it's not the caotes' fault. it's your fault for not shooting him. he says this publically in front of the nra. clearly, i think provocative, threatening labor. what does mitt romney do? we know mitt romney didn't dare criticize rush limbaugh when she called sandra influence. he said those are not the words i am going to use. hum. yeah. really? so what does he say about ted nugent? this is the statement that romney puts out yesterday. debbie waserman schultz had demanded that mitt romney condemn ted nugent's comments and demand an apology. this is as far as romney would go, quote: divisive language is

so you have written that romney claims -- romney claims women suffered almost all of the job losses since obama took. leslie beenets herennetts here. and why this is insidious and why it reveals the candidate's startling stupidity. >> i think actually as an opened newspaper reporter i spent many years at the "new york times," the writer writes the article and someone else writes the headlines. >> absolutely. understood. >> so it isn't a lie but it's dishonest and staggeringly dumb to say that because the fact is that when the recession started, there were massive job losses for men. they lost the first wave of jobs. a lot of them in construction and manufacturing. there were more than 5 million

jobs lost by men under president bush in the beginning of, you know, the beginning of the economic con after the trophy onward and less than half of that number lost by women, a little more than 2 million. mitt romney's claim that 92% of the job losses under obama have been by women is for structural reasons. he also started counting the day that obama assumed the presidency which is also a little bit stupid because there was a catastrophe going on. it's like a a tsunami, like him saying you are standing on the beach as of january 20th filth why didn't you stop the tsunami. it kept coming on. the reason women took the hit more as time we want on was after all of the terrible job losses which led to the

recession being called "the man-session" state and local governments began to be hit by huge budget cutbacks and many of those jobs that were lost as a result like teaching jobs were disprop positionatley held by women. it is also the case that republicans were disproportionately responsible to the decisions that led to those cutbacks and those job losses. so here is mitt romney a harvard mba. we all know you can twist statistics to show various things that are misleading. this is a prime example of that. the latest cnn poll that came out yesterday really shows if you want to talk about a war on women, his issue on women's issues is so staggering at this point. in response to the question:

who is in touch with women's issues? obama has a 28-point lead. >> wait? >> in response to the question: who is in touch with women's issues? obama got 55% and mitt romney got 27%. and what i really have to say about this is that women have voted against their own interests, against their own economic interests a lot over the years. women used to vote the way their husbands did. and, you know, women who vote republican are very often voting against their interests. but this year the things that the republicans have done in receipt recent months and the things that the republican party stands for, you could not have designed a better strategy to upset and anger the women of america than what has been going on out in this country.

whether the issue is pay equity. yesterday was, you know, pay he can canquity day. >> yeah. >> april 17th is the day to which women have to work in every new year to catch up with men because women are still earning $0.77 on the dollar. you know, romney still has not been willing to say whether he would assign the lilly ledbetter pay act which is one of the first things that obama did when he came into. and scott walker in wisconsin has just, you know, come out against that. he has signed a law repealing repealing the wisconsin equal pay law. it's well for romney to get out there and say, my wife tells me nigh mon-working by -- non-working wife tells me. >> you are going to get thrown under the bus like hilary rosen. >> i am a mom but any mother who

has raised children but whose husband is not worth $250 million, any mom whether she works outside the home for pay or not changes a lot of beds, mops a lot of floors, buys a lot of groceries, prepares a lot of meals and washes a lot of dishes. that women in that socioeconomic stratum do not. i mean, you know, i think that if mitt romney is depending upon his wife to tell him what a waitress, you know, in a diner in nevada who is a single mother trying to, you know keep a roof over her kids' heads and food on the table is thinking and needing, he should probably go out there and talk to the waitres, talk to the single mothers of america. but whether it's, you know, pay equity issues or what the republicans have done on contraception, you know, trying to mandate trans vaginal probes for women who have decided that want or need an abortion, i mean, you go across any -- the

