trillions of dollars of debt to the deficit. santorum suffers as romney and paul combine to take him down. romney clearly enjoying the art math this morning. >> it was kind of an interesting night. i didn't expect what happened. we saw in this case senator santorum explain most of the night why he did or voted for things he disagreed with. >> that and a few more things of note starting with the republican audience, like those which booed the soldier the gay soldier, those who cheered for texas executions, last night's crowds not letting its fans down as the question was asked about a recent controversy. >> birth control is the latest hot topic. which candidate believes in birth control and if not why. [ booing ] >> you know, politics is a team sport, folks. >> ron paul showing an affinity for team romney. >> you have a new television ad labeling him a fake. why? >> because he's a fake. >> so consist mat a fake that even a connoisseur of personal fakery you romney can hardly believe his good fortune. >> he talked about that this as taking one for the team. i wonder which team he was taking it for. my team is the more than people, not the insiders in washington. >> how about the insiders with

numbers within the margin of error in the latest detroit free press poll and new american research group poll. the president registered voters favor mr. obama in 2008, giving him slight majorities over mitt romney. registered voters, not likely voters and the rick santorum, registered voters. president obama sounding confident in an interview. >> i've got another five years coming up. we're going to get this done. >> for more on the debate and gop field moving towards tuesday's primaries in michigan and arizona i'm joined by david catney. the boos for birth control. does it matter if they were booing birth control or the mad raters audacity in asking about it? >> i think it does matter, but it's very instructive of the i mean the worry that is
11:08 pm
overcoming even some of the base parts of the republican party on how these social issues are getting the republicans off track. anytime mitt romney or rick santorum is diving into birth control and whether women should be allowed that covered under their insurance that's getting off message. that's not talking the economy and jobs which is more of a winning message for them against president obama. remember, there's videotape out there of rick santorum last fall questioning, you know, birth control at all. not only being covered under insurance, but questioning using it at all in any circumstances. that videotape is so damaging in a potential general election, especially with female voters and independent voters overall. >> the gingrich accusation about the president on the topic of birth control supporting legallized infanticide, is it
11:09 pm
the newt gingrich they mean when they're afraid under any day that ends in the letter y.? >> this is vintage gingrich going back to debates pass where he would roll out rhetoric regularly, sort of took a side step from that in the two prior debates where he wasn't as aggressive. i sort of this this was an outlier moment for gingrich. he got some lobs in against president obama and of course the elite media but really didn't throw any hard rights against romney or santorum, who he needs to take shots at right now. this is a guy who said he was going to be the republican nominee just a few months ago and now he is flailing in third place and you know, he also describes himself as cheerful, and i don't know if that is the best tact for newt gingrich right now to be cheerful and sort of sidelined on the side of
11:10 pm
this debate. >> did the general analysis after last night was santorum backed himself into a number of corners out of which he could not get. i voted for it, even though i didn't vote for taking it for the team. does this prove this you're a senator, you shouldn't run for president because true believers don't want to hear the labor pains, they just want to see the baby they want to see? >> it's the legislative garble that santorum got mired into last night. i will give him some credit, though on a point. he did apologize and say he was wrong on a vote. how often do you hear a politician say i took this vote and i was wrong? romney certainly hasn't done that with health care. >> they booed him. what is the motive for doing that if you're going to get booed anyway? just lie your way through? >> i think he was trying to show that i can admit when i'm wrong
11:11 pm
mitt romney hasn't ever. with this audience? no, i think this audience was with romney. as a journalist, you like to hear once in a while when a politician said hey, i got a vote wrong. that doesn't mean he's going to score well with the republican primary voters, but it does make rick santorum more authentic. the problem is santorum never pivoted to romney made the second part of the attack to say mitt you have never apologized for setting the template for obama care or being pro choice. those are messages that could have sold to this audience. he never pivoted and got stuck explaining his old votes and senatorial procedure trying to be on the team for legislative accomplishment. that doesn't sell a primary voter. >> dave, thanks for your time tonight.

