invasion highlights security. here is a statement from the north american aerospace defense command, there. on what happesterday. yesterday at 242 p.m. eastern time, at the direction of the president and based on the recommendation of secretary d austin and military leadership, a missile was fired to shoot down airborne for object at 20,000 feet altitude in u.s. airspace over lake huron in the state of michigan. it raise concerns, including i could be a hazard to civilian aviation. this afforded us the opportunity to avoid impact to people ground while improving chances of debris reng. no indication of civilians heard or affected. e ject was detected sunday morningand sual and radar tracking was maintained. sed on the flightpath an data, they connected this to
12:54 pm
the radar signal picked up o montana. we did not assis to be a kinetic military threat to anything on the ground but assessed it as a safety flight hazard and a threat due to potential surveillance capabilities. the team will now look to recover the object to learn more. and learning more is what a lot of members of congress are calling for. this being the fourth incident since february 4. it was yesterday on cnn's "state of the union" that mike turner was asked about these aerial objects. here is what he said. [video clip] >> when do you expect to be briefed on this? >> the biden administration needs to stop briefing congress to the television set. we are seeing a number of announcements by the administration without any real information getting through to congress. this could be because they do
12:55 pm
not have any information. from coverage we saw, it looks like they took this action without a real understanding of what they were going after but having declared it a hazard. we will see what comes to congress. but i do think there needs to be more engagement within the administration. there was the balloon fiasco where they let it go across the country, with great criticism. >> have objects like these always been moving in and out of u.s. airspace and we're just now learning about them with new technology and shooting them down? or do you think this is a new, recent developing? >> i think it is probably a new, recent development that you have china being so aggressive in entering other countries' airspace and doing so with clear intentions to spy with sophisticated equipment. the scale of this balloon and the technology deployed by china in spying on the u.s. is unprecedented. no other nation has anything like it or has attempted it.
12:56 pm
but there are things that come and go from our airspace that we track that do not rise to the level of this very large sophisticated chinese spy balloon. host: the chairman of the house intelligence committee yesterday, one of the so-called gang of eight who gets special intelligence briefings on capitol hill. members of congress calling for more information from the administration about the handling of these aerial objects. we are asking you this morning what you think. in the past little over a week since that first object was discovered. phone lines. if you support how the biden administration is handling it, (202) 748-8000. if you oppose, (202) 748-8001. if you are unsure, that is ok, too we have a number for you, (202) 748-8002. duck in ohio. what do you think? host: i think we should shoot these objects down.
12:57 pm
i support biden, whatever he does to these objects that are flying over our aerospace because you have to protect our country always. the chinese balloon could have done major damage. but let's knock these things out of the air before they get to us. with how norad is in canada is together, i think we are doing a fantastic job. he is a great president and will do a good job. i am happy for him. thank you. host: norwalk, connecticut, cindy, good morning. caller: hi, good morning. because we do not have that dummy that was in before, this is going on now. he put all the pieces together. nobody cares about when covid came around. we still got our supply chain heavily relying on them. the border is wide open. you know, something is going on,
12:58 pm
and i think most of us know it. i do not like that the administration is being so close to mouth about it, especially in this congress. i just think they're very secretive. we need to know what is going on. so, no, i support them shooting the balloons down, or whatever they are, but i do not support us not knowing and biden just ignores. it is very arrogant. i don't like it. i wish he would trust the american people and let us know what is happening. host: to new york, jules, good morning. what do you think? caller: good morning. i guess i feel really dissolution by the system that we have and they war machine we live within. i do not understand why we cannot use diplomacy, and we have all these military bases across the world. i just feel really confused by
12:59 pm
the state of imperialism still today. i feel like this lays into that, kind of just stoking the fire. host: this is john in dearborn, michigan. good morning. caller: good morning, c-span. i oppose the administration's handling of these balloons. i just think it has been a little too much secrecy for my liking. we do not have a lot of information on these. secondly, they let them traverse across several states, and my own state, michigan, yesterday. i do not think that is very safe. there is plenty of open land in montana or the open peninsula, and they could have shot these down. it is not so much the administration's handling but mainstream media, just doing press releases. you speak of conspiracy theories so long that you do not have a solid foundation to discuss this. host: a lot of questions,
1:00 pm
including in the "wall street journal," editorial pages. today, the question being asked, what is going on up there? the editorial board ending that op-ed by saying, are we seeing this now only because we are suddenly looking for them? do they pose a threat? and we do not mean only to civilian aircraft, and ending by saying, what the hell is going on up there, mr. president? this story not just on the op-ed pages, we show you the front pages of most major newspapers today in the u.s. with stories about this. one interesting note that you can take as you will, this is the china daily, the state newspaper, a global english version, the state newspaper from the communist party of china.
1:01 pm
somebody dropped it on our front door, as they do every day. paging through it today, there is not one mention of the incident yesterday or the balloon from february 4. it is a pretty thick paper today, and not one mention or story about it. that is "china daily." charles in maryland on that line for those who are unsure about the
1:02 pm
caller: i am upset about the way our government is handling this stuff. you think you would be able to tell that. always a dollar short and a dime

