president and in front of his own cabinet were three men whose combined wealth is more than the wealth of the entire bottom half of this country combined. trump could have had and that it furlough a firefighter from california, a schoolteacher, a world war ii veteran. instead trump is not putting the good of americans first, he is putting basis, musk, zuckerberg and billionaires with armies of lobbyists first. the progressive caucus and the democratic caucus will respond every single day by putting actual working people not ultra rich elites first. the progressive caucus has a clear plan while donald trump is getting corrupt ceos a tax break will be on the picket lines with
11:27 pm
american workers progressives will stand up for struggling and vulnerable americans as trump villa noises them and to distract him his own corruption and its own abuse of office for his billionaire buddies. progressives and americans across this country will hold trump accountable for pardoning violent extremists who are convicted of assaulting police officers will hold him accountable for shredding our constitution attempting to take birth right citizen including attempting to make birthright citizens away from families, immigrant families who are here solely complying with the law. when people ask, i have heard all of the time why would trump do such crazy things? like shredding the constitution on doing birthright citizenship and billionaires in the front row of his inauguration, what to do this? is only ever to answer she's doing it for himself or he isn't doing it for us billionaire donors. that is it everything he's going to do is for one of those two
11:28 pm
reasons. progressives are ready to lead our entire caucus and our country to show folks what government can really be about it can be about you it does not have to be about musk, basis and people who can afford lobbyists and people oriented just for them selves for their own political power. i am so proud to be standing up here with leaders in the progressive caucus who have been your for a long time and who are new you will hear from several of them on the issues of the day. we plant and intent on not giving trump a free pass will have these press conference were going to call out his actions that betray his own voters and betray americans every single day first step we have incredible deputy chair. >> thank you. good afternoon everyone. donald trump has been president for 48 hours has rolled back the
11:29 pm
clock on so much of our progress. from ending birthright citizenship to constitutional right guaranteed by the 14th amendment to stopping refugee resettlement, to reinstating his failed program like remain in mexico. immigrants are being persecuted, targeted and treated like criminals. donald trump also rolled back crucial climate initiatives. he withdrew us from the paris climate accord. he vowed to unleash oil and gas drilling declared an energy emergency that ends restriction on fossil fuel directly escalate the climate crisis. the vision donald trump and his administration has, it is one of the division, hate and reversal of progress. as members of the progressive caucus we will continue to provide an alternative vision.
11:30 pm
one centered on transformative change, justice and movement building. we will future the american people deserve to give a clear eyed alternative to mega extremism. i know many of our constituents are tired they are tired of feeling like they don't have people fighting on their behalf. let me be clear we as the progressive caucus are in your corner we will fight every single day to make sure life is better for you we will fight every day against the corruption being unleashed by donald trump and members of his administration. we will fight for a livable future humane and just immigration policies, universal healthcare and a future where you are not just getting by but you are thriving. together we will fight back against donald trump's hateful
11:31 pm
agenda. because as much as the pundits and other elected officials and commentators tried to normalize donald trump presidency what we are witnessing is anything but. none of this is normal. taking away a lower prescription drug costs for vulnerable vulnes is not normal. pandering, pardoning insurrectionist who assaulted police officers in this capitol is not normal. we are going to combat this by showcasing our progressive movement is all about a vision rooted in decency, justice, equality and peace for all. thank you. and now i hand it over to our incredible whip, chuy garcia.
11:32 pm
representative omar. good afternoon to all. after the inauguration speech, we stand together united as progressives against trump's hateful and xenophobic agenda that praise on hard-working people. the impact of the executive orders issued yesterday by trump and his regime is personal to me. i am an immigrant who represents a district with many immigrants. one of every three people is foreign born. they come from mexico, central, south america, italy, poland, ireland, germany, haiti, china among others. and it illinois two out of every seven u.s. citizen children have an immigrant parent. these are hard working mixed status families who deserve to stay together.
