top 15% are so, about 10 minutes on the subject of ukraine and that was what members reacted to the most last night. here are a few responses coming from late last night and this morning from the speaker of the house, nancy pelosi. she tweeted that, "last night our nation and the world saw president biden's resolve in the state of the union address and that democracy will prevail over autocracy. america's commitment to ukraine's sovereignty and the ukrainian people remains ironclad. it is what she tweeted 25 minutes ago. and this from the republican congressman, longtime member of the foreign relations committee from texas, congressman mccall
8:09 am
saying, "at tonight state of the union, i wore the ukrainian flag pin to show my solidarity with the people of ukraine to remind the president that americans and -- of the americans and the afghans that he abandoned in afghanistan are still a priority to me." also with that pin showing the afghanistan operation as well. that is some of the tweets on that topic from the news media. this is one from political reporter david trucker tweeting out, "the most important audience last night was overseas . american allies and adversaries and what they hear from the president or what they think they hear matters." he has been covering congress for a long time on capitol hill. just to show you how this is playing out in d.c. and around
8:10 am
the country, just a few front pages starting right here on capitol hill with "the hill," biden hits putin and project unity, is the have when they went with. "biden uses putin wore in an effort to portray his image of leadership." from the arizona republic, "biden vows to check russian aggression." this is the front page for those waking up in orlando, florida. "biden vows putin will pay a price." from the west coast, "the san francisco chronicle,", "putin badly misjudged global unity." some of the headlines we are waking up to around the country and we will show you headlines from around the world. host: thanks for that. "the washington times" in their headline, "biden uses booze war in order to portray leadership.

years of missteps at home and abroad." leading off the speech with 10 minutes of progress on the war in ukraine. [video clip] pres. biden: six ago, vladimir putin sought to shake the foundations of the free world, thinking he could make it bend to his menacing ways. but he badly miscalculated. he thought he could roll into ukraine and the world would rollover. instead, he met with a wall of strength he never anticipated or imagined. he met the ukrainian people. [laughter] [laughter] [applause] to ever ukrainian, their fairness -- fearlessness, determination inspires the world.

groups of citizens blocking tanks with their bodies. everyone from students to retirees to teachers turned soldiers defending their homeland. president zelensky said the speech from the european parliament, "light will win over darkness." the ukrainian ambassador to the united states is here with us tonight. let each of us if you're able to stand, stand and send an unmistakable signal to the world for ukraine. thank you. thank you. she is bright, strong, resolved.
8:13 am
host: before we get back to your calls on the speech last night, sheila tweets this about some of our democratic caller's this morning complaining about republican comments saying, "how about you play the day after trump's state of the union message. let's hear how democrats bashed him." " joe biden's message was targeted toward independence last night and i think it worked." let's hear from margaret in texas. caller: good morning. host: make sure you mute your volume and go ahead with your comment. caller: i have muted. i am not concerned with the length of the speech. i am concerned with the content and i thought it was a very good speech. my main issue politically which he talked on was the environment. for the person who said who could applaud an electric car, i
8:14 am
am 94 years old and i'm driving an electric nissan. whoever it was, if they would look at the news and see how electric cars are getting cheaper and cheaper. as far as the expense, my only expense has been new tires and windshield wipers. there are so few pieces that have to be replaced are checked or anything and an electric car compared to a gas guzzler, it is almost unbelievable. i live in texas, which is considered an oil state. and i live not far from west texas where they pump the oil. i live in the hill country. just recently i was speaking to two men that worked in the oil industry and they still do over in west texas and they say they
8:15 am
know it is a dying industry and that so many of the workers there are leaving to go into the wind industry because their skills are complementary. they can transfer them. we in texas, it is touted as a big oil country, it is a big wind industry too. up in the northern part of texas , in ercot, there have been times when it has been free from about 10:00 p.m. at night until the early morning because they are getting so much energy coming through the wind. the big problem we have is the storage and that is where the industry really needs to ramp
8:16 am
up. but if people will look and see what our department of energy is going, on the ground there is a great deal going on and it is getting more and more. i thought biden's speech was really good. as someone else noted, the republicans did not cheer when he mentioned the pharmaceutical companies and the oil companies because the republicans are big business and get most of their money from those two industries. host: thank for that. we will go to sandusky, ohio. dale on the republican line. caller: good morning. how are you doing today? host: fine, thanks. caller: i watched the speech last night and it seems like the same speech that he played just months ago. i understand afghanistan and
8:17 am
with trump signing that and there was an agreement there and ukraine and russia. what i see as a problem is there were no jobs created. we are buying 23 million gallons of oil from russia. he cut that off instantly so that would stop that. i see another problem is nobody is worried about the southern border with the 2 million illegals coming across, jumping into our little tiny towns. i am really concerned that most of the democrats do not even look at the democratic cities. we look at new york with high crime in oc's area -- pelosi's area with high crime. that is more concerning with anything else. we have afghans that do not know who they are aware they are at. just illegals. now you are going to give amnesty to all of these people?
8:18 am
what jobs are they going to do? you have americans that are not even working. in sandusky, there are whole -- help wanted signs paying $18 an hour. four flipping burgers and fries? i am an electrician and we don't even start off at $18 an hour and that is a skilled trade. host: why don't you think those jobs are being filled? caller: those are handouts. everybody is on unemployment. everybody is waiting for the next stimulus check. democrats have always been known to be a welfare group. they have always wanted handouts. they always wanted to be the money provided for the people. host: most of that additional aid has expired. the problems still persist not only in sandusky, but elsewhere. caller: they are still on
8:19 am
unemployment. i see it. they say the unemployment rate has dropped, but we see unemployment here. host: the governor of volume up kim reynolds gave the republican response last night. the headline, "republicans leading profamily revolution." kim reynolds also criticized the president on the response to the conflict and ukraine. [video clip] >> even before taking the oath of office, the president told us that he wanted to "make america respected around the world again and to unite us here at home to her company -- here at home. " he has failed on both fronts. the disaster in afghanistan did more than cost american lives. it betrayed our allies and embolden our enemies. north korea is testing again at an alarming rate. the speaker of the heights --
8:20 am
the speaker of the house recently warned are lipid athletes not to speak out against china. and now russia has launched an unprovoked full-scale military invasion of ukraine. an attack on democracy, freedom, and the rule of law. now all americans must stand united in solidarity with the people of ukraine as they courageously defend their country against putin's tyranny as they fight for their freedom. but we should not ignore what happened in the run-up to foods invasion. -- putin's invasion. waving sanctions on the pipeline while eliminating at home, focusing on political correctness rather than military readiness, reacting to world events instead of driving them, weakness on the world stage has a cost and the president's approach to foreign policy has consistently been too little,
8:21 am
too late. it is time for america to once again project confidence. it is time to be decisive. it is time to lead. [end video clip] host: that is the governor of value in kim reynolds and her republican response, the official republican response to the state of the union address. there were a number of democratic parallel addresses and responses and we will show you pieces from one or two of those. let's check in with john mcardle for further reaction. john: we have been talking with viewers about moments throughout the speech. here is a headline about one of those viral moments. it was the final three words of joe biden's state of the union address last night. "go get em," joe biden's final rallying cry causes confusion. [video clip] pres. biden: we are stronger
8:22 am
today than we were a year ago and we will be stronger one year from now than we are today. this is our moment to meet and overcome the challenges of our time, and we will. as one people, one america, the united states of america. god bless you all and make out protector troops. thank you. go get 'em." [end video clip] john: immediately after that, people taking to twitter to wonder who him was in go get him. your are a few of the comments. this from the chief of "reason magazine," ," who was that for?"
