here's a bit of president biden had to say. as bang our democracy has been tested in recent years but with their votes, the american people have spoken proving once again democracy is who we are. the states across the country's record voter turnout and the heart and solve our democracy, the voters, poll workers, election officials, they did their job and fulfill their duty. apparently witout much interfeer -- without interference. i think that's a testament to the american people. while we don't know all the results yet, i don't know, here's what we do know, while the press and pundits are predicting their giant red wave, it did not happen. i know you were's -- were somewhat myth by my optimism but ifo good during the whole
10:35 am
process. i thought we would do fine. whiny c loss is painful, some good democrats did not win last night, democrats had a strong night. we lost fewer seats in house representatives than any democratic president's first midterm election in the last 40 years area -- ears. we have the best term for governor since 1986. we also know voters spoke clearly about their concerns. about raising costs, rising costs and need to get inflation down. there are a lot of people hurting, very concerned. it's about crime and public safety. they want to preserve our democracy and protect the right to choose in this country. host: president biden speaking from the white house. we will show you more about what he had to say threat the course of this three-hour show. a three-hour show where we focus mostly on your phone calls as we

ask what message did voters send on election day. on lines, democrats (202) 748-8000, republicans (202) 748-8001, independents (202) 748-8002. more postmortem analysis, this coming from senator ted cruz of texas, the republican on sean hannity show last night. this is the message he said voters sent. [video clip] >> if you look across the country at the republicans winning, they are the ones standing up and leaving as conservatives. ron johnson who just won in a purple state has been a strong conservative, mike lee in utah has been a strong conservative, he won. you have governors like desantis and greg abbott and brian kemp all of whom one big victories. i think there's a lesson that we standing governance conservatives, we win. that is what we need to be doing. why do the democrats do better than expected? because for two years they
10:37 am
governed as liberals, as whacked out lefty not jobs and that excited their base. that excited yvonne's of young voters came out in massive numbers because when you actually stand for something, your base gets excited. there's a lesson for republicans. when we have a majority next year, we better hold and use it. we need to be happy warriors. if we do that, that leads to victory. if we do not stand and fight, we do not win. host: senator ted cruz last night on sean hannity show. give you more reaction from folks who work in that building behind me. we mostly want to hear from you this morning, what message did voters send on election day? katie is out first out of, ohio, line for democrats, good morning. caller: good morning. i was very upset. i am a democrat, i was very hopeful that ryan would at least
10:38 am
get in. our ohio supreme were judges, democrats did not get in, and because of the redistricting and gerrymandering we are going on in the state, we don't really have a chance here as democrats. it's getting to the place for me that why would you put a man in light j.d. vance? he's not ready for the senate. this is what happened. i'm keeping on. i'm knocking to stop voting and we've got to do better as democrats in the state because in the house, senate, we got 27 republicans and only six democrats. so we gotta get busy. this is not working for us. thank you. host: that is sandy out of columbus. jim, you are next.
10:39 am
caller: good morning. the lesson here is the democrats have to get their act together. you gotta go more to the center. we are being disenfranchised because there are climate change puppeteers and they don't care about the rising cost of goods and services. we are suffering high inflation, increasing ageist rates, food insecurity, and all this talk about abortion, climate change, they need to get off course and get back to the american people, especially as moderate democrats we have been disenfranchised and high that -- hijacked by the radicals. the message to the democratic party, get your act together and get back to the center like bill clinton. host: lines for democrats, republicans, and

independents as we talk about the midterm elections. the midterm elections are not over yet. still a runoff race in georgia that a lot of attention will be paid to because it could decide control of the united states senate. senator rafael warnock with 100% reporting out of georgia. herschel walker, the republican 40 5%. the, you need percent plus one vote to win that election is talking more about runoff later today yesterday was georgia's secretary of state brad raffensperger talking about the state with for the runoff election. here is one had to say. [video clip] >> our office is beginning the behind-the-scenes work to build balance. pallets are being built as we speak. and counties are making preparations. process this ethics, voters can
10:41 am
request absentee ballots now through monday 20. there are 100,000 voters on our absentee ballots list. these people are the 65 or disabled. early voting must begin no later than monday, november 28 in all counties. we do anticipate some counties are likely to have saturday voting following thanksgiving as well as november 26. we are working with the counties to find out what their plans are on this front and as soon as possible so voters can make the best plans. this will be a heavy lift for our counties because it is a four-week runoff period but i've confidence they will take all the measures required to rise to the task. host: brad raffensperger, secretary of state from georgia,

he won reelection tuesday and now has to run an election for the united states senate, a runoff election december 6, all eyes go to the peach state again. your phone calls this morning, what message did voters send on election day, elizabeth in maryland, independent. what you think? caller: we want democrats in office. we do not want trump ever again because democrats and biden have helped the american people so much over the last four years. bidens can run in 2024 and game a similar -- covid package, child tax credit for women and children, and all kinds of wonderful things and now he's a the conference in egypt. we want democrats, we don't republicans. we don't want trump ever again. host: are you still gonna feel that way if has these dozens of house races come in if republicans and up taking the
10:43 am
house? caller: that will be terrible but i will still vote for biden in 2024. i will keep being a democrat and independent. host: that is elizabeth on our line for independents. this is kathy in arkansas. good morning. caller: good morning. host: go ahead. caller: our elections in arkansas were pretty bad. we are going to be the lowest state for education again. we are also going to be considered one of the where states in the country if you ever want any rights or laws passed or anything for the voters. our state is so full of gerrymandering that it is so horrible a lot of people are considering leaving just because it is a horrible place to live now. after these elections, even my family and the rest of the people in my community are considering leaving the state because it is just not worth staying here, especially when