>> thank you. >> the four republican tax plans coming under scrutiny a day after the president had put out his on plan looking to lower most corporate tax rates while dropping manufacture tax rates to 25%. u.s. budget watch a project of the committee for a responsible budget takes a middle path in evaluating saying newt gingrich's plan would add seven drillun to the national debt, santorum would tack on 4 trillion plus, mitt romney's plan would only cost $250 billion in cadet. ron palm's plan would cut $2.2 trillion in debt slashing entitlements and the state democratic and eliminating no fewer than five other federal departments. under the president's plan, i'm joined by our guest.
11:13 pm
thank you for your time, sir. >> good evening, keith. >> you blogged today that "corporations don't need a tax cut, why is obama proposing one." his argument was international competitiveness, but you described the corporations are almost literally rolling in cash. why is the president proposing taxes when the agreeing is tilting against it? >> it's hard to figure out keith. we have this big budget deficit and we've got to deal with it somehow in the out years. corporations are rolling in money. corporation tax revenues as a total are down to 10% 33% under dwight eisenhower. it's hard to understand why he feels compelled to reduce tax rates. the cynic would say he's doing
11:14 pm
it because after all there are a lot of campaign contributions coming in from big corporations and c.e.o.'s. i'm not quite that cynical. i think there are people in the treasury department that say we you got to rationalize the tax system get rid of loopholes make it neutral. i think there are political advisers saying let's take away an issue they are going to nail you with, corporate taxes too high relative to our international competitors. to me, those are not very good reasons, but nevertheless, that's what we have. >> could the argument be made that it looks bad that there is some quid pro quo. let's make sure no one can inherit the full riches of the father the wall street journal
11:15 pm
saying congress should pass allows that would break up the big banks. it seems suspicious that that would be followed up by a presidential plan to reduce corporate taxes. >> well, it's a little odd particularly not only given everything you've just said, but remember that wonderful speech the president made on december 6 in kansas, in which he set out the big challenge in the future being overcoming widening equality, more and more of the national gains being taken and making democracy stronger by building a middle class and dealing with other problems that the nation has. i would hope, maybe i hope this is an aberration. i hope the president goes on to really come up with a set of proposals that make his words in kansas in december the kind of words that really have content in this election season. >> on the other side of this, the santorum and romney and gingrich plans that would
11:16 pm
actually add billions in some case trillions to the deficit obviously they don't expect people doing the math to read those proposals. they don't want to check it out they don't want to hit the link, read the details do the math. having left this material on the battlefield, isn't each plan exactly what the president would need in that future debate against whoever it is against on the budget? >> oh, absolutely. i mean, these because they are cutting taxes on the wealthy they are cutting corporate taxes much more than the president is proposing, they are going to be creating according to non-partisan grooms, this report that you referred to is a non-partisan group known for playing it absolutely straight, and they are showing guy janetic, six seven trillion-dollar deficits as a result or four or five, $6 trillion deficits as a result of these tax cuts at a time when you've got a budget deficit hanging over everybody's head.
11:17 pm
it is the utter irresponsibility of these republicans. i think ron paul is the only republican that comes out with a plan that has any relevance in terms of the budget deficit of the future, but ron paul is getting rid of most of government. you can deal with the budget deficit if you get rid of most of government and if you don't want to raise taxes. that's not exactly what most people want. >> you sign up for that insurance plan that does not pay you anything for a claim, you have the perfect plan. >> get rid of medicare, social security education and roads yeah, you can reduce the budget deficit. >> only money coming in, none going out. it's perfect. even i can understand it. many thanks again for some of your time tonight. >> thanks, keith. >> the real money is in super packs. how do you defeat citizen's united without the kind of money