8:23 am
this tweet coming from luke saying, "it is a catholic way of saying give them hell. it is not meant to go after putin." one other marble moment. his headline from -- one other viral moment. this headline from "the hill," applause misfire, here is that moment. [video clip] pres. biden: unlike the $2 trillion tax cut passed in the previous military should -- pass in the previous administration, the american rescue plan helps working people and left no one behind. [applause]
8:24 am
and it worked. [end video clip] john: chuck schumer there with that stop and start. it instantly became a meme. here is one of the tweets about it from the naacp talking about chuck schumer saying, it is when the president talks about education costs but does not talk about canceling student debt. that sort of stop, stand up, don't clap, sit down. one more from a republican congressman from texas. just some of the viral moment from last night. host: leave it this way media to find moments like that. thanks for that. (202) 748-8000 is the line for democrats. (202) 748-8001 for republicans. independents and others, (202)
8:25 am
748-8002. we welcome your comments on twitter. this one says, "ranks, c-span. i was relieved to hear the commitment to environmental concerns." john says, "the speech was a compilation of all others. it was like eating leftovers for dinner. nothing inspiring and happy to be finished. look forward to a new cook soon." "the republicans did not seem excited as all -- at all. as a republican, i was disappointed in the republican representatives." we will hear from brent in quincy, michigan. go ahead. caller: good morning. on the question of inflation, historically the institution that has controlled inflation to the extent that it can be controlled is the federal reserve and in august 2020,
8:26 am
jerome powell, the chairman of the fed, said they would stimulate inflation and since that time, they have been buying $120 billion a month i'm in treasuries and mortgage-backed securities to accomplish that, plus keep the interest rates low. this has stimulated inflation. the investment firm blackrock recently has been pleading with the fed that it should stop qe. to those who cite the keystone pipeline, the pipeline that never carried a drop of oil, has not added or subtracted from the oil supply, the reason that oil is up is because during the
8:27 am
pandemic, the price of oil dropped because demand dropped. it is the traders that control the price of oil, not the president of the united states. host: let's hear from james in florida on the republican line. caller: good morning. just a quick review from my democratic friends relative to the criticism being made of the president's speech. let's review the facts. inflation is running at a forty-year high and the cpi number that came out last week by the government was 7.4% as i recall. oil prices topped $108 on the market yesterday. that is a forty-year high oil -- on oil. we have a debacle of the
8:28 am
afghanistan pullout which gave commissioner putin, emboldened him to see what a weak more on we have as president. mr. biden invited this invasion in ukraine by his of sensible -- ostensible weakness. we have uncontrolled borders with illegal immigrants pouring across the border at a time when americans are barely getting their needs met. i live in south florida where it is out of control in terms of costs because the government controls land development and etc. to my democratic friends, i
8:29 am
would caution them that they should look at the facts before they defend. the only thing that scares me more is the health of the president. when i looked behind him and i see the vice president who is truly an incompetent human being. host: let's hear from charlotte in north carolina on the democrats line. caller: good morning. host: what is your name? caller: [indiscernible] the one point was the keystone pipeline and the point being set over and over, misinformation and no one is correcting them
8:30 am
that the oil going through the keystone pipeline was being used for gas. it has nothing to do with inflation right now. the second thing is when people talk about the immigrants and crossing the border. where do the immigrants go when they get across the border? they seem to stop at that point. when immigrants cross the border, they are going somewhere and they're looking for somebody. people are saying they are eating avocados and strawberries. the people who come across the border are working at the same places that slaughter cows and chickens. this is reality. blame the people who hire them. blame the people who hire the immigrants who come across the border illegally if this bothers you all so much. my other point is that joe biden cannot make the price of gas go down. the price of gas is high across the whole earth, the whole world. joe biden is on the president of china or brazil or the president of kinda -- the president of
8:31 am
canada. gas is high there also. my last point is this. the chinese past $1.3 trillion on the europe stock exchange. that is unheard of. you could not go to china and put money into their stock market. if people are thinking that their white skin means they are closer to someone who has a lot of money, it is crazy. host: let's hear from jose in mesquite, texas on the independent line. caller: good morning, c-span. biden's speech last night, he said what he had to say to keep america optimistic. my point was lauren boebert, she just received her ged and 2020 -- in 2020.
8:32 am
what did trump say? i think she is a big supporter. so much for lauren boebert. but i am tired of politicians talking about lowering prescriptions but do nothing. if they were serious, they would be on board today and that is all i have to say. host: one of the areas the president touched on last night with the border -- was the border and border security and immigration reform. [video clip] pres. biden: to further advance liberty and justice, we need to secure our border and fix the immigration system. [applause] as you might guess, i think we can do both. at our border, we have installed
8:33 am
new technology like cutting edge scanners to better detect drug smuggling. we have set up patrols from mexico to guatemala to catch human traffickers. we are putting in place better immigration judges in larger number so families fleeing persecution can have their cases heard faster and those who do not legitimately get here can be sent back. we are securing commitment and supporting partners in south and central america to host more refugees and secure their own borders. we can do all this all -- while keeping lit the torch of liberty that led generations of americans to this land. provided pathway to citizenship for dreamers, those farmworkers, essential worker's. so that families do not wait decades. it is not only the right thing to do, it is economically smart. that is why immigration reform
8:34 am
is supported by everyone from labor unions to religious leaders to the u.s. chamber of commerce. let's get it done once and for all. [end video clip] host: more of our listeners and viewers reaction to the state of the union in a moment. we also have editorials and other pieces in reaction to the speech. "the new york times" with the headline, "achieving unity: biden left unaddressed several hard questions about where america goes next and how we will ultimately emerge some mr. coons audacious effort to dismantle -- mr. putin's audacious effort. what happens when the just a relation of russia's economy and freezing the assets of oligarchs and their families fails to force him into retreat? and what if when he is finished with ukraine, the russian leader keeps going determined to reestablish the influence that
8:35 am
the soviet union's last leaders gave up disastrously? for the first time since satellites detected the russian troops on the ukrainian border last fall, mr. biden openly acknowledged that he is not certain where mr. putin is going to stop so he drew the line along the borders of an expanded nato, a map that mr. putin insists must be roll back -- must be rolled back. that last line was the most ominous. esther biden and his eight f -- mr. biden and his aides have free will be debated whether the leaders go far beyond ukraine. that is david's anger at -- david senger at nytimes.com. john: first on capitol hill, about one hour and a half now,

this from been lowballed on twitter, he is the communications director for this effort for her confirmation. him tweeting out about those meetings saying, "it is former senators doug jones, former democratic senator from alabama who is the so-called sherpa guiding her through this confirmation process." one more tweet from ron klain, chief of staff at the white house noting that the president going to wisconsin today to promote infrastructure at the white house. they will be talking about the test and treat covid response. on those two things, the president will depart on the white house around 10:15 a.m. eastern. he will be headed to wisconsin to talk about building back better and the bipartisan infrastructure initiative according to the guidance we have. he will be speaking at yellowjacket human at the