10:44 am
the democrats are not even listed as maybe 20% of the vote but we are more than that but we don't have enough people voting against them to stop it. so it looks like arkansas is going to be in the pits of hell again for another year -- another four years so hopefully we can get out of it and get democrats elected. host: that's kathy out of arkansas, asking you to give us a call and send us your thoughts on social media about what the message was from election day tuesday. what the midterm elections mean. here is foxley writing in this morning, saying the message was 177 more mega republicans endorsed by president trump are in government now then were last week, thank you, beautiful america is what foxley rights. opec saying i'm grateful to the young people for voting. i've lots of them see collect --
10:45 am
i hope lots of them seek elected office in the future. kathy in iowa, we americans take our democracy seriously and are not ready to go any further down the path of crazy conspiracies was the message she said. greg saying we want checks and balances that our country was designed to have. we do not want either party to have total control. vote purple is what greg writes on facebook. a few of the comments via social media, also looking for your phone calls. democrats, (202) 748-8000, republicans (202) 748-8001, and independents (202) 748-8002. also showing you rests from yesterday and ase it for more results to come in, we will keep you updated as the associated rest calls these races -- because these races. those are the numbers we usually use here on the "washington journal". the associated press making t call yesterday they got a lot of attention in your, their 17th --

in new york, 17's district. sean patrick maloney was beat at 49 part 4% for the congressman. the congressman also the head of the democratic congressional campaign committee this cycle, it was his job to run the races and consider the strategy for democrats in this midterm election cycle. he ended up losing his own election, a victory republicans were celebrating yesterday and it was sean patrick maloney who discussed tuesday night's results at a press conference yesterday from the trip was a in washington, d.c.. [video clip] >> a short while ago i spoke to my opponent, michael lawler, and congratulated him on a good win. and i pledged my support to him in transitioning this congressional seat so people we serve in the hudson valley don't have any interruptions in the
10:47 am
service they deserve. i also took a call from the president and expressed our appreciation for his leadership on the issues that matter to the american people, and i said to him what i hope every american will see that last night, house democrats stood our ground. we believe november 8, 2020 two will be a signature day in american political history. and we hope the high watermark of some of the anger and division that we have dealt with this entire cycle from january 6 on through, and we hope for
10:48 am
something better for our country because that is what all americans deserve. we are still working and any fair person and responsible observer should understand it will take time to understand all of the races and their outcomes. i just told you what happened in mine and we will tell you what happens in each of them, fairly and each of them, transparently, but we don't know what the outcome will be in the minimum of a couple dozen reasons. -- races. we do not know where the dust will settle but i can tell you there will be a to handle and probably a lot better than that. host: sean patrick maloney there yesterday after calling his republican opponent, beating the race, and with that as steve connect he of msnbc notes, with
10:49 am
his concession, sean patrick maloney becomes the first campaign sheep to lose reelection since the year 1992 when the national republican congressional committee chair guy vendor chat was defeated in a michigan republican primary. a little history there from steve core nike. taking your phone calls this morning asking you what message did voters send on election day. dylan, line for republicans out of south dakota, good morning. caller: good morning. say we got a governor -- our governor back. we voted on the campus about two years ago and it passed then and now it did not, 47 to 43. then they went ahead and voted bang her back in has the governor. i do not understand that.
10:50 am
i'm a disabled that and i know a lot of veterans that use cannabis, so i don't know what to think about this mass we got here, and during a bike rally, nobody wore a mask or anything else and she was acting like it was not a big deal. but a lot of people have died in south dakota too of the virus. but i appreciate everybody in their comments. i watched c-span all the time so i appreciate y'all, god bless you. host: calling in from south dakota. mentioned cannabis, there were several ballot measures yesterday in various states on the issue of marijuana and specifically recreational marijuana, missouri one of the states that approved recreational marijuana, maryland another one. this is the story from the washington times in maryland,
10:51 am
the law said to going to fact july 2023 for those 21 and over, just a couple states that had recreational marijuana on the ballot this year. andrew out of new jersey, independent, good morning. you are next. what was the message voters sent tuesday? caller: we hope that the message we vote that we will have an open government, more transparent because our founding fathers created checks and balances so that nobody could be above the law and that includes the president of the united states. they work for us. we do not work for them. somehow they forgot that message a long time ago. there is too much money in politics. there is dark money in politics, and where we the people are represented, that is what i would love to know. host: andrew out of new jersey,
10:52 am
this is veronica out of pennsylvania, democrat, good morning. caller: good morning. i can't agree more with what the gentleman from new jersey just said. i'm a former new jersey in, came out here to take care of my aging parents, and i was shocked to find out i had to register with the party and not be an independent. i would not be able to vote because there are closed primaries here. i voted democrat just because i had to vote for one party or the other. i wish we would have open primaries. that is the message of people sent and i am 81.5 years old and very smart and i have a postgraduate agree from rockers university and i follow everything and i am a reader and have an iphone. my messages that young people
10:53 am
turned out to vote, more than expected thank heavens. this is the future. they are voting across party lines and more in conjunction with policy. i think that is what they ought to be doing. we should not be driven by personality and not looking at what the personality stands for. we should be voting for the issues that affect our community so i think the young people give me a lot of hope. i think c-span. host: what did you think about the senate race, all eyes on the senate races in your stay as one of the key races? it loo like 97% reporting in pennsylvania, the john fetterman, the lieutenant governor, the race has been called for him. looks like he will win by about four percentage points. caller: i am happy as a lark about that. dr. oz had no business in
10:54 am
