caller: i would like to bring up the subject of -- the nebraska lady, jessica burgess, who was sentenced to two years in prison for helping her daughter have an abortion. and the fact the daughter first off was even sentenced to serve some time. i just hope the state of nebraska would rise up and vote whoever thought that was a good idea out of office. the other point i would like to make, i have a suggestion for you guys. host: yeah. caller: i would not mind you guys airing a show about -- you know how compromise is important in politics. it would be nice if you guys would hear from callers who would call in and say what kind of compromises they would make. host: that is a good idea.
10:46 am
we have explored the idea of compromise and bipartisanship in other segments, but thanks for the idea. mary is on the independent line in michigan. hi there. caller: hi, good morning, john. of course, i am calling from michigan, so i am going to talk about the uaw strike. i wish you would have some of the automotive and general reporters from the detroit three press on to educate. there is a lot of misinformation about what is going on with the union. concessions were made in 2008. there definitely is a two-tiered wage system in the companies. the same person side-by-side doing the same job, making upton $10 an hour less -- my dad, my uncles, all worked through four generations at gm. it was a dirty, hard job. my dad, my uncles and my cousins

bills. when she is in committee and when she is on tv, which is every day, she does not appear to know how congress works. i saw on that menendez, senator menendez. host: yes. caller: i saw on a program last night, they said when the department of justice brings charges against a person, they have a 97% conviction rate. that is pretty good. they found dna and fingerprints on his money. so much for white-collar crime nowadays. thanks a lot, john. host: all right, mary. this is the wall street journal on the uaw strike. uaw strikes and more, gm and stellantis fights but spares for peer the auto workers union on friday said members out on strike and chrysler parent at general motors and stellantis

10:51 am
caller: hello. i want to make a couple quick comments about ukraine and the caller from georgia that said ukraine can't defeat russia by itself. if you knew your history, we did not defeat hitler's by ourselves. the rise of fascism and communism is on the rise around the world. the reason we have all the problems at the border is because we have got a lot of failed states in south america. hello? host: we are with you. we are listening. caller: oh, ok. we need to support the ukraine because hitler did not stop at poland and putin is not going to stop at the ukraine. ok? that is the way things work.
10:52 am
mitch mcconnell is a republican and the other day he said that it is our interest to fund the ukraine. these guys are shrinking ballots. i am a vietnam veteran. i know what it is like to fight. i know what it is like when you are in a divided country and some of our own people run to canada to avoid the draft. these guys are united. they are fighting. it is in our interest to give them all the help we can possibly give them. that is all i have to say. host: the president of ukraine made a personal appeal to not only president biden but members of congress. one of those was michael mccaul, the chair of the house of foreign relations committee -- the house of foreign affairs,. he spoke to reporters after that closed-door meeting with the ukrainian president. [video clip] >> i asked, what you need? what is your plan for victory?

a war of attrition is not going to win this. that is what putin once. -- wants. we cannot afford a war of attrition. we need a plan for victory and we need to host: do it soon. host:back to your calls on the top two story of the week. jess is on the line in nevada on the independent line. caller: hi, yeah. i am independent. i used to lean left until i started watching c-span. i now realize that joe biden is compromised with china and ukraine and russia. we have an atrocity going on at our southern border. good 4 u, marjorie taylor greene , to find out where that money is going. the so-called maga republicans, good for you for sticking around in washington. someone earlier said we are the richest country in the world. that is true, but we waste so much money that goes to things

that do not have any oversight for. there are so many people in this country that only watch cnn, msnbc, fox and newsmax. they do not get the truth. since watching c-span, i have gotten the truth. we need to realize that when donald trump came out of fulton county jail and came to the press and had his statement, everybody covered what he had to say except for cnn and msnbc. they did not want you to know what he had to say. they did not want you to know the truth. wanted you to hear what they think about it. people, wake up. you are being compromised and brainwashed by the so-called mainstream media. watch c-span if you want to know the truth. host: on to michael in pittsburgh on the republican line. good morning. caller: good morning, bill. thank you so much for c-span. i agree with that last caller,
10:56 am
he is an independent caller but i am a republican caller. i believe that c-span is letting america know what is going on. whichever side you are on, it is good for. i do think it is good the republicans have a debate within their party about what is going on with our budget because it is awful we have these huge omnibus bills. we should not have these continued resolutions. we should have regular rule of order. about the funding in ukraine -- marjorie taylor greene made some very good points about ukraine and how mccarthy is trying to come to a compromise and have a separate voting on ukraine, which is a good thing. the other thing is about the vote. i think one of the earlier

did this, the parks and monuments and such in washington were shut down. of course, there were some irate citizens. most irate people were the republicans who came down from the congress and were, oh, so distraught. how could this happen? you need to open these parks right away. these people are citizens. of course, they had started it. and acted like they were silent movie stars from the 1920's. oh, my gosh. how horrible this is. you did it, dumbasses. host: chester, virginia is next. bob on the independent line. hello.
11:01 am
caller: good morning. i was watching some programming where the committee -- the way he treated mr. garland was reprehensible. it was terrible. he would not let the man answer before he would cut him off. what they want to do is turn everybody in the country -- to the justice department so donald trump will not have to account for the laws he has broken and is still breaking. if you go on vacation, do not spend your hard earned money in places like montana, or wherever it is where andy biggs is at. he is weighing the country down.

these maga republicans. the brainwashing, they have been brainwashed so bad they do not know what to do. they have probably got a good lawsuit against the republican party and fox news for brainwashing them. my comments this morning. you all have a good day. host: we have a little more than five minute on your top news story of the day. one of those is the looming potential government shutdown next week if they do not come to an agreement by september 30. just to show you different views on that, republican, democratic and independent. ail om virginia saying, the bi concern of my staff members ithe fact they are going to get phone calls from i going to pay my bills, i amow going to lose my business. michael of texas, a republican on the other hand, said this. for the mas majority when governments shutdown, they go

back to work and it is a normal day for most people. to our democrats line in new york, go ahead. caller: caller: i agree. c-span is just wonderful. i love washington journal. i think it is alarming that apparently republicans are now the pro-putin, pro-russian party. vladimir putin is outwardly trying to promote donald trump getting back in the white house so donald trump will align with him as a fellow authoritarian and tried to obliterate democracy around the world. i think it is disgusting. host: deborah from montgomery, alabama. good morning. caller: good morning.
11:04 am
i just have a few things. donald trump lied. these people are: in about cnn and people not wanting to show trump. -- these people are calling in about cnn and people not wanting to show donald trump. i cannot listen to him for more than i've minutes. he is chaotic and disruptive. what he brought to the table is the vision. and the matter of the border, in my opinion, was bought and paid for by republicans. i was looking at how close they are getting to the migrants. what country will let you get close enough to them after looking in these people's eyes? that is one other thing. i was listening to the other callers and republicans have no legislative agenda.
11:05 am
all they have is chaos and confusion on joe biden and the border. my last thing is, the last good morning -- the last caller was talking about how they have become pro-putin and pro-russian . it was mainly marjorie taylor greene. in my opinion, she looks like she has the bone structure, in my opinion, of a russian so maybe that what she has such a high stance. maybe her background somewhere takes her back to russia. i have no idea. but i wish they would get together and the republicans would stop holding the government hostage. i am a retired government employee. this is crazy. host: all right. we end with a list from marianne