11:23 pm
>> good to see you. >> keith, good to see you. >> is there any other way to beat citizens united besides utilizing the super money you can raise by citizen's united in order to elect people who can overturn it. >> you don't need to raise super pack money. i made it very clear that the president is in great position and because it looks like he's a little more on the side of the average person. this only undercuts that. i made it clear to the obama people that i would publicly criticize this decision. what it comes down to, i've got two choice, sit in the back yard and have a nice cigar and have somebody tell me who won the election because it doesn't matter. the other choice is to actually fight for the guy who will appoint supreme court justice who at least possibly overturn this thing. i have a sneaking suspicion that the people that the republicans would appoint wouldn't even consider overturning it. that's the whole ballgame.
11:24 pm
that's it. we've got to overturn this thing. it requires one justice to have a different attitude. >> if that's the hole ballgame, aren't all the resources necessary to you to win that ballgame, if suddenly one team in baseball were permitted four strikes, would you say you're only going to take three strikes? >> if you believe that the only resources that a politician has is money then you're right but i don't. i think the resources you have are people, a message and understanding that one side is on the side of most people in this country and the other side isn't. the sad thing is resources have become equal with money. i unilaterally disarmed in 2008. it was the message that we weren't part of that system that allowed us to prevail even though it was close. i really don't think it's a good idea to say well, we're going to become part of this system and we'll change it later because it's kind of hard to believe.
11:25 pm
>> this is not intended, although it will sound like a compliment to you and the president, bottled be described as exceptional candidates under those circumstances. every other method other than replacing current members of the supreme court and for all we know they are going to live to be 120 all other methods for overturning involve democratic legislators or democratic senate or house and all the resources brought to bear against democrats and liberals are overwhelming. how do you not allow that part of the team to take the resources that are made available to them by this heinous citizens united decision? >> because it's wrong. it often doesn't work, because people catch on to the corruption of it and third it's the result you get. if democratic candidates at all

levels across the country get elected by this system, you know what you're going to get? the same kind of corrupt policy we got from both rums and departments before the soft money system was shut down. they brought us the consolidation of the media which has been devastating trade agreements that shipped our jobs overseas. democrats might win but you'll get corporate democrats. you won't get somebody fighting for the average citizen. >> what do you do about this reality in the gop primary, 19 donors have accounted for $47 million in contributions nearly all of it to super packs. there is a body of belief that this election is not going to become an auction, it is an auction right now. it certainly is an auction on the republican side, but there is a practical possibility with enough money with the republicans could run a dead

11:39 pm
dodged the question, bullied the reporter and refused to oh answer the question. he was trying to pretend on one hand that he was brave and bold on the other hand running away from the question. they have very little in common. while barack obama is far prom perfect on our issues, he has done quite a bit. i mentioned doma and he also know about don't ask don't tell and he abolished that. there's one place i will agree on, that is barack obama should evolve already and the reason is because it allows people like christie to hide behind the president and we saw that again today. in the court case in california overturning proposition eight those that wanted to move it to the full ninth circuit, they had cited barack obama just like christie did as a reason why that it was not discriminatory

to ban marriage equality in california. >> there's something about evolution and the people's opinions. the governor claims that the president is trying to have it both ways when he shouted on that set, this is the sort of political cow wardice we don't want. he has not let a personal opinion interfere with a policy decision which is the reverse of christie. >> christie looks at the polls showing 70% of people 18-30 right now support marriage equality. he sees the writing on the wall. just today maryland became the eighth state to approve same-sex marriage around it's very exciting. was, with the district of columbia, as well. he understands two things. number one the current republican party you can't get elected unless you're an

extremist like rick sap or you're pretending romney. he also believes that if one of these guys gets the nomination, which they will, and there's a landslide, and the republican party has to change, that he's going to have to become more mainstream when he actually runs for president of the united states. so he's trying to appeal to the far right and then also trying to not look extreme by saying we can send this to the voters. many people are seeing through it and he certainly doesn't deserve any credit. if anything, his position that we should actually vote on civil rights is a disgrace. >> ultimately, do you find something regulatory about the fact that christie was trying to hide behind the president and the case in san francisco sending it to the ninth hiding behind the president. is there a sense that their position is en route to becoming the horse and buggy of the 21st century and the only argument is the president who we