politics. in the south when i lived for a couple years, they were called carpet bags, they came down from the north and people don't like it when outsiders come in and pretend to be, investing their own interest. dr. oz, because i'm very interested in nutrition, i have been following it since my mother. i'm the daughter of german immigrants that came here in the twin wars and the germans early on were interested in nutrition, what works and what does not. dr. oz impressed me when i looked into all of the things he developed on his show, it is what we used to call a snake oil salesman. i think the rest of the republicans felt the same way
10:55 am
too. i say good luck to the senator elect and maybe we will get something done if we can just speak out more than 50-50 in the senate. it would be nice if we had more of a lead just to see what would happen. the democrats -- are the democrats would room miraculously do some more but i'm thinking president biden -- host: if they win out three of the outstanding races, it would be 51 to 49 and that is a big if if they comply in all three of these outstanding races. caller: for 50-50, we can break the tie. hope we get a little more control just to see what can happen. it may be of democrats can more power they blow it and i will be
10:56 am
one of the first since my party for the sake of voting a responsible republican in. i used to have friends that were republicans. when i lived in new jersey, they were -- they were liberal republicans running as conservative democrats. i wish we would go back to those days. host: veronica out of pennsylvania. let's keep the conversation going out of -- keep the conversation going. what was your views on federman and them in oz? caller: i voted for fenn -- federman. host: why? caller: because men that oz is a money rubber. host: what you think the message was on tuesday? caller: i don't know but what i would like to say is i would like to hear pelosi jokes about beating her husband up with a hammer. it is disgusting. is that all right to say? caller: it is your time to talk,
10:57 am
jack. anything else you want to add? caller: we need to get rid of trump. host: that is jack in pennsylvania. speaking of donald trump, it is aaron blake in this morning's washington post with his takeaways from election night and donald trump was number three of his five takeaways, six in the online version. the story in the washington post today noting after his loss donald trump set about throwing his weight around in the gop premise -- primary to reinforce he was still in charge, he wound up getting sly candidates to the primaries. each of the four senate tulsa braces featuring trump backed candidates and with the potential exception of nevada, each candidate has had an image problem. if republicans do not take the senate, there will be a reckoning over how that happened. speaking of oz he writes oz's
10:58 am
loss is the biggest blow because he probably would not have won his close primary without donald trump. herschel walker was not a good candidate but trump put him on a -- for them nomination. also voters were reluctant to cast ballot in each case. it is abundantly clear republicans would have had a better shot if they put forward a better or generic candidates. aaron blake, his story, the takeaways from election 2022. donald trump also looming over the press conference that president biden held yesterday. he was asked about the possibility of donald trump returning to the presidency once again. he was his response. [video clip] >> the conversation side to your predecessor who is about to launch another campaign. how do you reassure them that is the reason for their questioning that the former president will
10:59 am
not return, that his political movement which is very strong will not take power in the united states? >> oya? [laughter] we have to demonstrate he will not take power. by if he does run making sure he under legitimate efforts of our constitution does not become the next president again. host: president biden yesterday at this press conference he held at the white house. a lot of discussion about president trump and the state papers, former president trump, and what he can mean in 2024, especially if the governor of florida, ron desantis, as a front against him in the republican primary. this is the op-ed from usa today by ingrid who writes let the santas in trunk, let that race begin for 2024. if you want to read her column in usa today. let's go to florida, mulberry, molly, republican.
11:00 am
your thoughts tuesday. caller: well i'm from florida and i would have to say i am super proud of my state. we stand for freedom and our own independence and making our own decisions. i guess only thing i have to say about all of it, if you look at pennsylvania who is taking ballots without dates, without signatures, you look at arizona where two days after an election we still do not have results. for two years we have been called election deniers, called horrible names, but i want to ask, couldn't the states do a little better on getting results in and reassuring the voters our elections are free and fair? that is really all i have to say about it. i think it is crazy we are waiting to, three, we, a month later to find out who it is. i remember being a little girl looking at the tv seeing the results that day, notion ending ends, and now i've lost faith.
11:01 am
in our elections that i do not think we should be this many days on an election but it is so important and we are still wondering. host: to your point, it was your senator, marco rubio, who tweeted yesterday afternoon florida can count 7.5 million ballots in five hours, how can it take days were some states count less than 2 million ballots. caller: i agree. that is just it. i think because the way some of the concern about elections and even take that off the table, i think every state could do a little better job on getting their votes in, getting there counts right, the not verifying who you are, you have to verify who you are to do everything. i think that is silly. i think elections should go back to how they used to be. we should resource states in our system. that way there is not the down the mind of ok it has taken
11:02 am
three days, did they win? it should be closed doors. this is so important. it is the most important thing to have as americans. host: before you go since i have you from florida, what are your thoughts on this question ross brings up in his column today and new york times, he as the question, is desantis now the 24 gop front-runner? what you think? caller: my personal opinion on that is i love president trump and i love governor ron desantis but i feel like evan ron desantis made a commitment to the people of florida. i do not think it would be right for him to than change his mind. he would not have my vote in 2024 but i would love to vote for him afterwards. not saying trump has my vote, i'm saying ron desantis made a commitment to us and i feel like he should fulfill his commitment. host: molly, a republican in
11:03 am
florida. chris out of chatsworth, good morning. caller: yes, sir. i was curious to see how it was going to go and vote for marcus flowers. host: against marjorie taylor greene? still with us, chris? caller: -- host: we lost chris. to mike in massachusetts, democrat, good morning. caller: good morning, sir. been a long time but i would like to get into this. i think donald trump is the best person that has ever happened to the democratic party. number one. we won after his first term as a president, we won everything from the presidency device presidency, house and senate, and in the midterm elections this year, i say thanks to donald trump's influence.
