[applause] pres. biden: we used to be number one in the world and infrastructure we sunk to number 13. the united states of america 13th. but now we are coming back because we came to pass the bipartisan infrastructure law. the largest law -- the largest

law since the new -- [applause] pres. biden: already we have funded over 20,000 projects including major air force. projects that will put thousands of people to work rebuilding highways and bridges and railroads, tunnels, airports, ports, tunnels, high-speed internet all across america. urban, rural, tribal. and we are just getting started. [applause] and i mean this sincerely. i want to thank my republican friends who voted. and my recoded -- my republican friends who voted against it as well. but i am still ask to fund the projects in those districtss well. do not worry i promised i would be a president for all americans .

biden. i've been watching him for years. i thought it was great. and as john kennedy said, we have nothing to fear but fear itself. biden's attitude i believe really brought that home to us host: ok to pennsylvania next. eric republican line. caller: he did a wonderful job as a president going out that republican leader mccarthy was a bottle out there and the rest of his colleagues were fake republicans they are so fake and phony i hate the way they always want to cut everything for the poor and not help us. tell the republican party they need to go to hell.
7:21 am
host: minnesota independent line let's hear from ryan. caller: hey how's it going? i did not watch it last night but i caught up on the news this morning with watching you guys. the reason i started re-watching this is because whether it is republican or democrat, they do not ask each other they just have a forum for going after each other whether it is trump going after democrats or now biden. the biggest thing i'm disappointed in with joe biden as an independent is you seem to be rational and levelheaded for most of his time in the senate. he would take positions on the right and left. he seemed more pragmatic. but i voted for obama and john kerry. but i'm disappointed with where the democratic party has gone.
7:22 am
and going so far to the left. i just wish we could have a president who was more separate. but i do not think in today's world of reactionary media trying to get views and clicks can happen -- that it can happen anymore. it is depressing. but that is what i had to say. host: our next caller from california. caller: i thought he did great. his speech was optimistic which is what the country needs at this time. we've been through a lot. my big take away was that he got republicans to agree to not cut social security and medicare. actually ran in my mother's bedroom and told her that. when it happened we were both so happy. i was surprise the big difference that you saw between
7:23 am
the democrats and republicans -- the republicans wouldn't even applaud infrastructure. i didn't understand where they were coming from last night. i thought joe biden did great and getting republicans to agree to not cut medicare and social security made my household very happy last night. host: we go to the next caller from arkansas. caller: good morning and good morning america. thank you for taking my call. i was thinking last night when i heard the president. he got 100 applause, and to me, it was just like when i was a child and i went through the sears catalog.
7:24 am
of course i am a baby boomer, but you know, it is like every page i would see something that i wanted. and, you know, i thought my parents had an unlimited supply of money and everything i checked on this year's catalog they would get for me. but we have to come to reality. we do not have the funds to keep on like this. i mean, america has to grow up. and i sure appreciate you letting me spew off like this. thank you for hearing me. host: of course. this is a caller from arkansas from democrat. arkansas online their governor sarah huckabee sanders gave a response last night the headline this morning in the arkansas democrat the arkansas governor sarah huckabee sanders rails

against biden and leans into cultural issues in the state of the union response. we will show you that in a bit. in addition to her comments, our colleague spent about an hour on the floor of the statuary hall last night as we do after each state of union hearing from members and new republican member kevin kiley from california had to say this about the president's call it -- comments and his concern about the crisis. >> tell us a little bit about your experience on the committee and what you heard from tonight's speech when it deals with justice and legal issues. >> the judiciary committee has a broad scope of issues it deals with but it is an important committee with dealing with the fentanyl crisis. i am glad the president use the platform of the state of union to bring attention to what is going on. it is ravaging communities across the country. then dear dear family who lost
7:26 am
their fun to fentanyl poisoning years ago and have been working tirelessly to raise awareness to other families who had to go through what they did. i'm glad that the president recognize that a huge part of the problem is what is going on with the border if he can follow-up his words with action and take action to secure the border that falls under the judiciary committee. it will bring accountability to those getting this poison and preying on young people. this is now the leading cause of death of young people in the country. they need to be held accountable and that is what we will be doing with our committee. host: all the speech and reactions are available on our website at c-span.org and also on the free mobile app c-span now. we will continue to take your calls and comments. we take kathy from florida. caller: high, -- hello, this is kathy from the stupid state.

7:30 am
the age thing is totally out of the question if a republican had done one third of what he has been able to do people would be cheering and screaming. i think the age thing is bothering a lot of people and they may as well just get off of that because that is not a problem at all. but i do not think the man, i do not think he can be around forever, that is for certain. but he did a wonderful job last night and like i say, i think he was spot on. host: as we pointed out earlier in the hour with the president's speech last night going 72 minutes this is his third address to the congress in his presidency. he had an unofficial address in the state of union and this is his second state of the union address. and this is the opinion from politico this morning why biden's speech worked. is the headline. the piece by jeff greenfield
7:31 am
says here's an opening line i did not expect to write an hour or so ago president joe biden gave a pretty good state of the union address. in did a -- indeed, one of the better ones i heard. what made it work is not just biden was in a buoyant spirit within energy that is often lacking, but it is clearly a political speech with a clear political goal that biden is a guy on your side going after the big boys flourishing at your expense. clearly the most dramatic portion of the speech was when he talked about the killing of tyre nichols at the hands of a memphis police at his parents looked on from the health balcony and his biden -- as he put it is mother saying something good will come from this. the highlight reels also included biden's moving words about a cancer moonshot and a feisty give-and-take one that biden speech clearly invited with republicans who did not follow kevin mccarthy's guidance to be polite. but other moment stood out to me. you can hear more from

7:33 am
caller: i have one major issue with any of this. my issue is basically i think is going to resonate with an awful lot of people. i live 30 miles from that border straight line distance probably 12. over the mountain and i am in mexico kind of thing. he did mention the border issue or whatever, but talking about it and securing it are two entirely different things. there's enough into an all being found in our area to kill everybody in this country. and he -- he just does not seem to give a rat about what it will take to stop this. we have cartels that run this place in mexico.
7:34 am
we have cartels that are pursuing trafficking. and instead of touting his own horn and stuff like that, when will he do something about this border issue? and that is my only comment. really. i thought he did a good job with the speech, but action will speak louder than words. host: how much do you think the president in his comments last night calling on congress to act do you want the president to act. what would you like to see them do to get done, what would you like for congress to get done as far as the border is concerned? caller: we need the border secured. right now it is wide open and it is not just in texas people are crossing the border it is in arizona, california, new mexico. i do not know what the solution is, but we cannot continue to go down this road. host: we appreciate your call
7:35 am
with the president last night speaking also and mentioned in the story read from politico earlier the killing of tyree with nichols -- tyre nichols with the hands allegedly by the police in memphis. this is the president recognizing his parents in the gallery last night. pres. biden: joining us tonight are the parents of tyre nichols. welcome. [applause] pres. biden: they had to bury tyree last week. as many of you personally know, there is no words to describe the heart ache or grief of losing a child. imagine if you lost a child at the hands of the law. imagine having to worry whether

