in res sub t call of chair
11:04 am
caller: bring down the united states. i believe the voters will be very awake come the next election. host: rob is next in new york on
11:05 am
the house speaker's race on the line for others. caller: i'm one of those independents who comes from an upstate district where we voted for president biden but elected a republican congressman. and i will never vote for a republican ever again. i believe that we need a place although that's the best we are going to do and i don't see any problem with mchenry who is the temporary speaker, but i am very high on the sky, ken buck, who's from colorado, but i will not be voting to re-elect my congressman. hope hope what about congressman buck that garners. caller: he seems to me to be sane. he's very articulate.
11:06 am
he's just -- i know they call him a rino but i call a real republican, like a reagan republican. host: christopher, christopher in springfield, oregon, republican line. caller: i can't understand why they wouldn't pick jordan as speaker because he is very conservative and it seems like all the other republicans have one thing in common, they want to secure the border and don't want to be wasting american tax dollars. they would rather concentrate on israel. i don't know if they are getting paid off. i can't believe jordan's numbers went down each time over and over. you would think that most of the republicans were conservative. that's what i can't figure out.
11:07 am
host: there are five now candidates left with byron donalds, kevin hern, mike johnson and austin scott. continuous rounds take place and the votes get shorter and the person who will be at the top. if reporting is right, tom emmer letting that process play out. leslie from california, democrats' line. caller: i'm a democrat i think the democrats really missed an opportunity last week because what they need to do and don't had the opportunity until this weekend, vote for someone on the republican side that no republican can vote for a democrat and needed to vote on
11:08 am
the republican side to be speaker outside of jeffries, they want him first. they need to vote for mchenry. all voted for mchenry they would have gotten three republicans on the other side to say mchenry. if they had done that, you finally get on the speaker that is willing to work with democrats and what is disappointing with jordan, the majority of people want republicans. that's not true. the minority of the people keep winning the problem. that's not how democracy works. jordan was the minority of the first vote. scalise should have had their vote. that's how democracy works. the gerry man deering of the electoral maps they don't want
11:09 am
to acknowledge that 10 million people voted more for biden and say trump, trump, he was the loser every time. host: nicholas in maine on our line for others. caller: i just wish they can sit down and enjoy the spirit of content and get through this. and i feel like the people are upset and we have a reason to be upset but i really think our leaders need to forgive themselves and continue along their way and make the right decision not for the power of the gavel, but for the people who need them. we have a lot of homelessness and different issues going on right now, domestic and foreign and we need to focus how we can get through this together and not separately.
11:10 am
and that's what i feel today. i appreciate you taking my call. i hope you have a wonderful rest of your day. host: new york, republican line, jesse. caller: i live out here in suffolk county and two congressmen and their candidates they are hoping to get to the speaker of the house is zeldin who is a good conservative. mr. emmer, i'm not too familiar with his background, but what i heard, he seems to be a little bit kind of like -- not really a true conservative and that frightens me because everything is based on seniority in there. and you know, we have to get together, we have to get a speaker elected that will
11:11 am
support mr. trump. so we have a war going on in this country and the other three wars, taiwan, ukraine and israel. a lot of people are dissatisfied here. our middle class is going downhill. i served in vietnam two tours and i remember that -- well, politics kind of moved the course of the soldiers and officers that served over there. so i don't know, i just hope that they can get a speaker in the house there that will support mr. trump because he is going to be elected the next president. host: bbc has a short profile of tom emmer currently making him
11:12 am
the third powerful republican in the house. he served as chairman of the national republican congressional committee which works to help party candidates to win elections across the united states. mr. emmer may have difficulties in securing votes from right-wing republicans some who are have criticized him. two of the eight republican speaker candidates chose to do so. he is reporting and going up and at least considerably doing well. the consecutive polls that are taking placejake sherman adds that matt gaetz quietly helping tom emmer. let's hear from courtney, democrats' line in new york. all right.
11:13 am
caller: anyone who is saying this is something the democrats caused, democrats never chose mccarthy in the first place. mccarthy he has been making promises to everyone and blamed democrats. blamed them for the shutdown when they didn't cause the potential shutdown that was about to happen. why would they save mccarthy when that's not the democrats' choice. if they could find a republican they would. but find me one that is not an election denier that certified the vote and would work with democrats in good faith. i don't know you could find one. i want to push back on some of the talking points that i have been hearing from people. inflation is bad and middle class and the opposite is happening.
11:14 am
inflation is a worldwide issue and united states has farred. and the middle class is being bailed out. unemployment is down. wages are up. and -- host: we are going to california on the independent line. caller: thank you for taking my call, there is a very simple thing. if the people in congress simply look at who can tell the truth, who can tell right from wrong and what reality is. if you go with that simple premise who can tell the truth. there's only two people in the running who told the truth and that is emmer and scott.