11:04 am
he gave the democrats, which has normally been a shellacking in the midterms, we did very well when you consider everything. i also believe donald trump, much of his life, was a gung ho democrat. deep down inside, if we put politics aside, i do not think he hates the democrats at all. in fact, again, i don't want to be repetitive but he is the best thing that's happened to us. host: you want him to run in 2024? caller: i wouldn't mind hearing from them. i think he should stay in the limelight because he had two big defeats. he should give it a shot and not give up his ship. i don't think he can win but i think he would, again, if he runs in 2024, it again would help the democrats. host: that is mike out of
11:05 am
massachusetts. this is michael, germantown, north carolina, republican, go ahead. caller: good morning. getting back to senator lee -- senator federman from pennsylvania, the debate between him and dr. oz, i realized he is a stroke victim, he has a fib, but he is the worst candidate they could have ever put up but nonetheless the democrats are so repetitive i guess you might say because i see on the television this morning that they even voted for a state senator. how pitiful could that be? inflation running away. high gas prices, but yet they would rather turn their
11:06 am
attention to abortion, killing babies, rather than look out for the economy that we now are suffering from. host: so you say he is the worst candidate but he one. caller: i understand that. that's because the democrats in pennsylvania need a little education. they like high prices there. he said he was against fracking and then he gets on the debate and he don't even know where he is at. he could not even explain why he said he was against fracking. i've never seen a man in a condition such as he is and those people from pennsylvania, they elected him to go and represent them? he can't even -- he can't even read without a teleprompter. how pitiful to have a u.s. senator that you are depending on to make the right laws, the
11:07 am
right decisions, and he is going to need someone to direct him and the way he should go. host: michael at a north carolina this morning. michael brings up the issue of abortion as part of his comments , two conservative editorial boards today doing a bit of a postmortem as well on the midterm elections. we start with the washington times, the headline there, lead editorial, what to make of the red wave that never materialized. they write abortion is more of a salient issue to women and young voters than many in the gop realized. they also write additionally the woke youth vote finally turned out in many tulsa prices spurred by ballot measures like the legalization of recreational marijuana, the affirmation abortion righteous you and lgbtq protection. republicans never thought they would win the huge vote, they just never estimated how badly they were going to lose it. that from the washington times editorial board.
11:08 am
then to the wall street journal editorial board and another concern on the editorial board, this headline from their lead editorial, the gop midterm failure, they write abortion hurt but the larger failure is the gop nominated too many lousy candidates who courted donald trump more than voters. they said his ego about the stolen 2020 election but then will vulnerable to democratic attacks. they write democrats threaten democracy. all of this is a recipe for two years of gridlock in washington, they write, which beats the progressive binge since january 2021. if you want to read the lead editorials from the wall street journal and washington tim today's papers. bacteria phone calls, iis a little after 7:30. spending our entire program this morning asking you a message did voters send on election day? rachel out of massachusetts, independent, what do you think?
11:09 am
caller: good morning. what i think is the young ones that voting more, they do not care about gas, they don't care about anything. they only care about is keep killing the babies. i think they have to go back to the birds and the bees to figure out how they get pregnant but that was i think the top one, which makes me -- i come from a family of 17. i am the 17th. everybody got a job, everybody was in the service. if they did a poll on why they voted bang, i would bet that was top of the list. host: that was rachel out of massachusetts, west virginia, republican. this is lloyd. caller: good morning. i would like to say that the
11:10 am
democrats ought to be happy, they still keep their high prices at the gas pump and other grocery store and all living expenses and take away peoples 401(k) plan that worked hard all their life and they still got open borders and they are allowed, get up and smile, look in the mirror every morning and smile because they can still kill the babies. i would like to know how joe biden cannot be impeached because a man that swears to protect the country and the constitution and he's got another thing coming across the board or he has in there has not and another president in the united states that would make that happen in this country. that is what i got to say. thank you. caller: on the abortion -- host: on the abortion issue.
11:11 am
now on the election, that effect was real, voters angry about the row overturn and they turned out to protect abortion. pond and people forgot about and they turned out to protect abortion. pond and people forgot about and pro-choice politicians said differently. i was salon.com with that headline. you can see now on your screen. to marilyn, this is upper marble maryland, democrat, good morning. caller: good morning. i personally feel the republic -- republican party is out of touch with today. the voters went to the polls and they gave a clear message that even though the red wave may be right in some cases, they are really out of touch with what is in reality today. i personally feel, even though i am a democrat, i am also a veteran that ron desantis is a
11:12 am
breath of fresh air for the republican party. the republican party should recognize that he has created a model state in florida and and we have something about mike pence. why is people not talking about vice president mike pence who had to go behind the scenes and clear up and clean up a lot of the messes president trump made? i think him and ron desantis on the ticket for the republican party will be a breath of fresh air and we need leaders who will unify our country, not divide our nation. in terms of security, we cannot ignore the social issues in our country because they are important but the republican party continues to ignore the millennials, the younger voters. our young people care about our
11:13 am
democracy and our nation. so the republican party really needs to come to the center and really needs to be the party of the future and not the out of touch and only take away taxes for the 1% who are wealthy. the 1% does not constitute america. america is the poor, needy, and middle-class more. why should i be taxed and why should the rich not have to pay taxes at all? host: you mentioned mike pence, expect a hear more about mike pence in the coming days and weeks. he is about to drop a new book, so help me god is the title of the book. has published filler -- his publisher, that already coming out about some of what he has revealed in the new book.