good will come from this. imagine how much courage that takes. it is up to all of us we all want the same thing. neighborhood street violence, law enforcement earns the community's trust, just as every pin on the badge has a right to go home at night, so does everyone else out there. our children have a right to come home safely. [applause] pres. biden: equal protection under the laws of covenant that we have with each other in america. we know police officers put their lives on the line every single night and day. we know we asked them in many cases to become social workers, psychologists responding to drug overdoses, and all health crisis, and more. in one sense we ask too much of

them. i know most cops and their families are good decent, honorable people the vast majority. they risk -- [applause] pres. biden: and they risk their lives every time they put that shield on. but what happened to tyree in memphis happens too often, we have to do better. give law enforcement the real training they need. hold them to higher standards. help them succeed in keeping us safe. we also need more first responders and professionals to address the until health substance abuse challenges. [applause] pres. biden: more community intervention programs more investment in housing, education, and job training. all of this can help prevent violence in the first place.

anticompetitive. i am a premarket guy in the way make market competitive is you break up monopolies. and by the way they are treating our kids is a giant folk -- socialist pyramid -- social experiment. >> de have anything that he said that you agree on? >> i think the caps on prescription insulin prices is absolutely right. and i would like to hear about american chinese -- relations. and blocking chinese from buying american land. and there is may be some room to cooperate. host: that was republican senator josh coley last night hearing your reaction to the speech we go to the republican line to hear from kevin in loreto. caller: -- kevin in florida. caller: good morning for take -- thank you for taking my call.
7:51 am
it is a shame the country cannot do better than what it has. i would look for them to sit there and be on a lie detector. there would be a red light in front of joe biden looking like a fire truck coming down the road. he created the border crisis. i'm not a trump guy but it was the best we could get over hillary at the time. now that we are here it is a shame because both republicans and democrats are good people, but he is a pathetic liar and horse faced behind him was just amazing. they cannot get anything straight and they lie to the social security. it's not going to be taken from us retirees. as a retired 40 your executive, the worst thing i saw in management is when someone cannot admit when he is wrong. biden cannot admit when he is wrong and victim rats cannot
7:52 am
admit they put the wrong man in. i see why they went in the same way we did because they did not like trump but we have a real process -- problem with the president that cannot tell the truth. he is an example like many others that term limit should be in place. thank you for taking my call. host: our next caller from mississippi. democrat line. caller: good morning on wanted to say a couple things i want to talk fast. one of the things is about the border i am trying to understand is all the technology -- with all the fit and all that is coming across the border -- with all the drugs that are coming across the border, i am not sure about what happened to the drug task force undercover drug scenes and things they would do years ago where they would follow them and let them come through and set up these things and follow the drugs to see where that is actually going and
7:53 am
who is buying it. because no one in the irving community has a million dollars to pay for the drugs coming through. this is a billion-dollar business so somebody has this kind of money in the country to be buying the drugs when they come through. and another thing i wanted to say is that you have a lot of people that vote republican, that is fine, but you always want the democrats to fight for benefits, social security, medicare and all of your disabilities. you don't mind maxine waters getting in somebody's face when she is fighting for your benefits and medicare social security. i also want to say i got a check in the mail the other day and it was from the high end capital some kind of credit thing for $100 i said what is this for? as i cap reading i called the people and they said it was some kind of investigation that went on with the credit bureau. and listen to president biden
7:54 am
who did an excellent job by the way talking about how they are now going after the companies who are taking advantage of consumers. i realize i got a check in the mail the other day from an investigator. so he is doing an excellent job. the administration is doing an excellent job area vaccine waters stay with it and keep going. that is all i have to say. thank you. host: next is william on the independent line in wisconsin. caller: thanks. good morning. i am replying to the caller from florida who accused biden of lying. i think it is very ironic we had a previous president who applied not just for the last six years, but his life constantly we are still worried about biden lying that we have forgotten how much trump has lied to the american people. and continues to live. and i thought it is a lot of courage but -- courage for biden
7:55 am
last night to talk about the police situation. he was anti-police. he is pro-police. and he wants all of us to take responsibility for behavior. and thank you. god bless. host: we have a caller in leadville, maryland. where is love bill? caller: it is down here in st. mary's county it is a great place. host: great go ahead with your comment. caller: percival as a republican i would like to say i thought it was unprofessional with all the heckling and comments being shouted out there. all due respect to my guy we do not live in england. the second thing i got here is we were talking about the chips
7:56 am
ranked number one and we are now in number 13. but hey, he was there. i guess the other thing is the weapons ban he calls for assault weapons ban. they were just in there two years and he did not do it. we certainly do not have votes now to do it. a lot of hot air there i thought. i guess he gave good advice but if you get pulled over by police, turn your dome light on and keep your hands on the steering wheel and such. probably a good idea do not act a fool with somebody that pulls you over. that is just common sense. and fentanyl was the border situation the last thing i wanted to comment about. if it was me i would put military down there to do whatever i had to do to stop this because if we had soldiers over there in ukraine and they
7:57 am
were dying at the rate these people are dying of the overdoses, man, you would really hear it. thank you for taking my call. host: sure we hear from renee on the democrat line in massachusetts. caller: yes, good morning. i would just like to say i think joe biden did a great job last night. i think he has a great president 100% better than what we had in there previously and i think it is very disrespectful of the republicans to be heckling and acting like a bunch of fools up there. i watch them every day in the house they cannot pass a law and they are useless people they are disrespectful and kevin mccarthy was sitting there smirking have the time he did not get up to stand or clap. it is a disgrace with the republican party and it has become -- i have -- i never want to be a republican. thank you for taking my call. host: throughout the morning in
7:58 am
the program we are hearing from you most importantly. republicans (202) 748-8001 democrats (202) 748-8000 independents (202) 748-8002 checking in on reaction and social media and what the house is taking up. perhaps joe mccarthy not coincidentally taking up an oversight hearing on the hunter biden laptop story. tell us more about that. >> the focus in the house chamber last night was president biden and today it will be his son hunter biden. this is the associated press hearing -- headline about the hearing that is held in the house. x twitter executives face gop questioning on hunter biden. cnn with the story focusing on the three twitter executives. we will be divining those today. including the chief officer of
7:59 am
twitter. and that is the one journalist met after writing his review of the company's internal communications for the twitter files area he said it paid a key role in answering that near post story on hunter biden. back before the 2020 election. others who republicans have called to testify the former deputy general counsel of twitter and the global head of trust and safety of twitter area those are the republican witnesses and dim attic witness. we have a former twitter employee and whistleblower who played a heavy role in the strategy. she contends -- he testified during january 6 can -- select committee hearing that she was heavily critical of twitter's
8:00 am
strategy for handling trump's tweet. there will be an lot of focus they are today. that hearing takes place at 10:00 a.m. eastern and you can watch it on c-span two. and you can watch it at c-span.org and on the free c-span now video app at 10 a.m. eastern. and from billy helps of bloomberg today, the focus on upcoming republican efforts to highlight hunter biden, this from his tweets of yesterday. jim jordan who chairs the judiciary committee a different committee in the house and intelligence chair mike turner sent letters early this week on monday to 12 former that they are also digging into the hunter biden laptop story of the prepare for today's hearing. he goes on to tweet that the letters to former cia director brennan, former dni clapper and others seek transcribed interviews and other information substantiating their positions in an october 2020 group statement that publicly implied
8:01 am
that news reporting about hunter biden was a product of russian disinformation. today's hearing certainly doesn't look like it will be the last time that republicans focus on hunter biden. host: appreciate that. more to come and more comments from's we will show you some of the reaction from the official republican response from sarah huckabee sanders, a governor of arkansas. continuing with your calls, josephine on the independent line and your reaction to the president's speech. go ahead. caller: good morning. i really did enjoy his speech, i didn't expect to, but i did. it has substance, which i appreciate. i was disappointed in greene saying the president was a liar regarding the information on a's attorneys. all she had to do was -- it
8:02 am
wasn't the republican party, just the repose of -- proposal, and it wasn't a lie, she just doesn't know what she's doing. people have short memory. thank you. host: just a quick look here at some of the papers that are reporting that the speech last night, the washington post, their headline in their paper edition, biden mixes bipartisanship and defiance. palmetto, florida is up next. it is mike on the independent line. caller: good morning, thank you for taking my call. just to point i would like to make. i think it is a big facade. people are talking about trump lying. just get over that because biden
8:03 am