8:38 am
university of wisconsin superior in superior, wisconsin. those remarks from the president about 3:30 this afternoon. host: was there an intentional shift from the phrase build back better build a better america? john: building a better america is the term that we heard. we did not hear build back better. i wonder if that is the phrase we will hear from the president again. that is happening this afternoon and here are some watches here on c-span. the test to treat initiative, just one article on that to remind viewers because there was a lot in the state of the union last night. here is the "the new york times" story. "president biden looking to usher america out of the crisis in what is called the new normal to stretch out the next phase of the pandemic response including test to treat initiative which aims at providing patients with antiviral medication as soon as they learn that they are

infected. the idea would be those pills, those antiviral pills coming out of doctors offices immediately after you test positive." the white house looking to lay out more about that program and questions will be about the supply of those antiviral pills and how they get those two treatment centers and doctors offices around the country. that is the schedule today. host: more from john mcardle in a bit. more from carly's next with brenda here in houston, texas. -- more from callers next with brenda here in houston, texas. caller: good morning. thank you so much for taking my call. i have been looking -- listening to the calls this morning and i want to acknowledge the georgia woman that called. she was so sweet and so accurate on her findings of the republican party. i want to share something with you guys. i have been studying the book of

matthew this fall the school year. i have been asking god why is it that some people see trump and some do not and finally i was given the answer. please go to matthew 13:13. it says, "though seeing, they do not see. though hearing, they do not hear or understand. they fulfill the prophecy of isaiah. you will be ever hearing, but never understanding, ever seeing, but never perceiving. they hardly hear with their ears and they have closed their eyes." host: you know the president is a regular churchgoer to a catholic church. how much do you think his religion influences his decision-making? caller: bill, i am so glad you
8:41 am
asked me that question. on my last call on february 21, the last comment i made was, the war had not kicked off in ukraine yet and i told the audience at that time that president biden is going to handle this situation. it is going to be ok. he is going to handle the situation. i neglected to say it was not my faith in biden as much as it was my faith of his faith in god. he is a godly man. he is a christian man. and why the republicans would want someone like trump to lead them, that is the part i do not understand. it is incredible. they are the christians, guys. thank you so much for take my call. i hope that makes the democrats
8:42 am
feel better, better understanding as to what we are operating against. host: we're going to go to kevin. are you there? i'm sorry, vernon in atlanta, georgia. independent line. caller: thank you for taking my call. i'm a lot younger than a lot of the other callers. just coming from my perspective, i used to lean democrat in my earlier years. i'm almost 40 now and i'm strictly independent. i think the two party system is failing to address the needs of the people on both sides and it is very divisive. i think the state of the union address was very indicative of that, when biden was giving history -- giving his speech, he was talking to two different people. he was trying to protect strength to the rest of the world and at home, he was trying to rally people to unify. i think in doing both, he's
8:43 am
projecting weakness and showing how divided the country was because simple arguments like immigration or healthcare or defunding the police shows the divide and misrepresentation of the population itself. yet, we are trying to protect strength to the rest of the world after we fought a war based on lies for the past 20 years and now we are not ready or not capable of actually entering a war that we should if we are actually trying to protect democracy around the world. i think this is the worst time to be an american because that term is used very loosely and over covers certain segments of the population -- and only covers certain segments of the population. host: how old are you, if you don't mind? caller: i will be 36 this year. in my political years and pay
8:44 am
more attention as i have grown up, this has to be the most divided this country has ever been. as a young man, it is very worrying seeing some of the challenges we have to go through. as an african-american man, even more challenging when you do not see a lot of my people's values represented in the candidates that are put forth. host: we will hear from jack in michigan next, republican line. caller: good morning, bill. host: go ahead. caller: i think it sounded just like his campaign speech. he was saying the same thing on his campaign, what he was going to do and he had a plan. we have not seen his plan. his plan has phased out and fizzled out. we have not seen anything that he said truthful. the only thing i did not hear
8:45 am
him say less wind that surprised me was when he was in his campaign he did say he was not going to hurt the poor or the working class. but with the gas prices and everything else being up there, what is that hurting? for the final statement, the lady that called about being biblical, last i heard, he was not pro-life. have a great day. host: this is from "insider." " victoria spartz makes an emotional plea for stronger u.s. action." " this is the genocide of the ukrainian people by a crazy man. " the republican of indiana made these comments before her speech and a gathering on capitol hill. -- in a gathering on capitol hill. [video clip] >> thank you. i did not prepare a speech so i will talk from my heart. this is not a war. this is genocide of the ukrainian people by a crazy man
8:46 am
who cannot get over that ukrainian people do not want socialism, soviet union. they want to be for people and he cannot get over. i will tell you a personal story. my grandma is 95. she is in a city that controlled moscow. they could not take the city. they are bombing civilians nonstop. day and night, the whole city. she has a daughter who lives in a little village and her daughter told her, they came into the village with heavy machine guns and killed almost
8:47 am
every person in that village. and whatever people were left in women and children, they forced them in front of the tanks as a human shield because they could not take that city. so she told my mom, do not cry. we are not crying here. we are going to fight but just give us some guns so we do not fight with sticks. this woman was born in russia. she is a russian born woman and they are killing women and children. bombs, carpet bombed, illegal weapons. they now have special groups that are trying to kill women and children. i called my friend and she said she was able to get out.
8:48 am
her friend was trying to get out and the gas station and she got shot with her children with machine guns so she stayed in the city. they are leveling the cities to the ground, destroying the people. they are slaughtering them like animals. they are killing the people. it is not a war, it is a genocide because we have a crazy man that has the whole world hostage and then we have a president that talks about and does not do things. how long is he going to wait? until noon's have died and then he is going -- until millions have died and then he is going to do more? [end video clip] host: "ukrainians say they are fighting on in a southern city, it would be the biggest city yet captured by the russians. craniums say street battles are going on and russia is bombarding other cities as it advances."
8:49 am
john mcardle, president biden did speak about the issue of police funding, a big domestic issue. tell us more. john: the fund the police line got a lot of attention last night. "we should all agree the answer is not to defend the police, it is to fund the policing." -- fund the police." we saw a reaction on twitter, support from conservatives and black lives --backlash from black lives matter groups. "democrats do not want to fund the police." this from republican congressman jack duncan, "it is his party that is going to defund the
8:50 am
police input dangerous criminals back on the street." " now they want to fund the police? when is the election?"some of the backlash. "we do not need to defund the police. we need to fund them with resources and training. it is what whites want to hear." this from the handle from black lives matter showing an incident of maxine waters of california saying it is their point of view , listening to biden declared that the answer is not to defund the police, it is to fund the police." host: let's get back to the calls.
