>> this is the romney rule. his belief is that the wealthiest should pay a lower rate because they make their money off of investments. and the president's belief is if you are a millionaire you shouldn't make less that's simple common sense. >> 65% were in favor of all of the most wealthy pay equal taxes. >> that's right. we have seen this from the republican party over the past year. the president has a bipartisan job's act which would have created 2 million jobs filled with programs that democrats and republicans had all supported in the past, that governor romney wouldn't support. >> senator whitehouse said this

is one of those issues where if the american people are back watching our chance of winning the vote is greatly improved. because we'll hit the same gridlock that we always do. but when you look at polls like that, how do you spin that? how do you go here is where we are against what 65% of america is for. >> it's a return to the policy that got us in the crisis in the first place. more tax cuts for millionaires and billionaires repealing wall street reform and letting ball street write its own rules again. we were told that if we passed those tax cuts for the wealthiest that growth would be unleashed. >> what kind of political gift was to have george w. bush

expressing those thoughts a couple of days ago. here he is again with the same line, you don't want to tax the job creators. i ask everyone this. why hasn't anyone ever explained why the job creatored, quote unquote, had those tax cuts why were we losing 700,000 jobs a month. >> exactly. and the job creation in this administration is at a much faster rate than the bush administration. so these are the same policies that republicans have proposed for generations. but the fact is that broad-based prosperity has never trickled down from the top when we give them special tax cuts. romney would actually go above

and beyond the bush administration and extend $5 trillion in tax cuts and make seniors and the middle class foot the bill. he never explains how he is going to pay for those tax cuts. >> i find it curious that he has refused to emulate his father in releasing all of their tax returns for several years. his campaign spokesman said just 2010 and 2011 that's sufficient. >> he set the standard of 23 years, he thought when he was being vetted for vice president that john mccain deserved 23 years of return so he could be evaluated. we know those returns are available. and he provided them to the mccain campaign. his own father set the 12-year standard.

president bush set a standard going back to his governor tenure. >> well, if one had a suspicious mind, one might think gee, i wonder if it is even worse than the off-shore accounts? >> that's why there are so many unanswered questions here about whether he is paying the income tax by keeping his investments offshore. where he incorporated offshore in bermuda, and he is asking the american people to elect him based on his tenure as a corporate buyout specialist. but not sharing the information about his tenure there. >> we see this same play every time that the president is up against just unprecedented

obstructionism. of course the bush era tax cuts are set to expire. how do you think or hope this will play out politically? >> you pointed out this has brood-based public support. it is something that president re -- reagan supported in the past. if they oppose things that the president proposed whether or not they had bipartisan support in the past. and i think we're going to see in november that that is a strategy that the american people reject. it doesn't put the country first, and the real way to ensure that we have brood based lasting changes is to recollect the president and elect a democratic congress.

>> that's right. spending has been bad, and it has gotten catastrophically worse then passing citizens united. but do we want to have the federal election commission that actually shows up and does the job? it is not taking into account nominations the president has sent over. and if they are not going to do their job, that shouldn't stop you from doing yours. appoint people who will be willing to put their partisan guns at the door and basically enforce existing law. that would help a lot. there is an anormous amount of abuse, obviously in these super pacs, it's the campaign managers and operatives who go from one

to another. and that can be stopped by the fec enforcing existing law. >> congressman, the recess appointments that the president has done that has changed the politics and the calculus in the senate. because, again, you can say oh that's unprecedented. but they are just trying to hold up everything. >> that's exactly right. it's very clear the republicans are fighting for failure. mitch mcconnell has said his goal is to make president obama a one-term president. and he doesn't have a rierth to do that in respect to taking up the responsibility of the senate to at least vote yes or no on presidential nominees. if he wants to fight him in the campaign fine, but if mitch mcconnell is going to prohibit, in effect the senate from tocking up on a yes or no vote,

the president has to act. so we're really urging the president to do, i think the obvious thing and the right thing. >> well, you know, it's interesting, the citizens united, we were talking about polling, and 75, 80% of the people are against the citizens united yule -- ruling. and you are trying to mitigate the impact. >> yes, and have a cop on the beat at least doing its job. saying there is supposed to be a clear wall between the campaign and the super pacs. a second thing we can do is a lot of these super pacs are masquerading as social welfare organizations. that obviously makes no sense, so we have contacted the irs and said, hey, do your job. that doesn't require a new law