is our president, that is who we have to focus on. two lies don't make a right. the second thing is the 10 million is this application, small business applications. the situaion is 99% of statistics are meant for whatever that individual or group wants to mean. i know too many young people who are working two or three jobs. they have to get a side job to pay. i know a mother that has two children working diligently, but she's not making it. what she has to do is she has to get another job. i hope everyone understands that just because someone says something investigative, those are the two comments i would like to make and then like to wish everybody a great day and a
8:04 am
better tomorrow and thank you for taking my call. host: marilyn, democrat line. -- maryland. caller: thank you for taking my call. last night i thought president biden did a good job in terms of the preparation of his speech, the delivery. one of the things i find troublesome when people call in is just how they name call. whether it is democrats or republicans, we are all americans at the end of the day. i served my country in the navy for 10 years. we have to get better at being more -- coming together as americans because we have enemies out there who are plotting. the infighting that we've been doing between democrats, republicans, that is the stuff
8:05 am
we have to stop. that is what is concerning to me as a 55-year-old male who served his country. we have to become more united. host: what do you think the role is of both the president who have taught -- who has talked about maga republicans and republicans last night who from the floor of the house call the president a liar? what is the role of members of congress and the president, our government, in setting the example in terms of the name-calling your criticizing? caller: what you bring to the table is exactly true. calling maga republicans, the name-calling i think, if we could stop. both sides. i think that would help bring the country together. for example, if we are having a
8:06 am
conversation like me and you right now, and as soon as i saying name, callout your name or make fun of you, that conversation, nobody wants to listen. if we can eliminate the name-calling, even if we disagree with one another, we can listen and respect one another and show dignity, i think that will help a long way. we've got young people who are watching us. that is why young people are disrespectful to their parents and their teachers. they see how we act out in public. that is all i have to say, thank you for the question. host: appreciate your comments. the president paying homage to the longest-serving leader in the u.s. senate, mitch mcconnell, and also to the outgoing speaker, nancy pelosi, whose husband was in the gallery last night as well. president biden talking about that and also criticizing the
8:07 am
rise in political violence he sees in the country. president biden: folks, there is one reason why we've been able to do all of these things. our democracy itself. with democracy, everything is possible. without it, nothing is. the last few years our democracy has been threatened and attacked, put at risk, the test in this very room on january 6. and then just a few months ago, a big lie unleashed political violence to the speaker about the representatives. using the very same language the insurrectionists used as they stocked these holes and chanted on january 6. right in this chamber is a man who bears the scars of this brutal attack but is as tough and resilient as they get, my
8:08 am
friend paul pelosi. paul, stand up. [applause] there is no place for political violence in america. we have to protect the right to vote, not suppressed that fundamental right. honor the results of our elections. we have to restore trust in our institutions and democracy. we must give hate and extremism in any form no safe harbor. [applause] president biden: democracy must not be a partisan issue. it is an american issue. every generation of america has
8:09 am
faced, been called to protect our democracy, stand up and defend it. this is our moment. my fellow americans, we meet tonight at an inflection point. one of those moments in only a few generations for the direction we now take its going to decide the course of this nation for decades to come. host: washington journal this morning hearing from you, your reaction to that speech last night. going to georgia and the independent line with wendy. caller: i watched the speech last night. i've got to make two points. i tried calling last night, but i couldn't get in. the first point, when he was speaking about having to give the talk to his children, basically i'm guessing because they are white. my mom never had to give me the talk.
8:10 am
i was in the car with her and we were surrounded by six police officers with guns drawn. i was five years old. my mom had to keep her hands on the steering wheel and on the roof of the car. and the car was still in drive, so her foot was on the brake, i'm so glad my three-year-old brother in the backseat didn't wake up and jump around because i think we would have been shot. my mother was and is a white woman. i'm not, i am mixed. my father is black, my mother is white. i just wanted to make that point right there because he started talking about hate and extremism. it is not just black people who are having problems with the police. and yes, it does need to be performed. but i am tired of them only pointing out that it is only a
8:11 am
person of dark skin that has a problem with police. that is not the case. i just really needed to make that point. host: john in orlando, florida, go ahead. caller:caller: thanks for taking my call. one, your callers seem to think that the republicans have disrespected the president by calling him a liar. the fact of the matter is the man has lied more than the past president. i'm not going to mention any names, but you compare the two administrations, and there is no comparison. you look at the state of this country today and that is because of joe biden and his administration. that is the first point. the point about trump and his administration, everything was positive policies to this
8:12 am
country. all you have to do is look at the results. and my second point is that i watched c-span3 and donald trump's final address to the nation, and i watched nancy pelosi. she disrespected him in every manner she could. ripping up his speech at the end on tv, and you have people calling up and talking about how mitch mcconnell acted? i thought he had a lot of respect. i think he made his point clear when he disagreed with some of the anger that were being spoken and i thank you very much for taking my call. host: next up is mark in tampa, florida. democrat line, go ahead. caller: good morning. i thought the president and a good job with his speech last night. i thought he had an optimistic outlook for the country and that is something that you don't
8:13 am
really -- if anyone saw sarah huckabee, the governor's response from arkansas, she was so pessimistic and some negative. talking about how she didn't want to work with democrats. and biden was not like that at all. we need immigration reform. republicans have this talking point that the border is closed, biden is not doing anything. that is not the reality. biden has proposed extra money at the border for more border guards, more asylum judges. republicans have cut that down. and we know that we need more people at the border. we need the republicans to lend a hand.
8:14 am
the talking point, i guess right wing media is convincing these people that our borders are wide open or some and, i'm sure people can go on one of the channels on c-span and there is an immigration reform committee meeting where a democrat asked the chief of patrol if since biden got in office, did the border guards start doing anything different? did they open the border, was it open? there was two of them there and they both said no, nothing has changed, we are doing the same thing. and they are. and on the same note, another talking point of these immigrants ringing over all of this -- these criminals. i think that is to scare people against immigrants. but the data from border patrol itself is 85% of the people who come across the border come across through legal ports of entry, brought over by americans.
8:15 am
i'm sure there is just so much going through that it is tough to catch it all. i would like to see more funding for enforcement there possible. it takes two parties to come together and i think the republicans need to step up on that. host: that border hearing was held yesterday, a house committee yesterday held that hearing. that is available at c-span.org. some of the reaction, republicans turn themselves into props for biden and a picture of georgia representative marjorie taylor greene on the floor of the u.s. house during the speech last night who shouted out to the president particularly with his comments about social security and medicare. president biden: my admin attrition has cut the deficit by more than $1.7 trillion. the largest deficit reduction in american history. [applause] during the previous administration, the american deficit went up four years in a row. because those record deficits,
8:16 am
no president added more to the national debt in 94 years in my predecessor. nearly 25% of the entire national debt that took over 200 years to accumulate as added by just one administration alone last month . those artifacts, check it out. -- are the facts. check it out. how did congress respond to that debt? they did the right thing, they lifted the debt ceiling three times without preconditions or crisis. they paid american bills to prevent an economic disaster from occurring. so tonight i'm asking the congress to follow suit. some of my republican friends want to take the economy hostage, i get it. unless i agree to the economic plans. all of you at home should know
8:17 am
with those plans are. instead of making than pay their fair share, some republicans want medicare and social security to sunset. >> [booing] >> anybody who doubt that, contact my office and i will give you a copy of the proposal. i'm glad to see it. i enjoy conversion. if congress doesn't keep the programs the way they are, they would go away. i'm not saying it is the majority of you. i don't think it is even a significant -- but is being proposed by individuals. i'm not naming them, but it is being proposed by some individuals. folks, the idea is that we are
8:18 am
not going to be moved into being threatened to default on the debt if we don't respond. [applause] so folks, as you all apparently agree, social security and medicare is off the books now, right? unanimity. social security and medicare are a lifeline for millions of seniors. americans have to pay into them from the very first paycheck they start. so tonight let's all agree to stand up for seniors. host: i guess you could say one
8:19 am
of the notable outburst moments in the state of the union last night. >> plenty of reaction to that from reporters in the room, members of congress. reaction continuing today. let me take viewers through some of it. this is scott of nbc news. most of the heckling is coming from marjorie taylor greene. liar, china is spying on us. and others are getting them the action too. he writes during to the union address, "while joe wilson took a lot of heat for shouting "you lie!" at obama in 2009, there are at least 10 or so incidents of republicans heckling biden tonight. this from manu raju saying that congressman bob good told me that he was one of the hecklers recall that president biden is a liar and said he deserved it for his comments about republicans, saying that they want cuts to social security and medicare. he said biden deserved it.
