8:53 pm
>> former president donald trump in florida after being arraigned today in new york. this evening, we are getting your reaction to the charges against the former president by the manhattan district attorney. you have heard him mention his name, along with these other cases that are pending against the former president. mary in california, republican. you have waited and listened on the phone.
8:54 pm
your reaction. caller:my heart was broken today. i believe this was a politically motivated election interference. i have never seen anybody so persecuted in my entire life. i miss this man. we had a secure order, we had a strong dollar, we had a strong economy, and we were energy independent. the lowest unemployment in years, he destroyed isis, headpiece. i believe in miracles, and although the globalists hate him, i am praying for the united states to protect our sovereign king. the biden measures will do with those 80,000 irs agents he wanted to hire. i'm disgusted, i can't believe this is our country. god bless trump, i am praying, hope you win. host: the former president
8:55 pm
speaking for about 30 minutes this evening. he was making edits to that speech that you just heard with less than 30 minutes until he was scheduled to give his remarks. described as a determined, resolute and up for the challenge. others told abc, trump was angry leaving the court today. cameron in new york. your thoughts on the arraignment and charges and what you heard from the former president. caller:i'm disgusted, i'm curious, is why this seems to be one-sided. i hear a lot about the males but nothing ever came to it. i hear a lot about what is happening with biden. nothing ever came of it. it is very odd to me that the timing happens to be lined up with when they decide they want to move forward around the election. i think it is at -- ridiculous i am not a trump a fan or anything like that. i think this is a big hoax.
8:56 pm
i don't agree with it. host: what do become the argument that michael cohen went to jail for this crime? caller: if anyone commits a crime, they should be held accountable. but i think there is more political backing behind the decisions that are being made here. there are people pulling strings behind the scenes, trying to get their name out there to be part of history, whether it is the da or the doj. they just want to be involved in a matter. i don't dispute anything that mr. cohen has said, but what i am concerned about is what kind of market this leads on our country as far as opening the door for making our political establishment look weak. host: the new york times tweeted, trump lawyers argue
8:57 pm
$130,000 was a personal payment. but the district attorney says mr. trump told michael cohen to try to delay payment until after the election, and avoid paying altogether. at that point it would not matter if the story became public. the argument being, if this was political, and he wouldn't -- he would still want to that information to be secret. he would not want it disclosed. caller: i'm not disputing anything you're saying. but it is all hearsay until we see the evidence. i know they mentioned that things were concealed, we are not able to see things, my biggest question is, it's not that trump gets indicted or if there is -- if he is found guilty, the crime matches what
8:58 pm
he has done, fine. but what happens to everyone else in the political system that has done similar things, what happens to people who have done under the radar for what they have done in their time in politics, and things that have been brought to light. i just don't understand it. i think it seems to be very apolitical -- political to be one-sided and biased because a lot of people are afraid that trump, a big, bad man, is going to come back in office. i think that it took some time after these events had happened in 2016 that all of the sudden, would this be happening if trump was running for president, i don't know. host: you can read the entire indictment. you can find it on our website, c-span.org.
8:59 pm
it is at the top of the website, there is a link, a fact summary posted on our website as well. that is c-span.org, where you can find the president's remarks tonight in their entirety in case you missed it. you can also see alvin bragg, the da news conference from earlier today. mike in gettysburg, pennsylvania, republican. caller: i'm a former democrat. i'm a union person, and changed over to the publican. that sounds like the league so far since trump's speech, that it's 3-1 in favor of trump, three american voters, one from california, one i don't know where he was from, but this book
9:00 pm
well about what they have been listening to -- but they spoke well about whatever listening to. one, c-span, they found that they have convicted trump. i have to sit here and say with a lot of friends who have been in and out of the white house, that the kennedy affairs, the johnson affair was the worst. people don't realize about lyndon johnson, they watches specials, they recognize he was terrible. the clinton and monica lewin's key situation, hillary, the crimes she committed. and then the russian gate attempt. it was ridiculous. the high interest rates. the high food prices. the open borders. war in the country. we are at war, basically. we did not have war under trump.