entire range of issues that women care about and the republicans have been hostile to they will. >> all the way. >> they are trying to figure out now how to manage the appearances. but, you know, i think women are focusing on the reality. >> the latest is -- we talked about this yesterday, the republican efforts to block reauthorization of the violence against women act. >> exactly. >> these republicans all eight republicans on the senate judiciary committee voted against it. now, because it would extend protection. right? to gay lesbian and trans gender women action native american women and some people who might be here illegally. >> american women tund the bus, you know, and look at the perception that creates. basically, they are saying okay. it's okay to go back to the days when women were regarded as men's property and men can tell them what to do and men can beat them up. >> right. >> you know, and really, we

don't care. over and over again, they create the impression in the minds of electorate which, you know, as we all know, the larger half of the human population is female and women vote in disproportionately large numbers. they vote -- >> yeah. >> more than men do. >> i know. yeah. really romney has got much more than a strategic problem here. he has a problem of substance because everything that the republican party is doing really does seem to be hostile to women. >> absolutely. >> when he comes out there with this sort of path etic, the democrats are waging the real war on women because most of the jobs lost, you know in the second half of the recession finally, hit women, you know, it just seems like pathetically duplicitous and desperate. i think that women, judging by the -- last night's program on cnn, women aren't stupid. they are getting it that's up to you and me and others to tell the truth.

mcdonald's has dropped out and pushing ivoter id laws is under scrutiny. some are pleased with announcement. but color of change says they are skeptical, calling the move nothing more than a pr stunt. the "new york times" is reporting that cityi-group's shareholders have voted against the $15 million pay package for its ceo, making the very first time a big bank has shot down big compensation. fifty-five of shareholders. this happened on the same day that the occupy movement in 99 springs, la, new york and others. it is not binding but dick parsons, the retiring chairman says his board will seriously consider it. dan bonjeno a maryland republican senate candidate has been all over the news talking

neil. this is the "new york times" this morning, and i remember the abc news led with the fact that the dow dropped 200 points. oh, my god here it is are we in a double recession again? number one story, yesterday, the dow went up 194 points. on page b-less than. >> yeah. >> of "the new york times". why? >> you know, i think at the moment, there is a narrative that you can fit a falling stockmarket into jitters over where the economy is going, europe is in float after all. so when it falls, it fits something while the uptick in the economy just seems strange. it's hard to make clear sense of. yesterday evening, romney was on kudlow and he was asking various things about, you know the economy and he asked about the stockmarket and said basically

shouldn't obama be getting some credit for the uptick in the stockmarket? and his whole thing was, i wants just corporate profit driving that. all of this is happening despite whatever is happening on the political side. no credit due there. and it is, it's, you know, just to look at it a different way, it's a dis. j.unctur, kind of the two americas where the stockmarket is roaring. there are a lot of segments that aren't benefitting. >> i didn't see the kudlow interview. i haven't seen how "the wall street journal," with all due respect, played it this morning either. but it is true normally that the falls get a lot more attention than the market going up. but so it sums up here all three -- the markets, of course, only one indicator. right? but all three we know that of the main stock market market indexes are sharply higher for 2012. the do you's market, s & p, 10.6%, the nasdaq by 16.8%.

doesn't that undercut mitt romney's constant refrain that the economy is takenking and we need him to fix it? >> it does. there are a lot of things that are undercutting it at the moment and there is kind of a battle of the narratives going on now that we have kind of entered the general election phase over who can portray what we are dealing with now to the best -- their best advantage and who can portray what we have gone through over the last three and a half years to their best advantage. romney, if this continues and if we see a continued increase in employment numbers and such things, it's going to go having a fleamsier platform because this is the whole of his platform really is the state of the economy and what becomes his argument, obama, all of these things would have been stronger if it had not been for obama's policies. and the more you have to get into that territory, the weaker your argument. >> so that's what i am wondering is and you have been on the road with him and other candidates is