it requires enforcement of an existing law. and we have these loopy billionaires out there, like the casino guy in vegas, and are -- and can writing checks for $25 million to keep basically a dead candidate on a pulse -- >> hasn't it been enjoyable to at least watch them whining about the super pacs during the republican primary. >> it is. we could have two strategies we could try to make them spending it all, but basically i think it would be easier to do what vermonters said where they passed a bill on corporatehood, saying hey there is a difference between a corporation and an individual as a person. >> it's three-pronged, right. you want a federal disclosure law -- there are reasonable ways to try to mitigate this

correct? >> well, that's right. people are spending money on campaigns. they really shouldn't. but literally to have a major corporation write millions of dollars from their account, they shouldn't be able to do that but if they are going to do it under existing law, they should have to have their ceo go on and do a disclaimer just like a candidate does. why shouldn't the head of a major corporation say i'm chief executive officer of x, and i approve it. secondly they should have to get shareholder permission. anybody with any kind of requirement account owns some stocks. if you want your money in that company to be used to be reinvested or used to have a better product and i think most shareholders would strongly object to having the

corporations using the shareholder money in effect on political campaigns. >> yep. representative it is really important stuff, and the vast majority of the american people are behind you on. and i'm stephanie miller i approve this interview. mostly false because he is selectively choosing his time periods. so everybody has called this a man-session, because men lost disproportionately the number of jobs, but that all happened before barack obama took office in the months before. but romney is acting as though the world began on january 20th, 2009 and that everything that happened since not withstanding the fact obviously the president overtook during the middle of the recession, didn't happen. so i think this selective timing just really adds on the pyre of bad things he has done on behalf of women. and yesterday this whole question from [ inaudible ] about whether she supported lilly ledbetter -- and the six-second pause -- >> yeah, i loved that.

>> what now? >> yeah we'll get back to you on this press conference. >> it was the sarah palin answer. we'll have to get back to you. >> but they are the one that hosted this press conference so say how great he was for women. >> i know. i know. did you see that he enlists republican women who opposed equal pay bills to attack obama on his behalf. it really was incredible. mary bow know mac and kathy mcmorris rogers both of whom voted against the act. >> it's astonishing how he is trying to make up for lost ground by moving backgrounds. >> he supports pay equity but is not looking to change current law. >> right. and he never publicly came out

when scott walker rescinded pay equity. after he said that he wouldn't resend it there were attacks on him. and they are putting him in a very, very tough position but he himself has landed square right in the middle of hypocrisy central. >> and lieutenant governor karen heely, she publicly condemned president obama for including screening for women. >> yeah, and then coming out publicly, saying if you don't

believe there is a war on women go home and talk to your daughters, and wives, and sisters. they limit choice, limit contraception, it is -- i don't know, i just don't understand how they could have stepped in it so badly, except it is the far right. >> and it is mitt romney. so that's how. it is interesting -- again, first of all he keeps going out there with something that is called a bald-faced lie, and then keeps repeating it. this is the biggest gender gap we have seen in a while. >> women are not stupid either. it is a huge gender gap because they keep assuming they can pull the wool over women's eyes. so first of all deny what is going on in the states and then to pull out the selective number

to make it sound like only women have lost jobs, because women know that their husbands and brothers, and fathers have lost more jobs. the women's jobs that have been lost are largely related to the public sector works like health care and teaching. >> i love that romney had the nerve yesterday to hold up the chart accusing obama of setting women back 20 years. it's president obama that set women back 20 years. it just doesn't pass the sniff test, does it? >> we're called the war room on my show, so we're constantly talking about what is going on behind the scenes in the war room of these candidates and no doubt because of that huge gender gap his advisors are

saying you have got to do something about women, but the things they are choosing to harp on are hurting him. there's no -- you know selective numbers are one thing, but the fact that he has not had a sister soldier moment about the far right, that she has not had any courage to stand up to -- whether it's rush limbaugh or putting out a statement when that clinic was bombed. he has so many opportunities to stand up and say this is not right. but it is so clear to women and men that he lacks a spine. and that his advisors are completely clueless. and putting up ann romney is not going to work. >> yeah, exactly. it almost seems like you are questioning whether he has any core principals or not. >> the fact that politfact said

talked earlier, my 89-year-old republican mother stayed home and raised us -- you can imagine you worked all of your life and your daughter becomes a crazy liberal with a tv and radio show.