9:01 pm
allegations of, cartels, the biden cartels and all of the drugs coming into our country. basically, communist china, ukraine. ukraine was a corrupt country. even the democrats for years said we should not be working with them because it is such a corrupt country. like i said, the american people want to see what what has been forced down their throats for the last five years. this man helped our country, put in a lot of good things, may may not like the way he says things but, i will be honest. i'm a union person, i will be voting for trump again. host: all right. that with mike in pennsylvania.
9:02 pm
we go to jackson, mississippi. caller: jackson, michigan. host: you're right, jackson, michigan. a little different. steve, what is your reaction? caller: well, the entire -- this has been a day that is long overdue. i don't think this is the end of everything that will happen. there are two other major indictments that will be piling up on him. i think for years and years, here is a man who is in his 70's and has been a horrible person from the get-go. he'll never change. he is an old man. his time is done. he's now much older than me, but he is too old to be doing what he's doing. i'm embarrassed by him, for the country and for people that are fooled by him. host: you heard the former president reference the other cases, calling his phone call,
9:03 pm
to the georgia secretary of state a perfect call, he references jack smith's investigation, the special prosecutor looking into that. he also referenced a judge in today's case saying he is a trump painting judge. -- trump hating juge. he called him a criminal. mary from south carolina. caller: i agree with the last color completely. -- caller completely. i am saddened that our country is gone to the point where we're led by someone so people. i watched his speech. i never believed the distortion and lies. host: cnn pulled away from their coverage of the former president's remark.
9:04 pm
msnbc never took trump live but stocks still going strong, that was 12 minutes ago. paul, florida, republican. caller: good evening. as a prosecutor and a 40 year law enforcement lawyer, if i had to sum up everything that has happened to this poor man into words throughout his political career, i would have to say absolutely disgusting. the president brought this on himself when he stood beyone the united nations and said the country will never be a socialist nation. that same week is when war was declared against trump. alan bragg, i hate to say this is a lawyer, and as a prosecutor, is a disgrace to the
9:05 pm
legal profession, and does not have the ability himself to stand before that judge and try this case himself. he's allowing two hotshot lawyers, prosecutors to do it for him. he doesn't have the capability to do it. essentially, that is about all i have to say about this disgusting situation. host: patricia in massachusetts. what do you have to say this evening? caller: i have two things to say. here is a man who was standing up for his country, who looks at his family and loves them. and the other thing about him is he's a union man, he speaks for the people, with the working hard. i'm a teacher. all those things about this manner correct. now, you can talk about the other part of him. this is a man trying to run a country. this is the man that should. host: patricia mentioning the former president family. you saw trump's children there
9:06 pm
this evening. he also, according to the hill newspaper, in the audience, kari lake, the former arizona republican gubernatorial candidate was there to support trump. matt gaetz, along with the ceo and marjorie taylor greene, who many of you saw the end of the president's remarks, leaving the room. mike from new york, republican. caller: how are you doing? host: good evening, i should say. what's your reaction? caller: i think it is disgusting. the man tried to help the country and all they are doing is burying him for seven years now. they tried to impeach him again. he wasn't even president the second time they tried to impeach him. they were worried about covid, but they are worried about impeaching him more.
9:07 pm
i don't understand what is going on with this country. i hope things turn out better. it doesn't look too good for us right now. i want to say one thing, you may be left-wing or right, you may say you are wrong and i am right, all i hear is you won and i lost. but the choices you make have a cost. i know we differ on many things. but for america to fly we need both wings. good luck, to you. host: joyce, a republican. caller: yes. i just -- the whole thing is disgusting. they kept talking today. i watched the arraignment. they kept talking today about stormy. well, you know, he isn't the first president accused of things like this. but, what about bill clinton? i mean -- [laughter]
9:08 pm
he had his lover under the desk in the oval office. we're supposed to accept that? hillary clinton, with all the illegal stuff she has done. she keeps getting off. we go after this man that is trying to help us and keep our country good, and make it where we can live again. i'm old. i'm 81 years old. and i am struggling to make each day. but, i just am so furious about the biden administration. host: i will leave it there. mentioning the court proceedings today, a bit about the judge that you heard the president referenced. he's in a new york supreme court justice since 2009. he's a former manhattan district attorney and new york assistant attorney. you heard the president referenced this as well.