-- do business, too much, too interested in making money from everybody all over the world and [indiscernible] about high time mr. biden get out from [indiscernible] before he ruins this country. host: in oklahoma, promised plenty of reaction. yesterday to discuss this topic, the aerial object they are being called with house intelligence committee. it was on this program last week taking calls from our viewers. we talked a little bit about the chinese spy balloon in that discussion. he was on nbc's meet the press yesterday talking about it with chuck todd. here is some of that interview. >> the administration seems to want to downplay these incidents. look, again, the fact a reporter had to drag this out of the
1:04 pm
administration, they do not want to be forthcoming. is that because they do not know what it is, or they do not want to tell us what it is? >> i really cannot answer that because i have not been briefed, either. i think by the way, look. i got a detailed briefing on the first chinese balloon. i think the decision-making process was very good. we own something that we are going to exploit for intelligence. i think the decision-making was good but i would observe that we did not hear about the first balloon until it was over montana. again, there may be reasons for it. maybe it is because i am in politics and spent a lot of of time talking to folks in grocery stores and townhome meetings -- town hall meetings. to fill that gap -- i wish the ministration was quicker to tell us everything they know. >> worst case scenario, this is china basically not taking any lesson from our decision to shoot down the first one.
1:05 pm
if we find out these two objects are of chinese government origin, what does that say about our relationship right now? >> i would be surprised by that. i am careful because i do not know what the second and third objects were. i would be surprised by that. it is fair to say the chinese are probably pretty embarrassed that they let a surveillance platform, the first one, go over the united states. it came -- we now own it and we canceled the trip to the secretary of state. my guess is the other two objects are not chinese and china is doing everything they can right now to keep it as low-profile as possible. who knows. we will not know until the administration fully briefs us on what these things are. host: that was yesterday morning on meet the press. a few hours later, that fourth object was shot down by the u.s. military asking for your reaction this money, your

thoughts on the biden administration handling of those objects. members of congress, plenty of thoughts, as well. congresswoman elissa slotkin who first broke the news on her twitter page yesterday that this fourth object had been shot down. after it was shot down, she said it had been down by pilots in the u.s. national air force. rate work to those who carried out this work in the air and at headquarters. we are interested in what this object was and its purpose. democrat marcy kaptur of ohio, i have confidence in the coming days will piece together details from these airborne incursions over u.s. territory and provide us with the information we need to ensure the security of our airspace and near earth environment. republican senator bill hagerty saing after downing china's spy balloon in north carolina, they shot down three additional ones

in alaska, canada and michigan in the last three days. it is high time for president biden to address the american people who deserve transparency. one more from marjorie taylor greene, there has been space junk, weather balloons, spy balloon's and military advancements for years. all of a sudden, world superpowers are shooting down. lack of briefings are extremely noticeable. those are just a few comments from yesterday. looking for your comments this morning as the sun rises on capitol hill, about 7:15 a.m. eastern. this is chris out of ft. wayne, indiana. caller: good morning. i am chris. i am concerned about
1:08 pm
host: that is chris out of ft. wayne. this is gary, southern ohio. good morning. go ahead. caller: i agree with the previous caller. shot a hole in it, caught it with a helicopter and analyzed it and crashed into the ocean. probably got destroyed. host: what do you think about
1:09 pm
the biden administration deciding not catching it as it is falling down? caller: let it float over our country too long. they knew more than i did about it. i am indifferent about that. host: albuquerque, new mexico. victor, good morning. caller: good morning. host: what are your thoughts? caller: i do not know about this president. i supported every president whether i voted for him or not. i think he is a little too late to the party. he does not react right away. seems like he is hiding everything. that is all my comets. i do not think he is doing a very well job. thank you. host: asheboro, north carolina. this is tim. good morning. caller: good morning. i think it is time we all took a breath. this country has been shooting
1:10 pm
weather balloons for years -- floating weather balloons for years. it is not unusual. i find it interesting in 1960 when -- was shot down by the russians, our initial cover story was it was a weather plane that had gone astray. you know. now, we are getting the same excuse. as far as intelligence gathering , if you know ahead of time, or you suspect ahead of time that the object is intelligence gathering, you have an opportunity to protect yourself. it would be valuable to follow that and see where it is going. remember, a couple weeks ago or
1:11 pm
so, the reports said there were intelligence shifts off the coast of hawaii and one off the coast of south carolina. now, i do not know whether you could connect those dots say this balloon was heading for that intelligence ship off shout carolina -- south carolina, whether we are going to recover it or not, but it would have been more -- taking a little more time now. sometimes, you just got to think like an intelligence person and an intelligent person. i can remember senators talking about why they are not being briefed. i remember several years ago when i cannot keep a secret hat went over to nfa for a donkey and pony show. they came out telling people they could stand to listen to