11:14 am
so help me god is the title of that. this is sean staying in baltimore, maryland. an independent. caller: good day to you. i want to piggyback off what the last caller said. first, i want to say that the republicans, like the last caller said, better get their mind right. i voted republican down the ticket in maryland but i have to say they made some dumb choices. they need to pick good candidates. they gotta pick good people. i don't know why the world they would pick dan cox. even though i voted for my new he was not going to win, he trump republican is not going to win in maryland area that goes to the crazy lady in kari lake, the crazy republican in pennsylvania. he picked these far right lunatic people.
11:15 am
you need to get in touch. you gotta pick a good candidate, pick a moderate. that is the only way they are to win. i went through publicans to take control because the democrats are even worse. they are even worse and i hope the republicans see the goldmine they got in ron desantis. to the woman in florida, i know you wanted to see your governor, sorry, he's got to be the president because the republicans really think trump -- duncan me wrong, there are things i like about trump but i'm sorry, his time is over. he is a lunatic, he's got to go. he is the past. he is a lunatic. if the republicans want to take the right house -- white house in 2024, they better put ron desantis on the ticket and better pick a woman for the vice president. maybe the lady from south dakota, i can't think of her name. i think she would be a good

person to run with ron desantis. host: are you talking about kristi noem, the republican? in your state of maryland. you are talking about the governor raced, wes moore, the democrat beating dan cox, the republican, beating him by more than 20 points. there is a picture of him in today's new york times. wes moore said to be the first black governor of maryland and some discussion about what his future might hold. your thoughts on wes moore? caller: trash. maryland is already ran by far leftist democrats in the state house and state senate. i do not care if he is the first black man. i'm a blackman but no, just because he's black does not mean he will make my life better. it is about the mindset, it is about what is in his mind. he will rubberstamp every far left democrat.
11:17 am
i have five years until retirement and i tell you, i'm out of this state. i'm so angry with the maryland republicans because larry hogan had a woman, i can't think of her name, in the republican primary. she would have the wes moore but they gotta pick the far right dan cox we have wes moore that will just rubberstamp everything from democrats. we have too many far left democrats. same as maryland, maryland will become an loc. host: sean out of baltimore. wes moore becoming the first by governor of maryland, the new york times with some of the other winners who broke barriers along the way tuesday night. summer lee from pennsylvania, 12
11:18 am
district, the first african-american woman ever elected to congress, the keystone state, katie britt, the first woman elected to the senate from alabama and further up the page, sarah huckabee sanders of arkansas and her lieutenant governor, the first woman elected to those offices at the same time in the natural state of arkansas. let's go to those who broke barriers on tuesday, back to your phone calls, this is gerard out of new york, republican, good morning. caller: how are you doing? i just want to piggyback on your last caller who called -- what was her name? i can think of her name. i'm sorry.
11:19 am
blake clark or something? is that her name? host: just go ahead with what you're talking about their gerard. what is your comment? caller: he said she is a loser and he was going off on her but i happen to think she is a very intelligent woman and she should have one. she was should have one. and donald trump, as bad as he was with his mouth and stupid things you said, he had this country humming on eight cylinders. he did a good job. but if you governors twitter, he was an idiot. i guess that is all i have to say.
11:20 am
host: is that out on long island? caller: yes. host: republicans doing well on long island in the house races. caller: yeah, they did really well. host: how are they able to do that this time around after democrats usually dominated when it comes to new york city politics? caller: i think people just wanted a change. lee zelman should have one too but we got another four years of hochul. that is a crime. but yeah, they did good. people wanted a change, people wanted something different. host: bayview wil -- bayville on the long island sound. our next caller is democrat, good morning. caller: good morning. i want to speak about who has
11:21 am
hardly been mentioned it seems all morning long, the young votes was astronomical and that is why the democrats had so much victory but they did not get out and vote for the abortions. they got out and voting because they see what's going on with their world, the climate. it's the only one that -- of our whole population that have to look forward to a burning down world. i'm sorry if i had to say this but who cares what happens with trump? it does not matter. i hope we get republicans in their that have a brain and understand we've got to do something. worldwide, by the way. we're going to have a decibel in the middle of america. if you get out there, it is absolutely dried out.
11:22 am
let's talk about the real problems, not whether or not trump is going to run. i don't even want to say it, but anyway, that is what i gotta say. host: you think it is appropriate the president, the speaker headed to the climate conference, the top 27 find a conference, even a day after midterm election in the united states, that is where they should be talking about climate and the world? caller: absolutely. has to be done and fast. they are nailing everything down because they want to bring in more fast be railing. doing a great job too. the kids are rolling around on those little things all over the place. they don't want to pollute.
11:23 am
host: i think we're losing you but got your point. from speaker pelosi's office yesterday, she is leading the congressional delegation to the united nations framework convention on climate change 27 conference, the parties as it is called in egypt. that is members of the delegation including several chairs of key congressional committees including the chair of the house energy and commerce committee ways and means committee, the foreign affairs committee and others, that no from nancy pelosi's office. this is francine in new york, independent, good morning. caller: good morning. thank you for having this discussion. i think it is very worthy of having something like this on television. i am an independent, i feel that we as americans need to educate ourselves through many methods and not only on television.
11:24 am
there are 70 forms of media today. i am in my mid-50's so as an independent, i looked to look and educate myself. i feel a major problem in the world today in our country is the loss of family and i feel the democratic party has destroyed the family. i feel that is really what they're getting too because when you destroy the family, you destroy how people think and so forth. in the schools, these children are taught many things at the secular world and that is the young vote they got out to vote. the young voters are selfish and are not thinking about the future of our country. living in new york, crime is a major issue. these people get out on a cashless veil. it is terrible.