11:33 pm
instead donald trump is abusing the power by trying to take away birthright citizenship. this is a blatantly unconstitutional evident by action taken is now by 22 attorneys general in cities across the country. simply put, it is on american to attempt to invalidate our immigrant contributions and histories. but let me be clear immigrants make america great and immigrants help make america's economy moving. as progressives we are here to say we will not let him take away this fundamental rights. on the quest to invalidate immigrants and dehumanize us, trump says also suspended refugee resettlement's, a program that is existed since the 1980s offering a lifeline to refugees and the most dire conditions. and, if it were not enough trump
11:34 pm
wants to completely dismantle the right to seek asylum by reinstating remain in mexico policy. this deterrent policy is inhumane, ineffective and places people in great harm. under the guise of public safety he intends to stop cartels by categorizing them as terrorists. this vilification of immigrants in particular of mexicans will lead us down a dangerous path one that creates more harm and jeopardizes our national security from preying on victims of extortion to opening the door to military interventions and mexico. we must understand the serious implications of cartels as terrorist organizations put let's set the record straight if trump was to address cartel violence he must address the fact 70% of weapons used by the
11:35 pm
cartels come in from the u.s. while we are fact checking let's debunk the myth immigrants are criminals they are 60% less likely to be incarcerated 37% less to commit crimes. we stand here today calling on trump to bring real solutions not propaganda to stoke fear and chaos disguised as policies. we will not be silenced. we will not be afraid. we will defend our diverse immigrant communities and reaffirm the more you try to bury us, the stronger that we will grow back. thank you. next i like to introduce representative mark pocan from wisconsin. >> the progressive congress is ready to be the resistance and lead the resistance in this congress and hold the republicans accountable for what
11:36 pm
they promised the american people in november. i'm going to talk specifically on cost of goods in the economy as well as lgbtqi plus community. they want donald trump promise you lower cost for americans. he didn't. some of the actions he did will actually increase costs for americans. where in the fourth week of the 119th congress we've not seen the bill is gone to lower cost for americans. here is what is happening. the president doesn't tariffs on all goods coming and he's going to increase costs for americans. now, there is a useful time to have terrorists, whether having cheap still going to the united states, putting tariffs on that protects workers here in america. but blanket tariffs do just the opposite. those tariffs could actually drive our grocery prices even higher. on gas and energy costs by him pausing investments in infrastructure bill, by him halting all of the funding for
11:37 pm
the inflation reduction act would have real life ramification on jobs for the thousand good supporting wages that were created by those jobs from those bills. on housing nothing, crickets we've yet to see anything from this president. we know people having a hard time affording rent and mortgages during this economy. we want to see us raise the minimum wage went childcare more affordable we want to ensure quality affordable healthcare for everyone. we want to lower those costs i just talked about of groceries, gas, housing we want to drive down costs and other areas as well. specifically for the lgbtq i plus community is going be tough congress i spent monday not hear the inaugural in-service for martin luther junior day. martin luther king jr. day by meeting with different community one of the communities lgbtq community in my district talking with folks about what they are afraid about and watching those initial executive orders that instantly is going to attack
11:38 pm
people, certain people within the community. those are initiatives were going to fight for respect and equality for everyone. those attacks on that dei initiatives will connect our community and other communities. we want people to know we respect everyone. we want equality for everyone. that's with the progress of cox is going to fight for in our town here that i went introduce next from the great state of pennsylvania representative chris deluzio. >> thank you congressman pocan. hello everyone. i blew summing straightforward about the american dream you work hard, play by the rules you got a shot at it. and folks are angry, right? they are working hard, costs are too high housing, groceries, you name it for the corporate strangle hold on our economy we are feeling it all over the scheduled unanimous sector this probably consolidation driving up costs and screen over small businesses that's hurting workers. mr. pocan said with third week
11:39 pm
of the majority in the house and senate they've done nothing to bring down costs that do nothing to break the corporate stranglehold on our economy. they are not going to they do the bidding of the corporate. washington the care about one thing, juicing their profits on from western pennsylvania we know it is to see an ideology of only profits matter. they matter, so do our job sodas sodasor safety similar dignity s this country. places all over the country understand that history the plotted to strip it for their parts. less like the rust belt and is in this history. to make life less of a ripoff we need more competition when you take a monopolies break the corporate stronghold. republicans president obama talks about this there can be an asteroid coming for planet earth to get in a room with the plant would be? tax giveaways to billing as its own economic program they have. trickle-down economics is never at work for americans never worked for western pennsylvania.