is. this is his entire campaign. i am a businessman i understand the economy. obama is an academic. he doesn't. you need me. if the economy isability improve, is he able to pivot into a broader message? and what is that memings?ssage? >> the two cam pages, one to protect, obama's, to protect the middle cruelly and of course there is the whole sort of fairness issue and i am going to protect the country from what he portrays as the evil or the excesses of the romney administration and for romney, it's restore. he is going to restore what the country used to be in his eyes and bring back the sort of economic liberty. so if he has a second act, it's very much in that area which he has there were had plenty in the last few months that obama is depriving us of freedom, undermining our free market system and so on.

>> in terms of tax fairness the president says income inequality is the defining issue of our time. that may be a little hyperbole. it's an important issue. a lot of americans are feeling it. >> yeah. >> when they see that like lloyd blankfein got $12 million last year les moondez got $70 million last year. working grunts have not seen any increase. so that is a big issue. in light of that republicans this week rallied except for susan collins, to block any vote on the buffett rule. now again, this is an election year. was that a smart thing politically? >> i don't know. the buffett rule, you know, polls came out this week that showed huge support. >> seventy-two %. >> which is, you know, apple pie might get a little bit better than that but it's hard to find things 72% of people support. there is a recognition that the

buffett rule may go to the fairness thing in that there are a lot of people that like it and it's not our salvation or anything like that. >> in and of itself, it's not going to get rid of the deficit or the debt. but what is? nothing is. i guess my point of view is if you have 72% of the people for it, who are the republicans representing by blocking the vote toon it? >> more than anything they wanted to prevent a full debate and figuring it was a better thing for them to do to eliminate the airing of the whole of it than letting that go forward. and suffering whatever, you know, minimal damage they would have. >> we are covering the political land scape here with neil king from "the wall street journal." your calls we always save a seat for you at the table as we remind you and you can join take that seat by giving us a call at 8 sys 6-55-press and i was going to ask you about alec

studio, particularly this monk congressman ted deutsche from the state of florida. >> broward county. >> broward and palm beach county. >> good place, good place to represent our friend of bill this hour neil king from the wall street journal. we had moved you down the couch here . your better side. congressman, you have had a big event with with senator bernie sanders at the capitol. tell us about it. >> today we have a summit on overturning citizens united. it's going to be a great event. we have senator sanders and some of his colleagues, citizen activists around the country local legislatives around the country, tall coming together to really move forward on this

movement to overturn citizens united and get corporate money out of politics. >> i think i know the answer. so all of our listeners and viewers understand why isn't important to overturn citizens united? >> anyone who has been watching the elections this season sees the role of super p.a.c.s is starting to dominate the process. the spending thus far is close to 250% greater from these outside groups than it was in the last election. >> that's only going to increase. there is this real frustration among the american people that the electoral prossays one dominated by special interests and they are starting to lose their voice. we are trying to return the democracy back to the people. >> i saw that the romney campaign said they want to raise 800 million by september which will round it off? a billion dollar campaign and obama is going to have as much? right?

this is going to be the most expensive campaign. everyone is, it seems. >> i don't think that figure includes everything because the super p.a.c.s are bigger than the traditional campaign fund. >> the super p.a.c.s are going to eclipse the camera pains? >> they have and there is no accountability on them. there are a whole host of season why it's damaging to our democracy. but the one thing people know for sure is when they watch television and they see in florida especially during the republican primary, ad after ad of these really just malicious attacks, then they see the candidates step back and say, i had nothing to do with this. these are just some outside groups that have their own interest in the campaign when we know that they are funded by corporations and there are no limits at all as a result of citizens united. that's why we have to overturn it. >> you know, last night, peter hart, our polster well-known polster did a focus group in