11:25 am
i fear for my children that go into the city. i love manhattan, love new york, but i do not like the city and how it is with crime, it is terrible. it is rampant, and in our schools we need to get back to basics. teach these children reading and math and that is a problem right now. it is the destruction of the family. people being selfish and name-calling. we need to get back to focus on what is good for all of us as a country and i feel democrats as an independent looking out have destroyed that, have become name colors, and obama was the one who caused people to be -- the division. it has nothing to do with trump and that and they project a lot. looking on it, on both parties, that is why i like being an independent because i'm going to educate myself and not listen to others. host: down to the sunshine state, this is fran in
11:26 am
jacksonville, democrat, good morning. caller: good morning, john. i'm calling because the person talking about how they are proud florida can count because we can finish up our elections so soon. well yeah, i guess we get an a for accounting and i will use a trump phrase, disanto money is. he certainly can count because he is disenfranchising so many black people in florida. my district, for one, we had a representative but the governor personally drew the map and now, at least three of our districts have been compiled or emanated where we don't even have a vote anymore. we can vote but it does not really count because they know
11:27 am
how to count and know how to put things together so the count comes out the way they want. so people praising ron desantis -- host: you talk about redistricting, what about the statewide vote for governor in which ron desantis got 1.5 million more votes than the democrat? caller: i'm thinking he's done it again, going out there -- i think that is because he is using the christian card. i'm a christian. i'm 71 years old and i am a christian and i think the worst thing that could happen to america is this christian nationalism because that is not america. america was created for separation of church and state, people coming here thinking they
11:28 am
could worship anyway they want and now we want to go against the american idea that it has got to be a question nation. now we want christians to be in america and we want more people to be christian and jesus would want people to be christian but he's not going to make them be christian. host: that is fran in florida, speaking of florida, a focus in the new york times on some of the new members that will be joining the 118th congress. one from florida, maxwell alejandro frost. a liberal member of generation z at 25 the right frost won his seat, the first year he was eligible to run for the house positioning him to become the first member of congress from his generation to serve. he will replace val deming of florida, the democrat who left the orlando area seat in the ill-fated senate run against marco. he pledged to support several liberal policies including
11:29 am
medicare for all, legalization of marijuana, the green new deal, and expanding the number of justices seated on the u.s. supreme court. another one of those new faces that the new york times focuses on is john james, an iraq veteran set to expand the houses ranks of black republicans. a west point graduate who commanded apache helicopters in a rack, he was personally lobbing for months to run by party leadership including kevin mccarthy who convinced him his victory would keep the michigan cd ran in safely in republican hands for years to come. they note his victory will nudge up the number of black republicans in the house to at least three from two. john james this is sally, back in pennsylvania, a republican. i would like to make a comment. i don't care who is running for
11:30 am
vice president or president. i think the other party should be president. these people are smart people and they should listen. thank you, goodbye. host: to carolyn in tennessee. caller: good morning. host: go ahead. caller: hello. well, i am from tennessee. we are blood red. we are republican all the way. i am independent so i don't vote for parties or issues. in this election how i see things is that we are divided. we need to get together, republicans, democrats and work together.
11:31 am
nobody is going to work together. host: that was carolyn out of kingsport, tennessee. we are coming up on 8:00 a.m. eastern and we are spending all three hours on the washington journal getting your thoughts and asking what message did voters give on election day. it is (202) 748-8000 iyou're a democrat, (202) 748-8001 (202) 748-8001 if you're a republican, (202) 748-8002 if you're an independent. republicans are cly with 207 seats, democ with a00 84. 218 is needed for the majority and we will see what happens with those dozens of outstanding races.
11:32 am
the associated pressalng about 20 of them yesterday. we are using the associated press numbers. yesterday they called two senate racesots down to three yet bcalled. each party would need to win two to take the majority. the democrats would retain a majority if there were a 50 split. arizon nevadaeorgia are yet to be called in georgia wouldake a while longer, december 6 is the runoff. that race will go to a runoff because neithe candidate achieved at the 50% plus one vote needed needed to avoid a runoff. taking your phone calls asking what message did voters send on election day. this is the line for republicans. caller: hi, ok i was listening
11:33 am
to that woman from florida and i am a republican and i was a democrat before and when trump ran a change to republican and i am not sorry i did. i think everyone should have voted republicans and let them straighten up the world in this climate control if they stop shooting up rockets and spaceships and bombing our oceans and land we would not have a problem with climate control. we have too many people in the u.s.. i am almost 75 years old and it's hard to find a place to rent anymore. go back to the polls and get republicans in there. we need to get rid of biden,
11:34 am
pelosi, obama and the clintons. hillary was the real governor. i would ask everybody to vote republicans and get our borders closed and get our land back. host: this is catherine on long island, good morning, democrat. caller: good morning. i think even though even though it was not as great a way for republicans i think what happened with democrats realized they have to get out and vote. i think we voted for someone and to have rights. according to the cdc in 2020 in vermont and new hampshire, we
11:35 am
were zero. new york and connecticut shared a rate of 4.7. let's go down south, i love texas. they have a murder rate of 7.6. florida where ron desantis 1, 7 .8 murder rate. georgia 10.5 and finally the state i used to live in with my cajun boyfriend with the murder capital of america louisiana with a 19.9 rate in mississippi 20.5. third wave tells us that in 2020 the per capita murder rate was 40% higher in states won by donald trump rather than those one by joe biden. eight of the 10 states with the highest murder rates in 2020
11:36 am
voted for republican presidential nominees in every election this century. thank goodness nancy pelosi's husband live in san francisco. democrats have to vote always. we have to vote a straight democratic ticket in order to save us from the worst crime which is murder. you don't recover from murder. host: is the red state murder problem, is that the report you are referring to the third wave report you are referring to? this is carla in missouri, and independent.