8:20 am
this from matt fuller saying it is amazing how far politics has fallen. noting again joe wilson shouting at obama in 2009, that was during a joint address, not the state of the union address. but after that, the house passed a resolution of disapproval and it was a huge deal. tonight, a bunch of republicans were yelling at biden. mtg called him a liar. he says it won't even register. from a few members of congress with their reaction to that, chris murphy, the senator from connecticut, saying if it felt uncomfortable to watch on tv as a bunch of members of congress act like blind, drunk hecklers at a basement comedy show, it felt 10x creepier in the chamber. what a disgrace, what a terrible example for our kids. this from the democrat from maryland, ivory taylor green doesn't know the difference between the stated the union address and the rocky horror picture show. she just showed everyone how ridiculous maga is and why did
8:21 am
she keep yelling liar at george santos? that wasn't nice. and this from adam kinzinger, a former republican congressman saying my fellow republicans, you really want this as a role model for your kids? do you really think the next generation will want to be a part of this? i don't. and that picture of marjorie taylor greene. marjorie taylor greene giving her own reaction to the state of the union address in a twitter video that she most that she found back in her office after the address last night. this is what she had to say. >> the state of the union with joe biden and part of the time we couldn't really understand what he was saying because he was yelling at people, yelling through the applause and mumbling through his words. some of the things that we did here didn't make any sense. joe biden claimed to care about the border and talk about fentanyl debts which is the number one cause of young people
8:22 am
ages 18-45, but yet has no plan to secure the border. we all know he doesn't care about the border because joe wants border wide open. that is the whole problem with joe. we also want to talk about mcdonald's noncompetitive fees. ladies and gentlemen, i don't hear anybody at home moaning about these terrible fights between different fast food companies. joe biden did talk a lot communism, though, and i think that is something that should concern every single american and every single business owner. i will tell you one thing joe biden did lie about. he didn't know when he was talking about a lot of the time but he did, frankly live. talking about republicans and social security and medicare. we have not talked about cutting social security and medicare. joe biden has been claiming that we are going to cut social security and medicare, but we are not. so we called him out on the house floor. i called him a liar because that is what joe biden is. either he doesn't know what he
8:23 am
is talking about or he is just flat out lying. the one thing he did not talked about was the one thing he should have talked about. he should have apologized to america for the chinese spy balloon that he allowed it traverse across our country, spy on the military bases, spy on our cities, spy on our entire country. they know about it on january 28, still allowing it to enter our airspace, spy on our country, never did a damn thing about it until it left our country on february 4. joe biden is weak. joe biden can stand up to china. joe biden cannot protect our country, he can protect our borders, and joe biden doesn't know anything he is talking about. that is the state of our union. host: marjorie taylor greene, her reaction to the stigma union last night. we are getting plenty more from members, plenty more from the president and the follow-up to the state of the union, and hearing from you. (202) 748-8001 is the line to
8:24 am
call for republicans. (202) 748-8000 free democrats. independents and others, (202) 748-8002. back to calls. we will hear from henry in new york. caller: good morning, how are you today? host: fine, thanks. how are you? caller: i'm ok, thank you. this morning, hearing republicans call up, democrats call love, independents call love, it is lies, lies, different lies. can we realize that all the politicians we put up there, they all lie at one point? we only see what they want us to see. they all do it. in regards to some of the callers calling up in regards to the heckling from republicans, both sides have been doing it. i can recall the president trump speech when nancy pelosi ripped up his papers. there was lots of heckling coming from the democrats and
8:25 am
nancy pelosi had better control to quiet them down. the last thing i want to say his last night the president said -- which by the way, i did not think was a bad speech -- that for the next 10 years, we are going to need oil and gas. when that was brought up, a lot of heckling from his own party, the democrats. do they still want to cut out all fossil fuels? the president doesn't realize we still need this. we can go cold turkey. i'd like to hear what you have to say about that and some of the other callers. thanks for taking my call and please have yourselves a good day, everybody. host: dan roos, republican line. -- baton rouge. caller: thank you for taking my call, i think you do a great job. there's a few things i want to say. the speech was, to me, terrible because of the lies.
8:26 am
and the second thing, we all just have to know that we are not better off now than we were two years ago. we all can say that, democrat or republican. that's the truth. the third thing is, when nancy pelosi tore up that speech, that will go down in history. so she started that door to be opened to the republicans speaking out and heckling or whatever you want to call it. but that is on her. we are not better off and this president has to go. bottom line, sorry, that is the truth. host: doreen from baton rouge. the headline, louisiana's republicans see state of the union differently. they are right louisiana republican congressional delegation voiced views contrary
8:27 am
to the economic success president joe biden touted in wide-ranging state of the union address that touched on many issues. "jobs are coming back, pride is coming back because of the choices we made in the last two years," biden said tuesday night. perhaps unsurprisingly, house majority leader steve scalise and louisiana's five republican representative and the two gop senators see it differently. "the state of the union is struggling under the weight of president biden's extremist agenda that is causing pain to hard-working families, scully said in the moments following the tuesday night speech." in the comment here from the one democratic representative from new orleans. for new orleans and baton rouge, troy carter, the louisiana congressional delegations only democrat, the highlight with the president confronting police brutality in a primetime annual speech watched by tens of millions of people. members of the congressional
8:28 am
black caucus invited family members of people killed while in police custody. up next is terry on the democrats line. go ahead. caller: yes, i thought the speech last night was dismal. it had all the impact of a butterfly landing on a weed. all of the gullibles are going to swallow it -- there was more lies last night than a golfer trying to play 36 holes in a rainstorm. host: we are going to move on to hear from lee on the independent line in rockville, maryland. caller: good morning. enjoying the show this morning. i have a comment on the sarah huckabee sanders response.
8:29 am
governor sanders has been in office for a whole two or three weeks. prior to becoming governor of arkansas, she was the press secretary for former president trump. and when she was press secretary to donald trump, she distinguished herself for telling really, really, really big lies, dishonesty as press secretary. the biggest of them all had to do what -- with james comey and the fbi. president trump got rid of james comey as the head of the fbi, which is his right. huckabee sanders told everyone
8:30 am
that she had received numerous emails, numerous text messages from fbi agents who supported james comey, when in fact she had done zero text messages with zero emails and zero phone calls about --. she is a real, accomplished liar. it is really very, very sad that republicans asked her of all people to respond to the state of the union. the state of the union speech was fine. republican response was a disgrace. to have a professional liar like huckabee sanders as the spokesperson for the republican party. host: this is a headline from the washington post this morning on that response.
8:31 am
arkansas governor sanders goes at "woke left" in gop response. she also talked about education policy she is introducing in arkansas. the official republican response to this end the union. >> down the street from where i sit is my alma mater. as a student there, i will never forget watching my dad, governor mike huckabee, and president bill clinton hold the doors open . doors that 40 years earlier had been closed to them because they were black. today, those children once barred from the schoolhouse are now heroes memorialized in bronze at our state house. i am proud of the progress our country is made. and i believe giving every child access to a quality education
8:32 am
regardless of race or income is the civil rights issue of our day. tomorrow, i will unveil an education package that will be the most far-reaching, bold conservative education reform in the country. my plan empowers parents with real choices, improves literacy and career readiness, and helps but a good teacher in every classroom i increasing their starting salary from one of the lowest to one of the highest in the nation. here in arkansas, and across america, republicans are working to end the policy of trapping kids in failing schools and sentencing them to a lifetime of poverty. we will educate not indoctrinate our kids, and put students on a path to success. it is time for a new generation to lead. this is our moment.
8:33 am
4 part of the speech last night from sarah huckabee sanders. all of her speech is available at our website. we had it well on our mobile app. we continue in the morning after the state of the union. the line for republicans, (202) 748-8001. (202) 748-8000 free democrats. independent and others, (202) 748-8002. your reaction, what did you hear, what did you like or dislike? some comments on social media here. republicans have been trying to get rid of medicare and social security ever since democrats brought it to this country. the democratic caller fails to understand what sunset legislation does. worthless crap doesn't survive the sunset. legitimate programs do. lucieann says president biden
8:34 am
was looking forward not backward. he laid out the things that were accomplished and looking forward to more things that will be a cumbersome the future that will make the country stronger. generally it was a great speech, but not goper reaction! and from william, sarah huckabee sanders gave a well-written middle school speech filled with adolescent grievances and no plan or vision for america other than a rearview mirror. biden offers a long list of bipartisan accomplishments, specific goals and simply asks gop to show. back to calls. republican caller, it is shirley in illinois. caller: thanks for taking my call. i thought sarah's speech was very hopeful and i thought it was very great. i don't understand when everybody thinks that fighting is going to reunite us, it links
8:35 am