tampa among entirely republicans and they are a conservative bunch. it's a fascinating normal folks from ampround the tampa area. and said what's eating at you? a large number of people just viscerally said, the money coming in, distorting the process and when they got back around to it t peter actually talked directly about citizens united. basically, to a person, these people, being conservatives even wanted to get rid of citizens united which i found fascinating. do you see support coming from the right? >> sure. in all of the conversations that i have back home when we have town hall meetings there is no issue that gets people's heads nodding like amending the constitution to overturn citizens united so people feel they have a voice again. it's republicans. it's independent, tea party members. everybody thinks it's important. up here is a different story, at least at this point, and one of the things, one of the reasons that today is so important is because we are now seeing this

declaration for democracy so every candidate at every level across country will be asked to sign a pledge to support efforts to overturn citizens united and get money out of politics so we can start to hold people accountable. >> this is the anti-grover norquist pledge? >> it's not a pledge. it's a declaration. listen, the grover norquist pledge is a pledge to special interests. this is a declaration that you believe that government should be about the people and not the special interests. it's very different and i think the contrast is clear. >> in terms of the importance of it, and we talked about this almost on every issue that we are dealing with. right? the root, you get right back to campaign finance reform. you know, so often the money determines whether you are able to accomplish something legislatively ornot. that has been come bufenolideed and compounded by citizens

united and the super p.a.c.s and everything. is the answer amending the constitution? that to me is the flaw. >> it's not -- or the rub, i should say. >> obviously, it's not easy, but it's the only -- it's the only option that we have. we can wait for the supreme court to have another opportunity and it may be find some reason to revisit citizens united but it's unfortunately, it's more likely that they go the other direction. there is a challenge now to the 'til 'til tillman act which has been on the books since ted d.c. roosevelt pleaded with congress to pass a law to prevent the corporations from giving directing to candidates. >> that's now being challenged. so if we don't act now we are going to go in completely the 07 sit direction. amending the constitution is enormously difficult two-thirds of the house and senate, three-quarters of the states to ratify, but this is what we have been given. it's what the framers came up with at times in our history where action has to be taken to

preserve the nature of our country. this is one of those moments. >> that's why we are engaged in this. >> so we are not talking about a constitutional amendment to the convention. you are talking about an amendment? >> sure. >> the amendment process? >> right. there are, at our meeting today, at the summit, i will be joined by a number of my colleagues who have introduced their versions of constitutional amendments. i have mine. the occupy amendment.org explains what ours does. the members of the senate who will be there have different versions of the constitutional amendments. we are all coming together because rather than fight over specific language, we all believe it's imperative that we move forward to create this national movement to ask people to sign these declaration and also going to be announcing resolutions week throughout the country at every level of government, there are activists who are asking the city councils and school boards and county commissions to pass their own

resolutions in support of amending the constitution. these are the building blocks to what is really becoming a movement. >> when can you imagine having a gathering like this where there would be some republicans there? >> my hope is that it doesn't take that long. i think that after this next election -- hopefully before but we saw this massive increase in spending in the 2010 election, and we saw the impact that that had around the country. i think that there are a lot of people after this next election who don't at this point don't even see what's coming, and when they do, it's going to be ugly and there is going to be an awful lot of additional support that we are going to see going forward. >> you know, it's interesting that like dick lugar now. long-term, long-time senator from indiana got a challenger a tea party challenger in his primary and there are super p.a.c.s that are supporting the tea party candidate against this

incumbent republican. eric cantor gave money to a super p.a.c. in one race and it turns out that this money is being used by candidates against incumbent members of the house caucus. at some point, neil, in response to your question republicans might say, hey, wait a minute. these guys are, you know, out of control. >> there is even a super p.a.c. now that's been created to at this to add ver tis to shake the race up and at least strengthen process. it has some effect in the primaries. >> congressman, if people want to sign he it at the party, where can they sign the la in? what can people do? people around the country. >> sure. they can go to the website of