9:09 pm
he oversaw the criminal tax fraud against the trump organization and the president's former chief financial officer. from the today show, earlier, around 3:00 p.m. eastern time, this was one of the first photos taken of the former president inside the courtroom. the judge ruled against having cameras in their. but he did allow five still photographers to come in take some pictures, and then they were required to leave out of those proceedings. we saw only pictures, coming out of the court proceedings, the actual arraignment. the washington post says that when the arraignment hearing ended this afternoon, the former president glared for several seconds at alvin bragg, who was sitting at the courtrooms front row. janet from north carolina. caller: oh yes, i have a lot to
9:10 pm
say. i used to be raised as a democrat. i'm now an independent. i just started watching politics when i was in my teens. i have never heard or seen, of anything like this going on. i thought when they were after nixon that was bad enough. he illegally taped the democrats, that was his crime. when you go back, people that are readers,, that like to read, and i am one of those, i have read books, i have read the book from hillary clinton. i have read bill clinton. i have read a lot about the kennedys. everybody forgets that jfk was a
9:11 pm
womanizer. there needs to be books on him. talk about the mob. yet, he is still held as a wonderful president because he was fascinated. that's been 50 years ago and -- 50 years ago. i never heard of joe biden until he was vice president. yet he was supposed to be in the congress for 40 years. what was he doing for 40 years? all these representatives, congressmen, commissioners, mayors, police chiefs, all these people with any power i have never seen crime this bad. i'm 67 years old. i'm a kidney dialysis patient, stage five. i do wash all the news. i watch regular news, i watch
9:12 pm
cnn. host: your point about that is? caller: my point about this is i voted for donald trump in the last election. my husband did not. he regrets the day that he voted for joe biden. he cusses about it every day, that he could've voted for the man who ruined our economy, rui ned our gas, groceries, people's rent. people can barely live. they're trying all they can to do with they can -- do what they can. but host: let's jump to marty, from florida. what was your reaction to the media coverage of today's arraignment, what you learned about the spell any --the charges against the former president? caller: what i am trying to say
9:13 pm
is, no one is above the law. and what donald trump, what he's been charged with, believe it or not, you cannot blame the prosecutor. the district attorney's office because they brought the case in front of a grand jury, that is the citizens of the country that hear the facts of what the charges are. it's up to them. host: you are saying it is a grand jury. just a reminder to you and others, when you call in, you have to mute your television, please listen and talk through your phone. otherwise it is difficult to hear you. caller: yeah, i would like to say this about everything being high, the price of food, clothes, everything else. if they would drop the price of diesel, bring it down to where
9:14 pm
they can haul do stuff with trucks and get it there. host: where talking about the former president being arraigned on criminal charges. what's your reaction? caller: well, they have been needling trump all the way. if they can get him one way, they try to get them another. i would like to ask one question. that is, who has the right to vote? is it just the people in the u.s., or letting them come across the border in voting? host: sarah, scottsdale, arizona. caller: hey, how are you? host: your reaction to the news today? caller: are used to actually work for barack obama for his campaigns. so, i have not voted since then. i have to say that this is absolutely insane. i can't believe that they're going to handle the election like this. host: in what way? caller: he's very passionate.
9:15 pm
i just don't think it reads well politically at all. the way that they went about it. there's fact that cannot be ignored. it seems like they are looking to hand the election to him. biden has plenty of problems already. ugh. i can't believe this is going on. host: you think because he is getting -- gaining in the polls, he is fundraising off of this, is that way think -- he is doing better because of this case? caller: absolutely. desantis has tanked in the polls, he used to be ahead of trump. he dropped 30 to 19 points this week alone. basically everybody is rallying around trump and they're leaving credibility. host: trevon in chicago, republican. caller: how are you doing? host: go ahead, we're listening to you. caller: hey, i think it is a sad
9:16 pm
day for the country. it's an embarrassment for the former president to be indicted. it makes our country look bad. i'm also worried about why trump keeps trying to run to be president. he's started everything with the january 6, he shot himself in the foot so many times when it came to ukraine and the documents. now, paying porn stars. i wonder if the republicans should find somebody else instead of keep going with trump. it's causing so many divisions in the country. i wonder if people just need to rise up and leave him behind. i'm really not sure. that's kind of where my head is that. i don't like the democrats too much, but i'm i'm starting not to like the republicans either, the way they worship him. i don't know.