two very contrasting views of that funds last night. -- republican response last night. host: politico.com, biden urges were public and takes a few swipes at them, too. the seer from mary lou calling from new jersey, independent line as we get your reaction to the state of the union. caller: good morning, bill, thank you for c-span. i want to comment on both speeches. first, i thought sarah huckabee sanders came across a genuine, sincere and concerned, and i felt that story that she called about going to iraq with president trump was very moving because it showed a side of president trump that all too often, people are not willing to recognize. kalus go to joe biden. joe biden at no point addressed the exorbitant food crisis, the
8:40 am
rise in gas prices, the energy crisis. he didn't remark on that balloon that flew over our country and his fight on us, giving information to china. and regarding immigration, it sounded like his idea of correcting the situation is to give amnesty to the dreamers. he talked about reform, but the problem is all along, we have not needed reform. all we simply need is enforcement. we have never had. and this is for both parties seer. i was very disappointed in joe biden because i've heard many state of the union messages as a 74-year-old woman, and when i look at him standing up at the podium, and i think of some of the presidents that we had that have done so much for this country, and i see how he is
8:41 am
tearing down this country, it is very tragic and sad. thank you for taking my call. host: up next is susan in florida, republican caller. >> thank you for taking my call. i just wanted to say i did watch it. yes, i am a republican and i am tired of the lies. i don't understand why they have to stand up there and just live. kate you tell people the truth? it just doesn't make sense to me. inflation is terrible. you wouldn't know anything about inflation because this biden go to the grocery store? don't think so. this he buy gas for his car? i doubt it. he knows nothing about inflation at all. i always tell everybody, is not the kindergarten class in washington right now, it is the pre-k.
8:42 am
that is how smart they are. he keeps telling people we are going to get rid of social security and medicare. host: we will move on. we've been talking a bit about the arkansas governor's speech, some of the comments from sarah huckabee sanders. let's hear from marcus up next, calling from arkansas. marcus on the democrats line, go ahead. caller: good morning. host: go ahead. caller: i'm appalled by what she had to say in response to what the president had to say. i'm listening to all of these other callers, in particular, the republicans, calling in and complaining about how biden can't change this and lying about that. they need to quit watching fox news and need to get involved in
8:43 am
what is really going on in their communities and they will discover that most of these states that are run by republicans are taking money away from the public schools and getting into religious organizations because those religious people are going to vote for them. that is not have this country was intended to be run. i can remember jfk giving inspirational speeches. i can remember when he was killed in this whole country came together, and i am so saddened by the state of affairs that exists today. it is not only depressing in the sense that people are so divided, it is that people all have this opinion that is based on lies. all of the news media -- and i can't say all, but a lot the news media is not telling the truth.
8:44 am
but they are telling us what they want people to hear, to keep people divided so they can selling their product. it has nothing to do with reality. and we've got to get back to dealing with reality. that's my opinion. we have a governor that is not quite much less a governor of the state. host: getting your reaction throughout the morning on the state of the union. as he did last night, we also heard from members of congress after the speech last night. one of those with democrat joyce beatty of ohio we talked about the president's remarks on police reform. >> the president's comments about police reform and those topics, how do you think that felt tonight as far as republican reaction? >> i think that we have to continue to do the work to get my colleagues on the other decided to stand with us. but it is very hard when you are looking at tyre nichols mother in the audience, when you are
8:45 am
thinking about the gut wrenching takes that we just watched. the congressional black caucus has been very active in meeting with the president, meeting with democrats and republicans to make sure that we can craft the george floyd justice in policing act or some form of it. and i thought the president was very clear tonight that he is going to be fully engaged with getting policing deals, and also dealing with assault weapons. >> as far the congressional black caucus, what is your role these days, and what was that meeting like? >> i am the congressional black caucus chair emeritus. the meeting was well-received. the president is very engaging, made a commitment. you heard it again tonight. because of that meeting with the new chair, we were very clear with the president and he was very receptive that he wants to make sure that we get policing laws.

