incumbent, tom keene junior and sue altman, the challenger. our sponsors this evening are aarp new jersey and the new jersey education association. our panelists include david from the new jersey globe, and joey fox, the congressional correspondent for the new jersey globe. we have gone over the rules of the debate prior to airtime and we have also established the order of questions unresponsive. a coin toss was conducted earlier won by sue altman who opted for the second opening statement. so calm keene, you are up first. >> thank you, it is great to be with you this evening. i ran for public office for congress because i wanted to be able to help people. one person i was able to help last year was a disabled veterans.

an individual that had gone into a routine surgery and lost both of his limbs. we found permanent housing for him. we have also found common ground on policies in washington. we have reached across the aisle to find common ground to make sure new jersey is more affordable and make sure we have energy independence and that we have the backs of police. my opponent, since 2019, has been an extreme political activist who will never stand up to the far left wing of his own -- our own party. she has supported every single tax increase, spending increase as well. she is for defunding the police and supported -- out of jail.

those are extreme positions. and they will have extreme consequences with direct results. thank you for hosting the event tonight. i'm asking tonight for people's votes. >> sue altman, over to you and your opening statement and you have 90 seconds. >> i am a former professional basketball player turned teacher, turning anticorruption advocate who fought both parties in trenton and i'm honored to be considered to represent one of the most beautiful districts in the entire country, my home, where i am from, new jersey's seventh district. the next three weeks will determine the course of the country for the next three decades. i'm running because this moment requires political courage. it is something that sadly my opponent does not have. my opponent has been in politics

for 23 years. he knows exactly what he is doing when he dodges the press or hold town halls, when he avoids his constituents. he has an unsolvable problem. the values of his voters in the values of his donors are not the same. his donors, the national republican party, and extreme -- and extremist billionaires represent an insane point of view. they want to ban abortions nationwide. they want to monitor women's pregnancies. they want to end gay marriage and they want to make sure that we are all suffering from a society that is less educated than it should be. but those values don't match the values of this district. this district believes in institutions, personal freedom and women's rights. when i get to congress, i will fight for the protection of

contraception, it how to fight row and i will be accessible. i represent this district and not billionaires and extremists in washington. >> now to our panel, david from the new jersey globe, you are up first. >> congressman, for nearly 250 years your family ancestors have been on the forefront of speaking up regardless of political risk. you have opposed slavery and back to the insurgency candidacy of abraham lincoln and fought for civil-rights since the 19th century. your father and grandfather were proud moderates. you have endorsed donald trump. you voted for some deeply conservative candidates for a speaker like jim jordan and mike johnson. you have not been critical of your own party's performance in congress.

why should the voters of new jersey's seventh district trust you for another four years? >> i have always been an independent boys for the people of this district -- independent voice for the people of this district. i focus on principles and pointed them when supporting the constitution. i have voted [indiscernible] i have been focusing on making sure there is more affordability. to make sure that we can have a stronger country going forward. it is important that each generation is proud and continue to support binding this country together and that is what i've been working on in the

legislature and with congress so we can continue to be strong in that way. >> congressman, one of the things i'm struggling with is understanding why would represent this district when you could have been one of the most moderate, reasonable voices in congress. you voted for jim jordan twice, you endorsed donald trump on the day he was convicted and you had mike johnson into new jersey twice for fundraisers for you. there is a famous notion in politics that if you follow the money, you know where someone's heart is and you seem like a really nice guy but right now what we need is political courage. we need someone that will stand up to trump and stand for women's rights. there are women bleeding out in parking lots right now and there are women who cannot access the reproductive freedom and care they need and other states.

i'm very concerned because with you in congress i worry that if mike johnson -- mike johnson has that gavel we will have a national abortion bent and that will include the women of new jersey. >> my opponent is supported by extreme individuals. she received her money from people who were hidden from the voters and she is a progressive activist who will always side with extreme points of view. bernie sanders calls her the closest party to socialism. she stands with people that want to do extreme harm to the fiscal and values of this country. >> you were an activist for several years and a zealous

voice for new jersey families. you supported a green new deal, medicare for all. some of those positions are among the most far left in american politics. now you are running for congress in a more moderate district and some of your views have changed. your positions have changed. is that just to run in the election? and why should seventh district voters trust you? >> i have broken with the left in two ways. i support israel. i stood up against anti-semitism on the left on the right and i fully support israel's vote -- right to defend itself especially when fighting a two front war bang with iranian proxies. i have apologized for one single tweet i did over four years ago

and i have done my homework and i know what a comprehensive vision is for public safety. we need to invest in recruitment, training and community services because it is unfair to ask police to get whatever they get when they answer a call and put their lives on the line. it is not accurate but i've never broken with the left and for most of my time in new jersey, i have fought against the corruption of both parties, i fought for better balance, odor access and again some of the most powerful people in our entire country who happened to be democrats because i believe him to be corrupt and he has since been indicted. i have the scars to prove that i will stand up for new jersey even at my own personal risk. >> thank you. let's be clear. in 2021, her working families party had the position that

support to israel would be conditional. she said she is for antisemitic candidates in ohio on the congressional level and said we need more people like that. it was not just when she changed jobs seeking office that she changed her position in that regard. and even on the campus of columbia, she waited too long to stand up here also, when you are looking at defunding the police, it wasn't just her tweet. it put cops in harm's way and people know it did. she has put cops in harm's way and made our communities less safe. >> >> the national republican party hasri