11:37 am
caller: good morning john. i am 90 years old and i remember elections clear back to the second term of franklin roosevelt and i have to tell you . people say the american voters are uneducated and stupid and they make all these derogatory comments about them. i am so proud of everybody today. i think the callers have assessed this last election right on the button. the woman from florida many colors back who talked about ron desantis should not run this next time, i think she is right. i think he is young, compared to me he is young. he could take a turn later. i think he should fill out his term. the caller from pennsylvania that made some pretty derogatory
11:38 am
comments about their election there. my dad was a staunch republican back in the 40's and he had a comment that he made regularly when i was a little girl and i really picked up at on that. he said a democrat would vote for a yellow dog if there were a d in his name. i am not a republican or democrat. i voted for a democrat this time. the rest of it republicans. i just think that the republic is a lot more intelligent that some of these people think. host: you bring up 2024, who would you like to see rhonda 2024? caller: i certainly don't want donald trump to run.
11:39 am
host: who would you like to see to run? caller: i would love to see ron desantis but he is committed to be governor and i think he should stick to that. i think he would win but i think trump would try to screw up his nomination, i really do. host: do you think president biden should run again? caller: well know, heavens no. i think pence, he doesn't have a sparkling personality but he is a commonsense guy that i think he is nice and he has a good background and i think there are not too many scandals to think of which they always do. there are several senators that would make good presidents. it is a big field. i can't think of anybody off the top of my head.
11:40 am
i think pence is very levelheaded and he keeps cool. he doesn't get upset over things. we need somebody that doesn't have a fighting personality. we are all getting tired of it. we are tired of all the investigations. we are tired of all the backbiting. i wish we would calm down and run the country and get some of these problem solve. host: that's carla from missouri. president biden running for reelection, he has said that he intends to run and he was asked about it again yesterday at the press conference to talk about the midterm elections. here is the question. [video clip] >> our intention is to run it again. that has been our intention. regardless of what the outcome of this election was. the fact that we one, we, i
11:41 am
didn't run. the fact that the democratic party outperformed what anyone expected in did better than any off years since president kennedy gives everyone a sigh of relief that the mega republicans are not taking over the government again. my judgment of running when i announce, my intention is that i run again. i am a great respecter of fate and this is normally a family decision. i think everybody wants me to run but we will have discussions about it. i don't feel any hurry one way or another to make that judgment. today, tomorrow, whatever. no matter what my predecessor does. >> what is your thinking?
11:42 am
>> i hope i get a little time to sneak away for a week between christmas and thanksgiving. my guess is early next year we make that judgment. that was president biden about what message president voters sent on election day. we are waiting for plenty of results. dozens of house races yet to be called, to senate races yet to be called. still unclear which party will run the house and senate. democrat, what message do you think was sent from the elections? caller: that we keep our social security and medicare. they were talking about wiping it out in five years. to me, that was not put out enough. host: and what were your thoughts on president biden
11:43 am
talking about his intent to run for reelection? caller: i will vote for him because republicans to me, i started watching politics back when ronald reagan ran. he made made a bid for overseas, they destroyed the labor force here. the poor paying temporary services and nonprofit companies. host: this is john out of florence, massachusetts, a republican. good morning. caller: thank you for taking my call. they said they want to keep church out of state but raphael warnock, he's a preacher. they want to vote for smart people but they didn't vote for
11:44 am
a heart surgeon with 57 patents. they talk about the climate, what about all the generators for ukraine. now they have to use generators that run on gas, that's not so good. as for social security, they say they will ended in five years. the world is going to end of five years, they've been saying that since 1970. as for social security, democrats say that every four years. it never happened my whole life they have been talking about it. they fear monger -- host: what was your expectation on monday morning, what did you think it was going to be in term of republican gains?
11:45 am
caller: i thought they would vote to be safe and letting out all these criminals to commit crimes and locking up people with no bail and told everybody that crime was imaginary and told everybody that inflation was imaginary. they told them that real things were systemic racism and covid hiding out there. how silly can the democrats be? how dumb are they and they just get dumber and dumber. host: to bobby and st. paul, minnesota. caller: thank you for taking my call. i thought the election was going to be over, food, clothing, shelter and the economy.
11:46 am
i would just like to comment, i heard that lady from new york give all the statistics about homicides here and there. i grew up in westchester county, i am 76 years old. when i was in high school i loved to go to new york city, especially now during december when all of the holiday festivities were going on in rockefeller center and all the storefronts. now, new york city, it is no longer at the big apple is the big apple core. you talk about shootings and homicide, if you go to new york city, you have to have eight eyes, two in front, two in back, two on the right and two on the left. you can talk about homicides left and right but when you see all the lady joggers getting abduct good.
11:47 am
people of the subways getting pushed off the tracks. i can go on and on. my last point is this, hillary clinton i heard her speak on cnn about crime and how it is a right wing conspiracy, it is overinflated this and that. i don't agree with them all the time but the reverend alan the lady from new york, he said i get out there i get in the mix, i go to georgia, philadelphia and i preach all over and especially in the black community, people are afraid. crime is a big, big issue. when you look at chicago, you look at various areas. the homicide rate is this and that. when you have smash and grab it all these things and looting and
11:48 am
burning with the summer of 2000 and protesting and vandalism at night. i really think that that is an issue and apparently it wasn't voted on. host: that was bobby in minnesota. it is just after 8:15, getting your thoughts on the message that voters sent on election day. obviously, the midterms are still far from over because there are still so many races yet to be called. dozens of the house, three in the senate. governors races to be called. longtime reporter with updates on longtime races.