host: some reaction on social media, a couple of tweets and from text messages. this one said biden didn't even discuss the endgame in ukraine. democrat voters and callers are not serious adults. lisa says i thought sarah sanders speech was good but way too long and livered in a deadpan tone. she should have wrapped it up after what she said democrats want to do is double down on crazy and it would have been a much better speech. when trump mentioned his tax cuts i'm sure democrats did not applaud even though they received a tax cut. aunt janet says mdg was an embarrassing spectacle during the state of the union. her heckling of president biden revealed her crude and uncivilized character. our disrespect for the office of the president, the u.s. congress reinforces her obvious intent to overthrow the u.s. government. onto cause. clearwater, florida, good morning. caller: good morning. the radical left is so

8:49 am
i could buy it, i could redirect it anywhere. anyway of distorting that is lying. the second thing, a lot of people are upset about biden saying that republicans want to stop medicare and medicaid. i mean, it is kind of the issue that most politicians are not just outright lying all the time, they are just telling half-truths. he knows that one republican who submitted he also know that most republicans have completely denounced it after it came out. democrats are using it as a talking point. they tell part of the truth and unless republicans come out and actually explain that, they know if they are direct in their answers, they can tell lies and get away with it.

host: delaware is up next. sharon is on the republican line. caller: let's be honest. if your democrat, you love the speech. if you're republican, you hated the speech. if you're independent, i guess maybe in the middle. the whole flipping back and forth, i couldn't bear it. i live in the real world and when i ran into an elderly gentleman at the grocery store and he was in tears because he lost over $100,000 in his 401(k), that is something to think about. you know who should have been sitting in the audience are those goldstar families that he created. and he has yet to speak of them. not even at the first state of the union. this country, if you think everything is going great, stick with the democrats. if you think that we need major changes, you might want to start shopping around because we are
8:51 am
in trouble as a country. and i think if we unravel all the financial ties that biden has been china, that is going to explain why he allowed that balloon to fly over our country. and he does not care about the kids in these inner cities, either. none of the democrats do, not one of them. they are dying left and right every single day. thank you and have a good day. host: barbara up next, democrat in raleigh, north carolina. what is your reaction? >> i wanted to say that i was very pleased with president biden's age last night. and also i wanted to say that people need to get engaged with what is going on and understand that this country is a republic for the democratic system but it will not engage on what the real

issues are, and how they got to be what they are. we don't know anything about how to run our government. host: barbara, how do you stay engaged in the issues? >> i stay engaged by paying attention to what is going on. for instance, the president can't close the border without congress acting. if you know what our system is, you know that we have different parts of our system that balance each other. the congress to legislate and they pay for stuff. you have congress not acting on situations. the president cannot do it. it is not within his constitutional authority.
8:53 am

that big mouth loudmouth, has no desire to work with biden, and it is so apparent. it is all about might makes right. they want to beat biden down and take over again, just like trump. is going to cause this country to fail. i watch them squirm when biden brought up about the taxation part. making the rich pay their fair share. all of these corporations that have been hiding billions of dollars that could have gone into making our economy strong. what's going to happen when we finally do get attacked, and we will be attacked by russia and china. and north korea. there's no rhyme or reason anymore.

on the republican line, hello. caller: thank you for taking my call. i want to say that i have been registered as a republican all of my life. i voted for democrats and republicans. i tried to be very optimistic and open-minded about president biden's speech last night. unfortunately, i was completely disappointed. the reason i was disappointed about it was that it seemed like he just tried to use things like social security, and threw that out at the democrats. he was waiting for a reaction. he also didn't lay down any real plans. it was all very general. to me, that speech miss -- was
9:15 am
saying he was running for president again in two years. of course, he is also talking about what he's done with the democratic party because he is changing all of the dates on all of the primaries, so he is going to going first. i think this is the most clever politician we've ever had. he's been involved in politics since 1972, so it really shows. i was hoping he would change and be more ensure -- mature, but he did not impress me. host: thank you for the call. we have more time free to get in and give us your thoughts and comments. whether by phone or through text messages, we will get to those. let's check in with c-span. guest: a lot of response from

