take away? well we have to hold in our hands at the end of the year? >> i think a number of things. first of all, we are working on a report that is based on the evidence that we put forward in our hearing, as well as additional evidence. we will talk about things like the security failure, like the extent which work there was a -- and intelligence failure. as a committee, there is one thing we will not do. we will not blame the capitol police. we will not blame von forstmann for donald trump's mobbed arm that he sent to the capital. you will see additional information that report. i think what we've done as a committee has been to put forward the evidence about the plan that donald trump himself oversaw and directed.

each element of that plan, in order to stop that peaceful transition of power. there's so much information that it is really important for people to go back and watch the hearings, if you haven't. when the report comes out, read the report and really stop and think carefully. we need to make sure we do not become numb to what donald trump did. we need to make sure we remember that. we also will be proposing legislation we have already proposed and passed in the house. we will have additional recommendations, as well. and possibly a criminal referral. >> so you're still waiting to hear from donald trump? do think he will respond to the subpoena? what will happen if he doesn't? >> he has a legal obligation.

[applause] on thursday, senator chris coons took the liberty medal from washington dc to ukraine. along with senator rob portman, presented it to president zelenskyy during a meeting in kyiv. later in the ceremony, we will

war today. freedom, justice, and liberty. now, why is it so meaningful for all of us together here to honor president zelenskyy at the national constitution center in philadelphia, in this sacred space? let's inspire ourselves for the meaningful ceremony ahead. by gazing at the words of the first amendment which are shining behind us. now, look to your right at independence hall where the constitution and the declaration of independence were drafted. what are the principles of freedom that are shining now from the first amendment and independence hall? they are the principles that ukraine is defending and russia is assaulting. free speech and a free press.

like the united states, russia has a constitution and bill of rights which has many inspiring words. with the words of the russian constitution are empty words and its soaring promises are a lie. what does russia lack? what is ukraine fighting to preserve? a liberal constitution founded on separation of power. as the american founders recognized, the single greatest protection for individual rights is to ensure that the president cannot act as a tyrant, king, or emperor. the president cannot hold all the power. you need checks and balances of an independent legislator. most part of all, an independent judiciary, neutrally enforcing the rule of law. i was in ukraine in 2014, as they were drafting the new constitution in the wake of their revolution of dignity. i asked with the most important element of the new constitution

was. they said an independent judiciary to ensure a government of laws and not of one man. but a liberal constitution and independent judiciary cannot alone protect liberty against the press, posed by tyrants like caesar, alexander, and putin. the only defense against dictators and emperor raiders who try to consolidate their power at home with the murderous invasions abroad that the founders recognized, is the virtue encourage of the people and their leaders. the founders believed liberty to be the secret of happiness and courage to be the secret of liberty. they knew that they needed the courage to lay down your life of liberty. we are gathered today to celebrate that courage which we are seeing every day, in the cranial people.

men and women, soldiers and civilians who are laying down their lives for the defense of liberty and we are here to celebrate the courage of the ukrainian people democratically elected leader, president zelenskyy. by providing a heroic example of what courage looks like when it is deployed. president zelenskyy has inspired the world to support the ukrainian people and their noble crusade. they must prevail, and they will prevail. it is so meaningful to gather here to honor president linsky for showing the world how courage, self-sacrifice, and liberty can vanquish aggression. and from philadelphia to kyiv, let's send beams of light to our friends in ukraine to support their fight for life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. now let me introduce, jane ferguson, an award-winning correspondent for pbs newshour. she has reported extensively on war and humanitarian crisis in the middle east, and the africa, and most recently in the battlefield in ukraine. please join me in welcoming, jane ferguson. [applause] >> on the day russian soldiers poured across the border into ukraine, supreme court judge, was at work in his office in keefe. he restaurant his apartment where his wife and two small children were watching the news. they packed their bags, got into his car, and drove to the border. then i thousands of others, he kissed them goodbye and came straight back. in the coming weeks and months,

as russian troops and armor back by airplanes and missiles poured into ukraine, millions of everyday citizens across the country faced down their aggressors. in any war, it is the civilians who suffer the most. many would die in rates, others were tortured, separated from their families. thousands were forced on foot trim ring over broken bruises -- broken bridges and snow. elderly, many unable to see, shivered in basements as their apartment buildings were attacked by airstrikes and missiles. russian soldiers went door-to-door for the men, tying their hands and executing them in the streets. when city was reduced to rubble. those who survived forcibly moved to russian territory. ralph has been used -- rape has