8:51 am
mike in montana. good morning. caller: good morning to you guys, c-span, and what is left of america. i could not watch biden's speech. everything he said was a lie, made up, and just not true. the lady before said he was a good christian. good christians do not terminate late-term babies right up to birth. that is a fallacy. he is not a good christian. we will let him have the eucharist church. i admire putin for going back in and taking back what is his. ukraine is where russia started and putin is worried about nato. if nato would back off. one little government is looking for another avenue to control, i think they are slobbering over the idea that there might be a
8:52 am
war on our land where they can declare martial law and steal our vote again. host: let's hear from flint, michigan. david on the democrats line. caller: good morning, c-span. i enjoyed the speech. the difference is night and day. that last four years with that other guy as president, it was just so disgusting. to have a man with morals, with character, that tells the truth, is unbelievable. he has rallied the whole western world and the whole world against this murderous killer, putin, which the republican, over half of the republican party supports putin and his killing and maiming of the ukrainians. do we want these kind of people
8:53 am
over us, america? i enjoyed his speech on prescription drugs. he wants to lower the price. he talked on voting rights. he wants to stop the immigration down there at the southern border but the republicans will not vote on a deal to stop it because this is their point, they keep that to use for voting to keep their base so they do not want to solve that problem. they want to keep that to keep eating votes on the right -- keep getting votes on the right. he was doing a great job. i am ready to send in my money because we cannot let democracy disappear in america and go to an authoritarian republican belief. america is supposed to be democratic. host: let's hear from our independent line. fayetteville, new york, diane,
8:54 am
good morning. caller: how are you? host: fine, thanks. caller: i will be 65. i was born in 1957 in salt lake city, utah. my dad was a first-generation immigrant born in america from czechoslovakia. his parents fled so they would not have to put up with the ukrainians. he was a chief master sergeant at current air force base so i am well aware of different things that go on. also i consider myself a political virgin because i chose not to follow politics until the last three years with covid. i lost my business so i have a lot of time. i do not watch news channels. i watch "washington journal" and
8:55 am
very good shows that i consider and i am very distressed that as americans, we honor and put up on pedestals athletes, colleges, our politicians. from what i have seen, and not paying any attention for years and years, is that, i will not use the typical terms, but there is no common sense anymore. and i listen and i objectively figure out who i trust, who i do not trust. i am highly dyslexic. i have a very keen sense of common sense. i think that our biggest thing
8:56 am
is that we are fighting each other. we do not take into consideration that maybe some of the democrats want to hold power and some of the republicans do also. it is all a show and pony show and nothing can be believed unless we see the truth in the putting -- pudding. host: glad to have been tuned in. one hour in two minutes as john mcardle mentioned. here is what president biden had to say about election laws, voting laws being passed around the country. [video clip] pres. biden: the most fundamental right in america is the right to vote and have it counted. it is under assault. in state after state, new laws have been passed to not only suppress the vote, we have been
8:57 am
there before, but to subvert the entire election. we cannot let this happen. tonight i call on the senate to pass the freedom to vote act, passed the john lewis act, the voting rights act. and while you are at it, pass the act so americans know who is funding the election. host: we are getting your reaction to the state of the union speech last night. the lines are (202) 748-8000 for democrats, (202) 748-8001 for republicans, and for all others, (202) 748-8002. you can send us a comment to (202) 748-8003 or tweet. steve says, "our bias is showing. joe knows the party is in trouble and he is doing his part
8:58 am
to improve the approval ratings. that is the way the game is played." olivia says, "if it was directed to anyone, 'him'would be putin." david with this text, "god bless us all." oklahoma city on the democrats line. caller: good morning. there are two things i wanted to bring up. the first one is all the misinformation about oil. biden does not own an oil well. he does not own a refinery. he cannot produce oil. he cannot produce gasoline. oil is a world commodity.
8:59 am
all of it goes into one big pool and you will not find a business that is more supply and demand instantly knowing how much fuel is available for purchase, how much oil. if you if you remember during the closed down, oil got to zero, the price of oil. the second layer is refineries. they store bulk oil, but then have to turn it into gasoline. america, when it buys oil, it can't say, let me buy some colombian, a little arabian -- it's one big pool. biden doesn't control that. the second thing i wanted to bring up, all this complains about his weakness -- to me, that is ageism. i am 69. i have a little balance problem,
9:00 am
walking can be difficult. you have to be careful about that. the pains, arthritis, it changes the way you walk. when you get old, people need to understand this -- his mind is as sharp as it ever was. i love my president. joe, go get 'em. host: akron, ohio, republican line. caller: hi, thanks for taking my call. his speech sounded good, but i don't think he really talked about how things were when he took office and how they are now, as far as was our border closed when he took office? were there 2 million people coming across the border not really legally? were we energy-efficient and did we supply our own crude oil ourselves? hr one, they have been trying to
9:01 am
pass that from the beginning. to federalize voting law is against our constitution. states have the right to make their own laws how we vote and that's how it should be. they don't follow the constitution they make their own rules. yeah -- i don't think, when he took office, there was world peace. there is no world peace today. host: let's hear from steve in new york, democrat line. your thoughts on the state of the union, steve? caller: yeah, i thought it was pretty standard. i don't know what people expected from that speech, but i would like to tip my hat to that guy from oklahoma who talked about oil. people don't understand, we are not oil independent. we will never be oil
9:02 am
independent. it is a commodity. the oil companies are holding back and can pump out more whenever they want. saudi arabia can flood the market and push down the price to two bucks in a week. the guy from ohio that talked about world peace? what is he talking about? these people don't know what they are talking about. you got 60 million jobs plus. oil can be brought down, the ceos of oil companies, their shareholders and maybe some incentives. he got us out of a war, it wasn't done great, but trump invited those people that killed those soldiers in afghanistan to the white house, and pompeo said no. we shouldn't do that. he's done a lot. it's not a bad economy, it's on
9:03 am
fire because we've got people vaccinated and except for the other half, who didn't want to take it. now the rest of the world is catching up and spending money, and that's why the crises are going up. but talk about oil. honestly talk about oil. thank you very much. host: let's check in with our colleague, john mcardle. good morning, sir. guest: just about an hour left before the house comes in for the day. the morning hour at 10:00 a.m. and noon for legislative business. we talked a lot about what was said in the house chamber last night during the state of the union, but i want to focus for a second on the optics of the chamber, what it looks like last night. viewers have been seeing our replay of the speech. you noticed the spacing in the house chamber, but here is a good picture from getty images, their tweets showing it was assigned seating in the chamber
9:04 am
last night to create some social distancing, even though mask mandates had been lifted before the speech and covid restrictions had been eased, there was still an effort to create a little space between members of congress. there is that image. as a reminder, this is what the chamber looked like before. it was a lot more crowded in pre-covid times. and one more image from abc news on my ipad, this is the image of what the chamber looked like from joe biden's perspective from last year. you can see much more social distancing, much fewer members allowed in the chamber. there were members staked out in the upper galleries as they were last night, but that is what it looks like one year ago, so a lot more people in the chamber this time around. when it comes to that assigned seating, one note on that -- not everyone stuck to their assigned
9:05 am
seating. this is from matt fuller, his tweet during the state of the union address, saying it was a number of republicans who disregarded their assigned seats last night and are just sitting in a row together. among the group that matt fuller of the daily beast counted were marjorie taylor greene, lauren boebert, ralph norman, byron donalds, david valid otto, rodney davis, cat cannick and maria elvira salazar, from his perspective. so reporting on the optics, not just the speech itself. host: it was are contradictory, state of the union falters after a strong start on ukraine. this is a piece written by dan mclaughlin, who says joe biden's first official state of the union started strong. he spent the first 12 minutes talking about ukraine, which there is a surprising amount of bipartisan consensus.
9:06 am
the ukrainian ambassador was present and many members from both parties were wearing blue and yellow, and were otherwise adorned with ukrainian flags and symbols. the most memorable line was president bidens vowed to defend every single inch of nato territory. it went downhill once he got started on the state of our union, for which biden rambled on for another hour. he hector congress to pass a bunch of bills it had already rejected. he proposed things cost less, called the infrastructure bill "the single biggest investment in history" and declared, we are done talking about infrastructure works. were going to have an infrastructure decade. back to your calls, melissa on the independent line in bloomfield, iowa. go ahead. caller: hi, thanks for taking my call.