any of the groups we are going to have people from the american way and common cause and a whole host of great groups. they can go to resolutionsweek.org. resolutionsweek.org where they can learn about what they can do at a local level. they can go to the website of our amendment at the start as well, the occupy amendment.org and get a sense of what we are trialing to accomplish. there is -- this is i think, a really important moment because when the discussion turns to only the super p.a.c.s and we just accept the fact that elections are dominated by super p.a.c.s and we simply look to see which one is supporting which group can then we have almost lost the ability to control the debate and bring it back to the issues. >> that's what we are trying to do. i hope people will take advantage. >> we will have to link the sites up on our website at bill press show.com if you want to weigh in and you want to join in the conversation now about this

book called "pity the billionair," one of the two best political books i have read in my life. he is going to be in studio. number one is his first book, "what's the matter with kansas?" ten years ago. >> something like that. >> we are joined in studio by congressman ted deutschech with bernie sanders to and the constitution in order to overturn citizens united. neil king from the wall street journal in studio as a friend of bill. fred wert heimer was in studio yesterdayheimer was in studio yesterday yesterday, talking about campaign finance reform. we were talking about the super p.a.c.s as well. what is the truth about super p.a.c.s being totally disconnected, no connection at all, with the political campaign? right. so santorum foster freeze

something pack has nothing to do with the campaign. what is romney's? >> winning the future or restoring the future. something of the future. >> even though it's run by former romney aids, that has nothing to do with the romney campaign. >> even though can raise money for it. >> right. >> right. yeah. >> sure. sure. they can't coordinate. there is no one -- i don't think there is anyone who really believes that these groups operate independently. of course, they don't. >> doesn't seem that way. does it? >> there are so many ways to do it without necessarily coordinating. you can look at american crossroads and the rnc. the rnc, at the end of the week will put out a notice saying next week, we plan to advertise in these cities as obama makes this trip through the country. it's basically a smoke signal or whatever to american crossroads or whomever, hey if you want to join us in this effort. it's easy and the camera pavans do this as well to lay out your

game plan in public which is way to signal to your colleagues on the other side of the wall to complement that in some fashion. >> and sheldon alingdzdelson and newt goes to vegas and santorum wins a primary in missouri and foster frees who is a funder of his super p.a.c. is standing alongside of him on stage. >> a remarkable coincidence. >> that's against the law. right? isn't it? for them to coordinate? so why doesn't the sec step in? >> you raise a good point. there is an awful lot that the s.e.c. should be doing that they are not doing because they are deadlocked. peter welch and i and some of our colleagues sent a letter to the president urging him to make appointments to the s e.c. it's supposed to be the watchdog. that watchdog has no teeth.

and they haven't -- the s.e.c. hasn't acted on behalf of the american people in the process because they are continually bogged down in these tie votes. they need to do more. that would be an enormous step forward in trying to address some of these concerns but they just haven't. >> isn't the problem that amending the constitution that it takes so long and you can get a two-thirds vote, by the time you get two-thirds of the states, there won't be any deck omracy left anymore? the super p.a.c.s will have bought it? >> well here is -- it's not easy. there is no question. it is an enormously difficult task. however, number 1, it's the only way that we can be sure that citizens united can be overturned. it was a supreme court decision. it requires the constitutional amendment. at the same time, however, i point to the equal rights amendment which never passed never became part of the

constitution. >> right. >>. >> but whole time that the equal rights amendment has been out there as part of the discussion, as a result of that, there has been -- there have been great strides in the legislative arena, in public policy being made around the country on behalf of equal rights. i think we are going to see the same thing. if this movement can take off there will be pressure to do as much as we can short of amending the constitution which will also help. >> is it conceivable that the justices, themselves, would look at what they have wrought and decide that this is not what they had in mind and take up the case in order to somehow or another fix that or fiddle with it? >> i don't know how the justices analyze that. i do know that in citizens united, if you take a look at justice stevens' dissent, he knew what was coming. he knew exactly what was coming. and his dissent which your viewers and listeners ought to go take a look at is a play for