osama bin laden's phone calls. host: that is tim in north carolina this morning. this is the fourth incident since february the fourth, the u.s. fighter jet shot down what is being called a chinese spy balloon over the south carolina coast. less than a week later, an unidentified object was shot down over alaska. saturday, another object was shot down in northern canada. this incident yesterday, the number of incidents that have occurred since february the fourth, it is the new york times that takes up that topic today. this is from the front page of the new york times. it is not clear if there is suddenly more objects, but what is certain is in the wake of the recent incursion by the chinese spy balloon, the u.s. and canadian military are hypervigilant in flagging some objects that might previously have been allowed to pass. after the transit of the spy balloon this month, norad
1:13 pm
adjusted its radar system to make it more sensitive. as a result, the number of job debt -- number of objects increased. nora is picking up more incursions because it is looking for them, spread by the heightened awareness i the terror of the spy balloon which was over the intercom on -- intercontinental united states for a week before it was shot down. washington post taking a similar line trying to explain the number of these objects. this is from their jump page this morning. detection of most recent incursion is result of additional information from radar and sensors u.s. official said saturday, partly addressing the question of why so many objects had been spotted recently. "we open the filters much like a car buyer unchecking boxes on a website to broaden the parameters of what can be searched." the official cautioned weather
1:14 pm
stepping back to look at more data is yielding more hits, or if these latest incursions are part of a more deliberate action by an unknown country or adversary. that again from the washington post. this is all out of false church, virginia. you are next. caller: good morning. can you hear me? host: yes, sir. caller: listen, i love c-span. i live in the northern virginia area all my life. i am a little upset with c-span and you, not personally, but i think c-span mentioned this happened three times under the trump administration, who who knows with those people in the white house. i am a black man who is almost 70 years old, retired from a job after a heart attack in 2004. i am glad donald trump is out of
1:15 pm
the white house with his wife, the nemesis. joe biden, i am so upset. how could he not come to the cameras over the weekend and explain this to the american people? he knows these white supremacists that support donald trump will go on line and television to some of the congressman who helped set up the insurrection. he knows they are going to attack him and blame it on him and it is a shame he won't come to the cameras. i am a biden supporter, but i feel very angry with him this morning because he cannot come to the cameras and try and get these conspiracy theorists all over the country from giving them a way to attack him. host: that is oliver in virginia. this is terrell in maryland. caller: yes. i feel the exact same way --
1:16 pm
good morning -- that the other caller feels. donald trump was not recognized for the balloons that floated in our airspace under him. mike pompeo goes on maria barcelona's show, says he doesn't know anything about it. bolton says he doesn't know anything about it, don't anybody know anything about it. general jack keane going to maria barcelona's show. and maria is saying, no, the trump administration, we did not know anything about the balloons. general jack keane to maria, rhea, do not be downplaying this. how come we do not know anything? donald trump did not protect us. he did not want to know what was going on. why don't we hear more about that? why don't you tell us more information --? host: on previous incidents,

this is how the new york times puts it today. at the urging of congress, the pentagon and intelligence agencies intensify their study of unexplained incidents that happened near military bases in recent years. the studies of what the intelligence community because unidentified on have identified previously undetected efforts conducted surveillance on american military exercises and bases. many of those unexpended incidents have been balloons and some are now believed to be attempted surveillance activity by china or other powers, both using balloons and surveillance drones. in a public report released last month, the intelligence community said a 366 unexplained incidents -- 163 were later identified as balloons. a related classified documents findings reported out of new york times said at least two incidents at u.s. military bases could be examples of advanced aerial technology, possibly developed by china. that