9:07 am
i have a couple of things to say about the state of the union. first, he talks about how he wants to fund the police. he ain't funding the police for police officers. he wants social, um, people, to go in instead of the police to handle certain thing. that isn't going to work. second, he talks about how we need to fight against russia, this that and the other? guess what? open up our oil. open up our drilling. stop holding the leases to where people cannot get that anymore. he shut that down. number three, he wanted to talk about prescription drugs? i have three insulin-dependent granddaughters in my family. before joe biden came in, it was $50 a month for their insulin per child. after he came in and wrote these executive orders, they are back to $255 per child for insulin. he lies to us. he wants to show how optics are so great, this, that and the
9:08 am
other. he wants us to not pay attention to what he is doing. he wants to federalize the election? i'm sorry, but our states of the united states take care of the elections. he wants anybody and everybody to be able to vote via their cell phones like new york, or have a paper ballot sent to everybody like they did the last time. i have never asked for a paper ballot and i got five. these are state-controlled elections. he is not going to get them. we have a right to put our election rolls in. all the federal government wants to do is stay in power, and they are not going to be. they are going to lose in november. we are going to take over two thirds of the house and the senate and both him and camel -- kamala are going to be impeached
9:09 am
and we will have a new president in 2023. i can't wait for it to happen. host: let's hear from jerry in fort river, new jersey. go ahead. caller: good morning. i'm a little -- it's a little hard to believe biden. i watched him say no mandates, no mandates, and then we had a mandate. then i watched, low americans left behind, and there are still americans in afghanistan. he wants to unite the united states, but for over a year, non-vaxxers were killers. they killed my grandmother, and i don't believe half the things he says. it's been over a year that he's been in office, and it seems like the left is still blaming trump. i was a little surprised at the gentleman who said that this cognitive -- his
9:10 am
cognitive abilities are perfect. i am a critical care registered nurse for 30 years and all of us nurses talk about how he shows confusion. his walk shows debilitation and his mind is not clear. we all noticed that and we are all nurses. critical care nurses. if he spends more, won't that increase our inflation more? i am having a very hard time believing everything out of ivan's mouth -- out of biden's mouth, because there are some things he has not been truthful about. the border -- he is going to do something, but when? he's got a lot of plans, doesn't he? host: let's hear from our caller in texas, democrat line. caller: yes, hi. i am concerned about the oil, the border, and veterans. what i am looking at, that's one of the first times i have
9:11 am
heard about that. i have been getting a little bit of information from other veterans about the [inaudible] but they are not reaching out to the veterans about that. i got friends that have never smoked a cigarette in their life. but they don't know about the burn pit registry. we need help. i am concerned about the oil. i think someone needs to come on the line and explained to us as to where we are getting oil from. are we still getting oil from russia? there are a lot of answers out there. and i hear a lot of people talking about he is not clear, he is not --, biden has had a speech impediment all his life, and i think he is doing a great job speaking as a stutterer, but
9:12 am
he talks about the border, everyone says the border is open. he put reconnaissance on the border, but i need some to call on the line it explain, what has he done with the border? thank you. host: thank you. a couple comments on twitter. mark has this -- i really thought he would announce they were cutting off russian oil and increasing production here in this country. janet says joe biden was in his element. he greeted attendees for nearly 20 minutes after his speech. after that, c-span showed every minute after he left without host or caller comments. another says, i wonder how many opted to listen to the opposition afterwards? every year there is a republican response. this year, republican governor kim reynolds of iowa spoke. [video clip] >> we honored your freedoms and
9:13 am
saw a right away that lockdowns and school closures, they came with their own significant cost. that mandates weren't the answer. and we actually listens to the science, especially with kids in masks and kids in schools. what happened and is still happening to our children over the last two years is unconscionable. learning loss, isolation, anxiety, depression. so many states, our kids have been left behind and so many will never catch up. that's why iowa was the first state in the nation to require that schools open their doors. i was attacked by the left. i was attacked by the media. but it wasn't a hard choice. it was the right choice. in keeping schools -- host: all right, got cut short
9:14 am
their a little bit, governor reynolds from iowa with the republican response last night. by the way, her speech and the state of the union, the members response from last night, that's all available now on the c-span now mobile app. let's go back to the phones and hear from the republican line. rick in savannah, good morning. caller: good morning morning, thanks for your show. i called a long time ago and talked to john when he had brian skelter on the phone, and i think it's important now, more than ever, especially with the oil, to discuss why we bought so much oil from russia, ukraine, etc. since biden got into office. i would love for john to have miranda divine to discuss the laptop from hell, especially about the compromise joe biden
9:15 am
signed, john's stepson and nancy pelosi's nephew have with an oil company in ukraine and why we are buying so much oil from russia instead of stopping it? that would be important for john mcardle to get miranda divine on the show, because i know he had brian skelter. i am the one who asked if michael evan -- michael evanatti should become president. as far as our leaders in the oil business in russia and ukraine, i think the american people would greatly appreciate washington journal doing that. host: let's hear from daniel on the democrats line in florida. good morning. caller: good morning. i wanted to say that i watch the entire state of the union address last night, and i am so
9:16 am
proud of joe biden for running and winning, and i am so proud of the american voters for voting him in. i was recently thinking about what the alternative would have been, and at this time, considering what's been going on for the last 30 days or so, if the alternative had happened and joe biden was not president, we would be out of nato, and left canada and europe on their own. that is scary. thank you for letting me share my thoughts. host: up next, from falls bay, west virginia. caller: my opinion of the state of the union, it was subpar. he touched on many topics but
9:17 am
lost me on some others. i have noticed over that when he five years of actually paying attention, i feel like it's a lot of words. everyone has a lot of words, whether you are democrat or republican, but i have not seen action. we can talk all day long about better school systems, better health care, lowering poverty and lowering taxes and oil and all this, but we need to see it. we need to see changed to make america better and freer, and unfortunately, freedom is important to the united states, but requiring so many medical staff and other employers to be covid vaccinated or lose your job? that is not freedom to me, unfortunately, and is just upsetting.
9:18 am
host: go ahead, gladys. i did not want to interrupt you. go ahead. caller: the main thing i would like to see is action. we need action. talk all day long. some people like with we are hearing, some people don't, some people do, but we want to follow through. host: it says it feels like you have watch these for years. today feel like they are efforts at cheerleading, morale boosting, if you will? caller: i believe so, getting more people are voters on their side, more funding, more understanding. i get that. republicans or democrats, it's the same. but we just need action. i know you have to go through the house and through the senate to follow through with your action, but in order to do that you need people on your back. that should be the main focus. the united states as a whole. push through on your actions.