been used as a war against an untold number of ukrainian women. the crimes committed by by the mayor -- putin's army are cruel. the people of ukraine would not bend. young men, who just days before had been paris says, college students, lawyers, were now headed to the front line facing the russian army and knowing they were massively outgunned. young women signed up in record numbers, driving ambulances while coming under fire and working as frontline medics. old ladies pick whatever they could from their houses and storehouses, jarred and canned fruits and vegetables and sent them to those living near the front. as the capital kyiv were prepared to defend itself, local set up checkpoints, sniper positions, using manhole covers as protection.

restaurants kept their kitchens opened day and night, making food in bulk and sending it to the volunteers and soldiers. when the supreme court judge arrived back in keefe, he looked up a young activist. 24-year-old roman agreed to let ivan grow -- join his own tears that were driving to the front almost daily. slipping into the woods and flying drones over russian positions to monitor their movements. ivan and roman were an unlikely pair before the war. but they formed a profound brotherhood. after the russians retreated from key, roman volunteers had to banks and was killed there in june. ivan survived the mission and continues to fight at the front.

from the very start of the invasion, ukraine mobilized from the ground up. their leadership, rose to the moment. from his sand bag office in kyiv when movement was essential for survival, president zelenskyy spoke to his people and the world. he galvanized his wary citizens while raveling -- riley -- rallying. he called out for weapons. he and his cabinet stayed, broadcasting together for the streets of the european capital under siege, refusing to leave his post as president when all hope seemed lost. this leader and the citizens of ukraine knew something that the rest of the world did not. that the russians could be beaten. not with overwhelming firepower

or waves of troops, but with character, heart, and face. they took what the world gave them, rummage through what they had and pushed back the remnants of a powerful army, showing the world that no empire can defeat millions of individual acts of people going about their daily lives and refusing to surrender. constitution, the author and columnist, george f well. he is unable to join us this weekend but he asked me to deliver his remarks. almost a century ago, and 1925, a british parliamentarian who had seen much history made in 51 years and to it himself go on to make some history gave a speech titled, mass defects in modern life. it was his meditation on whether leaders, a few singular people still mattered in the making of history. he wondered whether in modern conditions, vast and personal forces are everything and individuals are negligible. has the modern age, the probe with -- parliamentarian asked the personal factor in the shaping of history? is it still possible for there to be an individual who by the firmness of his character and by the mysterious harmonies and

inspiration of his nature, could roll the storm? the parliamentarian who asked these questions in 1925 became himself, and emphatic answer to the questions 15 years later, when in 1940, he, winston churchill, stepped forward to ruled the store unleashed by enemies with civilization. churchill's greatest legacy is a simple truth. it is that one person can matter immensely which is why today, it is common and correct to apply the man we honor today the adjective, churchill he and. awarding the metal to president zelenskyy is a way of saying thank you. thank you for reminding us of many things. as samuel johnson said, people

need to be reminded more often than they need to be instructed. the man we honor today is our error is great reminder -- our era's great reminder. he has reminded us how thin is the crest of civilization of the rule of law rather than a war -- a raw force. he has reminded us of how sturdy this is and how it can be defended by its dirty people, unwilling to feet and crumble. for several centuries, mankind has been belabored proving that history is a proper noun. an autonomous force working out its own logic. human beings are just passively swept along like corks bobbing and it turned that they cannot

substantially influence. these theories which disparage the ideas of human agency can be slain by fact. the individuals are those luminous few, such as churchill, charles de gaulle, nelson mandela, and martin luther king, who refused and chose -- refused to exist air -- forces. the greatest resistors are reserved for those personal choices, their individual decisions. the world would be very different and much worse. today, a new name is described in the honor roll. the name of this eras great, president zelenskyy, martin luther king changed the world because as a freak really said, the art of the moral universe is