11:49 am
in the arizona governors races it is the democrat candidate is ahead of kari lake. in nevada adam walks all over catherine court. the incumbent senator with 81% in and the arizona senate race, mark kelly up by 95,000 votes, 70% in. that is the latest update. the numbers coming in from the associated press and we will continue to update you as the morning goes on. we want to hear from you asking you what message did voters send on election day. this is a democrat, good morning. caller: good morning. i hope this is something that you all, c-span will look into. i read several articles about
11:50 am
republicans calling in, not even calling in, sending question opposed to the media. i have noticed this prior to the election. the numbers were that this would be a big red wave and the republicans were doing so much better than the democrats as far as the numbers were concerned and come to find out our mainstream media was taking questionable poles from the republicans. polls that had not been verified, putting it out there and even nate silver with fivethirtyeight.com, he was involved too. he took these polls as well. basically what is happening is that just like the big lie, just
11:51 am
like these republicans lie to themselves about everything and make things the way they want them to be whether truth is involved or not. they put this big lie out there about the polls. on election day, this is just a matter of those lies coming back and kicking them in the face. the only thing is that they are upset now because it actually affected them. host: how much attention do you usually pay to polls and will you pay less attention in the future? caller: quite frankly, for the last couple of months i basically stopped watching the news because i did not want to see those poles. come to find out, they were lies. i wish you all would look into this. host: we had larry sabado and
11:52 am
this was one of the topics that came up, pulls in general, who pays for poles and what you should be looking for when you are looking out a pole. part of the conversation we had with him. it comes up every cycle, why people put out poles. they are paid for by somebody and somebody has an agenda. which of the polls that are more trustworthy and one of the po lls are put out by political parties. that was part of the conversation if you want to go back and look at that. caller: it is quite obvious that they made these mainstream media people believe, and if we can trust the mainstream media, who can we trust? host: that was loretta in north carolina. this is david, a republican.
11:53 am
good morning. caller: thank you for taking my call. i think mike pence and marco rubio would be great to run in 2024. they both have the same virtues, morals. i think they would be a wonderful team. i think it would get the republican party back into the race and what america wants. even the democrats and the republicans want a better democrat or republican party on both sides. host: do you think americo would want ron desantis? caller: i think he is a wonderful governor down in florida. i really like marco rubio and i like mike pence. i think that they would be the
11:54 am
best candidates for the presidency this time around. i want to congratulate the republican party. i think they are doing wonderful. i think they went a long ways this time. i don't think people should talk about waves or anything like that. this is not something you want to do real quick or anything like that. we want both sides to feel good about each other and we want the right thing to happen. get rid of abortion it is the worst, barbaric people thing you can do. i saved my daughter, i saved my daughter for being aborted. that's another story. i can tell you it is the worst thing that can happen in america is abortion. it has everything to be taken away from in god we trust. host: a few of your comments
11:55 am
from social media. this is denise from minnesota saying that the message from voters was we do recognize when democracy is in peril and what we needed to do to stop it and we did. it was refreshing to watch the losers conceived to the winners instead of denying the results from the election. split ticket voting seemed to be more prevalent. i would like to think that this was the boater sending the message that blind party allegiance may be losing its appeal. i hope so anyway. some surprising results, people are upset about crime and inflation but put back in office those who cause do it. was hoping people wanted to change it in the president even said he will make no changes. one more from georgia, people sent messages to the gop, their gerrymandering didn't affect
11:56 am
because people got out and voted in great numbers. look out republicans, we will return with the same enthusiasm as november 8. this is scary out of connecticut, and independent. caller: good morning john. i would like to comment on the prospect of joe biden running for reelection in 2024. i think the elephant in the room will not be his age per se but his vice presidential partner. i think kamala harris will be a disaster and cause them to lose the election. i would very much like to see a young fresh phase like chris murphy from connecticut who has student debt, has a mortgage on his home, is articulate and well
11:57 am
spoken. i think he will be a shining star and we should allow joe biden to win the election should he run in 2024. host: this is jonathan from taxes a democrat. caller: thank you for taking my call. the common i had about the election, i think it was a referendum. i am a democrat for a couple of reasons. number one is we do have folks that are on the far french love. most of the republican party, you saw what happened on january 6 with the insurrection on the capital. i am talking about the maga far right republican. there is a lack of morals and values. we talk about family values.
11:58 am
people talk about getting back to the good old days. when you have folks that are running for office. senator warnock and herschel walker. that is an absolute joke of a race. here's a guy who has all this baggage running for senate and pushing warnock to a runoff. if you looked at donald trump when he was selected. the country elected a mad men and they know he did. it is hard to swallow the fact, he had problems from the get go. i can even spend the time to name all the problems he had. he destroyed the moral fabric of the country. in terms of the things he was doing and saying. he talked about guns and safety in cities and crime.
11:59 am
let me give you another statistic. small city of oklahoma city has the murder rate of 7.8 per 100,000. when you look at the size of the city in terms of the amount of crime, it's extremely high. you are more likely to get murdered in oklahoma city than new york city based off the statistics. crime is higher in southern states because we don't have any gun laws. you can carry a gun without a permit. arkansas, oklahoma. southern states have crime rates higher than major cities like l.a. or new york. it's about scaring people and making them feel unsafe. and a lot of ways we are. host: that was jonathan out of
12:00 pm
texas referring to that third wave report, the red state murder problem is the title of that report. third wave.org centrist think tank, a centerleft think tank in washington dc. the top 10 murder rates in the united states according to their report exist in the states good x in keeping with our commitment to the