9:19 am
don't just be in dreamland. host: thanks for that. we will check back in with john mcardle. hopefully we are not jumping the gun, but go ahead if you are ready. guest: always ready. thanks for checking in. i want to get back to ukraine this morning, what they are waking up to and trying to spread. nancy pelosi, or tweet this morning focusing on ukraine, coming back to ukraine as an issue in the state of the union address. last night, our nation and the entire world saw president biden's resolve in the state of the union, that democracy will prevail over autocracy, america's commitment to ukraine sovereignty and the ukrainian people remains ironclad. that was speaker pelosi just before 8:00 a.m. this morning. senator angus king, the independent from maine, saying
9:20 am
as russia continues its unprovoked invasion of ukraine, they may target our domestic networks via cyber attacks. the homeland security department dealing with cybersecurity is working around-the-clock to improve our cybersecurity and has steps that organizations and individuals should take to protect themselves, linking to the cisa shields up initiative. also on the topic of the invasion of ukraine, those are in the field late this weekend. this came out from quinnipiac -- 63% of americans are concerned that russia may use new your weapons. the poll finding seven out of 10 americans they u.s. troops should get involved if russia invades a nato country. of course, ukraine is not a nato country. one more on ukraine, and this comes back to the words of the speech specifically, mixing up
9:21 am
iranian for ukrainian. president biden referred to ukrainian people as iranian people during his speech. as the independent out of the united kingdom notes, the moment quickly went viral own political pundits pounced on that video, assign of the presidents declining mental sharpness, one of the headlines about that gaffe. and a couple tweets about that gaffe from pundits and members of congress. congressman matt gaetz with his tweet last night about that viral moment, saying biden announcing an unconventional plan to win the hearts and minds of the iranian people in kyiv . and this columnist saying biden
9:22 am
will never gain the hearts and minds of the iranian people -- that's a relief. host: more particular on the ukrainian issue, this is the headline. reporting about a conversation on foxbusiness this morning, trump called the russian invasion "a holocaust," urges russia to stop fighting. he called the russian invasion in ukraine a holocaust and urged russia to stop fighting, a large shift in tone since last week, when the former president praise russian president vladimir putin. the former president said russia has to "stop killing these people" and suggested that a "deal could be worked out" to end the conflict. this came among scattered criticism of the biden administration's handling of the russia ukraine crisis, which served as the opening note to the state of the union address on tuesday night.
9:23 am
after trump said "something to be done with russia right now." he was asked what was the solution. the president said "you have to work out a deal. they have to stop killing all of these people. they are killing all of these people and they have to stop. they have to stop it now." that was a conversation on foxbusiness this morning. loretta is next up, from cleveland on the democrat line. good morning. caller: good morning. good morning, america. i thought the speech was fantastic last night. and i watched -- oh, her name, the republican response? i mean, if anybody see -- didn't see it, you didn't miss anything. more complaining, more whining, that type of thing. but there are a few things from
9:24 am
callers i wanted to address. people coming in, saying they received five ballots to vote -- we have to say, trump guy, dejoy, is running the post office. so it's their job to make sure they get that one that you can use. the second thing i want to talk about is the debt. when obama left, the debt was $18 trillion, 19 trillion dollars. today it is $30 trillion. thanks, trump. i would like to know what he bought. trump spent $30 trillion in four years. i don't believe it. then we got those calling in talking about the masks and schools and that -- it's ridiculous. you had to get your kids shots in order for them to go to school.
9:25 am
the mask is just to protect. i don't understand why people don't want to even protect themselves. i don't understand that. host: let's hear from mark in greenfield, indiana, on the republican line. caller: good morning. thank you, how are you doing. i would like to say, i watched the speech last night and i am 60 years old and i am like, what a joke. i cannot believe that people sit around and they just clap and clap and clap to this corrupted president. i am really blowed away. my heart goes out to the ukrainian people, but not there politicians. we know they are corrupt over there, and the one sitting on the stage last night is corrupt with them. we know this. this big money laundering place
9:26 am
over there for them -- we know this. i am really blowed away by the way people act. and i would like to put a bug in everybody's ear this morning -- excuse me -- i think we need to make donald trump speaker of the house, and that way we can impeach these two people and put them all in prison where they belong. that's just my believe. that's the only way we can save our country. host: to the independent line next, stephen and columbia, maryland. caller: good morning. thank you for taking my call. one subject that was rumored or slated to be in the president's state of the union last night was the subject of banning congresspeople from trading stocks. this is a subject that joe biden has always been consistent on while serving as a member of congress. he has never traded stocks, so i
9:27 am
find that pretty interesting. our current speaker of the house, nancy pelosi, seeking behind him -- sitting behind him last night, cannot say the same. that's an interesting subject that was not touched upon. as far as ukraine and boudin, peace to the people of ukraine and eastern europe, and i think as a collective, we need to try to forgive without condoning what is happening. but we need to forgive this person causing so much pain and suffering. let's try to forgive him without condoning his behavior. host: thanks, stephen. caller mentioned this a w hile ago, the effective burn pits on troops in iraq and afghanistan. here's what the president had to stay about that. [video clip] >> they faced many dangers, one
9:28 am
of them being stationed at bases with toxic smoke from burn pits. [applause] many of you have been there. he's burn pits incinerate waste, waste of war, medical, hazard like jet fuel and so much more. and they come home, many of the world's fittest and best trained warriors in the world, never the same. headaches, numbness, dizziness, a cancer that would put them in a flag draped coffin. i know. one of those, one of those soldiers is my son, major beau biden. i am not sure if the burn pit he lived near in iraq or earlier than that in kosovo is the cause of his brain cancer, the disease of so many other troops.
9:29 am
but i am committed to find out everything we can, committed to military families like the robinson family in ohio. he was born a soldier, army national guard, combat medic encodes kosovo and iraq. stationed in baghdad, yards from burn pits the size of football fields. then yell is here with us tonight -- danielle is here with us tonight. they loved going to ohio state football games. [applause] and they loved building legos with their daughter. but cancer from prolonged exposure to burn pits ravaged heath's lungs and body. danielle says heath was a fighter until the very end.
9:30 am
he did not know how to stop fighting, and neither does she. through her pain, she found purpose to demand that we do better. tonight, danielle, we are going to do better. the v.a. is finding new ways of linking toxic exposure to disease, helping more veterans get benefits. tonight, we are expanding eligibility to veterans suffering from nine respiratory cancers. i am also calling on congress to enact a law that veterans ravaged by toxic exposure in iraq and afghanistan finally get the help they deserve [applause] host: what stood out for me from biden's speech, every time he said he was going to help people, republicans are shaking
9:31 am
their head, saying no. that explains a lot of questions regarding why the republicans won't help people. they don't care. rose from tennessee -- when biden talked about the situation in ukraine, he didn't mention that we were all still buying oil from russia while even germany doesn't because of the crime going on there. put your money where your mouth is. this one says americans, think for yourselves. republicans and democrats on the hill are both manipulative. there were many times in biden's speech that echo the past republican president. if your loyalty is only to one party, you will hear only one way. if you become independent, it is clearly more academic and constructive for the country. the two-party system no longer works. kathy from pennsylvania. doug in cocoa, florida. go ahead. caller: good morning, america. i thought it was a very good
9:32 am
speech. it was uplifting and forward-looking. but i did want to make a comment about the republicans and putting joe biden down further withdrawal from afghanistan -- yeah, it was ugly. but you know, i haven't heard one of them say one damn thing, even though they have a damn mouth full, that the coward that surrendered and sat on his hands for months and did not do a damn thing, but no, it is all joe biden's fault. have a good day, goodbye. host: roy in california, republican line. caller: good morning. host: hi there, roy. caller: hi. i watched a little bit of the speech last night. i was rather impressed with the first part about ukraine. boy, i kind of wished i was a ukrainian citizen instead of an american citizen. democracy seems to be running
9:33 am
well there. instead of being divided states of america, i watch a, joe biden in his history through politics has been accused of plagiarism and fabrication time and time again. first off, the first part of the speech, mind you, what i said to start with, i believe. but the first part of his speech was nothing more than the democrats, russia, russia, russia. the second half of the speech, which i was totally amazed with the democrat response to the second half of the speech. it was a plagiarized trump rally speech. they used every technique that trump did to win his position, yet while he was trying to implement them, his democrat party did everything and anything possible to stop
9:34 am
everything they were for last night. now, why is that and where would our country be today if they had the same praise for the plagiarized trump rally speech that joe biden gave last night? host: next up is barbara in ohio, on the democrat line. go ahead. caller: hi. what i am calling about is, he's got a lot of plans for our future, and that's good for the people, america. i live in ohio. i moved back here after being gone for 40 years, basically, because i wanted to be buried with my parents, but i cannot believe i am in the same place. i have never seen a confederate flag in ohio when i was a child, growing up, and now i see them
9:35 am
everywhere. they said they were going to build a plant here, and it needs it. ohio needs some industry, because that's what it was always about when i was younger. until we got rid of the steel factories. but there is a lot of hate, and i think he is a wonderful man. i think he really brought the world together again and the other guy, he wanted to get us out of nato. we are going to write the check -- so ignorant, you know? it was scary. putin hollered for it. i don't understand it. are we americans? do we stick together? you don't attack your own capitol.
