an old truism about presidential approval ratings nothing brings them down that the perception that the economy is going in the wrong direction. nothing brings them back like the perception that the committee is improving. the other thing of value, this poll that we're talking about doesn't take into account the news on friday because most of it was conducted before hand. if the approval rating is going up because the economy is improving, if the economy keeps improving, it would be predicted. >> and his approval is 44, and this is about many subcategories where he's judged by voters, he isheruns far ahead of himself. the sum is greater than the parts. they like the guy whether or not his policies have worked which is tough to beat no matter who it is and what party. >> there is something to be said about the fact that you have

republicans running the country for eight years before obama came in, and the circumstances under which he came in. this is a guy who has been personally popular. he's the kind of guy people have been rooting for. i think of ronald reagan 30 years ago. reagan was a guy that people wanted to cheer for. they liked him personally. he dealt with economic conditions similar to what obama faced. reagan's approval rating fell into the low 30ers two years into his term. he had his fifth straight month of declining unemployment. it was growing, and by the end of the campaign it wasn't close. once people saw credit they wanted to give him credit for it. this will want to give barack obama credit. >> what if there is not? is there a length of the tether or to the leash. >> then you think of george bush senior, the bill clinton message was it's the economy, stupid. when it hit the kids for bush

that year were those mid-year months, when the unemployment spiked from 7.3 to 7.8 just around the time of the convention. that cemented the perception that it was off the rails. that bush had lost the country. the interesting thing there in the last week of that campaign bush had the best economic news of his presidency, but people didn't brief anything was changing. >> i have a question about the approval numbers, but there is one number on the "washington post" pole. 52% said the more they heard romney was the less they liked him. which was higher than the 4% of those who heard more they liked more. is the presidential election academic if those numbers hold? how negative can you go to compensate for that the more we know you the more we don't want to vote for either one of the contenders. >> this has turned into a very sort of ugly process for the

republicans and one that will threaten to be ugly for some time. it doesn't have to be that way. when you think of bush being re-elected, john kerry and all the democrats held their fire in terms of going after one another. kerry came out of that campaign well ahead of bush because all the democrats had done was spend the time going after bush, pointing out why he failed. here you have the opposite. you have gingrich out there calling up romney and here you have romney calling gingrich names and you have gingrich who has been making the democratic case against romney about his tax status and his baines record and it's been a bad season for him. >> do they have any practical value in the federal tax extension. >> the payroll tax extension the republicans are spooked by the poll numbers and then december when they dragged that out and they tried to make a stand on that.

this guy is unacceptable as president. he's pro abortion and liberal. that's quite an attack. >> and it's not as if it's limited to the person personalities involved 54% say they disapprove of what the g.o.p. candidates are saying. no matter how much pacs you have working for you, can you buy your way out of that? >> it's very tough. it's all on videotape as you well know. and part of the narrative that newt gringrich is pushing forward with now there is no difference between putting mitt romney and obama. it goes to the heart of the obama re-election campaign that mitt romney has no core. that's what they're going to collect all those videotapes and put them into ads. what is mitt romney, is he a moderate? when he crafted the healthcare plan in massachusetts or should we believe what he said most recently.

he'll repeal the healthcare bill. i think that is going to be the essential argument that really can't get a good feel for this guy, where is his core. and newt gringrich hanging in this race, pushes for that argument every day. >> and the longer he hangs in it, does it make his eventually endorsement of romney less effective and less plausible when it comes to that? unless things map out entirely differently than the way this look like now, gingrich does not have a chance in this race. >> it will be tough when newt gringrich stand before mitt romney and says this is the guy. they always do come to this. they will at some point come together. but man all that videotape and all the things that newt gringrich said i think is much tougher for people to say this is a warm embrace. i can't imagine it be a warm embrace. remember jon huntsman's endorsement of mitt romney

right to collectively bargain. backback to arizona. it's already a right to work state. what would these measures do in terms of limited roles for unions? >> the good news is that even though unions have legally limited roles in arizona we do have some very strong unions such as police, firefighters and teachers. and they work hard to keep those workers and those communities safe. these bills would completely eliminate their ability to engage in things like collective bargaining which ensures you have fair wages for firefighters, police officers. it ensures that you protect pensions for teachers. it ensures that those voices could come down to the capitol and lobby on behalf of the communities that they serve, students, individuals who need the protection of police and fire. so it really eliminates these unions ability to protect the communities of which they serve. >> kirsten, i know the primary answer to why the republicans are doing this state after state is because of people who support their candidacies tell them to.

i know that's the actual answer. but in wisconsin, they have scott walker in office for a full term, and that's certainly a large question. casic went down in flames in ohio as they tried to push this through. are there, in fact, republicans in arizona who belong to unions and republicans simply forgot about them? is there enough of a blow back to make a difference here? >> in some of our unions, particularly amongst police and fire the majority are republicans. they made a mistake and miscalculated who the people in the working families of arizona are. and cleat i think we'll see if they don't change, you'll see a struggle just as powerful as you saw in wisconsin and ohio right here on the ground in arizona. >> so much is a struggle on the ground in arizona like i have to tell you that.

>> right. >> is there some--any way you can measure the overall under current in the state? is there a sense--even for those who might actually go along with these sort of push backs against what we consider 21st century america. are there people who are tired of being in this change confrontational jan brewer's bony finger in barack obama's chest scene that has become apparent in your state the last few years? >> i think that's a really important point. the truth is most arizonaens are common-sense people who want to take care of their families. so the picture that you see in arizona over the media isú caricature. and it describes only a few elements of our government. it does not represent the true attitudes of the people in arizona. i think what we're starting to see, we've seen it with the recall election of russell pierce.
