shout about the quorum -- decorum. we are happy to see all of you who got dressed up to celebrate the first amendment and the fourth estate. your tickets help fund scholarships for aspiring journalists who will you will learn more about tonight. and our more than 600 members. i know that choosing is a sport in this room. [shushing] we have more than 600 hard-working journalists covering the white house that day in and out.

i want to take a moment to thank the people sitting here with me on this stage. this board is the best in the 109 year history of our organization. [applause] and to quote the president, that isn't hyperbole. or maybe it is. but it was too good to fact-check. the team dedicated countless hours to very unglamorous work. coordinating poles, reviewing membership applications, managing logistics for travel, foreign and mastic, fielding complaints -- foreign and domestic, fielding complaints from their competitors. and sometimes, calling for decorum at the top of our lungs. they put the needs of the press corps ahead of their job, and

certainly their own lives. our corporate attorney, over there, he is always there with advice that is worth far more than we pay him. our executive director that you do not see because he is running around backstage, he does more for this association then i can fathom. thank you, steve. [applause] later this year, to players planned to leave the board, which is hard to imagine because they do so much for the press corps every day, todd gilman from the dallas morning news. [applause] todd has served as a print representative on the board for nine long years. it is hard to overstate how much work he has done for the press corps. the press corps report is the

first draft of history, and he make sure that highly qualified journalists are on duty every single day. and doug, doug everyone. [applause] he has been serving on the board as a photo representative for a very long time. we think it's 24 years but no one is counting. he is a skilled photographer and he make sure's -- he make sure that the photographers are the best position to get the best shot. he is the mayor of the press corps but though we would like him to be mayor for life, he has decided this is his last year on the board. and to show my appreciation i picked out a few items for them from the merge store, can we get that out here. ladies and gentlemen, this is a laxmi thing -- laxmi thing -- la

i would like to think the employer who pays me, and has been my home away from home for more than a decade. more than supportive, npr. most especially, my colleagues on the white house beat. mar-a-lago's and -- mar liasson. and the team on the npr politics podcast who produces the podcast and have picked up my slack a lot in the past year. i want to acknowledge my parents who are the front who gave me, they gave me an early start by listening to npr. we went back to the room to watch television and eat french fries, they thought my job was extremely boring until they found out.

and my husband, ira who in addition to being wicked smart and hilarious and always knows the right thing to say has done more than his fair share of parenting this year. thank you for believing in me. [applause] i am glad to see that senator mccain and governor bush are talking about healing the rift. actually they are thinking about talking about healing their rift. and i would really like to help them. i've got a lot of experience repairing -- i've worked with priests, israelis and palestinians, joe lockhart. david weston. the differences between bush and mccain may be too vast. mccain is bush's running weight -- running mate, hasn't the man suffered enough?

[laughter] [applause] george w. bush has a brand spanking new campaign strategy. he is moving toward the political center, distancing himself from his own party, stealing ideas from the other party. i am so glad that dickman morris has found work again. [applause] you know, the clock is running down on the republicans in congress as well. i feel for them, i do. they only have seven more months to investigate me. that is a lot of pressure. so little time, so many unanswered questions. [laughter] [applause] for example, over the last few

months i've lost 10 pounds. where did they go? [laughter] why haven't i produced them to the independent counsel? how did some of them manage to wind up on -- [laughter] now, some of you may think i'm busy writing my memoirs. i am not concerned about my memoirs, i am concerned about my resume. here is what i have so far. career objective: to say president. if i were being realistic i would consider an executive position with another country.

but of course, i would prefer to stay within the g8. i've been working on this resume deal, i have been getting tips from my staff, they are up on this tough. they say i need to use an active voice with the resume. things like commanded u.s. armed forces. ordered air strikes. served, three terms as president. everyone embellishes a little. designed, built and painted the 21st century. [applause] supervised vice presidents invention of the internet. [laughter] [applause]

generated, attracted, heightened and maintained controversy. i know that lately i have not done a good job at creating controversy. and i'm sorry for that. you all have so much less to report. i guess that's why you're covering and commenting on my mood. my quiet, contemplative mood. my feelings during these final months in office. and in case you might be interested to know, a film crew has been following me around the white house, documenting my remaining time there. it's a strange time in the life of any administration but i think that this short film will show that i have come to terms with it. can we see the film?