9:36 am
it's really frightening, and i'm glad i was alive for the earlier years of my life. and i did get to travel, i did get to live in different states, but moving back to ohio was a real awakening -- i guess it was always there, but the hate. i don't know, prejudice -- i can't understand it. no matter what joe biden does for the good of america, he could cure all illnesses and they would still hate him. there is just something, i don't know, qanon -- there was a white nationalist rally when cpac was going on. our congresspeople are there, hooting and cheering for putin. these are americans cheering for a dictator. we have them amongst us, people living amongst us, they do
9:37 am
-- you do not know if they are your next-door neighbor, for communists, dictatorship, for burning books, so much. it all goes back to hate. it all relates to that. host: barbara in ohio. let's check in with john mcardle for more. we will come to you in just a moment. we will go to john in lake geneva, wisconsin, independent line. go ahead. caller: thanks for taking my call this morning. i don't believe he cares about the border or funding police. there is an election coming up in november and this is probably his largest audience he has had since the beginning, since before he was elected two years ago. so he wanted to get his talking
9:38 am
points out. since i am from wisconsin, he might encounter more resistance today, if he comes up to superior, wisconsin to talk about the great lakes thing. there is an oil refinery and superior, and the number five pipeline goes through superior, wisconsin, which he was trying to shut down. another point i want to bring up , the 94-year-old lady from texas about her electric vehicle -- electric vehicles are good if you are going to travel 20 miles a day for work and back. if i am on a tractor-trailer, trying to go from the southern part of wisconsin to the northern part, when i get 50 miles from my destination i have to stop to charge it because it doesn't have the range. so improve that. on the voting rights thing, joe
9:39 am
manchin said yeah, we need to go back to the 2018 election rules and follow state constitutions. i don't believe there is any voter suppression going on. states are trying to firm it up so it is legal. legal people are voting, unlike new york, who made it to where illegals could vote in with -- in the state elections. host: as the caller mentioned, president biden is heading to wisconsin today. he spoke about manufacturing returning to the united states, but today we'll talk about infrastructure. here's what the president said last night. [video clip] >> there is nothing -- there is so much happening in america. the revitalization of american manufacturing. countries are choosing to build factories here, when just a few years ago they would have gone overseas.. that's what's happening
9:40 am
. ford is investing $11 billion in electric vehicles, creating 11,000 jobs across the country. gm is making the largest investment in its history, $7 billion to build electric vehicles, creating 4000 jobs in michigan. 300 69,000 new manufacturing jobs were created in america last year alone. [applause] folks, powered by people like joe burgess, in pittsburgh. where are you, jojo? thanks, buddy. [applause] >> as ohio senator sherry brown says -- [applause] sherry brown said it is time to
9:41 am
bury the label "rustbelt." it's time to see what used to be called the rustbelt become the home of significant resurgence of manufacturing. and with all the bright spots in our economy, record job growth, higher wages, too many families are struggling to keep up with their bills. inflation is robbing them of gains they thought otherwise they would be able to feel. i get it. that's why my top priority is getting prices under control. look. our economy roared back faster than almost anyone predicted, but the pandemic meant that businesses had a hard time hiring enough people because of the pandemic to keep up production in our factories. so you did not have people making those beam that went into buildingss because the
9:42 am
factories were closed. it also disrupted the global supply chain. factories were closed. look at cars last year. one third of all inflation is because of automobile sales. there were not enough semiconductors to make all the cars that people wanted to buy. guess what? the prices of automobiles went way up. especially used vehicles as well. so we have a choice. one way to fight inflation is to drive down wages and make america's poorer. i have a better idea. lower your cost, not your wages. [applause] that may make more cars and semiconductors in america, more infrastructure and innovation in america.
9:43 am
more goods moving faster and cheaper in america. more jobs where you can earn a good living in america, instead of relying on foreign supply chains, let's make it in america. host: c-span's john mcardle has been covering the aftermath of last night's speech. what you have for us? guest: remarks from the president today and wisconsin expected at 3:15 eastern time, at the yellowjacket union university of wisconsin, a superior building in wisconsin. you can watch that today on c-span. also keeping track of where the president's cabinet is headed as well, the commerce secretary is headed to m.i.t. to talk about the need for the mastic production of semiconductors and funding for essential research and development.
9:44 am
that is expected to take place this afternoon as well. the president and members of the cabinet are fanning outpost state of the union to talk about the message, and the message, at least the first 10 minutes of the message last night, was on the issue of ukraine. just a couple tweets on that, it was yesterday before the state of the union that president biden had a phone conversation with president zelenskyy of ukraine. this is a tweet in which he talked about that phone call with the president, tweeting as russia continues its unprovoked invasion of ukraine, he had that phone call with president biden, and president biden also tweeting out about that conversation, american leadership on the anti-russian sanctions and assistance of
9:45 am
ukraine was discussed. president zelensky said in his tweet, thank you for your support. tweeting to president biden. and some reaction from around the world, here is newspapers from around the world. from qatar, al jazeera, ukraine inflation, biden stated the union, their timeline from it. the guardian newspaper out from the united kingdom, the state of union, a moment of unity dissolved in partisan feuding, the headline they went with. biden vows to tackle putin, inflation in his state of the union. one last one from the bangkok post, some of the english
9:46 am
language headlines from around the world. host: 15 more minutes until the house comes in at 10:00 eastern. from the washington post, humanitarian defensive aid to ukraine. let's hear from florida, ken on the line. democrat line. go ahead. caller: yes, i thought the speech was very good last night. the only thing that disgusted me, when i was watching a certain news channel afterwards, all they wanted to do was break it down and keep us all separated apart again. republicans and democrats have got to learn to come together. as far as the speech this morning from trump denouncing all this, i would not put it past him him and prudent being in bed together, trying to figure out a way to get trump back into office by having him come over and stop this war. host: from south carolina, eddie
9:47 am
on the independent line. caller: thank you for taking my call. i like the tweet earlier from kathy about becoming independence. the two-party system is broken. i would also like to talk about the state of the union last night, when biden, joe said that we are united. we are the furthest thing from united. listen to the calls this morning. we are very much divided. c-span, you contribute to that by giving republican and democrat lines. i am old enough to remember when we did not have different lines for republicans and democrats when they called in, and i think you need to go back to that. this back and forth, you are falling for the woke society where oh gosh, we have to help everybody. i don't go back and forth, just answer the phone. the last thing i want to ask you, what is 30 trillion,
9:48 am
subtract 18 trillion. what is that? 30 -18? host: 12 trillion. caller: there you go. with obama, the debt was 18 trillion when it got out. we are at $30 trillion, because we spent over $6 trillion last year under biden. we spent $6 trillion under the republicans as well, that got us into debt. we have to stop paying people not to work so we can use the covid thing to steal elections, that's what happened last time. i am an independent. thank you very much. host: and as to your point about how we separated by calls, we have done it the same way for many, many years. we do it different ways, sometimes regionally, and take the calls as they come in. sometimes there are a number of democratic callers, sometimes a number of republican callers.