11:40 pm
where i come from it's a paper place or people of this country their paycheck they support those who try to defend us. people like the capitol police who defended this building. who were brutally attacked that day i will give an example in my neck of the woods a gentleman named jordan make victim assaulting officers with the pole, spitting on them throwing stuff at them theft, aiding and abetting for smashing capitol window and more sentenced to four years of prison he has a pardon out. the opposite of public safety at the opposite of law and order these people going to walk free because of donald trump sparta people are disgusted by it my constituents are disgusted by it. i am disgusted by it. it will not distract us from our work to make life better for people. to restore the american dream to bring down costs, defender of freedom, we will find common ground i will find calm growth this president or anyone else if they're going to hurt my people, our people we are going to fight. make no mistake about that. thank you at that altar and osha
11:41 pm
generally from california congressman trent eight. >> thank you mr. deluzio were yielding to me in thank you chair i want to thank our five person first responders and across the country have been working nonstop to put out the fires in southern california. our heart also go out to those who lost their lives and livelihoods as a result of these wildfires. i visited some of the burn sites with my colleagues was how the destruction to homes, businesses and committee centers firsthand. it looks like a war zone out there. but we saw but we hear from our constituents has made it clear our communities need federal disaster aid quickly and now without any conditions attacked. natural disasters do not discriminate between red and blue are they impact everyone just the same it is not fair to
11:42 pm
keep anybody waiting for aid that they need to recover. i hope speaker johnson house republicans do not break historical precedents just to score quick political points or to please the president. we all need to come together to deliver federal aid to our constituents without any conditions attached so they can rebuild their lives in the wake of this disaster. thank you and i yield back. >> will not take questions from the press please state your name in your outlet and handed off to members indicate to me if you're interested in taking the question after that we want to do some breakouts with folks who were not able to speak at the podium today. go ahead. [inaudible] this congress illegal aliens act.
11:43 pm
particularly a lot of new members, freshman. just wondering does it concern you. [inaudible] >> a progressive caucus is united and having immigration system that works for people that is humane. that is legal and that is orderly. republicans in this building and inthe city for decades have undermined that goal every single day. we are united in that vision the bills you just described to not do anything to make people safer or to fix our immigration system. so our goal as a progressive caucus is to recognize make the republican bills are intended to divide the american people and put front-line democratic frontline democratic membersin . the way the progressive caucus of the progressive movement in this country cannot buy is telling the truth as with garcia just mentioned immigrants in
11:44 pm
this country not only contribute that much less likely to commit crime then somebody like me who is born here. to tell the truth these bills in fact do not protect victims of violence in fact they could lead to the deportation and punishment of victims of violence. i also recognize a state the progressive caucus recognize so many of our members right now are having to vote information environment flooded with lies. the progressive caucus is committed to doing the truth out there so all of our members can unite not just run her goals but start uniting around a strategy to push back against republican bills that really do not help and infect and hurt communities and americans want to protect. reporter: it would've been the 52nd anniversary of. [inaudible] [inaudible] reproductive freedom.
11:45 pm
[inaudible] [inaudible] x instrument high priority but happy to turn the answer over. >> i think there's no question reproductive rights are freedom to the or fundamental to the caucus i'm from arizona representing the state we just saw abortion rights being enshrined in our state constitution. at the same time that donald trump was elected as president for this goes to show americans despite their political party preference believe women in this country should have access to reproductive rights, reproductive healthcare these are incredibly important. all we are seeing from the republican party as a continued push to take away these freedoms and move us closer to a national abortion ban i'm personally very concerned. i don't our caucus the entire
11:46 pm
democratic caucus is deeply concerned about this issue. will undoubtedly continue to fight for it. reporter: [inaudible] -muslim democrats lost 24 hours rolling back affirmative action. [inaudible] i wanted with the caucus strategy was on that. [inaudible] >> it is incredibly alarming. we, as a country strive to create a more equitable space for everyone. that missed information and disinformation what pei higher is has been there is an individual hired because of diversity. many of these positions are position in which the person is
11:47 pm
responsible for diversifying the workplace for recruitment, retention for creating a space that's welcoming for everyone. it is unfortunate at this moment they are suspended with pay that we are paying people not to work. to have tax dollars go out to individuals who are actually not doing work at this moment does the opposite of efficiency. many talk about creating a more efficient workplace, that is what dei hired essentially do these people who are in these positions are trying to create an environment where the most efficient people for the job are hired. and so we are going serve think we can again to fight against the misinformation that's out there putting out the correct information on what these titles mean what diversity, equity, inclusion actually stands for and what kind of jobs are going