long but it ends towards justice. he knew that the ark would not fund itself. it had to be bent i action. by human agencies inspired and directed by leaders. leaders such as king. such as a man we honor today. the 19th century american poet wrote once to every man a nation cometh the moment to decide in the strike of truth with pulses for the good or evil side. nowadays, as a result of a pervasive skepticism about moral principles, we often flinch from the robust language of confident , moral judgment. language that speaks rightly without embarrassments of good and evil. we have seen on the march in ukraine, and we have also seen

goodness holding aloft, fluttering blue and yellow flags. when the invasion began, someone tried to be kind and offered to fly president zelenskyy to safety. his reported reply will echo down the centuries for as long as people cherish freedom. his reply was, i need ammunition, not a right. when they disseminated the lie, he filmed a for response. the president is here. we are here today to salute him for making vivid, to essential virtues, bravery and patriotism. and also for being the reason, we in the west are recovering our capacity that in this cynical age, sometimes apices

thank you very much for the opportunity to be with you. jeff, back to her days in moscow i knew you were exactly the sort of fierce advocate for the principles of the constitution who might someday lead in incredible institution such as this. so thank you for everything that you and the board have done to help bring the constitution to life, to help be a vital center of civic education and help bring together the american people. in reaffirming the corp. rentable's that were the very founding of our nation. this is in many ways a sacred space. if our constitution is our civil capture, we should take some moment of inspiration by the reflection of the founding of our constitution here and the fight that continues for freedom around the world. as i mentioned in talking with

[applause] on our trip to ukraine, we first stopped in poland and had the

opportunity to witness how dozens of countries from around the world are coordinating the delivery of both two and and ella terry aid into ukraine. said the table with the leaders of the hundred and first division of united states airborne and to see leaders from all over europe from across nato coordinating plane after plane and bringing spratly -- desperately needed relief and supplies into ukraine. it was inspiring. we had an chance to visit with refugees families. they provided a safe of place and refuge in poland. before we began our train trip interrupted by my need to get the score for the phillies game. we had the opportunity to meet with our incredible and determine staff of the embassy

in kyiv, most a few -- most of who employees and have turned from other places to be part of american's to ukraine. we had the opportunity to visit a church where the world food program and a local ukrainian nonprofit are providing food to thousands of families. we also visited the headquarters of the ukrainian utility, recently struck by iranian provided drones in russian missiles. having failed on the battlefield, he is now trying to attract -- attack the infrastructure of ukraine and hundreds and millions of ukrainians who remain in a long, dark winter. we cannot let him succeed. we met with the prosecutor and talked about the urgency of documenting the war crimes being committed via trafficking?

against russian troops ukrainian civilians. we went from ukraine go to the international criminal court where we engaged in a conversation about how we might ensure accountability after ukraine is fully free. of course, the highlight of our trip was to visit president zelenskyy and the honor of presenting him on your behalf, with the liberty metal. navigating through many different traps and barbed wired , sandbags and armed men, into president zelenskyy's present is a reminder that out of all the people bottom repute in most wanted to kill, president zelenskyy and his family are at the very top of the list. no one is more worthy of this liberty metal and what it represents then president zelenskyy. he wanted me to convey to you that this award he received was

not just for him, but for all the ukrainian people who are mated to the fight for freedom and for democracy. when ukraine a victory, it will be in no small part to his personal result -- personal result. he saw a video he broadcasted after the russian invasion began , galvanizing his people by showing he would not flee in the face of danger. i will never forget hearing that when offered a military removal for his own safety by the united states, his response was, the fight is here, i need ammunition, not a ride. he represents the ukrainian spirit, the determination, strength and resolve in the face of aggression. we must stand in solidarity with the people of ukraine and support their fight. everyone who did -- believes in liberty must see that this is not just their fight, it is our fight.

today, ukraine is the front line of freedom globally. not all of us are called to be wartime leaders, not all of us are called to serve and sacrifice, but all of us were american must hear this call and senator portman and i are determined, in the coming months and coming congress, to do everything we possibly can to stand in solidarity with the people of ukraine and to support the fight and the struggle for freedom on its front line. thank you. today, we honor 2022 liberty metal recipient, zelenskyy. president zelenskyy's leadership in response to russians invasion of ukraine has earned him widespread acclaim and recognition and has united millions in support of ukraine. if you are here today as a guest , it means president zelenskyy has touched your heart. he together with the ukrainian nation have become a symbol of unity, strength, and a compromise for independence for the basic human right to be free and to choose your own future. the reason why the entire american nation, you personally support ukraine is because you agree with what ukraine stands for.

