>> i'm thinking about this and i said we need to pray about it. she said, no, i'm not going to pray about it. god couldn't possibly want you to do this. >> i always did feel always in my heart that god had big plans for rick. and eventually it was there. you know, tugging at my heart. >> hmm, it isn't the first time he haven't heard this. in 2000 when considering the run for president george w bush told evangelist james robinson, i feel like god wants me to run for president. then early last year before declaring her candidacy former g.o.p. candidate michelle bachmann also said she had that calling and tugging on her heart. she had also been called by god to run for congress in 2006. this is not to doubt the con conviction of these candidates or sincere beliefs but it seems with the santorum decline god

moves in mysterious ways. lee, good to have you tonight. >> thanks for having me. >> rick santorum in 2008 said that satan is setting his sights on america. now his wife is saying that god has called on the family to make this run. are the santorums setting up the narrative that satan is after us, and god has called in rick santorum to fight back? >> i think he's getting his strategy from maybe a stephen king novel like crossed with charlie and the chocolate factory. this is the man who believes that satan is talking to him in his head. he's hearing voices. if i told people that the tooth fairy was telling me how to run the country would you give me access to nuclear weapons? >> god is clearly not in control of poll numbers and santorum's are declining so how might a believer explain the path that god has santorum on now since santorum does not seem to be
8:55 pm
heading towards the nomination. >> i have a sneaky suspension that god just needed entertainment. people would pay to watch bears fight monkeys. you know, no one ever thought that the monkey would have a shot, but they told the monty that he had an oh shot. i think santorum is a monkey. we are more civil. we put a sweater vest on the monkey. >> maybe that's an act of god. >> bush said in 2007 that he was called by god to run. and in 2003 famously said that he was on a mission from god to invade iraq and afghanistan. why didn't god tell george w. bush and there were no wmds. >> it's like god is fine with killing lots and lots of his creations, lots of civilians that god seems to be very against colored people and women
8:56 pm
and gay people. basically their god is only for about 12 rich white men. that's all he's looking after. >> and tim tebow. >> michigan bachmann was also called upon by god to run for the g.o.p. nomination. did god change her mind? assuming god is a she, did god change her mind about bachmann and where weather did she endorse both bachmann and santorum. >> sometimes you put money on the bear and on the monkey to cover all bases. this has made a clown car look roomy. just so many crammed in there i've never seen so many--just this google of bobble-headed twits. >> does god ever call on people to get out of the race? if so, does the almighty not have newt gringrich's phone
8:57 pm
number or e-mail or twitter? >> no, newt gringrich is in--he's in the race because he's on god's holy mission to get children back on the factory floor, okay. this is he speaking for the patron saint of child laborer i think. >> politics is one of the few possessions where god is involved in the staffing process. you never hear an used car salesman say i got a calling from god to sell this used car. why does god focus on politics and storks? >> god for some odd reason, he never gets blamed for the game-losing shot. he or she never tells anyone to get out of the race. apparently he's not involved in that kind of thing and never touches those. >> candidates seem to be more openly religious than once more. you see santorum criticizeing obama oppressing--when you're talking about satan targeting
8:58 pm
the united states and god is calling on him to be president. >> they reverse the word freedom. they think freedom is their freedom to press their religion on other people. like orwell would stab someone in years if he were around. you have the freedom to believe whatever it is you want. i have the freedom to say you make a block of cheese look bright. i have the freedom to say you're a puppet show to distract everyone from the corporate pillaging that continues to go on in this country by ceos that make charlie sheen's moral compass look like marriott harriet tub man. >> maybe this is god saying let's have fun in 2012. >> i think god is george burns. just an entertainer looking for some good times good ratings. >> thanks for your time tonight. we appreciate it. >> thank you. >> that's our report for tonight.