[indiscernible] all i see is that the republicans are trying to take freedom away from us. enough is enough. not only am i sick entire about this mpg antic, enough is enough. i am mad at the people who voted her in and continuously vote them in. they ought to be ashamed of themselves. mitch mcconnell, he ought to be ashamed of himself. mccarthy should be ashamed of himself they should not be called americans print if they don't want to live right and have freedoms, they need to go somewhere else. enough is enough. there people have died and have been enslaved. people have done horrible things for this country to have freedom. after all these years, they want to take them away from us. enough is enough. that's all i have to say. host: louisiana come up next.

hello. caller: how are you doing? i am disabled. i'm a veteran. what i saw last night was appalling. let me ask you something. why do you keep promoting donald trump? the republican party always talking about veterans and all. all that kind of credit. we have eight craft -- crack epidemic. it is appalling when we all know that they love the hell out of him. we have an epidemic, and they shut that down. now they are turning to fentanyl. they won't blame the fentanyl on the border. they make the and the united

states. [indiscernible] pain and stuff. it is a pain to watch mccarthy sit up there behind the president with a stiff upper lip, looking like he doesn't know is going on, but we all know what's going on. there is an in the house. they are making their point loud and clear. if people don't get up and start to boo, they caught you. united states won't be united. another thing. they're always talking about inflation. don't they know, with china, it is under lockdown for two years, three almost, and the worry about inflation and gas prices, and russia has a big war started. they're acting like they fought a war. >> robber in louisiana. >> linda in arizona.
9:38 am
go ahead. linda in arizona, republican. we're trying to get you on the air. you're on the air now. we are having some issue with her line. we'll go to woodstock, illinois. -- excuse me, woodstock, new york. will, on the republican line. -- independent line. caller: good morning. i am very concerned. host: we lost you there. were having a little issue with the call. we'll go to tony in antioch, illinois. democrat. host:. caller: hello. the speech by president biden was ok. i have a few viewpoints since i me to -- student of china.
9:39 am
china was setting up in south america. marco polo went there and he brought the chinese back to create spaghetti. the chinese built the great wall to keep the barbarian out. that is us. they've been considering themselves highly advanced due to the fact that they have acupuncture, confucianism, marshall law, soak writing, they think they're the creators of civilization. mao zedong said out of the radioactive dust, the young man will rise. host: that's the view of tony. here is the opinion of the president speech. a lead editorial. a headline which says the state of the union could be a lot worse. in the otori look, the writer say, mr. biden's declaration to ukraine is that as you america
9:40 am
is united, it also that the gop will share the commitment. the president's call to crackdown will find some revealed to the gop side with the speech limited ambition never highlighting the reality that mr. biden promised to unify the country and has yet to pan out.
9:41 am
-- let's ban assault weapons now. a picture of the president standing at the front of the house chamber. but i did want to note this tweet. it is from, as you say, the way back machine. c-span found this from 40 years ago. it talked about the address and the response to the state of the and, four years ago. joe biden was one of several democrats who gave a response to president reagan's state of the union address in 1983. c-span dug it out and we want to play it first. >> criticize the republicans, and we will. we think, frankly, it is time to
9:42 am
put up or shut up. we have a number of proposals from the democratic party. some are basic it tried and true. some of them are new ideas. all of them fall in a very positive and hopeful democratically. a vision of america that says we can rebuild to a stronger economy. we can create a better and more secure job. we can put this country back to work. two other themes run through our democratic ideas you will hear tonight. opportunity and fairness. the cornerstone rights of the american people. as franklin roosevelt said during the recovery from the great depression, just four words are important. these four words -- it can be done. v.p. harris: a great find there. thank you for plane the. president biden, state of the unit addressed with the second state of the and so far term.
9:43 am
we have our line open for republicans. that is for democrats. independence for others. the u.s. house is coming in at 10 a.m.. live coverage of course on c-span. let's go to cori on the republican line in california. caller: hello. i wanted -- i missed the speech, last night. i have a comment. i was trying to find it, so i looked on c-span and thought maybe they would show it again. i flipping around. i cannot believe the callers that are calling end. i don't have to see the speech because it's all a bunch of you know what i mean. all they do is the democrats talk about the republicans, the republicans talk about the democrats, and nobody gets anything done. thrall complaining about she's
9:44 am
yelled and this thing peered what about one pelosi ripped up the speech? no and set about that. it is just a joke, they need to get it together. start working on the real problems of the world. host: it sounds like you do need to see the speech then, see can see what it was that our plus of the speech, make up your mind. caller: i am saying i want to see it. i don't have to see it because nothing gets done. that is the joke about it. everyone is so divided. even my family is divided. just like another caller said, what happened to the days when nobody said who they voted for. it was taboo. now, you say you are a republican or a democrat or whatever, they say they are not
9:45 am
going to talk to you. it doesn't matter. host: in terms of the speech itself, it is available right now on our website at c-span.org it is also available on our mobile app, c-span now. it has aired several times overnight on the c-span network robbie --. it probably will. on the weekend. it will re-air at some form. as always their online at c-span.org. we also have reaction you can find their last night. at statuary hall, they were speaking to members on the floor of statuary hall. we heard in virginia who talked about the president's comments on the health care system. >> if you are a veteran, or a nurse practitioner, we spoke a lot about health care issues, and what was your reaction from the experience of the medical field? >> my patient population relies on medicare, so was glad that you acknowledge that republicans really want to look out for
9:46 am
those things. we are not here to cut either of those items, but there is a lot of room for health care improvement, especially nursing home reform. transparency in health care costs. things that i would say to support a health-care provider. i can't wait to be an advocate for that population. >> what about moving past that cap on insulin for those outside of medicare? works for those who are diabetic, that is an issue. i have a lot of patients who struggle with essential medication that they need on a daily basis. we have to work together to find solutions that are conservative, but we have to agree they will lower the price for other pharmaceuticals. >> you deal with older americans. there are a lot of reactions on the topic of social security and medicare. what is your impression? >> i was glad that republicans stood up and said no, what are you talking about. you have to heroes, and in the background, there was a push back when they said republicans want to cut social security and medicare. we don't want to do that.
9:47 am
we made that clear. >> just a couple of tweets here. this tweet said that they were watching replays on the scene of the unit on c-span early this morning. the well-being of the nation and its residents took center stage and never left. i thought the response was not too predictable. those calling to parade republican outbursts -- where was there any democratic outrage from the resistance show. pelosi's tearing up of the speech buying trump as he was speaking. this, it looks like it is something if you get used to. you are not just convincing anymore. especially when you sucked up to trump. who do you want us to forget about? back to calls. rachel is in texas. independent line. caller: we were talking about nancy pelosi. she tore up the speech of donald trump in our member when joe wilson stood up and called obama
9:48 am
during -- a liar during his speech. a lot of republicans raise money for joe wilson because he was their hero. the one who called biden a liar? she sucked up qanon and alex jones and went to sandy hook and called the parents of the children that died liars. call them actors. she got elected on conspiracy theories, and mike lee, he said he wasn't going to cut social security. if people google it, there is a video of him talking about taking social security and pulling it from the roots and doing away with it. all they have to do is do their google whatever. their videos that talk about social security. for all of these people that are mad about pelosi, why are they
9:49 am
mad about wilson? he started the whole disrespect of presidents giving speeches. host: debbie on the democrats line. we lost debbie. we will go to ted in michigan. republican. coed. caller: go ahead. thank you. that guy from i don't know where, a union worker, he forgets what the democrats did with trump. they sat on their hands and booed him. they start him. if people want to go back, they should took it -- look at joe biden when he was senator. he went to cut medicaid and medicare. let's go back and look at that. it's sad. it's so sad that our government has divided all of us. we have to come together. we are the dumb ones because we
9:50 am
put these people in there. we are the dumb ones. we voted them in. this is what we get. a bunch of kids in a sandbox fighting over detroit and stuff. we have to stop this craft. host: the president reiterated his call for the ban on assault weapons, commenting on the actions of brandon in the recent shootings in monterey park california. >> to something. that was the plea of parents who lost their children. i met with every one of them. do something about gun violence. thank god. thank god we did. the most sweeping gone legislation in decades. that includes things like the majority of responsible gun owners already support enhanced background checks.