we share the same ideas and values. i see the similarities between the core values of our two nations. almost 250 years ago a new country was born here in philadelphia, a country of free and brave people who for years, especially for the last 257 days, have helped another nation to stand against an aggressive plier. the ukrainian people share the same desire for liberty and freedom and shared the same values of americans founding fathers. ukrainian stood up for their freedoms under the sniper bullets. under persecution and torture, and other ukrainian cities, they will continue to defend their

country in europe, suffering today under russian military attacks. there are some present here today in this room who have to flee from russian invasion when you are a small child in 1940. i remember your stories. you shared with me how your mother's carried you on their arms, how many of you were born in refugees and displaced -- disbursement camps. i remember that decades ago, independent ukraine was just a dream for you. for the last hundred years, ukrainians held ways of genocides and its success's of union. ukraine did not disappear. not when it was torn and divided by the russian empire. not when it was tortured and

starve to death by stalin. not when it's intellectual religious leaders were martyred by millions in siberia. not when the ukrainian culture was forbidden by hundreds of officials. despite everything, the ukrainian nation is alive and stronger than before. it is multi ethnic and is united by the descendant of the only jewish survivor. president zelenskyy's grandfather. it was a november when ukrainian solemnly commemorate millions of innocent people who were start to death. -- starved to death. it is up to you and all of us to stop the genocide by russia

against ukrainians. we cannot be like those who were silent during the holocaust. once the civilized world stated, never again. is it true for ukraine today? ukrainians are paying a heavy -- a price for their freedom. they are paying with their lives and it hurts to bury hundreds of innocent children who are being killed daily, tortured, and raped by this horrible war. this is not what any ukrainian parent and vision for their child. you can see their pain-and-suffering of ukrainian parents and ukrainian people. once, happy and joyful.

in response to the brutal russian aggression, ukrainians with their president adopted an american model. give me liberty or give me death. they will not ever give up on the freedom. [applause] every day, the rockets red glare, the bombs bursting in air do not stop ukrainians in their pursuit of freedom because it is also the land of the free and the home of the brave. [applause] it is our duty to help them and to support ukraine to be free,

independent and a strong country we can pass on to future generations. from the bottom of my heart, on behalf of every ukrainian child, every ukrainian mother and father, every ukrainian soldier, i would like to thank the american people. i would like to thank you. i would like to thank the american government for the enormous support you have's provided to ukraine. it is my sincere hope that we will continue to support ukraine and its president. president zelenskyy announced that he will designate 100,000 liberty metal price to the ukrainian veteran fund. the fund is a platform to develop opportunities for veterans and their families that is managed by the ministry of veteran affairs of ukraine.

when russia decided to destroy our freedom and wipe ukraine off the face of the earth, we got united and we cap unite -- all divisions are put aside. there is no place for conflicts because when there is a mortal stress to freedom, everything else is not important. millions of people are fighting and working to protect ukraine. they all decided we are here and we will never give up our freedom. i believe that this liberty metal is for all men and women of ukraine, who after that, showed to the world's that

defeat can win in ukraine. these are our soldiers. this is our volunteers who provider defenders with everything we need. these are farmers who stopped vehicles on the road to their communities. these are i.t. specialists who build defense against russian cyber attacks. these are companies that despite constant russian terror, were too ukrainian. these are doctors. these are school teachers and university professors who can read lectures from the trenches of the frontlines. but they do not give up and

teach children to believe in themselves and in freedom in ukraine. in less than nine months, more than 30,000 ukrainians have been honored awards for their contribution to our national defense. they are our herrera exposures -- these are our heroic soldiers. these are energy workers who got electricity people after uranian drones hit it. these are workers who supplier defense, economy, and communities. these are different people of various jobs who are all equally

fighting against the invasion. however, this liberty metal is award nunley only for our people, when this war began ukraine showed something port to the world, that democracy is here and we see now what we are capable of when we act in unity. every potential aggressor in the world sees the help that the united states and the free world is providing to us. and all of the people against russia see and believe it is better, not to start the war against freedom at all. this is one of the greatest contributions to the global peace and security during our lifetime. together with our partners, we are developing a new security