9:17 pm
i think it is bad for the country. he needs to give in. stop this campaign and fight to these cases because he's got more issues with these cases then he has to become president again. host: we heard from several republicans t reactingo the arraignment news -- reacting to the arraignment news, some pitching fundraising for the former president themselves. the wall street journal notes, minutes before the president was set to enter and please campaign, he sent a fundraising email, in it there was a fake mugshot on a t-shirt that they are now selling on their website if you contributed $47 to the campaign he would get it for free. we heard this reaction from speaker mccarthy, he said,
9:18 pm
republicans will investigate the and manhattan da -- the manhattan d.a.. he suggests that bragg's office receives funds. congress has jurisdiction over the case. of the reporters were noting that even met romney, who voted to convict trump in two senate impeachment trials. this is peter baker with a quote from met romney. i believe his conduct makes him unfit for office, i believe the new york prosecutor has stretched to reach criminal felony charges to fit a political agenda. david, let's hear from you. caller: how are you this evening? good to talk to you, can you hear me? ok ok great. first of all, i wanted to say i am a united states army combat veteran. the first thing i have to say is this -- our country is in a
9:19 pm
downhill spiral, going nowhere, fast. we have a more on in the white house, that is 80 years old -- a moron in the white house that is 80 years old. when he clenches his fist it is because he is feeling the diaper. if you like him, that is your right as an american. but people should not be persecuting trump because of his political beliefs or affiliations, just because he is the front runner. because everybody -- i had a cousin murdered in georgia over the election. it was an election theft. they did steal the election, there is proof it was done. it's crickets. i heard callers say the justice system has to be the same for everybody. that is true. if that is the case, why is bill clinton not in jail for raping women. why is he not being investigated
9:20 pm
over the two teenagers being killed over the drug trade he was involved in? it's a two-tier justice system. if you are republican, you're going to go to jail. i'm and independent. it so obvious. don't people realize what is going on? we are about to go into world war iii because of this idiot in the white house. host: some reaction in text messages. someone from missouri says this is a sad day for -- in history. this is from alan in cincinnati, ohio, this is a long time coming, i like to see this man being held accountable for his actions, there is hope for the country after all. this one from cindy, more of the circle, our politics have been corrupted by our media, we keep letting it happen. i want people's character in the government, not narcissists. all americans should throw away
9:21 pm
-- any of that out out including trump and turn off his tv and radio. speaking of the media, take a look at this picture. this is from dan rivers of itv, taking a picture, turning the camera around on the reporters that were outside of the courtroom today in new york city. keeley in south carolina. caller: hello. host: it is your turn. caller: oh yes. it's bs what is going on. they are after trump because they are scared. host: scared of what? caller: scared of him winning and helping the country. the once in there now are not
9:22 pm
helping their country, their hand hit -- pending it -- they are handing it to hell. caller: i am definitely happy that you are seeing justice. i don't know why people are upset. it wasn't like one person said, ok we are going after donald trump. everyone -- there's a process, due process, which he is going to get like anybody else should get. i don't understand why people are outraged, it is bad for america. after the trump organization was found guilty on multiple charges, he was the head of the company, correct? host: your point? caller: i find it odd that everyone is ok with saying his organization, which is actually charged and criminally convicted, and not being surprised that he is going to be next in line.
9:23 pm
people were working for his company, for him, that pled guilty to felonies. you can't break the law and get away with it. host: the next court case, the next part i should say, will take place in december. nbc reporting earlier that the president could appear next in court on december 4. there is a proposed trial start date. that is january of 2024. jonathan of nbc noting, that is at the very beginning of the gop presidential primary calendar. npr reported today that the defense was -- would like to start the trial, spring of 2024. bernie in pleasantville, oregon, republican. caller: how are you doing? host: fine. your reaction to the arraignment? caller: i think the arraignment was bad.