red flag laws. keeping guns out of the hands of people who are danger to themselves or others. our work is not done. join us tonight as brandon, 26 euros euro, he put his college dreams on hold to be at his mom's side. brandon helped his grandparents coming two years ago, during the lunar new year celebration, you heard a studio door close. you saw man standing there pointing. semiautomatic pistol. he thought he was going to die. but he thought about the people inside, and in that instant, he found the courage to ask -- act

and wrestled the pistol away from the gunman who had already: people and another dance studio. 11. he saved lives. it's time we do the same. van assault weapons. it is law. -- assault weapons. it is the law. in 10 years, the number of mass shootings went down after we let it expire, and the republican administration saw the shootings triple. let's finish the job and ban assault weapons. host: less than 10 minutes left on washington journal. houses coming in at 10:00. live coverage on c-span, and we want to let you know, over on c-span two, at 10:00, we will be

bringing you the house oversight committee, the house oversight and accountability committee. they have a hearing with executives on the twitter handling of the hunter biden laptop story. the new york post story on hunter biden and other related issues, live at 10:00 on c-span. it will stream live at c-span.org. and it will be live on the c-span now mobile app. lisa is up next in owings mills, maryland. caller: i want to say i watched the address last night. it was a speech. it was the speech that was supposed to be positive and ignite people. it also pulled people together. unfortunate, what i've heard from your callers today, and from us mike, people have really short memories. with past presidents, fact-checks happen everyday because they never told the troop. -- truth. we have hecklers and callers
9:54 am
calling and saying that he is a liar, we need to really think of what we just went through with a past president. maybe, just maybe, he will be more fair and understanding, and a little bit patriotic to try to bring this country back together. thank you for your time. host: elizabeth, san diego california. caller: good morning. i think joe biden -- it was a very good speech. he was trying to unite the country as you can see. he reached out and mention things he worked on with republicans. it was a great effort. i think they succeeded. the people calling in, they don't think biden has done anything. they were not listening. he was listing things is already accomplished. the things. with regard to climate change,
9:55 am
bringing to production to the united states. i did want to mention callers calling about the voter and the drug trade. the drug problem is american drug -- guns. drug cartels can't wait to get their hands on ar-15's. if you travel to mexico, they will confiscated. american guns are part of the funeral coming back with fentanyl. i want to comment on donald trump. the man told 30,000 documented lies when he was president. he accused biden of being corrupt. trump was lining his own pockets. he would not release statistics.
9:56 am
biden has released 25 years of tax returns. anyway. on npr, years ago, the there was a piece on chronic liars. it talked about how people had told lies. that his father was a pilot for the candy family, those alive. one woman said her boyfriend disappeared for weekend and came back with an l.l. bean credit card bill that claimed he was babysitting a mafia princess. it was very humorous, but in the end, one woman said the biggest lie of all was the lie we told ourselves. that is what i see in the republican party. a lie they tell themselves about donald trump and the divisiveness in this country. it is caused by the gop. democrats are trying to bring
9:57 am
people together and get things accomplished without calling them names. i think joe biden is a good example of that. thank you. host: onto a republican line, bessemer city, north carolina. mike. caller: yes. it was a joke. he didn't talk about the main things that are affecting this country like the southern border. 5 million illegals crossed the border just under his watch for two years. imagine what it will be in four years. it is talking about assault weapons and gun violence, but it does talk about the crime with thugs and ammo that were doing the smash and grabs in broad daylight killings of people. assaults on people. they won't talk about republicans. the democrats are driving with blinders on.
9:58 am
there is no crisis of the border. there is no crisis. these are all humanity crisis. these are people, they don't want to talk about the god away and it will bite this country in the rear end because these people, they don't want to get caught. we will have another 9/11, and it will be more drastic than what is going on now. i know a lot of c-span listeners , i am 57, so i'm getting there, but the democrats use the two main lines that republicans will cut social security and medicare , and racism. always with newscasts and shootings in california. such things before anything comes up. it was a racially motivated attack. asians are killing asians and those things.
9:59 am
one thing that bothers me the most is that they said during january 6, there were five cops killed. that was absolutely a lie. >> want to make sure everyone gets to weigh in on last night state of the and. north carolina, james on the independent line. caller: thank you for taking my call. i agree somewhat. i don't agree that bidens policy as far as the border. but overall, i think he's done a good job. let's talk inflation. the main cause is corporate greed. if people see a reason to check prices up, we heard from people the most that are middle income people. now, we surly when it protected. we pay into it, and we use money for other things, but i don't
10:00 am
agree with either the left or the far right and i wish we would come more in the middle. i'm a moderate, and i see both parties failing me for that because we cannot legislate a government from the far left or the far right. we need to come in and be in the middle, and help our country to do that. there depending on a comment to me, my biggest concern is we are going to lose america. we are going to cause our own destruction from within, not just from other countries invading us, because we are so divided, but we all have to come together and figure out we have issues, but we need to get together. >> will you have the last word on that. we are wrapping up the program. thank you for the many skulls. -- calls. we are leaving here, the coverage of the house is coming up next live coverage here on c-span. we will see you tomorrow morning at 7:00. order. the chair lays before the house a communication from the