9:49 am
we try to balance out the points of view on the program. thanks for your point, however. chicago heights, illinois, brandon on the democrat line. caller: good morning. thank god for the gentleman before the last gentleman, who said that trump and pugin are probably in bed together. i agree. who knows what would be happening in ukraine right now had trump still been in office? i think putin would have been fighting in ukraine, but as far as medication goes, the price of this medicine, i am a diabetic. some of my brothers and sisters, the insulin is ridiculous. the price of it. i agree with joe, it's coming
9:50 am
down. someone in the pharmaceutical industry is greasing their pockets with this money. it's ridiculous. the left and the right need to come together. somehow, so we can get this machine moving. if one part doesn't work, the other part of the work. joe biden is a wonderful and clear minded president. host: towards the end of his speech, the president returns to the theme of unity, coming together on issues. here is president biden last night. [video clip] >> we are the only nation on earth who has turned every crisis we have faced into an opportunity. the only nation that can be defined by single words, possibilities. so i have come to report on the state of the nation, the state of the union, and my report is
9:51 am
this. the state of the union is strong because you, the american people, are strong. [applause] we are stronger today, we are stronger today than we were a year ago. and we will be stronger a year from now then we are today. this is our moment. we have overcome the challenge of our time and we will be one america, the united states of america. god bless you all and may god protect our troops. thank you, go get him. host: onto calls, with nelson in pembroke
9:52 am
pines, florida, republican line. good morning. caller: good morning. i listened to the speech last night, and what struck me were the things biden did not talk about. he did not mention the americans that are still hiding in afghanistan, our former allies in afghanistan still trying to get out of the country. the oil he talked about, regarding russia and the oil, he did not mention that the united states is still buying oil from russia, thus helping russia. for every barrel of oil we do not produce in this country, we end up having to buy from russia or iran or opec. he did not mention any of those things.
9:53 am
the crisis at the border continues. with all due respect to the president of the united states, his speech was a feel-good type of speech, but it did not have the kinds of changes that were needed in the united states of america in the first place. i would like to point out that all those electric vehicles were produced with hazardous waste, which will be the batteries that will eventually die out and have to be disposed of, that has not been mentioned. also, the recharging of all of those electric vehicles, we will have to produce the electricity in order to charge those very vehicles.
9:54 am
there is a lot of gaps there and i am disappointed that there was not more substance. thank you very much. host: let's check it one more time with john mcardle on last night's speech. guest: the house getting ready to come in in just a couple minutes. the senate coming in today at 11:00 a.m. eastern time. we talked a bit today about president biden's nominee for the supreme court, ketanji brown jackson, meeting with members of the judiciary committee. a lot going on on capitol hill. one other thing we are trying to find out about, lindsey graham, the republican senator from south carolina. his press conference today on the senate resolution calling for vladimir putin and his regime to be held accountable for the numerous acts of war, aggression, and human rights that have been conducted under his watch. lindsey graham is also a member
9:55 am
of the senate judiciary committee, so he is one of those folks who may be meeting with president biden for the supreme court nominee. that's just some of the reaction from members of congress. you saw all the reaction last night on twitter. members of congress waking up this morning and amplifying the messages they want to talk about . here are a few more. congressman adam schiff, the democrat from california. last night, president biden laid out his plan to end gun violence. he said to keep cracking down on the reckless gun dealers and manufacturers by repealing their liability shield. my equal access to justice for victims of gun violence act does that, the congressman said. from new jersey, congressman josh gottheimer, his tweet this morning to the house, the senate and the president on bipartisan support to fund, not defund the police.
9:56 am
the moderate democrat from new jersey. this tweet as well, from jodey arrington, a republican, saying biden's speech was empty and intellectually dishonest and his rhetoric was that disconnected from reality -- was as disconnected from reality as his policies are from the needs of the american people. one more tweet from last night, last night, the president doubled down on his irresponsible, destructive policies and fuel skyrocketing inflation amid american energy dependence undermining our defense, creating an uncontrollable border crisis and weakened our domestic and national security. some messages from members of congress this morning. if you stay through c-span -- on c-span throughout the day, you will see more. host: as john talked about earlier in a report on the texas primary, this is our own greg kaplan, tweeting this about long
9:57 am
time stalled work on the house floor. louie gohmert from texas losing his primary race last night to become the state attorney general. there will be a runoff between ken paxton, the ag, and george p. bush in that race. ghomert plans to continue representing his district in texas, which includes tyler and longview, until 2023. up next, mark on the independent line. caller: good morning. putin had taken territory from ukraine. under bush, he took georgia, under obama he took crimea, and now he is taking the don bass. he did not take any territory when trump was president. every day, biden also gives putin $70 billion in oil money.
9:58 am
that's a decision he is making and i know how we can fix that. in general, i am resentful of the fact that they took the mask mandate off. right before the state of the union, when they are saying the polls are changing and the american political party preference poll, there was a 14% swing, plus nine democrats to plus 4% gop. i think it's pretty big. democrats are seeing that. but i resent the fact that the mask mandate is off. biden has not wanted to go over the past year because it was more like a state of the ukraine instead of the state of the union, because in the union for the past year, some things biden has done, he had his first press conference and had that sheet sheet with the reporters
9:59 am
and the questions they would call. he had them in a book and there was a picture of it. in may, he said america is divided between those who are vaccinated and those who are not. it goes on and on, afghanistan. host: one more quick comment as the u.s. house is coming in, barbara in akron, ohio. a brief comment because we are about to run out of line. caller: i think president biden is doing the best he can. we need to work on our border and the one thing, patty -- daddy bush gave our jobs away to china years ago. i have been through three of these things. i remember i lost my mother as a
10:00 am
child to tuberculosis, and here we have our president that was in a wheelchair -- host: i will let you go there. we had to wrap up the program. the u.s. house coming in next with live coverage on c-span. we will see you tomorrow morning. speaker. the clerk: the speaker's rooms, washington, d.c. march 2, 2022. i hereby appoint the honorable james p. mcgovern to act as speaker pro tempore on this day. signed, nancy pelosi, speak of the house of representatives. the speaker pro tempore: pursuant to the order of the house of january 10, 2022, the chair will now recognize members from lists submitted by the majority and minority leaders for morning hour debate. the chair will alternate recognition between the parties. with time equally allocated between the parties and each member other than the majority and minority leaders and minority whip limited to five minutes. but in no event shall debate continue beyond 11:50a.