9:24 pm
it's tearing the country apart. what we are seeing is a loss of confidence in all forms of our local governments. we're seeing disrespect for the usa and the president -- residency. what is going on today we are seeing how your callers are referring to president biden in an uncomplimentary weight mi -- way mit romney is another example of not leading the country to a better place. the media should stop picking aside and try to give us more information so we can make an educated votes when we go in two more years to vote again. right now we are not getting good service from the media because were not getting both sides of the story. -- we are not getting both sides of the story. host: where do you go to get both sides of the story? caller: i have to get respect
9:25 pm
for the information. we have to be able to discuss with each other. you have families, friends, workers who will not talk to their coworkers or family or friends, because they are so adamant, opposed to the politics of today. we've seen the degradation of civility in the politics, in the last 20 years. we have to change that. i don't know the answer. i think we have to start -- stop putting people in the lower categories. we have to come together as americans, and try to think what is best for the country. i don't think what we're doing with trump today is best for the country. i think it is going to tear us apart even more. where we come together, i don't know. we have to stop the slander, the attacks on the people that have been elected by a majority. we have to start giving them support and giving them guidance
9:26 pm
, elect people who go more towards the middle-of-the-road and not to the left or right fringe. i don't know how we will change it. host: there was bernie in pleasantville, oregon. chuck, from maryland, democratic carl or -- caller. caller: thank you for taking my call. i'd like to point out to people who are trying to draw and equivalency between -- an equivalency between the charges of donald trump and charges were not brought against john kennedy. there was no criminal penalty for bill clinton, because of his -- because of their affairs. the charges against donald trump have nothing to do, really, with his dalliance with stormy
9:27 pm
daniels. it's about the illegal payment o f hush money in order to influence an election and it was never properly reported. i think that is an important distinction. i'd also like to point out to those people who say that nothing ever happens to the democrats, that bill clinton was in fact impeached. host: chuck you are referencing the arraignment, the charges brought by the manhattan district attorney. you can find the entire document on our website, c-span.org, if you want to read it. elaine in greenville, south carolina, republican. caller: hi. how are you doing? just like to say, everyone can point fingers but there is no perfect person. we need to just stop all this
9:28 pm
mess and pray for one another and pray for our country no matter who you are. i voted for trump, i would vote for him again. i'm not accusing any democrat. i'm not accusing any republican. go with the law and hear the case if there is a problem, if there is a conviction, we deal with it then. you are all out of sorts with something that has not come. so, just pray for our country, for everybody. host: that was elaine in greenville, south carolina. cory in wisconsin, democratic caller. caller: i am actually an independent. but, i just had a few quick things. october 19, 1973 donald trump versus new york, the district with that situation. everything is laughable when people say that the country is being laughed at. we hear people praising one person. i vote for a president, i will
9:29 pm
not praise one person. that is a decision. you reap what you sow. you do things you shouldn't do. we're not back in any other time, we are in 2023. we're dealing with the situation now, the district attorney does not stand and try the case that is what the v.a.'s are for. for people to blame media, there are easy ways to find the information you need. and thanks for taking my call. host: lucy, clearwater, florida, democratic caller. caller: hi. host: hi, lucy. we are listening to you go ahead, your reaction to the arraignment and charges against the former president. caller: i understand. my thing is this is not a case where -- this is all about the law, this is not about
9:30 pm
republicans or democrats. this is all about the law. if you break the law, then you have to pay for what you do. that's my take on this. i hear people saying the republicans, democrats, i believe this is all about the law. if you break the law, you have to pay. that's my feelings. host: lucy in clearwater, florida. if you missed any of the president's remarks tonight, you can find them, along with the arraignment paperss we talked about, on our website at c-span.org. tomorrow we willick up this conversation on the washington journal at 7:00 a.m. eastern time, continue with your reaction to today's arraignment of the former president. we will end for now. and bring you back to earlie