11:48 pm
to be lost and how that is going to impact the workplace in this country. reporter: [inaudible] >> good afternoon everyone i am mailing standsbury high surf of the natural resources committee newly minted subcommittee ranking member for the doge subcommittee. to address the question on environment specific of going to fight back against donald trump's anti- climate and anti- environmental agenda. on his first day in office, he outlined an energy emergency. what americans need to understand is that we have the highest level of oil and gas
11:49 pm
drilling, not only history of united states, but of any country on the planet right now. and, in spite of that donald trump issued a series of executive orders that rollback our commitments under the paris climate records. that rollback everything that we have done under the inflation reduction act to address our climate emissions. they have rolled it back protections for the outer continental shelf and public lands across america. this is not about spurring energy security in america. it's about giving billionaires and millionaires and multinational oil and gas companies kickbacks for their campaign donations. it's important for folks to remember that donald trump literally invited oil and gas initiatives to mar-a-lago and just months ago actively solicited a billion dollars in campaign donations in exchange for removing us from the paris records as well as basically destroying the clean energy initiative that the buy demonstration did. guess what, donald trump
11:50 pm
delivered on day one. our job as a progressive caucus to fight back against these pushback's. to make sure we are protecting our public lands, our waters were protect the fundamental laws that made it possible for this country and our people to thrive to protect the public health to make sure we are protecting the planet. the specific actions we are going to make sure we fight back against anti- climate agenda. i think there is a lot of interest in engaging internationally with nonstate actors who also have a role as well as to the extent congress can to protect her international agreements. most of the private sector including oil and gas industry would like to have international standards for the paris records remain in place. we will continue and that natural resources committee to push back against any and all assaults on the national environmental policy act and clean air clean water act and the endangered species act. we are going to continue to use
11:51 pm
the platforms we have to make the american people aware and every moment comes about what the trump administration is up too. so, those are some of things we are going to do i'll turn it back. >> thank you think we will take one more and then we will all be available to individual interviews. reporter: a lot of action from the executive orders. i want to ask about refugees. [inaudible] we don't have an indefinite they in. [inaudible] >> my understanding it's a 90 day pause for them to examine. we know there's a reinstatement of what essentially will be the
11:52 pm
muslim man as he is directed the attorney general to look at identifying countries for that man. i cave you're on that refugee resettlement program it's one of the most vetted programs that are out there to bring immigrants into this country. i have constituents who have been waiting especially afghan he constituents who have been waiting to be reunited with their family members. these are people who have risked their lives and put their families in danger in order to help with our countries war in afghanistan. so to abandon them goes against what we say we stand for you have our back we will have your back. that's essentially what we did when the understanding to be in this unfortunate. you have to think about refugees
11:53 pm
or one of the most harmed immigrants in the world. they are often times people who have survived war and severe displacement. there is a reason why they have a special status. i do hope they do reconsider and allow the hundreds of thousands of people whose lives are now in limbo have gone to the vetting process and were just waiting for the visas and the relocation to this country to take place. for that to be reassumed. with that, thank you all. >> think you will very much. please come especially because i know congresswoman were up at the podium please pull them aside and asked them at all this questions resolve the room for another half hour i do think one
11:54 pm
thing that brings all of us together to your point is that donald trump is trying to flood the news with everything that he can and of course a progressive caucus is going to be defending refugees is going to defend our people and our planet trump does not want to be held accountable for his is most egregious actions that he took care of the last couple of days. we are also going to make sure every single day the american people are reminded of his pardons for those people who are convicted for assaulting police officers. we are going to remind the american people regularly about his actions he just took the going target more immigrants for deportation who have no criminal conviction at all were going to make sure the american people are reminded about donald trump's actions a couple days ago she raised prices for medication for americans signed an executive order repealing our protections for americans and he is trying to jacked up prices of pharmaceuticals are big varmint. and so, he's trying to flood the
11:55 pm
news with all these actions. we are going to hold him accountable and defend the mold with the progressive congress will become of the back foot on defense will continue to go on offense and we urge everyone here to not have him let him get away with flooding the zone with so much that he is able to get away with doing the bidding of his building out donors for think it will very much.