11:15 am
those two admitted that president biden received 10 million more votes than trump. now as an independent i am looking who among that group could possibly be the middle of the roader or look at reality and the truth and facts and the only two that have possibility of doing that are emmer and scott. host: yesterday tom emmer reportedly spoke with former president trump about his candidacy to the house and that is being reported. the president yesterday in new hampshire filing paperwork. several of the things that the next house speaker will have to include government funding and couple of other issues and that's part of the interview we
11:16 am
had earlier with "roll call" who talked about facing the challenges. one of the things that the new speaker has to do is the spending deadline and how much includes a short-term punt when it comes to funding?
11:17 am
>> there is not a clear leader here. but i think it could look like anything like likely a c.r. not sure how long that would go and something that the speaker candidate would want to decide to try to leverage the power they would have. this situation is definitely affected the government funding process and it's getting harder. host: you can see that whole interview at our website c-span. org. republican line, monthy from garland, texas, republican line. caller: i have a dog named trump. but i hope that trump does not get the nomination because i think we've got to move on.
11:18 am
host: we are talking about the house speaker race. caller: i understand that and republicans ought to pick somebody because they are getting played. if they don't, come election time, half of those republican congressmen will be looking for a job. they need to elect somebody and stand together. host: who should that be in your mind? caller: you know what? i don't care they elect and get somebody in there. they are voting, i'm not. and we've put them in there. that's on us. host: moonu said he asked scott perry if he is ok? he said i'm concerned about spending because he voted for the short-term funding bill to
11:19 am
raise the debt limit. bill is next in california, democrats' line. caller: good morning. i think what the problem is that the people of the house don't have any skin in the game. if they shut down -- what am i trying to say -- if they shut down the federal government, they should not be paid. that's it. host: jay from north carolina, independent line. caller: how are you doing this morning? the thing that i look at is, if we would set term limits for these people, people there -- they are not there anymore for their constituents or do the work of the people. they are doing infighting, this
11:20 am
why and you have the democrats against republicans and republicans against the democrats and republicans want to blame the democrats when it is infighting that is happening in the republican party that is tearing their conference apart. if they would really sit down and look at what they are supposed to with their values even when reagan was in office, they would come around. that means sitting down and coming to consensus with the democrats that we push forth agendas that is going to benefit our american people. host: republican of michigan emmer was telling fox news, asking about saying the house needs to elect a speaker. we have no tame to waste. our speaker dyings igg nature on
11:21 am
the house floor until we are confident we have 217 votes. this is the first part of the process. seen this play out over the last few weeks, the ability within the house to get those votes. stay close to c-span. our main network is following the house and go to website c-span. org. and c-span now. keep taking calls until we hear from house democratic leaders. here are the numbers. representative austin scott, republican of georgia who challenged jim jordan for the
11:22 am
nomination, third candidate to drop from the house speaker pulling out. emmer again with the most votes and now he is hitting 100. will is next, will in new jersey, republican line. caller: democrats are united in their corruption. jim jordan was the most conservative person and in my opinion he should have been. now they complain about gaetz and the group of eight and who speaks about the rinos looking out for themselves and self-interests and lobbies. i am totally supportive of jim jordan. not emmer and i'm glad scott dropped out because they did not go along with the lack of
11:23 am
certification. people forget that biden has been a disaster from afghanistan, internationally. he permitted the oil to be sold by iran. host: this leadership representative elise stefan nick, a member of leadership now saying the pool of initially nine is four. byron donalds, mike johnson, kevin hern. caller: there should be a litmus test to help out one way or the other and that test is no one who voted to dessert file the 2020 election should be anywhere near the speaker's house. they are trying to ensure that we have an autocracy instead of
11:24 am
democracy. i have no problem with democrats working across the aisle or the republicans working across the aisle. but those who dessert filed, they are antidemocratic and violated their oath by voting against who won a free and fair election. and that's my opinion. host: new york is where tina is joining us on our independent line. caller: i pride myself on listening to both sides. when this kevin mccarthy back tracking on how he felt about the 2020 election and everything goes back to this. the speaker issue is just one of them. the republicans need to take back their party and stop being afraid of whatever they are
11:25 am
afraid of and start serving the american people. we are watching. they sit up there we are trying to work for you and point fingers at the democrats and need to start working with democrats and look at their own house. clean up your own house before you start pointing fingers and need to work for us not the other way. get out of their heads about this 2020 election and move on and take back their party and work for us as public servants. that's what this country needs. thank you. host: joe from mississippi -- this is alonzo from texas, republican line. caller: i agree with the gentleman a couple calls back. anyone who voted to dessert file that 2020 election should be nowhere near that speaker's gavel. i'm an african-american man and
11:26 am
been voting up until obama. he was the first democrat i voted for. the republican party is -- i don't want any of them, none of them are worth ascending to the speakership. anybody who has tried to overturn that election, when i can clearly see the rot and corruption in the republican party and blaming it on the democrats, i mean like the other person said clean up your own house first. as far as who should ascend to the speaker's gavel, nobody in the republican party. donalds is the least because as a black man he is the most disingenuous. host: how come no republican meets your standard? caller: refusal to honor the constitution which is the only
11:27 am
is the standard that i adhere to. and they will not adhere to the constitution. we've gone all these years convincing black people that this constitution is the thing and now that we believe they are tap dancing all over the constitution and make me believe that every democrat is corrupt and every republican quhen i'm seeing the lies and corruption and rot in the republican party. host: joe in mississippi, democrats' line. caller: thank you for taking my call. it is appalling to me we have two parties up there and we don't have no one trying to work together and hurts me to say and stand up and pledge allegiance to the flag and standing up and taking that oath. we have people that will stand up. men and women won't stand up the
11:28 am
oath they have taken. it is time to stand up who they was called to be. host: manu, tom emmer getting 100 votes in the last ballot and seems to be moving towards nomination. charles in mesa, arizona, independent line. caller: can you hear me? thank you for taking my call. i would do my best to stay on top of the speaker elections and as a center right voter, i have no problem with congressman emmer. and i would like to also point out that any of our representatives in arizona that can't get on board with someone who voted to certificate tie the
11:29 am
election will never get my vote. there are too many issues right now that have to be dealt with. and without a speaker, it's to the point of it's a circus and i don't know how you can continue to support our representatives that continue to put up candidates that can't get elected. i would like to say any republican from our state that reaches across the lines to help with the democratic party to get a fair election of a speaker, i would not hold that against them. a lot of the people i know down here feel the same way. and it's just to the point where if a party shows you who they are, believe them. and i'm believing that the g.o.p. does not have our best interests at heart. and i'm going to take that into account. host: former arizona republican
11:30 am
representative john shadegg, an op ed piece america needs a house speaker and part of that he writes saying mr. gaetz and the other confederates claimed they voted to vacate the chair because mccarthy voted to not have a government shutdown. and he faced so many. they were entitled to disagree. mr. mccarthy agreed that any member can vacate. no individual member is entitled to or ever going to find a leader that matches their views. more there if you want to read in the "wall street journal" wsj. com. this is from susan in california, republican line. caller: thank you for my call. you have been so respectful of
11:31 am
all the callers. i'm a republican and # 2 years old and voted republican all my life. i am now going to be an independent because of all the infighting in congress. it's embarrassing and not doing america's will. and i thank you for listening. host: reporter adding to the mix of tweets coming from reporters. that representative dan crenshaw worried that the designee and socializing to change the rules on the floor to require a plural atlanta versus a majority.
11:32 am
caller: they want to be able to speak for both parties and the people of the united states. when i hear that jordan are wanting jordan in there, he is basically wanting to shut down the government and unfair and i'm thinking that all the democrats want to do is to have somebody that will listen and able to work together to making it happen. i think the pro tempore speaker should be in there and leave him in there. that's it. host: carry in indiana, independent line. caller: i have been a democrat for many years but voting independent for the last several years. my opinion is the speaker of the house needs to be -- doesn't
11:33 am
need to be bias but open to all ideas, work to compromise. some ideas that come from the left or the right may not seem good to others but may make sense. as far as the deficit the republicans keep complaining about and look back through history and see who blew the biggest holes in the deficit and foreign trade issues started. host: cliff in tennessee, republican line. caller: chris here from tennessee, thank you for taking my call. i would like to put this out here to my fellow citizens. i believe that the parties have divided us. we are not divided as people. our country is great because of
11:34 am
our differences. and reach out to each other, we would be able to resolve our issues. the manifestation in which this issue is occurring before us right now is simply an act of our overall society. we need to have the character of individuals who will reach across lines. i care not where the position but his character. host: how does that relate to the house speaker's race specifically? caller: very specifically, there was a time when we did not run like a parliament. our congress is acting more like a parliament. if you are the majority party, you must vote along the majority lines. people can cross the lines. but what has happened is that both parties have formalized their power and forced those individuals to walk a party
11:35 am
line. you vote what is in the interest of your state and that allows you to negotiate with others in different areas what works in tennessee doesn't work in new york. what works in new york doesn't work in texas. what works in texas doesn't work in ohio. if we accept there are differences, we can then find the commonality that ties us all together. host: washington, d.c., democrats' line. caller: two quick points, if folks are frustrated with the quality of representatives i would encourage to look at rank choice voting. i think the partisanship has led to this second i would like to mention this dysfunction is fueled, propaganda in china and russia and author torian --
11:36 am
authoritarian countries. they are loving this. host: we are waiting to see who emerges in the secret vote taking place on capitol hill. republicans are taking a series of votes to determine the list of nine down to three that is being reported. and one of those who has emerged as designated speaker has to go to the house floor of the full republican conference and that takes place, nobody knows as of yet and outside of capitol hill. we are taking your calls. california on our line for others, hello. caller: other line because i'm a conservative, i am not a republican and would like to point out that kevin mccarthy was ousted because he did not
11:37 am
bring up the 12 separate appropriation bills and several other things. now i hear democrats and independents call in about working across the line. well, did nancy pelosi ever work across the line? nancy pelosi did all democrat issues with an iron f inch st. the day of the rino republican party is coming to an end and we need people like -- host: i have to leave you there and aapologize to conclude this portion. this is the house democratic leadership news conference. we'll take you to that now. >> today is day 21 without a speaker and the other side is
